First, I want to say I will return to try their Sunday brunch or in cooler weather for their raclette and fondue. I was walking around Greenwich Village and was intrigued by the Swiss flag, as I previously spent a summer in Switzerland and have visited that beautiful country a number of times. But the restaurant and bar were completely empty. Others nearby were buzzing. Their sidewalk patio had folks at two tables. And me inside. I ordered a nice Swiss wine and had a nice conversation with the woman bartender. They have a busy brunch on Sundays and they are doing World Cup watch parties for Switzerland, France, and Belgium teams. We decided to stop by the Lavaux on Saturday night this past weekend. We had just seen a play that made me need a glass or two of wine, and the Lavaux was near our hotel. It was the perfect spot. We sat at the bar, just across from the gondola (which you can reserve on Resy if cute gondolas are your thing). I have to say, I found the secret message party to be disappointing, but the food, ambiance and service were terrific! We got a classic cheese fondue, the server recommended the cheese blend. We each got wine, our server was so great. She let us try a couple different wines before we settled on what we each wanted. The fondue is absolutely delicious, to balance out the richness of the fondue. We also got a kale salad that was also very tasty. We didn't even have room for dessert, unfortunately. The secret message party was disappointing, because all other tables answered our questions, it just wasn't the level of interesting exchange that we were seeking. And most people in the restaurant didn't really seem into passing the messages. Perfect place to go on a cold night! I was very happy to learn they carry Swiss wines, which is not easy to find in the States. I tried the Saint-Saphorin chasselas (2023) and it was exquisite. Saint-Saphorin is one of my favorite villages in the Lavaux vineyards (near where I used to live), so it was really cool to be "taken" back there for a moment :) Jared did an amazing job taking care of us. We were able to reserve the gondola, then moved to the main dining room for dessert (since we wanted to get dessert but our time slot for the gondola was up). The food was good. Our Raclette tasted authentic, though it hardened over time, since the plate was not heated. The accoutrements and charcuterie also tasted authentic (even more so if they had included some pickled cocktail onions). I love how our server pronounced "Rösti" correctly. The bratwursts that came with it were good, though the rösti itself tasted to me more like a Jewish potato pancake than a Swiss rösti. The chocolate mousse and crème brûlée were good. Not too sweet (which is how I like them) and a good size after such a rich meal. Great times! I would definitely come back. read more

The reason why I gave this place one star is because of the staff, namely a bartender named Julie. Where do I begin? First and foremost, Julie is completely lost. She didn't know how to make a single drink from the happy hour menu, claiming that she is new and has no idea. Second, she was asking my friend, and I if we were on a date and insisted on showing us pictures of a guy, she was going to meet later in the day. It was so fun to build different flavor combinations with the different cheeses/meats. Also it comes with some mini cornichons, flaky sea salt, jams, and other flavor enhancers. - Chalet's Pasta (8.6/10): This pasta was soo good! The fusilli pasta picked up the flavorful and creamy sauce so well. Honestly, I thought the dish would be bland but it really surprised me with the amount of flavor it had. Def recommend this dish - Jolicoeur Blanc Chassela: Obviously we had to order Swiss wines at a wine bar! The Lavaux imports directly from Swiss winemakers which is so cool. A restaurant that claims to specialize in fondue should know it's traditionally served with cubed bread, not slices. When I asked for cubes, the waiter initially refused, which was ridiculous and unnecessary. The fondue itself was also too heavy and lacked the proper consistency--it should be smoother and lighter. The fondue was good, would've loved to have more options for sides like maybe protein of some sort. The tomato and truffle are winners by far. Should you have a craving for fondue in NYC, one's options are surprisingly limited. Thankfully The Lavaux offers a perfectly executed option in a surprisingly (perhaps shockingly) uncrowned space in the West Village. On a most recent visit we shared the porcini-infused fondue, which added a nice dimension to the dish without being overly shroomy. My favorite vessel for dipping was actually the cornichons provided on the side, as they offered a nice contrast from their acidity. It's hard for me to support a place that serves cheese fondue with a terrible bread basket. Fondue is only as good as the items you put into and the fondue itself. It seemed like Lavaux had one or the other but not both. My partner and I reserved a table for two to celebrate a special occasion. Upon arrival, while we were seated in a timely fashion, we were seated at a table that was unstable and wobbly. It also seemed as if the table we were seated at was not originally meant to seat us... as if our table wasn't ready and we were given a different table. More on that later. My partner and I ordered the three cheese fondue, a charcuterie board of duck and boar saucisson, duck prosciutto, and tasso, and a bottle of Les Parchets D'Emile (fruity balanced white wine). For dessert, we ordered the dark chocolate fondue for two. The cheese fondue arrived with a bread basket and a plate of pickles and potatoes on top of the meats we ordered. Usually, I'm not so picky with complimentary food since it's complimentary. But it must be a sin to serve a basket of soggy, strangely yeasty, bread lookalikes with cheese fondue. Lavaux needs to either outsource their bread or not serve it at all. At the very least, as you would expect from a fondue place, the cheese is decent and the meats are really enjoyable by themselves and combined with the cheese (my personal favorite was the duck prosciutto). I loved that the charcuterie included fig jam to counteract the salt and fat of the meats and cheese. The dark chocolate fondue, on the other hand, is a joke. I've had every percentage of dark chocolate and no one will convince me that what I was served was dark chocolate fondue. And with this "dark chocolate fondue" included sugary waffles, strawberries, and banana. I could suffer myself through some strawberries and bananas, but the sugary waffles with the milk chocolate was too sweet. We left half of the fondue unfinished and most of the waffles. Our waiter, rushing to take our finished food and unfinished wine, brought us our bill and informed us that our table was to be prepared for another party. This wouldn't have bothered me... if there wasn't a party of two who was clearly there before us, was told the same thing. My partner and I wanted to sit for a bit and finish our wine but instead were rushed out because we finished our food early. Back to my point earlier where my partner and I noticed that something was off about our seating arrangement. It looked like an example of bad table management hidden behind "friendly service". If I wanted fondue and wine, I could easily go to an artisanal cheese shop, butcher shop, and liquor store and whip it up at home. But I came to Lavaux expecting an experience.
