Our first here. Us and 2 other customers here at 8 oclock next door to hotel. Hmmm. Special request, surprise, of burned pancake and hash browns/onions, and 2 eggs medium. Orange juice drink, coffee. Nice lady attending brought a large pot of coffee. Unusual and very good. Really nice work from kitchen staff here. Pancake is nice dark, hash browns pretty much same but what really helped here is fresh chopped red onions on the tators. 5 Stars for that and my dark pancake.

Located just off I-80 in York,Nebraska, The Kitchen offers easy access and large parking area. We were pleasantly greeted and immediately seated. The restaurant offers accommodations for larger groups. The restaurant is clean and the menu offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options all day long at very reasonable prices. We decided to go for the fried chicken understanding that because it's me to order there's about a 25 minute wait. During that time we enjoyed a crisp house salad and hearty homemade beef soup. Our server was exceptionally attentive and pleasant. Highly recommend The Kitchen if you happen to be in the area for a great diner experience

It took 33 minutes to get this water. My burger was cremated, my girlfriend's hashbrowns were raw. Terrible service, inedible "food," save your time and money.

My husband and I stopped in York and decided to try the Kitchen. The menu looked decent so we went in and were seated. It seemed like this was a family-run restaurant which are normally really good so we each ordered a skillet. When the food came out we were less than impressed. First, the hash browns looked completely burnt, but we thought hey they might still taste good. It did not. Somehow the hash browns were both soggy & overly crispy and not only tasted burned but were also incredibly oily. The ham was chewy and the bacon was burnt. We were disappointed. The waitress was very sweet and nice though, and our food did come out quickly and correctly.

Excellent breakfast specials that include free coffee of you are nice. Pancakes the size of your head and don't be shy with the syrup.

Glad we chose here instead of Applebee's. Burger, chicken strips, and catfish were good.

The food itself was delicious, I ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of hashbrowns. I haven't been able to stop thinking about the salty sausage gravy pairing with the hash browns. We happened to be in the Lincoln area for an event, and he begged to visit the Hi-Way Diner again to relive those memories he cherishes. It was pretty early in the morning, so a breakfast stop did sound pretty appealing to me. We popped in and the interior is pretty cute, with vintage signs and items scattered throughout. The look of the building is a little worse for wear, I will say, with musty carpets, fluorescent lighting, and a faded smell of a building that has been standing a while (which this has) along with the delicious smells of the food cooking. Ignoring the smells and sights, we stood in line to get a table. It was a Sunday when we were there, so very busy obviously. We were seated at a booth, and perused the menu. Let me tell you right now now, you do NOT come here for health food. It's either very heavy meaty options, or sweet pancakes and waffles. Because of the aforementioned heaviness of the fare, my husband and I decided to split two entrees and share the sides. I chose the South Street Meatloaf, and it tasted just like my mom used to make, with a ketchupy brown sugar glaze. My better half chose the Chicken Fried Chicken, and it was ENORMOUS. For our sides, we had mashed potatoes and corn, and those were pretty standard - nothing to write home about. We packed most of our entrees and sides away to take home, because my husband said we had to try the pancakes too! He got the standard pancakes and doused them in butter and blueberry syrup. Can't go wrong there. I got the Magic Toast and chose the French Toast flavor. It was very well battered and came with some delicious syrup to top it with. Highly recommend trying anything from the Magic Toast menu. Hi-Way Diner is definitely a hole in the wall style eatery, but it's worth a stop in Lincoln if you're looking for a tasty breakfast at a pretty affordable price!
