First, I want to say I will return to try their Sunday brunch or in cooler weather for their raclette and fondue. I was walking around Greenwich Village and was intrigued by the Swiss flag, as I previously spent a summer in Switzerland and have visited that beautiful country a number of times. But the restaurant and bar were completely empty. Others nearby were buzzing. Their sidewalk patio had folks at two tables. And me inside. We decided to stop by the Lavaux on Saturday night this past weekend. We had just seen a play that made me need a glass or two of wine, and the Lavaux was near our hotel. It was the perfect spot. It's a Swiss wine and fondue bar. Between that and the cozy, comfortable, warm ambiance, it's just where you want to be on a cold winter night. We sat at the bar, just across from the gondola (which you can reserve on Resy if cute gondolas are your thing). Sadly, we too full from our dinner to eat any fondue on this visit, but even if you don't eat fondue, you can smell it. The Lavaux smells like heaven - like pots and pots of fondue everywhere. They have an interesting and varied selection of Swiss wines; we tried a couple of Gamays, which were lovely - exactly what I wanted. Great wine, great service, and great ambiance. We came here because I saw a Reddit post talking about interesting experiences in Manhattan, and they mentioned the secret message party. So we got a reservation and tried it out! I have to say, I found the secret message party to be disappointing, but the food, ambiance and service were terrific! We got a classic cheese fondue, the server recommended the cheese blend. We each got wine, our server was so great. She let us try a couple different wines before we settled on what we each wanted. The fondue is absolutely delicious, to balance out the richness of the fondue. We also got a kale salad that was also very tasty. We didn't even have room for dessert, unfortunately. I really enjoyed the food, wine, and service. The secret message party was disappointing, because all other tables answered our questions, it just wasn't the level of interesting exchange that we were seeking. And most people in the restaurant didn't really seem into passing the messages. The LaVaux offers a unique fondue experience in the West Village. If you're a party of 2, try to book the gondola! It's fun to sit in. We had the traditional fondue for two and then we had the dessert chocolate fondue! Everything was incredibly yummy and warm. The server, Jordan was so kind and checked on us frequently. They have a selection of Swiss wines and you won't be disappointed no matter what you choose. Two bathrooms at the front of the restaurant plus a coat check which is nice. Perfect place to go on a cold night! I was very happy to learn they carry Swiss wines, which is not easy to find in the States. I tried the Saint-Saphorin chasselas (2023) and it was exquisite. Saint-Saphorin is one of my favorite villages in the Lavaux vineyards (near where I used to live), so it was really cool to be "taken" back there for a moment :) Jared did an amazing job taking care of us. We were able to reserve the gondola, then moved to the main dining room for dessert (since we wanted to get dessert but our time slot for the gondola was up). The food was good. Our Raclette tasted authentic, though it hardened over time, since the plate was not heated. The accoutrements and charcuterie also tasted authentic (even more so if they had included some pickled cocktail onions). I love how our server pronounced "Rösti" correctly. The bratwursts that came with it were good, though the rösti itself tasted to me more like a Jewish potato pancake than a Swiss rösti. The chocolate mousse and crème brûlée were good. Not too sweet (which is how I like them) and a good size after such a rich meal. Great times! I would definitely come back. read more

The reason why I gave this place one star is because of the staff, namely a bartender named Julie. Where do I begin? First and foremost, Julie is completely lost. She didn't know how to make a single drink from the happy hour menu, claiming that she is new and has no idea. Second, she was asking my friend, and I if we were on a date and insisted on showing us pictures of a guy, she was going to meet later in the day. Went here for a friend's birthday dinner! Service was good and so was the food and wine. To start, we had the Swiss salad which I recommend and the mixed charcuterie. Then we split the traditional and truffle fondue. It comes with cauliflower, potatoes, pickles, and bread. It was good, but we do wish that the bread came in pieces rather than slices. It was so fun to build different flavor combinations with the different cheeses/meats. Also it comes with some mini cornichons, flaky sea salt, jams, and other flavor enhancers. - Chalet's Pasta (8.6/10): This pasta was soo good! The fusilli pasta picked up the flavorful and creamy sauce so well. Honestly, I thought the dish would be bland but it really surprised me with the amount of flavor it had. Def recommend this dish - Jolicoeur Blanc Chassela: Obviously we had to order Swiss wines at a wine bar! The Lavaux imports directly from Swiss winemakers which is so cool. This restaurant has a nice atmosphere, but as a Swiss person, the authenticity here was the worsst that I have ever experienced. Along with the service. A restaurant that claims to specialize in fondue should know it's traditionally served with cubed bread, not slices. When I asked for cubes, the waiter initially refused, which was ridiculous and unnecessary. The fondue itself was also too heavy and lacked the proper consistency--it should be smoother and lighter. Fantastic cheese fondue, with the expected Swiss accoutrements of crusty bread, finger potatoes, and pickles. (So many places don't get the pickle thing.) We got the Traditional with garlic. Though there was very little garlic. Next time I'll ask for more. We also got one serving of the chocolate fondue, which was plenty for the two of us. Excellent dark chocolate, though the waffle bits were a tad dry. The service was good. We did have to summon her a few times, but no biggie as she was generally a few feet away. Went here for a Christmas, family style dinner for a large group of 10, and it was pretty fun. If you are in need for a shareable experience for a large group this is good. The fondue was good, would've loved to have more options for sides like maybe protein of some sort. The tomato and truffle are winners by far. Thankfully The Lavaux offers a perfectly executed option in a surprisingly (perhaps shockingly) uncrowned space in the West Village. On a most recent visit we shared the porcini-infused fondue, which added a nice dimension to the dish without being overly shroomy. My favorite vessel for dipping was actually the cornichons provided on the side, as they offered a nice contrast from their acidity. The raclette also tasted surprisingly sour to my tongue, but as someone who has never tried traditional raclette cheese, I couldn't be sure if it was supposed to taste like that. Simply mouth watering. We could not stop looking at each other with each bite and quietly moaning from delight. If you're all about atmosphere, experience and loads of cheese and chocolate. Who isn't right? This is THE PLACE. I could easily eat here once a week if it didn't make such a dent on my weekly budget. It is worth every penny. We're still dreaming of the next time we will visit which will be very soon. Spring is around the corner and we're all thinking of trimming our waist but this is a luxury you can't miss. Where else can you get delicious fondue. My wife and I had a stellar evening on a fancy night out. We split the kale salad to start, and then split the three-cheese fondue for our main. The salad was fresh, flavorful, and not too heavy; we were happy to start with something light before moving to the cheese fondue. The fondue was pure delight. Obviously at one level you can't go wrong melting a bunch of cheese together, but it was truly fantastic, better than other fondues we've had. If I would offer a mild criticism, I think the dippers aside from the bread (cooked cauliflower, cornichons, potatoes) were unexceptional - I would have liked maybe apples, raw cauliflower instead of cooked, and raw carrots or broccoli. But regardless we enjoyed every bite. For dessert we split the chocolate fondue, which was a dream. Here the dippers (bananas, strawberries, Belgian waffle bits) were perfect. I thought the waffles would be so-so but the waffles were flavorful with a perfect crunch to them. Our service was also stellar. At this kind of place one expects very good service, but my wife and I both thought that our waitress went above and beyond. Attentive without being overbearing, helpful with wine recommendations, great with a camera, and pleasant to talk to. I don't care as much about ambiance one way or the other, but it was a lovely setting, appropriate for fine dining.
