I lived in Wheaton for a year in high school and during that year it became my favorite place. This popcorn store is one of the top reasons I love Wheaton so much. It's just a little hall with a door that used to be an alley : ) step 1) enter step 2) get in line (which is all you can do because there always is a line. At the end is always at the door and it takes up the whole space) step 3) tell them if you want popcorn so that it can be ready by the time you are finished choosing your delicious candies step 4) take a small brown bag step 5) slowly move towards the cashier while you pick and choose from a shelf of general store style candies (my favorites are the grapefruit flavored gummies and the red and blackberries) step 6) pay step 7) leave with candy, popcorn and the best feeling in the world! p.s. one time, a friend and I jumped into the fountain at the park a block away, collected all the quarters, and were able to purchase two whole bags of candy each from the popcorn shop. Score! p.p.s. another time, I went in with two pennies and bought just one piece of their 2 cent candies : ) delicious. You have not lived until you've visited this place. read more

Feeling sad? Come here and you immediately smile! Bright door, walk in and you can touch the walls from side to side. Long, narrow space with tons of cheap candy you buy by the bag. BUT, the real reason to come here is for the popcorn. I make popcorn at home in a bit old, seasoned 5 quart and everyone I make it for loves it. I drizzle it with real butter and sea salt. Well, that said, this place makes some damn good popcorn for cheap. It's the real deal. Yep, $2.50 for a large bag of homemade popcorn. My daughter and I get two medium size bags and walk around Wheaton in the summertime to check out the side walk sales. Pure, simple bliss. It doesn't get any better. It's a hallway with a roof and front and back doors - but you can't stand two people shoulder to shoulder sideways or there wouldn't be room for the wall of candy. The entire. wall. of. candy. twenty feet long. Five cents for a Tootsie Roll (my personal kryptonite) and ten cents for a sweet & sour Charms sucker, gummy worms, Chunkys, Pixy Stix... only a few of about 120 candy options for you there, folks. If salty is more your thing, pick up a giant bag of kettle popped popcorn for something like four bucks. Minus one star for the lack of really old school candies like Black Jack gum or Lik-m-Aid and things like that, but they have almost everything else I'd binge on if this joint wasn't all the way out in Wheaton. read more

The Little Popcorn Store is a place that is fun for young and old! It has been considered a "favorite" of my children for years! 1. It has a variety of fun and delicious pieces of candy for a very reasonable price, which is appealing. 2. It is very, very small and narrow- not that many customers can fit inside of it but, that is what makes it unique and fun. However, if the weather is not cooperating that day, then it is not the best day to make a trip down to this place. 3. The popcorn is a bit overpriced considering that it does not contain a lot of flavor. For people who enjoy salty snacks, this popcorn is not the treat for you. read more

This place is an icon and THE BEST thing about being raised in Wheaton. Although I moved a few towns away when I grew up, I do work in Wheaton so still make the occasional popcorn shop run. Most candy is now in the 10-25 cent range, but you can still get a cherry candy for 2 cents. Great mix of "classic" candies like fun dip, chic-o-stix, mary janes, and some of the newer candies. And where else can you buy one gummy shark? The popcorn is also great - it's white popcorn, perfectly salted. Not all buttery and greasy like lots of places, just darn good (and cheap) popcorn. Sure, it's tiny and crowded. As someone else said, you can't be claustrophobic, and you may need infinite patience for other people's kids, and to the yuppies out there - don't even bother, this place is not for you. For everyone else - it's worth at least a stop! Definitely my favorite part of Wheaton. read more

Had NO idea what to expect when I was told to check this place out. It isn't as much of a shop, as it is cabinets shoved in to a tiny alcove. But still, I grabbed my tiny white bag and filled it with 10 and 15 cent gems, most of which I haven't seen in years. I didnt even KNOW you could get individual Mallo Cups. I haven't tried their popcorn but I went in to peek at the store. It's adorable! You can find tons of old time, childhood candy that you didn't think existed anymore (bulls eyes, cow tails, candy cigarettes, bubble tape, etc). Definitely worth checking out a cheaply priced. BRING CASH! read more

