Was very underwhelmed by our breakfast experience at Dirty French. We arrived around 8:15 on Monday morning and were the only patrons in the restaurant. Despite that, service was slow and not friendly. The avocado toast was fine but very plain and the yogurt granola bowl was also just fine. Was also disappointed that they did not have bananas in house that could be added to the dish. Had a great dinner here, fortunately we were able to expand our reservation from 2 to 3 which was amazing service at late notice! We even got a "godfather" booth at the corner which gave us plenty of room and a great view of the restaurant. Our server was awesome, she gave some recommendations and didn't rush us one bit. The gimlet I got was FANTASTIC - they're often a little strong for me but the apricot and cinnamon perfect balanced the drink (I could've had one or two more honestly). The deviled eggs were good - they tasted like they had some chili oil or something with it which was interesting. The salmon was very light and cooked perfectly. Ordered ghe chicken persillade for my entree. Huge piece of chicken (its literally half the chicken), juicy and tender. We had an assortment of appetizers. The oysters bourguignon stuck out the most. Came here for my birthday and our server Pam absolutely made our night. She was so bubbly, fun, and informative about the menu. We were so appreciative of her during our meal. I have a gluten allergy and much of the menu was incredibly accommodating. They also have non alcoholic wine by the glass which is hard to find in the city! After my wife's visit at Arrojo Saturday afternoon, I wanted to take her to a fun spot for lunch. A place where we can get a well crafted cocktail and oysters. Dirty French has been on my radar for a while. Located on the Lower East side at the Ludlow hotel, I was able to find the hotel and snagged a sweet street parking spot out front. We were seated pretty quickly in a dimly lit booth. I can see there's a nice looking bar which is not manned Saturday afternoon. For a comparison, the bar at Pastis would have been packed solid. Our cocktails come out as well as our starter, Grilled Oysters. The oysters were very fresh and prepared perfectly. I was a little disappoined, I really wanted to try the famous Duck L'Orange but it wasn't on the lunch menu. My choice was the Burger Maison. This was a well crafted burger topped with Caramelized Onions, Raclette and all held together in a Brioche bun. The Frites? Fantastic. Not too salty. Very French. Very Ooh La La. I would say they were more slutty than dirty. Great Saturday Lunch, we'll need to come back for dinner. read more

Another Friday night dinner. Can't believe my last visit to DF was six years ago...and my opinion hasn't changed. Got the burger, which was good (but not French). Food was fine, but I'm glad I wasn't buying. Just reconfirmed that I won't go back on my own dime. Ludlow Hotel bar still rocks (although now they say seating by the fireplace is reserved for hotel guests, so it remained empty for quite some time, which was a little ridiculous when they had paying customers - us! - who wanted to take the seats). First of all, what a cool place!!! The ambiance in here is super unique and cozy. It has nice artwork around the bar and lounge area and the outdoor heated lounge looked super inviting but it was closed for some reason. We all ordered the burger and it was so goooood. If you want a perfectly cooked medium burger, it's here. The french fries that come with it are cut to perfection and are so crispy and delicious. When you order tea it comes in this adorable teapot and provides plenty of refills. I do think the menu is a bit overpriced ($28 for a burger is crazy) but at least the food was enjoyable. read more

I usually like to mark my birthday each year with dinner. Over the years I've picked a combo of my favorite spots and new places that I had been meaning to try for a while. This year, it was the latter as Dirty French was on my radar for quite some time. That being said, I booked a table and off we went. Dirty French is one of several restaurants owned by Major Food Group, the same company behind the hyped up Carbone and Torrisi. The restaurant is located inside the Ludlow Hotel, though it has its own entrance on the street so it doesn't give off hotel restaurant vibes. The dining area is all in one room - there's a combination of booths and tables with an impressive bar right when you enter and a lounge area in the back where you can enjoy a drink (I think this is shared space with the hotel). The decor is eclectic - kinda funky with knick knacks places throughout the dining room which makes it fun without being tacky. They were playing 80s music while we were there which added to the fun. As the name suggests, the menu consists of French cuisine - with a decent selection without being overwhelming. We were started with this flatbread that was served with a herbed fromage blanc. This was delicious - the flatbread was slightly grilled with mild seasoning and was soft and chewy; the fromage blanc provided a good balance. It was really everything you wanted out of a flatbread - bonus points for being complimentary. For my starter I had the saucisson which was served over lentils. The sausage itself was great - lots of flavor without being too salty. The lentils were flavored with mustard which really elevated them - a really good dish. For my main I decided on fish and went with the dover sole. This was delicious - the fish had great flavor and was prepared in a light but tasty sauce. We also got a few sides for the table - dirty rice, steamed spinach, and pommes Louis. All of these were great - the dirty rice had some heat to it which was welcome, and the pommes Louis were prepared home-fry style with herbs and garlic mmmm. We of course had dessert, and I went with the gateau au chocolat; I'm not a huge chocolate cake person but it just felt right being my born day. The cake was very good.- super chocolately and on the rich side (two people could have easily shared it, but I was up for the challenge). Service was great - everyone was friendly and food came out at a good pace. Overall, I had a great experience at Dirty French and it made for a memorable birthday. I'm not sure this is a 5-star experience, especially when compared to other MFG spots, however Dirty French holds their own and would definitely return for another meal. read more

