I was kid free on a Thursday night and decided to join some friends for trivia night. My friends were already seated when I arrived so I grabbed a chair at their table. Trivia starts at 730 pm and I got there about 710 pm or so. The place was packed. I used to come here when it was AK O'Connors and lived in the crappy apartments next door for a short time after a divorce a few years back... I'm not sure I've ever seen this many people in the main bar area. The AC was definitely not keeping up. This could be a con, but a little sweat never killed anyone. There were three servers working and they did a fantastic job. We had a couple of bumps with our party, but these are easily overlooked. I ordered a Bud Light and then later a craft beer by Blake's. With a pound of wings (sweet heat sauce and blue cheese) my tab came to $21 and change before tip. The wings were great. Perfectly cooked and not sauced overly heavy. At $12 and change it was a good deal. The burger plate (the Thursday night special) looked really awesome too. The Keg Stand is an old school neighborhood bar and grill. I put them in the same class as Down Under. And this is what I like... If you want bougie this isn't it. The huge patio is a nice amenity when the weather cooperates. And we got second in trivia! Won a pitcher of beer for 2nd and got a $100 gift certificate for our party from a fish bowl drawing. I need to remember to hit up this spot more often. read more

Went to this bar to have a drink with my Bills fans. We were in our Bills gear and Upon arriving we were greeted with "go Chiefs" by the bartender. Quintessential Midwest dive bar. Great bartenders serving ice cold beer. The food is actually pretty decent. One major thing that could be improved upon is the smell. I'm all for dive bar atmospheres, but the scent is even a bit extreme for me. Also, both windows in the entryway are cracked, making this place look dangerous as hell. Probably should get those fixed. $1.50 pool is also not a selling point, but it seems many places are upping the cost to play billiards. Food was good however the service and draft beer was terrible!!! We waited about 20 min prior to be greeted and would of left if we didn't Uber there!! The beer was warm and not good and unfortunately it wasn't just one type but all of the draft that was tried at the table. What a great place to watch NFL or college football games. Plenty of seating, lots of TVs, and they have Sunday Ticket. I really like the beer selection, it's similar in scope to El Bait Shop, and the decor is really fun. It is a great place to go with a group, not as much for a date (it's loud). The food is very simple bar variety, but it tastes good enough. There are not many gluten free or vegetarian options, though they do have a couple salads and some pizzas. I was surprised to see a ton of games like skee ball, a full size shuffle board table, pool tables, etc. There is even a bag game on the patio. Over all, you won't have a shortage of stuff to do or new local beers to drink. If I had one complaint, they are short staffed. I was with my dad on the last place for our beer run as it got dark, we were gonna just ford it home but saw this place and decided "we are already here, we might as well check it out". Well it is a nice bar, had tons of games including this pong machine. The food was great and tasty, the staff was patient and able to serve us comepletely to what we wanted. My boyfriend and I went to the keystone specifically to try one the beers they had on tap. Simon the bartender greeted us as soon as we got there. He made sure we knew the beers my boyfriend wanted to try came in a small pour and were $15 a pour, which he had expected. I did appreciate him letting us know vefore he poured them. Appetizers were on sale- it was a Sunday afternoon. We ordered th nachos....kinda disappointing, they were a giant pile of Doritos and not a ton of toppings, happy they were on sale. Really don't know how this place stays in business. Not an especially great location right off the interstate. We were in the area, never heard of the place before, so we stopped by for lunch at 1:00 on a Friday...and were literally the only customers in the building. So the good news is that the service was prompt! We split a $9 cheese steak/fries special, which was a little salty but overall not bad, especially for the price. But the draft beer was $7 apiece, so they kind of make up for the food deal. My draft beer (Voodoo Ranger) was very flat and not that cold. Owner chatted us up and seemed like a decent guy...he wanted to know if we knew how to get rid of fruit flies/gnats (that were flying all over the place). Ughh. Maybe not the best conversation to have with your customers. Place is very dark and looks pretty beaten up. Definition of a total dive bar. This is