These handmade piñatas are so great! We drive up from SE Portland every year to get one. This is the fourth year we will be buying a piñata here. They are not inexpensive like the mass-produced kind one might find at Lippmann's or Walmart, but they are handmade using recycled material from everyday use for the base in the traditional manner. The outside of course is colorful new tissue/gift paper. Each section is painstakingly assembled. What beauty! What fun! read more

Let's talk piñatas for a minute, I know you've seen them, those crepe paper covered things hanging from the ceiling of the party store. They're the fun looking animals that you may have hit with a stick at a birthday party at some time in your past. Remember, when the candy fell out from inside after you hit the fourth time? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. For the most part, the art of piñata-making has given up the art for more of the business. Only the most expensive piñatas are made in the old-fashioned papier mache way, all the rest, including all the ones you'll find at Boom Boom's, are made of cardboard. Being made of cardboard instead of papier mache makes the piñata that much harder to actually break open (did I mention you're blindfolded when you're trying to bash the piñata?). With all that said, Boom Boom does offer you something the others don't, some variety. If you're tired of the Mickey Mouse© and Sleeping Beauty© piñatas, then you should take a look inside. Boom Boom doesn't have much in the way of curb appeal, but what it lacks in signage, it more than makes up for in creativity once you step inside. Boom Boom's Balloons is two storefronts joined in the middle via a large wall cutout which adds size to both spaces. One side is dedicated to all things piñata and the other is the namesake of the store. The piñata side is filled with many variations on the theme: flying dragons, tiny elephants, giant bees, bears, giraffes, and a host of cartoon characters, not to mention the ubiquitous donkey and the slightly rarer rainbow-coloured unicorn. They range in price from around $15 up to around $35 or so, with the larger piñatas costing more. For those of you that really want to stand out in the crowd, Boom Boom's will custom make you a piñata to your specifications. Bring in a photo, a sketch or a clay model and they'll craft your image in cardboard and tissue paper. "It's like looking in a mirror." For around the same money you'd pay for a run-of-the-mill generic piñata at some big box store, you can get a very cool hand-made piñata and along the way help support an underappreciated art form. TERRIBLE experience! Almost no selection of pinatas when I arrived. Ordered a pinata for a bday party. Owner agreed to pickup on 2 wks. Returned at 3pm on designated day in 100+ degree heat and they were closed! Called the owner, she acted very put-upon to come to the store but eventually she did. Showed her the invoice with the date in HER handwriting. Paid $35 in advance and my pinata was TERRIBLE. Crooked eyes--unacceptable quality compared to the pinata I saw and ordered from! Unhappy. I suggested she instead sell me another, acceptable pinata in its place-- she agreed, but only if I paid $5 MORE to absorb the price difference. ?!? Waste of my gasoline, time, and peace of mind. Let us recap: Waited over 45 minutes (thanks to a helpful shop next door that called her cell #) to pick up what I had already paid for, because they were closed on the pick up day... Poor quality of a product for a special event..... Unacceptable. Very bad customer service overall. Negative experience. Frustrated, I just asked for my money back. My advice: Shop elsewhere. Other places have pinatas around town. And, you can buy balloons anywhere. I gave this business a fair chance and was completely disappointed! read more

Friend one: "Wouldn't it be amazing to have a pinata of a mystical creature that's never actually been seen? Like, you know, a Chupacabra?" Friend two: "Uh, yea, actually. It WILL be amazing because I'm gonna run out and make that happen for you. Like, uh, right NOW. Cause I love you." I actually can't even flipping BELIEVE that I'm the first person to review this business. WTF? Okay, here's the deal. This place is a little off the beaten path (( unless you live off the beaten path....like me and all of my neighbors )) but it's not so far off the beaten path that you shouldn't get into/ onto your favorite type of trasportation device and go there. Now-ish. It kind of sucks when you want a pinata in the pacific northwest. Know what I mean? They seem as rare as hen's teeth when you are looking for one, right? Unless you want a stupid Hannah Montana thing. Or Elmo. Or whatever kids like these days. Go to Fred meyers if that type of mediocrite is okay with you. I'll wait. Walking into this business for the first time was like that scene in the Wizard of Oz where everything goes from dull black and white to screaming color in an instant. Blink your eyes and you are transported to a magical world where ALL is color and lovliness. There should be a policy at this store that all first time visitors be required to enter blindfolded. There are a ba-gillion types of mystical creatures here. Waiting to have the candy beaten out of them. The year before last we bought a mermaid and, though, at first, we quailed at the idea of hitting even the effigy of a woman/ seawoman/ mystical creature soon our bloodlust and desire for candy and drunken bravado took the reins of our conscience and pulled them far, far into the red zone. Last year we took the handpainted sign inside this store to heart and asked to comission a special pinata, the aforementioned chupacabra. It was, in a word, spectacular. So much more than I could have even thought possible. Well constructed (( seriously )) beatifully rendered with detail and flourish and, dare i say it? reverence for the noble chupacabra. I'll try to find a photograph. The comission cost a mere $35.00, as i recall. I've payed SO much more for SO much less SO often that I'm numb to the very act of paying. Please, please, if you value a good time, GO to this business, order a pinata, fill it with travel sized bottles of booze and shampoo and three month old Easter candy and condoms and maybe some stuffed toys or something. Hang it up with a group of your friends and neighbors and smash the crap out of it some warm summer evening. And remember to invite me! I'll be there with bells on. Deal? Deal! Okay, this place has the biggest selection of wacky (see what I did there?) piñatas! I came here a couple years ago and spent $45 on a 4 foot giraffe, and it was the best money I've ever spent. From creepy Ronald McDonald piñatas to ostriches, they literally have a huge selection. They also have decorations and party supplies for a quincenera in case you need it. Also, it's called Boom Boom Balloons, which is a pretty epic name for a party supply store. This is my one-stop shop for piñatas as there's a Walgreens next door if you need to fill it! read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. Terrible follow through and lack of accountability for bad business practices. I placed an order for a custom piñata with a one week lead time for pick up. I showed up on the agreed day to have the female owner shrugging her shoulders that she sold the piñata! She has an order form that she filled out with all of the details and date for pick up! Rather than apologize or offer to get another one, she tried to blame me for not paying in advance, when I offered too do so when I originally placed my order! It is one thing to sell someone's custom piñata to another customer it is an abomination to blame the customer for it. Do not shop here, save yourself the head ache and hard ache of supporting a business with no accountability or desire to even deliver to the customers whom try to guarantee them business. I read the super review from Jacob D., which convinced me of BBB over other places. But the phone number for BBB was no good; it was a fax number. I did several other searches to find another number for BBB, but it was always the same number, the number that made a screeching sound in my ear. Bummer. I called some other store. read more
