We came in town from Cincinnati OH, and decided to visit The Landing. We sat down to find a nicely appointed table and nicely lit room. I ordered the Asian Stir Fry, this dish is listed at $14 and with added chicken the total was $18. When I received my food the portion was skimpy at best. I finished in under 4 minutes. Another member of my party order the Pork-loin, when we received this dish we came to find that the pork was fatty and tough. After speaking to a manager, they did reduce our bill. Honestly can't rate my last experience at The Landing low enough. Our waitress was the only redeeming quality. The food took forever, and she had to keep apologizing. Then, when my (medium rare) steak arrived, it was brown all the way through. I mentioned it to the waitress, and she sent it back to the kitchen. In the meantime, she brought me some French Onion Soup so that I had something to eat while my husband and son ate. My husband's lobster tail was deep fried? My 5-year-old son got the burger, and he normally devours burger. He said it was "yucky" and wouldn't take more than two bites. After waiting another 20 minutes with a now restless 5-year-old, I still had no steak and they were both finished eating. So, we asked to skip the steak and just get the bill. The owner was wretched about the whole thing, and made a very embarrassing scene of asking us what was wrong with our experience. That's the nicest way I can put it. Then, I got food poisoning overnight. It is safe to say I will never go back. It's a shame, too, because the view is fantastic. read more

Zero Service and Average Food We asked to sit outside, which would have required putting a couple of tables together, for our party of 5 adults and 2 dids, but that was impossible. They did sit us at the window, directly near speakers for the HORRIBLE and LOUD music?!?! We discretely requested the music be lowered so we did not have to shout to communicate, which resulted in the manager/owner?? lecturing us for at least 5 minutes that we were in a BISTROPUB, and the PEOPLE (does not include us, apparently) like the muzak, and that is why they come there, but he could seat us in the bar??, where it was quieter (outside there is just the sound of boats, water, people). We demurred, and stayed. Most customers were families with kids and babies,so I doubt this was a crowd dying for the horrible and loud music. In any case, we will never return. Just had "brunch" at The Landing. What a joke! They overcharged for everything and the food was deplorable. The menu stated that everything was fresh made - nope - LIE! I got the breakfast "scramble" - nothing scrambled here. It was a pre-made egg omelette. And it was obvious. My bf ordered an omelette. It was the same pre-made egg crap with some peppers and onions stuck inside. He had tried to order fried eggs and was told no, we can't do fried eggs! Really?! Yet menu stated "farm fresh eggs" and they had eggs Benedict. We also asked if they had pancakes. Our waiter told us no - but another server chimed in and told us that they had silver dollar pancakes on the kids menu. They also had chicken and Belgian waffles. We wanted just the waffles, not only did they taste and look frozen but they charged us $8 and served them with not maple syrup but honey! The bloody Mary's (which when I called to ask I was informed that they had a whole Bloody Mary menu - also never saw that) were also pre-made and horrible. WAY too much horseradish. And they charged us an additional $2 per drink for Tito's! The food was cold, rubbery and really just gross. In the end we spent close to $100 for a brunch that wasn't worth $30. We would have been way better off at 5 Corners or Ledger for that price. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! read more

My experience was more like a two-parter, one a 4 star experience and the other a 2 star experience. When we first arrived, we sat in the restaurant and enjoyed the nice view. Our server was so friendly and the pierogies were amazing. We then transitioned to the pub, where the service was far less attentive. I really hate writing a negative review, BUT....when it's deserved, I suppose it's best just to be honest so that others aren't disappointed. Ordered char-broiled swordfish well done. Got a salmon dinner. It went back. Waited minimally 3/4 of an hour, and finally, a swordfish dinner came out....no grill marks, appeared to be microwaved, raw in the center. RAW...not rare. Sent it back. Got a lobster roll....no seasoning....bland with lots of lettuce. Dessert seemed to be reheated from frozen. When I received a note about not using my loyally card, I wrote back the above to the owner. Did you hear from him? Neither did I. If I owned a restaurant, I'd rush to correct the slight....damage control, if nothing else. So I guess the loyalty card should be fed to the shredder. read more