a great place to meet for after work shin digs. The location is convenient and the place is huge- lots of outdoor seating, lots of indoor seating, fun plush red couches (those are my favorite :)), and games too. I went yesterday to celebrate a promotion. Our server was awesome! She was super nice, came around often, and gave me a great recommendation on the vanilla pumpkin beer on tap. Also, probably the best part, they have sweet potato beer! YUM! On Friday's they have $3 Fireball shots starting a 7PM. Go get ya some! Wow, I thought this would be better! We went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and I was expecting this to be a rad fun sports bar! Which it is a sports bar, with beer pong table, basketball games, pool tables, tv's, lots of beers on tap and loud music cranking! First off I just want to get this out of the way the coolest thing here is definitely the design of the bathroom, cool mustache paintings, and an actual keg urinal! The patio is also pretty nice, we choose to sit out there! There were a few other patrons out there, and there seems to be a section you can smoke outside which people were doing! Ashley got a big old Caesar salad and really enjoyed it. I on the other hand, got stuck with chips and salsa cause there is nothing on the menu that is vegan! One thing I got cranky about is it said a "Barrel of chips and salsa for 6.95, 1 dollar refills on the chips" when my tiny basket half full of chips came out I was pretty bummed. I also ordered a water and beer, but even after asking twice my water never made it to the table. Really good food at good prices. Try the Crab Rangoon Pizza (they use real crab). Monday is the Best Steak Night -- not only in Des Moines, but anywhere. $8 for an 8-oz. sirloin, baked potato and roll. Add a large salad for $2. Best Taco Tuesday, $3 for 3 tacos (beef, pork, or chicken). Wednesday Wings, 1 lb. for $6 Thursday Burger Night, $5 Friday Pork Loin sandwiches, $8 Saturday, half-price apps and $5 pitchers of Sierra Nevada Sunday, $6 pizzas The only down-side is that the music plays a little loud all the time (except during Iowa/Iowa St. games). Seriously! My husband and i went to the KEG STAND on valley west dr to eat before our vacation. We waited over an hour to get our food , that never fucken came! We eventually got up and closed the tab, said we didnt want the food anymore. The cook came out and told my husband "so i made this food for nothing" my husband replied "weve been waiting over an hr man" and he got mad and walked away. As we were arriving home i realized i forgot my purse and i rushed back to get it! In my purse i had $100 cash for our vacation still in the Veridian envelope! When i went back the bartender cassie asked for my id in my own purse and i noticed the envelope was gone!! I then asked wtf happened to my money!? They said they don't open bags and that it might of fell around the booth, KEEP IN MIND I never opened that bag after putting that envelope there because my husband paid for the food! They were playing dumb and the cook was sitting at the bar next to me while i was asking questions. I spoke to the manager Megan and she said that she can check the cameras and see what happened. I asked her if i needed to file a police report and she replied with an " if that makes you feel better go ahead." I really really dig this place. Myself and 2 lady friends arrived kinda early - 3pm! And our lady server was super nice, and picked out beers for me since I do not always like to read a menu -- she deftly fulfilled requests like, "Surprise me with your best stout-type brew", and "Can you bring me another dark beer, but with less alcohol content?" and my Gyro Salad with lamb was shockingly the best salad I have had in a LONG time. We had a great time, and the music was cranked, so if you don't like loud music, I wouldn't recommend it. Some elderly folks came in and there was a bumpin' song on the stereo saying something about a (spell-it-out) "bee eye tee see aych" and so I can't speak to how their evening went, but maybe they liked it? Decided to give this place another chance since a few friends were going for trivia. Not much was different. Slow service due to lack of help. Think we spent 15 minutes before being helped. Got my first drink and no one ever returned to ask about additional beverages. Credit card problem didn't occur this time though server said she wasn't allowed to keep tab open. I'm throughly convinced management/ownership is the issue here. I'm through with this establishment and will look to other places where service is not an issue. read more

Cool patio! They have an area for bags, tv's outside and wide range of beers. Inside, dark and dirty. Maybe because there where not a lot of people there it was more noticiable. I'd give it another try. read more

