Was traveling back from Maine to catch a flight out of Boston. Drove through Salem looking for one last delectable meal by the waterfront when we came across Finz Seafood & Grill. The reviews looked good so we traipsed through the rain to get there. I ordered a seafood-stuffed haddock that was beautifully presented and amazingly freshly prepared to eat. I loved every bite and now that I'm back in Colorado, I'm craving another serving please! The staff was attentive and conscientious - bringing us extras like more tarter sauce and drinks without a second prompt from us. The ambiance was a large open space, very clean (bathroooms, too), with soft music playing in the background. It was easy to have conversations in here and be heard - no loud, obnoxious tables, no party atmosphere on this Monday evening. And, the pricing was on par with the other seafood we had eaten all week up and down the coast. We will definitely go back next time we are in Salem! read more

Nice restaurant by the water serving seafood and sushi. No sushi this visit, just drinks and lobster. Stuffed lobster for my husband and lobster roll for me. Both were tasty and the lobster roll was generous. There is a nice deck overlooking the water serving seafood it it was too hot for us to eat outside today. Inside the dining room is nice and airy. Wow, do they do a good painkiller! I asked what drink I should order, and the waitress recommended this, and I'm very glad she did. The food did take a long time to come out, but with the drinks we were happy to wait sitting out back is fantastic, with a wonderful view of the water, and boats. When the food did arrive, we had the seaweed salad with a fun little sparkly thing in the top that I hadn't never seen in food before, and we also ordered sushi. There was something else too, but I forget. The sushi was nothing special, and I liked the presentation of it, but I felt like the mix of flavors for the vegetarian sushi option were slightly lacking. My friend from home suggested this place. She even said it was so good that she went twice so naturally, I had to go.. at least once. I booked reservations which was simple enough. My friends and I actually showed up 20 minutes early and were seated right away. We were given the option of indoor or outdoor seating. Given that it was 60s in October, we sat outside and were entertained by the respectful but drunk boaters nearby. It was too dark to enjoy the water view but one can imagine. We all agreed how hard it was to pick a dish because everything sounded so appetizing. In the end, we did split some desserts. Lobster maki 10 piece 11/10: I typically don't finish my food because I have a small appetite. But this roll was so good that I truly almost finished the whole thing. I had to let my friends try a piece. Immediately, they both gave me a positive reaction. The tempura was crunchy. I really enjoyed the lobster bits. 2 piece salmon nigiri 8/10: Salmon was fresh, silky, and smooth. Easy to bite down on. Rice was cooked thoroughly. No complaints. Pumpkin pie tiramisu 7/10: This tiramisu lacked structure, however the flavors were complex. The maple glazed pecans SOLD ME. Great texture contrast. Warm chocolate chip cookie pie 9/10: The soft, cold vanilla ice cream and warm cookie pie paired so well together. The chocolate never made me feel dehydrated. It never felt heavy. Highly recommend this dessert! Overall, I wish I had more time to come back to this restaurant to try more dishes just like my friend back at home! There was no wait for our table (even though we were a bit early). But the waits for service and bar were unusually long. We weren't too distraught as we were celebrating a birthday and were in no rush. But either they were understaffed or under-trained. The follow up was limited and a couple of our requests were forgotten. There was limited check-in as to how we were doing. It would have been nice if a manager would recognize that there was a need for attention. We may have even added a dessert but we were tired of waiting. read more

We had an opportunity to go out for a nice dinner, and although it was cold outside, we love a view of the water. The location hit the mark 100%. Although this may primarily be seen as a seafood restaurant, it has some great options for all food lovers. We started with the goat cheese appetizer, and although I found it pricey for the portion, it was delicious. I loved seeing a kids' menu with more options than just pasta, grilled cheese, cheeseburger, and hotdog. They offered popcorn shrimp, and the sides had good options too, like tater tots! My son, who is 5, rarely cleans his plate completely, but this night he did. He loved the shrimp and tots, which was a big win for us. My husband and I both had the filet, and it was cooked perfectly. My husband wouldn't stop raving about it. He's allergic to seafood, so having non-seafood options was a big hit for him. I love seafood, but felt like a steak. Overall, this was a great night with awesome ambiance and the water views we wanted. I called at 11:30 that day for our 6:45 reservations to request a seat inside with a view as we were going there for a bachelorette, the host shauna was nice and said she would make note of that in the reservation. Upon arrival I reiterated this again and they eventually found a place inside for us to sit. We were greeted with plastic water drinking cups while other around us were given glassware. We ordered some a mocktail and a some cocktails and placed an appetizer order of calamari (GF) and the spinach artichoke salmon dip. The dip came out cold which we ended up sending back as it was just not appetizing especially cold. The calamari were fine. It took our server quite some time to come back around to us to eventually order our entrees. I even purposefully shot her a smile or two and she would just smile back instead of coming over. We ordered our entrees eventually. The crab nachos came out cold and had an almost body odor smell which made them very unappetizing. The wedge salad was the best meal out of all of them, tasty and well balanced. The crab cake sandwich was alright. The crab stuffed haddock was delicious but definitely needed a few more veggies. The sushi rolls were delightful. the spicy sauce was overpowering and could be toned down a bit to not take away from the flavor of the food. The service overall just was not good. The celebration was never even acknowledged (no congratulations or anything). the bill was $300 and for that the food just was not worth it at all or the experience there. I'm definitely disappointed and will not be returning. I also want to add that I made this reservation through OpenTable and I have VIP status on there which would sway me to make the experience a little bit better, this was not the case. read more

