Had to stop by one of the last lesbian bars in the U.S. on my latest trip to Nashville! I don't go to bars often but this place was the perfect vibe for me. We went on a Sunday night so it wasn't super packed, which was probably for the best because it's not a super large building. Music was a bit loud so it was a bit difficult to hold a conversation without raising my voice a little. (Not a major issue though) I got the Pick Yo' Beef Boy and it was fantastic! Just a side note - I probably wouldn't get it if you're already ordering fried pickles as an appetizer, unless you wanna stomach full of the delicious snack. I'm thinking she accidentally skipped me, so I say, I was actually next in line. She gets pissed off, acts like I'm yelling at her and causing a scene. Tells me there's no order, she just takes whoever when clearly there was a line. She proceeds being rude, while treating me like I'm some angry black woman. Then she slams my card on the counter, throws my drinks together and passes them off. If you're there tonight, 7/12/25, she's wearing the "daddy" T-shirt with a black cap turned back. There's a huge age range here, and when we arrived around 9PM it was mostly women, but by the time we left a couple of hours later it was a more mixed crowd. On a recent trip to Nashville a friend & I had the good fortune to wander into The Lipstick Lounge, a women's bar that's welcoming to all, and seems to be a local institution. RoJo --an incredibly talented duo who happen to be twin sisters--were belting out Motown & 60/70's rock & roll tunes. The place was packed with a broad cross section of folks. Rojo is definitely beloved by the locals. We were having such a great time, we considered staying for karaoke. I'd never done karaoke, and had just enough liquid courage to approach the sound man, Jason, who we were told had the song book. He barked at me that he wasn't ready yet. We headed back to our table a bit taken aback and puzzled at the strength of his response. Hey, Jason, not the best way to interact with customers. We returned for brunch on Sunday. Our server was the adorable Lynn, a friendly young guy who was a pleasure to meet. He allowed us to sit & play cards for a little while before heading back to the airport. Lipstick is my favorite gay bar! The only better for me was Backstreet in the gay 90's when I lived in ATL and possible Blakes. Backstreet may be unbeatable; totally different type of gay bar. More similar to Nashvilles PLAY, THE dance place. Lipstick is much more than a bar. It's a community where gay people feel safe and loved unconditionally. It's as much a neighborhood bar than gay/ Lesbian bar. All ages from all walks of people that love people without prejudice of any kind come there. I've taken straight friends as there as first experience of a gay bar. They always want to come back because they love it. Always voted best karaoke in "the scene". Super frlendly owners, and staff! Great bar food, smoking room, patio to get away from the noise. Truth: Some may see their drink prices as high which they're not in comparison to other bars. It never bothers me cause I know the people they get their liquor from charge them more because its owned by women who are lesbians which is BS. We have a lot of work to do folks! After 30 years of being there were not going back to closet. Together we rise in love and love always wins! Parking can be an issue but always worth the walk. The neighborhood has fantastic architecture. The houses close by were built from the late 1800's to 1920. Have dinner at one of the great local restaurants at 5 points and end your evening with a short walk to the must see bar in Nashville! Canvas is a close 2nd but not as much a neighborhood bar. One critique I will say is the DJ Jason always makes fun of white girls saying they mess up songs but let's be honest everyone messes up sometimes. This was my very first time here, and I must say it was one of my favorite bar experiences ever. We came here for one of my friend's birthday, who is a regular here!