The best thing about this restaurant is the view. The somewhat small deck has amazing views of the harbor that are tough to beat. However, the food is mediocre at best. Fried clams were just ok and served with lukewarm, stale tasting fries. The lobster mac n' cheese was soupy and in need of a makeover. Lastly, our server didn't seem very knowledgeable about the menu and was put off when we asked her to check the ingredients on a dish. So, in an effort to demonstrate our optimism, We headed to the pub where we also struggled To get served despite table service. My husband headed to the bar and bought us drinks. After one drink, and after the 5pm hour, my husband checked in on our wait list status (it's important to note that we were put on the wait list as the sole members because we were told that being retrieved from the bar could not be counted on and we should actually attempt to make our way back to Check), of course when he did, he was met with bewilderment and needed to remind the hostess of who he was and what he was looking for (this was 20 minutes later). He was redirected to the pub to wait. We then relinquished our patio wishes and began the ordeal of ordering from the pub and establishing a relationship with table service (which prior to this was not successful). When we did get her attention, she was quite nice- a welcome departure from our hostesses. One thing I will say was that the homemade potato chips were pretty good... After an hour at the bar, the unthinkable happened (truly we had given up based on the hostess service)- we were called from The bar to a table, but at that point- we cut our losses and left shortly thereafter to go out for dinner... read more

Had my birthday dinner here. Calamari was awful...fishy and under-fried. Mussels were awful and not fresh. Steak tips on Caesar was like spicy over cooked leather on lettuce even though they were ordered medium. My surprise birthday dessert, an old stale biscuit sliced in half and squirted with whipped cream and a few slices of strawberries in flavored corn syrup. Water glasses were never filled. Tons of bus boys working but standing in a corner chatting so you had to flag them down for every little thing. Terrible birthday dinner. I usually visit here each time I'm in Mass (assuming they have lobster). The service is fine and I like the food.

So, some restaurants just give you awesome food and ok service. My server understood that a restaurant isn't just selling food, but a full experience. I received regular, but not overbearing attention and got the sense that they knew the menu well. As for the food, I had the baked haddock, and truthfully, I haven't had fish that well cooked in a while. It was the type of meal that makes you want to take small bites and take the time to taste all the flavors. I'd come back here in a heartbeat. read more

I live in Marblehead, so The Landing is a place I go often: in the summer, it offers the best outdoor-on-the-water views and atmosphere of Marblehead Harbor. Year round, they have some interesting bands, although it is often "the same old, same old'. I've just learned that a great new band I enjoyed last month is not returning due to concern about noise, which is a shame. The menu has some stars and some dishes miss the mark for the price. I concur with the need for freshening up the interior, particularly the comment about the soiled, stinky carpet! As a local, I'd be much more inclined to stay local in Marblehead if they changed up the bands now and again, and perked up the interior so that in the cooler months, it'd be fun to be a regular too! Update: As of Spring 2012, they've changed out the stinky carpet in the bar. Music choices still need a little updating, but the menu has improved, and the service is always great! read more

I'm a Marbleheader for over 3 decades and have been frequenting the Landing most of my adult life. It's always been a wonderful experience and a great way to enjoy old town! Additionally, I've never complained at a restaurant and am generally overly friendly to all waitstaff. Unfortunately my experience there last night was rather overwhelming. It was 4th of July and we went into the restaurant around 7pm knowing that it would be busy and we would need to be extra patient on the holiday. Our waitress came to us promptly and took our drink order. Half an hour passed before our drinks came and we began the long wait to place our order. Our waitress did not come come back w/bread or to check on us until 7:45. In the meantime, the tables around us (several of whom were seated after us) were each helped 4 or 5 times. I spoke to our waitress but she still did not come back to our table to take our order. With our drinks empty for over half an hour, and with no service, I decided to bring this to the attention of the manager on duty, Steve. I explained that our waitress was making appearances to the tables around us and completely ignoring my pregnant wife, sister, and me. I explained to Steve that we had been sitting there for 45 minutes and were wondering why we hadn't been helped. He brushed me off and said that it was a busy night and that the waitress is trying as hard as possible (ignoring the fact that she had been helping tables all around us), and that he would make sure to check in on us and bring our bread and drinks in the meantime. He never checked in with us again. Keep in mind our entrees ranged in price between 27 and 32 dollars a piece, so this is not just a casual night out. We finally ordered our entrees and a re-fill on our drinks around 8:20, an hour and 20 minutes after we entered the restaurant. Within that time, tables around us came in, placed their orders, paid their bills, and went out to enjoy the beauty of old town Marblehead. Our food was finally brought out to us at 8:50 by someone from the kitchen but unfortunately they forgot a portion of it. I brought this to their attention immediately but they never came back with the missing portion of our order. My sister's steak was not properly cooked, our side dishes were cold, we didn't have our complete meals, and neither our waitress or Steve, the manager on duty, came to check on us. I spoke with another waiter, who also ignored our request for help. When our bill finally came I asked to speak with the manager again and calmly expressed our dissatisfaction with the experience. Steve would not accept responsibility for the problem and generally brushed us off as being difficult. He did not believe that the tables around us had come and gone before we had the opportunity to place our order. The Landing did pick up the cost for most of the meal, which I appreciate, but the experience left us all bewildered. I would suggest that the owners of the Landing review their management training and would encourage Steve to take customers concerns seriously. Perhaps checking in on us once during the two hours after my initial concerns were raised would have been enough. read more