Loved the way the restaurant was set up, the free bread we got was a nice touch and not too bad. I would not get the calamari from here, it tasted like rubber or it was just not cooked well, the grilled Oysters were pretty good, and the burger was average. The buns on the burger were a bit burnt which I didn't like but the fries were very good! I love that they fry them in duck fat The service was very eh, our waiter took our order and really only came back near the end when it was time for dessert/our check. I love a little French bistro, and this one is tucked away on Ludlow Street in the hotel. We weren't staying there, but were looking for a place to have breakfast and this offered a respite from some cold and rainy NYC weather. Service was slow even though it wasn't super crowded, but that's often expected in French restaurants where things are more leisurely. We were seated in a booth towards the back...I love a booth! The espresso machine was broken, but otherwise, everything was fantastic. Delicious food (I loved the pancakes!), friendly servers, cute decor, low lighting. I came here for a baby shower over the weekend. It was held in their private space upstairs and we had a dedicated bartender and server who were kind and attentive. Yes, I do celebrate my Birthday for the month so Dirty French made it on my birthday dining list for the month of October. I will say the hostess was super nice, checked me in and I was escorted to my table. Placed my drink order while I reviewed the menu. Well, my appetizer was Deviled Eggs and they could have been warm but they did taste good. For my entrée I got the scallops, fries and spinach and it was on point!!!!! To close out for dessert we had the beignets and ice cream. I will say the beignets could have been better the ice cream helped them taste better. The manager Emma was a doll she came over and gave us the details on the bread that they serve and I will say that was definitely the best bread that I have had. I can say I will be going back to Dirty French with my mate soon. If you are in the NYC area check out Dirty French. I will say take public transportation or a uber . Amazing doesn't sum up this restaurant! It was more than amazing! We had the back room reserved all to ourselves, with our own servers. We had an open bar which meant thi minute your glass was empty someone was there filming it up again. The restaurant was gorgeous with a very elegant feel to it. The service was what really did it for me though. They were extremely polite and helpful. If you left the table they refolded your napkin for you. The food was incredible!! We got a selection of small plates and a shellfish plateau. The Dover Sole Meuniere was my favorite!! The chicken and crepes was my second. Also, you can never go wrong with seafood, so bring it on! I LOVED THIS PLACE! The ambiance is incredible, low lighting and the restaurant has a fancy-hip vibe. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Our waiter was fast, got all of our drink orders in and got them back to us so we could start the night. Their menu is short, but the opportunity is endless. Fries were good. The service was good but after we finished and cleared plates they left us sitting for 10 minutes and I couldn't even get anyone's attention to ask them what desserts they have. So you'll have AC in the summer and heating in the winter. The food is standard with a French fair. We had the deviled eggs, wagu beef puff pastry, French dip sandwich and the burger and they were all delicious. The steak frites was great the last time I was there. Some menu items are a la cart. Part of Major Food Group, I went to this popular bistro with one of my usual groups to have their famous duck a l'orange and share a bunch of other other things. The space was nice and the service was friendly with good suggestions. I ordered a cocktail and the waiter came back and said that the menu had unfortunately changed and told me the current selections also saying that I could try a drink first to see if I like it which was very nice. I got the One Way Street ($18) with cognac, pineau, and golden raisin to drink. This was a delicious with a cognac base and good fruity elements but not overly sweet and I would recommend it. We were given the Flatbread With Fromage Blanc to begin with. Compared to most other modern restaurants where you have to pay for their nice bread, it was good to see that this place still serves theirs as part of the meal for free. This was a good starting bite albeit potentially a bit rich. The fresh warm flatbread paired nicely with the cheese. From the hors d'ouevres section, the Mushroom Millefeuille ($29) with butternut squash and red curry was delicious. The mushrooms were thin sliced and had a pleasant plumpness with a slightly crispy texture with the slightly sweet and herbal red curry being a good accompaniment. I am unsure the mushroom used but I have virtually 0 complaints about the dish. From the Plat Principal, their Duck A L'orange (I believe $49) was shared between two. The duck was crispy though I have had others which were more succulent with a better skin texture. The orange sauce however was outstanding. Not overly sweet and very well seasoned. My only complaint about said sauce would be perhaps that that there wasn't enough of it as a few of the pieces. From the same section, the Steak Au Poivre ($39 base with various prices) or steak with green peppercorn sauce was probably the weakest of the dishes. We got it with hanger steak without the frites so at the lowest price point. The steak was a bit small for the price and it could have been a bit more tender (even with it being hanger steak) but the peppercorn sauce was very well prepared. It's hard to recommend however with the portion size and with the slightly chewy pieces even with the excellent sauce. This is a quality French bistro with some protein issues. While the quality of the sauces are on point for the prices, I would say the actual meat (outside of the mushroom dish) was a bit lower quality compared to some other places which are a bit cheaper. The duck was a big drier than other spots and the steak was both small and a bit chewy. If the protein was as well prepared as their excellent sauces, I'd probably give a 5 but overall I'm stick with a 4. read more
