Absolutely appalling experience at Turks & Frogs. We came here on a Saturday night immediately after getting engaged with our parents, hoping to have one quick celebratory round of drinks before heading home. The bar was nearly empty. From the start, the service was bizarre. Our waiter told us every person at the table had to order a drink and that it had to be alcoholic, even though our mothers didn't want to drink. Regardless, we ordered cocktails and wine for the table. When the drinks arrived, multiple orders were wrong. We politely pointed it out, and instead of correcting it, the waiter rudely insisted that this was what we ordered and told us we should have been "more careful" if it wasn't what we wanted. We calmly explained that the drinks were simply incorrect. The situation then escalated in a way I've never experienced at any NYC bar. The waiter told us he no longer wanted to serve us and that we had to leave. He physically grabbed a drink out of my fiancé's hand and spilled it on his suit in the process. We asked for the manager expecting the situation to be de-escalated, but somehow it got worse. The manager told us there was now "bad energy" between us and the waiter and suggested taking us to the bar next door instead. No apology. No accountability. Not even acknowledgment of the drink spilled on my fiancé. As someone who frequents bars in the West Village, I have never experienced service this rude, aggressive, and unprofessional, especially at an almost empty bar. What should have been a happy, celebratory stop on the night of our engagement turned into a shocking and absurd experience. read more

All the usual classics definitely worth stopping. Always seems to be pretty chill when we go in there, so we enjoy it. Stopped in on a Thursday night before it got crowded. The back room was occupied by a party so we were seated in the front room. I had the unfortunate task of sitting in the seat next to the back room. The seat sticks out so every time passes by, you get hit in your seat. It was very annoying. Once the party cleared up, we moved to the back and had two comfortable arm chairs to sit on. The cheese plate is great as was the chocolate plate. I had two glasses of French wine. The bar is intimate and cozy. Service is good. Just try to sit in the back for a more enjoyable experience. read more

We had this little gem all to ourselves! Great old school type of set up. Has a fabulous wine list and also a full bar. Seating inside and outside. Great date spot with lots of secluded seating in the back area. Service was good as it was just us! I went with a glass of Sancerre and my friends had a Rosè and a Cabernet Sauvignon. All 3 were excellent pours and big globe glasses. I'm not a big white wine fan but on this extremely humid hot day I wasn't feeling the reds. So I'd always heard the Sancerre was a great dry . It was perfect for this balmy weather. Nice and cold too. My Rosè friend said the same. I tried the Cab and it was really good too. Quaint spot we found just walking the area. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about all the wines on the list and made a great orange wine recommendation. My friends and I split the bottle and had a great time catching up. When we first arrived we walked right in and were seated but by the time we left it was quite crowded, especially around the bar area. This used to be one of my favorite HH spots, but when we just went the waiter told us they haven't been doing happy hour in years - which is simply not true as I was just here a few months ago. He was also a little rude. Anyways, great ambiance but they need to update online they no longer do HH. And the waiter can be nicer! Went here for a quick rendezvous with a friend. Got there early and literally no one was there (5:45pm on a friday). Had a 6:30pm reservation as well. Was told could sit anywhere; so we sat in the back on the couch. About 1.5 hours later, one of the staff came over and said they have to kick us out because they have another reservation. I asked if we could move to another empty table; they said "you can go next door". GREAT service! Felt like we were in some chop shop that just turns tables and hopes they can get the most alcoholics in there so you drink a ton and don't notice the mediocre food offerings. Won't be returning. Garbage service. Garbage food. Okay ambiance. So many superior places in West Village, this one isn't worth your time and money. read more

Before I send a few light and satirical jabs at this place, let me just say that I really liked it, maybe even loved it, here. Turks and Frogs had a different layout than I imagined, but beyond the lively bar room there is a really comfortable back room that, despite the large group of drunk giggling women that entered conspiring to foil my date, is great for long, sprawling conversations. Luckily, their voices died down in my head the moment I ceased focusing on them. So, the people here are definitely cool, laid-back, and chill, which makes for a nice, Mediterranean vibe. When I walked in, they must not have noticed because no one ever welcomed me or offered a menu. I'm not fussy but it seemed odd. No matter, I like seating myself. We were then asked if we were waiting for our order and I slightly irritably implied that a menu would be nice. I mean, the place is small, so there aren't that many people to keep track of. A minute later, the dude came to get the menus, which was also kind of odd. I mostly found it amusing. We tried a bottle of the Turkish white (Emir from Çankaya). It was a decent, crisp, light-bodied white. Fairly innocuous and a nice quaffer, but not much to it. I was curious to try a Turkish white but I suspect the reds might be more interesting. Somehow I failed to register the music, but it must have been at least decent. Awesome place for a date or, apparently, for a gaggle of girls (in the back room). read more

A beautifully wine bar with a very homey atmosphere that serves an authentic menu of Turkish selections ranging from chacuterie and kofte sausages. I got the Turkish lamb kofte meal which was the perfect meal size of savory pairing with our glass of red. Would highly recommend to check out! read more

