a hand holding a cup of coffee

What an experience.. this is not your typical coffee shop. Coffee beans are roasted fresh, and the owner greets you as soon as you enter the front door. There are tattered couches to sit on, tapestries hanging from the walls, and the smell of coffee is poignant throughout the room. If you want a REAL cup of coffee, an education, and a warm invitation for just $2.50 cash, stop in! Thank you!

The Kind Coffee Company is, in my opinion, a "must experience for yourself" kind of place on the west side. It is in what seems to be a converted industrial building. Sacks of coffee line one wall as they roast on premises, and college-grade couches form a comfortable, laid back seating area for people to hang out. The prices are great, much cheaper than Starbucks and the coffee is at least as good. I jokingly refer to this place as where I go to get a "ghetto-cino" because of where it is, but the staff is great and all kinds of people can be found here, including some from the 'hood! It's a great neighborhood place though, everybody there has always been friendly & I would highly recommend checking it out!

The best coffee in town. This is a no frills shop devoted to coffee bean roasting, and sales of cup of coffee.

They also sell some very cute greeting cards, earrings, magnets, etc. We ordered two drinks (Ube Espresso, Crème Brûlée latte), a flower pot mini cake (chocolate cake with raspberry filling in a decorative flower pot), a crème brûlée donut, and a spinach puff. The desserts were good, with the flower pot mini cake being our favorite. The chocolate cake was moist and the raspberry filling was balanced. We didn't love the flower frosting on top, but it was very pretty. The donut was very unique and filled to the brim with a fluffy cream - though we both thought it could've had a bit more flavor. The dough was perfect - soft and pillowy. The crème brûlée top made for a fun eating experience as the thin hard sugar had a satisfying crunch. The spinach puff was also delicious. Flaky pastry and cheesy filling - very comforting. The stars of the show were the drinks. The coffee was superb - balanced, smooth, and rich in flavor. While I didn't find the ube flavor to stand out, the ube espresso drink was still one of my favorite coffee drinks I've had. The Crème Brûlée latte was my friend's favorite - it was the perfect dessert drink. It even had the sugar crust on top. I would definitely come back to try more of their menu!

I was pleasantly surprised by the decor, everything looks so adorable and clean and they also have a little merch area! There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with a moderate but fast moving line that started at the door. We ordered a regular oat milk latte, an iced matcha latte and also grabbed one of their $1 "day old cookies" they had out. My husband said the oat milk latte had a great espresso to milk ratio and the "day old" banana split cookie did not taste stale at all and was delicious. My matcha was a bit on the lighter/mild side for the matcha taste and I'd probably get something different next time as their specialty drinks looked really tasty. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. The vibe was relaxed and low-key, making it a good place to sit down and get some work done. I spent some time working while I was there and appreciated having a space where I could focus without feeling rushed. The staff was pleasant, and one of the employees was kind enough to take a picture for me when I asked, which I appreciated. The only thing that stood out to me was that there wasn't much of a greeting or acknowledgment when I walked in, but it wasn't a huge issue. The seating was okay. The chair I chose wasn't the most comfortable for an extended stay, but it got the job done. There was also some rock music playing during my visit, which helped create a casual atmosphere. I didn't order any coffee or food this time around, so I can't speak to the menu yet. This visit was more about finding a place to work and unwind for a bit. Would I come back? Yes. While I'm still searching for my go-to coffee lounge in Syracuse, Recess is definitely a spot I'd visit again. It has a chill, unpretentious vibe that makes it easy to settle in and spend some time there. I forgot to take more pictures will do when I go back.

Started walking in this general direction and the wonderful aroma of coffee varieties drew me in!…read moreSome of the coffees are actually named after some of the actual Finger Lakes, so that's cool. Went up to the counter and asked the young man a couple of (what I thought were) easy questions and he seemed like he could care less what I was saying and didn't want to be there. He gave a vague answer that didn't really quite answer my question. My daughter ordered a coffee and asked for beans to be ground while I was thinking about what I wanted to order. He prepared hers and I asked for my order. In the meantime my daughter noticed that he had filled it and had not included the oat milk she had asked for and she asked again for that. He put it on the counter for her to add, but there was no room to really add it. She put in a little and then I added a little to mine as well. He had handed her the bag of beans while cashing us out and she noticed that they were not ground...as she had asked him to do prior...so she had to ask again. In the meantime she had to dribble some of her coffee into a garbage dispenser so she could put the lid back on and drink from the cup. So, overall, the coffee smelled and tasted great, but the service was poor. The guy was not trying to be friendly or helpful at all. I get he probably didn't really want to be working, but he was. Sometimes you need to just accept it, drink a cup of your own coffee, wake up, and at least try to be "present" and accommodating. Luckily we are very easy-going people and just rolled with it without complaint. Until now I guess. I absolutely hate to put negative things in a review, but that was our real experience. Will I go again? Sure. I always give second and usually third chances. People have off days. My challenge to this young man is that next time someone shows up, actually say, "How can I help you?" and actually mean it and then be helpful. This is all we ask. The smell and taste of the product will sell itself and bring people in. I'd love to update this review in the future with glowing comments!