Incredible. My husband planned two birthday dinners for me as we like to make a weekend out of my Halloween birthday. We went to Finz the night before my actual birthday. We had a reservation and were seated on time at the window as requested. It was dark, but we still had a lovely view. The restaurant wasn't as busy as we expected given the time of year, so it was calm enough to have a conversation and for service to be *impeccable*. We started with some mocktails and appetizers off the fall menu then shared the pumpkin swordfish. We thought it was a play on the season, but turns out its a real fish! It was perfectly cooked and the plate was loaded with vegetables. After our plates were cleared, a large dessert of warm chocolate chip cookies, ice cream and whipped cream arrived. Everything was spot on! Got the Surf n Turf and was pleasantly surprised by the smell from the smoked bacon wrapped crab stuffed shrimp. I visited New England this summer. One requirement was I needed a lobster roll. On the last night of the trip we stopped in at finz. We were seated outside quickly, and the view was wonderful. It was a nice setting to finish the trip. They do not serve Coke or Pepsi products, so I skipped a soda. The rolls were nice and hot. I would suggest ordering there. I almost wish we had more. My lobster roll was so good. Plenty of big chunks served with butter. I wish I would have requested a side of butter to dunk some of it in. The homemade chips were also delish. Decent waterfront restaurant in the Derby Wharf area of Salem. Finz offers indoor and patio seating is a short walk from the downtown area. We enjoyed the fresh cool air of the patio seating, view from the patio, and the maritime theme of the restaurant! Prices were higher than some other places in Salem. Service was great! Our server, Jennifer P, took excellent care of us! For food, we tried the clam chowder ($18)- rich and hearty flavor, served hot. Would rate 4/5: Recommend! There was some cheese looking residue stuck on the outside of the bowl, but it happens. Just caution the restaurant to make sure serve water is clean. We also tried the lobster roll ($38). 3.5/5. I order the chilled mayo lobster roll. The roll came with a good quantity of lobster meat but it was impossible to eat as a sandwich based on the small size of the bread. Some people may love it that way but it wasn't my preference. The roll was good but not great. The sauce lacked any wow factor to bring it all together and some pieces of shell/inedible parts were still on the meat. The coleslaw and chips with the roll were great! Lastly, we tried the Baja tacos with local fish, which was haddock ($19) 2/5. This dish was the most disappointing as the tacos were dry and largely flavorless. The fried fish was nice and crunchy but tortilla and accompanied ingredients and crème fraiche didn't complement each other. Maybe substituting chopped cabbage in place of the shredded lettuce and using a spicer or more flavorful sauce would help. read more

FINZ -- A Mixed Bag This Time I've been to FINZ many times and it's usually a reliable go-to, but tonight was a mixed experience. The good: The sushi was excellent--fresh, beautifully presented, and genuinely delicious. I had the hand roll with tuna, avocado, cucumber, tobiko, and kizami wasabi, along with a spicy tuna roll topped with a creamy, flavorful sauce. Everything on the plate looked as good as it tasted. The not-so-good: The service was the worst I've ever had here. We originally asked to sit outside, but it was windy, so we requested a different table. The waiter seemed irritated, even though the new table was closer to his station. He didn't offer any helpful suggestions (like moving closer to the wall for wind protection), just shifted us one table over with clear annoyance. Drink and food orders came out fine, but the waiter was disengaged. When he asked if we needed anything else, he was already walking away. We had to call out to request water, which he brought--and then disappeared. No one checked in, no offer of dessert, no clearing of plates, no check. After waiting 10 minutes, we finally went to the hostess stand to pay. To make things worse, the hostess didn't know how to process a credit card, and the manager didn't know how to use Apple Pay. I had to dig out my card and hope it worked. FINZ may be a Salem staple, but tonight the service missed the mark badly. read more

What a great place to warm up on a chilly fall day! Nestled right along the water, the views are amazing. I imagine it's lovely during the warmer months when you can sit on the dock for a bite and sip. The food was delicious. My daughter said her lobster roll was the best she ever had. We started off with their bread roll appetizers for $2- a really great addition to the table. Well worth the price. For drinks ordered cokes with lemon, standard. For the main courses we went for the BBLT and Angus burger-- both great options for seafood alternatives. The BBLT on naan was excellent, chock full of bacon.