Four fucking feet wide. It's a good thing I have claustrophilia. I don't much care for candy and was really there for the legendary popcorn. The narrow shop, wedged between two buildings in a former alleyway, sells a massive array of nostalgic dime-store candies, and most of the sweets won't cost you more than a handful of spare change. Seventy-five cents buys you a white paper bag filled enough light, irresistible white popcorn to share with a few friends, though I admit to scarfing down more than two-thirds of the stuff. It's made by an old-school hand-cranking method and seasoned with nothing more than a bit of salt and a proprietary oil blend. I WANT MORE NOWWWWWWWW. This is a unique LITTLE place. No stroller will fit in here and if you are coming after school, try not to feel claustrophobic. It literally was an alley that was made into the shop. That being said, this place has all that cool penny candy that you can never find in stores. Mary Janes, Bit O Honey, BB Bats, Mini malt balls, those bubble gum cigarettes (they were there last time I was, I know they're politically incorrect), it's all there. Grab the little white bag when you walk in the door and start stuffing it with your goodies. This place is called the Popcorn Shop because they make fresh popcorn and sell it by the bag. Great popcorn but annoying as Hell trying to get in and out of it as it's just a long corridor. No, really. We're not kidding, it's a 4-foot-wide corridor that was walled in. We love the corn but we look at the line coming out of the store and say the Hell with it, not worth it. Mary J. is right, kids love it, but we all know what that means...pushing, shoving, waiting for a four-year-old to pick out the perfect sucker... Built between two alleys, this is a claustrophobe's worst candy nightmare - and I hate people. This place is always packed, smells great, but the candy ain't cheap. I just don't like that many germs with my sugar. When in the area we go here for the smile from my son, but otherwise I hit Nuts N Sweets - only about twice as wide, and more expensive, but less shoving and sniffling. It does get really slippery in here too, so be careful. read more

This is one place I hope never closes down. I've been going here as long as I can remember to get popcorn, candy, soda- and it's always been great. It's a place that actually had PENNY candy in my lifetime(they don't anymore), which is really strange to think about now living in the city. This place is awesome, I used to come here over 25 years ago and was happy to hear it's still open for business. I took my daughter here for the first time today and she loved it. Lots of penny candies....well it's like $.10 a peice now days and fresh popcorn and caramel corn. If you have kids this is a place you need to take them at least once. Our favorite after dinner jaunt as kids. This place has been around for years and I hope it always stays apart of Wheaton. It's literally one little alley way in space. It's lined with shelves on your left filled with candy jars. You can take the little paper bags and fill them with the cAndy pieces of your choice or order freshly made popcorn in various sizes. It's so good it needs no fattening/artery clogging fake butter sauce; just a bit of salt. I believe it's still cash only. A city of Wheaton Staple! Every Candy you can imagine, plus more! Oh yeah, the popcorn is amazing! Really fair prices on everything. I remember the candy cigarettes and Wonka Chocolate Bars. MMMM. I don't remember having trouble moving in and out here as a kid, but with our nation's obesity crisis, I'm pretty sure there's been some candy knockdowns and not so pleasant belly rubs. OH well. I love the popcorn store! From the charming front door, brick interior, tiny alley-like shop, and penny candies. You can get a small bag of goodies you can't find anywhere else, and some things you can get at your local Walgreens. But it's somehow more special when you get it here. One thing that always creeped me out was how the kid would dump out the bag of candy (which is largely unwrapped), count it with his hands, then take cash. Next customer walks up, repeat. This is a place of my youth. My mom knew an owner and even worked her for a bit. A solid memory of penny candy and popcorn for the geese at Northside Park. However, now we know popcorn is bad for geese and they don't sell it anymore and the also don't sell penny candy anymore. :-( They lose a star for that....the penny and nickle candy is where it was at...their popcorn is still good and the nostalgia of this place always makes my heart smile. read more