After spending a bit of time and effort to find a place to park, we headed in for a late dinner. (Alas, it was so dark by the time arrived that there was no ocean view to enjoy.) We were seated within three minutes and were attended to by Rory. Drinks appeared relatively quickly and the clam chowder soon followed though the bread lagged behind. Chowder was rich and creamy with a good number of clams. Bread was hot out the oven, crispy in the outside and soft on the inside--worth the wait. I then had thr sole français which smelled and tasted a bit too fishy; the egg coating was also a bit heavy so that as the dish cooled it became mushy. The accompalnying asparagus was moderately overcooked but the pilaf was fine. My sweetheart ordered ths grilled salmon, which appeared to be the better choice--cooked well and not fishy. The mashed potatoes and mixed veggies were reported to be "okay." Given the final bill, I am not sure if dinner is a good value: a bit too much for an unremarkable meal. Overall our dining experience was reasonable enough that we'd give the place another try, most probably for lunch when the fare is more basic, the prices are more reasonable, and the few can better appreciated. read more

Just returned from a fabulous evening meal at The Landing. The view is wonderful and the seafood tastes so fresh. Prices were good. Service was great. We started with 2 shrimp cocktails and a clam dish - both of which were amazing. The shrimps were the biggest and freshest that I've ever tasted. All 4 of us had steamed lobster for main which was just devine and really great value at only £27 per dish. Our server Sydney was great- very friendly, knowledgeable and her passion of the area really shone through. Very enjoyable and would throughly recommend. read more

2.5 stars, actually. This place is right on the water, and even though I went in March, the view was still beautiful. This place is super-casual, and looked like locals frequented it. I had the lobster roll, which was good, had some nice chunks of lobster in it- wasn't all a shredded mess. Although I think the Black Dog in the Vineyard has the best lobster roll I've ever tasted (although I'm not a New Englander, so I'm no expert!). I digress. Anyway, my hubby had the fried Ipswich clams, which he said were ok. All fried things kind of taste alike. The kicker- he came down with violent food poisoning a few hours later! That was all we had eaten that day, so we know the Landing was the culprit. And hello, clams are notorious for food poisoning. I called the restaurant later to report it, and the manager was very nice and stated that it was probably the clams because in their off-season, some of their items don't "move as quickly and may have been sitting around." I know mistakes happen, and the manager was very nice, but hello, if you're a seafood restaurant you should be serving the freshest items possible, off-season or not! And you should be extra-vigilant serving seafood. Now, like I said, accidents happen and I don't want to vilify the Landing- this could have happened anywhere. But everything was just average-that, coupled with my husband's experience, mean I probably wouldn't frequent this place again. read more

The restaurant was fairly busy but they seemed to have plenty of staff about 4 waiters and 3 bussers so I'm not sure what the problem was. Very nice location but sadly, the food was ok. Flies were buzzing our table the entire time as we were eating. Another customer also commented on her experience with the fly issue. As we were leaving, I mentioned to the manager about fly issue. He brushed it off as saying it's because the exterior door leading to outside is constantly being open and closed. I mentioned to him he needs to install FLY LIGHTS. He stated that they were being installed this week. I would expect that an upscale restaurant or any other would have their premises free of nuisance and unsanitary insects. read more

The service at The Landing is by far the best family friendly experience we have had anywhere. The food is consistently good (lobster roll is amazing, bar food is exactly what you want). What makes this our "go to" for Saturday or Sunday early lunch is because the staff is so welcoming and accommodating. The best chowder I've ever had. Also, the fried calamari over spinach salad was quite delicious. And the waiter was personable and at times very funny, without being over-the-top. I didn't catch his name, but we really enjoyed his service. Things didn't start so great, however, as it took a while for anyone to take our order. Eventually, the aforementioned waiter appeared and said that our server was temporarily unavailable but that he would be taking care of us instead. (For all I know, he was the owner or manager.) Anyway, he saved the day. As did the food. read more
