I was out with out-of-town friends and one of them is married to an Indian man. Fueled by some alcohol, she was craving kati rolls, which she'd grown to love to eat with her husband on drunken nights over the years.
We were on Brick Lane when her urge kicked in and she stopped an Indian family, asking her if there were any good places around serving up Kati rolls: The Kati Roll Company!
This business, originally hailing from NYC, has long been a Soho staple, but looks like they also made it Eastwards and so shortly after we chatted with the Indian family, we were inside the tiny place and ordered Kati Rolls. My friend was adamant: You must order "unda"-style, meaning the bread has egg fried into it (that's how she explained it).
I ordered the "Shami Kabab Roll" and made it "unda": minced lamb & lentil croquette, with aromatic herbs & spices. Let me tell you: it was delicious!!!
Pro tip: The rolls are relatively small so if you're hungry, order two. read more