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews for this bar! Not only do they have a consistently excellent selection of craft beers, the SWEETEST servers/bartenders, but their food is fantastic! I've never had better sweet potato fries, their grilled cheese is delicious, their pizzas are also great! So are the wings! They have specials every weekday, including salmon on Tuesdays for less than ten bucks, which is an amazing deal! BEST bar in West Des Moines, move over Wellmans! This place desperately wants to be El Bait Shop but they fall short in every possible way, even going so far as creating a mascot named Al Bait to put on their T-Shirts. Beer selection is quite average considering they have 50+ taps. I've been here twice in the last couple of months and each time I am just left unimpressed with the overall beer selection. Ambiance is blah at best. Some TV's here and there but the main room is pretty boring. They have a side room with some pool tables and a shuffleboard table so at least that is something. Also this place is an ISU bar and caters toward their fans a lot. A lot of watch parties for ISU games and they also host a couple of ISU coach events. Not very friendly to Iowa fans. read more

This is my favorite bar in the Des Moines area by far. My wife and I try to come out at least once a week. There is a great draft beer selection (70+) and the taps change regularly. The vibe is much more inviting and relaxed than El Bait shop. The staff is generally very knowledgeable about the beers and are willing to make a recommendation if you're overwhelmed. And if you still can't make up your mind, they'll give you a sample. The food is a little pricey, but it's much better than your average bar fare. I've had fries, wings, nachos, and soup and it was all really good. I've been there when it was dead and when it's packed to the walls and I've never had an issue with service. When it's slow you will have to go to the bar to grab your drink, but there's runners when it's busier. There's a separate game room with Buck Hunter, basketball, pool, etc. that's generally not too busy and is a fun addition. read more

They have British Bingo on Wednesday's, DJ Trivia on Thursday's, over 80 beers on tap, and they have amazing food. My favorite is the Gyro Wrap that hits the spot after a few craft beers. Their pizzas are delicious! This place was a cyclone bar before being a cyclone bar was cool--but don't worry they include everyone in the fun. A ton of beers on tap, but no one knows what they are, or what they taste like. 7pm on Saturday durring a local college football game on tv. They had no specials running, and the building was uncomfortably cold inside. The staff are very slow and unattentive, even with 2-3 runners for the 50-60 person crowd. Our first round came back quickly, though it was only bottled beer. The second round we tried to get a pitcher. This took 15-20 mins to arrive, and whem it did we were told there werent any glasses and we'd have to wait for them to finish washing. The glasses came five mins later and were warm to the touch. The keg beer was stale and warmer than youd want as well for the $7 you have to spend for it. The french fries we had were good but simple. The nachos were just a dry cold plate of chips stacked with bagged lettuce, slimy tomatos, and greasy meat. This night runs in par with the last few stops here as well. I have been here twice and both times the service was just God awful...or rather, non-existent. The second try, we ended up waiting...and waiting...and then just leaving. A place this size and this busy (somehow?) really needs servers. It would have been one thing if I saw a server and they were just super busy or had to take care of something or you know, whatever the case might have been. But there was NO ONE! We live rather close to this establishment, and while it is not personally my taste for atmosphere (and is REALLY smokey), I would have come here when the BF wanted to. I was looking for a place to watch an Iowa State BB game. They do get a good Cyclone following. Good crowd and the bar service was good. I moved to an open table because my girlfriend was going to join me. The table service was terrible. It was an afternoon game and was planning on only having a couple beers during the game. I can honestly say that we never had anybody wait on us. There was a table of 4 guys right next to us that the server would take care of. Once she delivered their beers, picked up my empty glass and turned around and left. Didn't even ask us if we needed anything! This of course was in the winter and the smokers go out on the patio and smoke. I think it's enclosed but not heated. We were about 25' from the patio door and I was having flashbacks to the days that they allowed smoking in bars, yuck. I'm still looking for a good Cyclone bar in the DSM area. read more