Perfect date place. The back room has a nice living room set up complete with sofas for lounging, candles and mirrors and art on the wall. It is very intimate. We had a great date night here! It was a random choice, we were walking by and it looked super cute inside so we decided to try it. We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. We sat at one of the tables in the bar area and ordered some wine and food. Every dish we had was really tasty. I highly recommend the falafel and the hummus. My husband loved the wine he had.. I had a ginger soda because we have a little one on the way.. I was glad they had some none alcoholic options. The place itself was really cozy and warm inside. This is the bf's sisters local spot, and I can see why. Dark & mysterious with candle light and red accents, I could spend many a night exploring their incredible wine list. Since we visited after a nice meal at Chow, I decided to get majority of the dessert wines out of the way: A sinfully sweet ice wine, a crisp Muscat, and a Porto that made you feel all warm and cozy inside did just the trick. I'd have to say they are a bit on the pricy side, but this is NYC and they aren't as spoiled as us West Coasters with our wine accessibility. Turks and Frogs is a quaint little bar in the west village that never fails to provide the setting for an enjoyable evening. What I like about T&F is that it's a nice place to take someone (say, a lady friend) out for a drink, but at the same time you won't have to fight for space. There always seem to be at least a seat at the bar if not a table in the main room or a spot on the couch in the back. We were told it was a 3 hour wait for The Spotted Pig. We were a little discouraged. We found Turks & Frogs! We had a drink each and had a long chat! We were happy... for the time being. Cute, cozy decor (red walls) and good drinks. Good West Village spot! ----------------- Went back on Friday night (12/7) and another great time here. (2 hour wait at The Spotted Pig this time...) I love the red walls, antique looking decor and leather furniture, old hardcover books tied together with tweed and the candle lit atmosphere... very very romantic. Went here on a Saturday night while waiting for a table at the Spotted Pig. It's kind of by itself in the next block east. This place is cool and really chill. I got a glass of Porto and my wife and friend both got a glass of Riesling. It was pretty decently priced - and it seems like a cool place for a date. read more

Great little wine bar in the West Village. Didn't try any food...or even look at a menu for that matter, so I cannot speak to the food options. However, the wine was divine. Feeling adventurous, we asked the waiter to suggest a bottle of turkish white. He told us that one white in particular was his fave Sold! Boy was he right. My recommendation for this, or any other place you go to where you aren't familiar with the wine list is ASK for recommendations. I know this seems obvious, but it is worth repeating nonethless. In this case, I was able to discover a fabulous varietal that I most certainly would not have tasted otherwise. Definitely a win. Other points about Turks & Frogs... Its tiny, and thankfully we arrived early so there was seating available. It filled up quickly though, as there aren't many tables here. With so many options nearby I could see how it would be easy to skip over this place for somewhere easier to get a table. Don't! I get nostalgic thinking about my time at this cozy intimate place. I love it here. My roommates and I saw it and had to walk in after debating for almost an hour on where we should go. I was really happy that we stumbled upon Turks & Frogs. The staff recommended a delicious Rose which we ended up getting a bottle of and splitting it in 3 for a very reasonable price. A recent visit on a Saturday night turned up a not-too-crowded, semi-romantic, fun-filled place with a decent wine selection, friendly staff, and lively conversation. The Schug Pinot Noir is a very good, smoky, unfiltered Pinot that you should try. As Dani O points out, they do a pretty generous pour, and have a nice selection of Turkish wines. A good place all around. Cozy & intimate. A tad on the noisy side, but hey, that's Manhattan. Also, the service was a bit brusque, but again, that's the NYC way. On the food side, I tried the grape leaves, which were good, though they could have been a bit firmer. Of course, this place is mainly about wine. I had a Garnacha that was quite lovely. I can't vouch for the other wines-by-the-glass, but the list looks great. Also, it's intelligently laid out in sections according to the type and character of wine, so you have a good idea ahead of time what kind of experience you're going to have. An eccentric name for a wine bar, nonetheless it was a nice experience. I had glass of Sauvignon Blanc and my food buddy Jean P. had a glass of Gruner Veltliner. We also had a small cheese plate to share. You can never go wrong with cheese and wine, it's a fact. The Sauvignon Blanc* from New Zealand was great. Crisp, elegant, and flowery is the only way I can describe it. If you are into white wines you should definitely give this a try. It really smells too pretty to drink. They only serve a few wines by the glass (which is on the first two pages). The rest are sold by the bottle. The cheese plate was served with 4 different cheeses, grapes, apricots, walnuts, strawberry jam, and warm pita bread. It was perfect for two people to share. The server offered us more pita bread but we had to decline since we had a dinner reservation elsewhere. They also offer free wifi!!! *Apparently New Zealand is famous for their Sauvignon Blancs so if you're ever in a wine/liquor store and confused about which one is good, one from New Zealand is your best bet. A lovely, intimate wine bar great for small group chatter. Our waiter led us past the bar through a set of French doors to an inner room, where we passed leather armchairs, coffee tables, and wooden bookshelves before being tucked away near the back corner. The atmosphere was so cozy and low-key that I felt like I was in someone's home. The volume wasn't too loud and my group was left undisturbed after orders were placed (con: we had to flag down our waiter for the check). We've been here a couple of times and won't be coming back. The lighting and decor is great and the wine is decent but, as a couple of the other reviews have pointed out, the service stinks. The first time we went the servers were inattentive and then overcharged us. The latter is not in itself a crime - mistakes happen - it was just the server's unapologetic manner which rankled. The second time - today - the service was off again. It felt like we were intruding on the space of a group of servers, some of them working tonight, others off tonight but in the bar for their own leisure. In between amusing each other the attention to customer of those who were working suffered, and the whole group gave off an air of proprietorial arrogance, as if we were lucky to be in their bar at all. That's not what you want when after tax and tip you're paying 15 dollars for a glass of wine. The owners also own the place next door, Orient Express. The service in there has always been excellent - no idea why they don't apply the same service principles to Turks and Frogs. Until that starts happening my advice would be to avoid this place. read more