The shop of my childhood, mine and so many more than even those that have posted on here. Literally built in an ally between two stores, this place speaks to a quieter time and a slower pace of life. The owners, whom I've not met, have done a wonderful job of keeping the spirit of the place intact. I remember going in there "if we're really good" as a kid and for all that changes in one's life as you one grows older, that place looks identical to my memories! Bins that stretch from the floor to the ceiling and from the front door for miles, the place seemed a recreation of Willy Wonka in real life. I've been coming here for almost 20 years, and in that time I've never been treated horribly. Unfortunately this would all change today. Let me first say, it wasn't one of the employees that work here that treated me like this; it was the owner! I walked in and there were some kids and a man in the shop who were getting ready to pay- a teenage girl was at the counter. One thing that was interesting was that they were trying to overcharge one of the kids, but he was very smart and pointed out the discrepancy of what was marked on their shelf (good for you!) I also noticed the candy selection wasn't as good as it used to be. Most of my favorites (the nostalgic candies) weren't even there anymore, and I could get most of what they had cheaper at CVS. I brought my candy up and the owner went to take care of me while the young girl went in the back. Right before he was about to pour my candy out and count it I noticed they didn't have the card swiper and the register like they used to.....which made me nervous because I had no bills and only a Debit card (though I did have like 6 dollars worth of quarters). You see, when I was little and started going here they ALWAYS only took cash...and then many years later they actually started accepting cards, which I thought was a wise choice. A year ago I went here with someone and bought quite a lot of candy and I remember us using a card for the purchase. So I ask him, "you still accept cards, right?" He looked at me like he wanted to kill me. "No.....we only take cash." I look nervously in my wallet and say, "well I have no cash." Before I could say that I had a ton of quarters...he viciously grabs the bag right out of my hand and angrily throws, I mean THROWS the candy out of the bag in the back area of the counter, and says "okay move, get out." It sort of startled me and when someone does that it sort of makes you feel like you are being attacked or something. Luckily I didn't burst into tears or anything, but I felt like throwing my quarters in his face. I really should have just shouted something at him and left, but there were kids behind me and I didn't want to freak them out (anymore then they probably already were by this fat vulture) so I played masochistic and said "oh i am so sorry i inconvenienced you.I would still like to buy some of the candy with my quarters." and can you believe He WAS STILL GOING TO ACT LIKE AN A-HOLE. He says, "well what the heck can you buy with that?" so I just picked the ones that already came packaged ( a small bag of whoppers and a small bag of sour patch kids, because I don't want to eat candy that touches his dirty gross poop smelly hands). Then he oh so nicely shouts, "and that's ten cents more! ten cents more for tax!" Seriously, this guy is probably why they invented the internet...so you don't have to deal with people like this in person. I'm ordering old fashioned candy from ONLINE from now on... Oh...and here's a tip to the owner-GET A BIG SIGN THAT SAYS "CASH ONLY" and put it in a place where people will actually notice it! oh yeah, and don't handle peoples' candy after you handle money and scratch your butt. read more

This store is the epitome of downtown Wheaton! It reminds me of childhood, and teenage-hood, and adulthood, and candy. And popcorn. Mmmmmmm. I love that the prices really haven't increased with inflation either! It seems as cheap as it did back in the day, which was a great day, because I was eating yummy candy. Beware to new customers: this store is mini! It's squished between 2 stores and is only as wide as the door you enter through. To your left are all the candy shelves, and the popcorn and cash register are at the back of the store. Bonus- the popcorn is delicious and not in the same greasy way that movie theater popcorn is. A favorite for young and old! Delicious popcorn popped right away. Popcorn comes stuffed to the rim in a paper bag, 2nd bag used as a lid. You can also ask to get your large popcorn to be put in an Xtra large bag for quick easy access for no additional cost. Candy starts at 5 cents and goes up from there. Just grab a little white bag and fill up as you make your way to the register. Flying saucers are my favorite but I admit, they are an acquired taste! The store and the owner are stapeles in Wheaton. If you're in the downtown you have to stop by. Don't get scared by the lines or the little kids, that's part of the fun.
