Stopped here on our way through Lexington. There was a short line. We ordered and got our food extremely quickly. There is a lot of seating and we did not have trouble finding a table. I have been coming to this Local Taco for a decade and it has recently gone down hill. I went this past Thursday and they were out of queso, guacamole, salad, and street corn. The line was to the door and I felt sorry for the girl at the register having to tell every customer they're out of all this stuff. We were told by an employee that somebody dropped the ball on ordering ingredients. It's unacceptable for a taco place not to have queso or guacamole. The manager should have sent someone to the grocery to pick up the ingredients they were missing. I did not order a margarita this time, but the time before their frozen margarita machine was not working. The buffalo chicken quesadillas were delicious as usual, but I like to dip them in my queso so they just didn't hit the same. I would recommend going to the hamburg location if you're wanting local taco. It is about 15 minutes away from this location. Their food and drinks have been consistently delicious every time. That location has a much better parking situation and is also much roomier, therefore less crowded. read more

This restaurant is a great place for a casual, quick, yet delicious meal. It is very spacious. There is a a large bar, high and low tables and large tables that seat up to 8. You order at the register and the food is brought out to your table. The tacos are small, so order at least 2, if you are hungry then you might even need 4. The Korean barbecue is my fav. The vegetables are soooo good and the serving size is enough for 2-3 people. All in all this a great spot. One minor, complaint, although the restaurant is very large, the ladies restroom only has a few stalls and a couple of sinks. read more

The Local Taco is truly a staple of Lexington, KY - I went to school at UK until 2018 and I swear this is the place that everyone loves and also the place you have your parents take you when they come in to visit you at school. The food is always good and fresh and the staff is always kind as well! Along with good food, I like that you order at the counter, take a number, and seat yourself. They have an option to sit indoors or on the patio which I also love. I had the great pleasure of returning to The Local Taco today and I ordered the Triple Crown Cheese Enchilada which I've never had before and I LOVED it. I also got a side of rice and raja salsa with chips. As always, I loved my meal and left with a full stomach and smile across my face. The Local Taco is usually crowded, even on cold midweek days when the surrounding restaurants aren't that busy. This one is purportedly expanding and adding another location, and it may take a few locations for them to meet demand. It's right next to UK's campus. When I dropped in, the ordering line moved rather slowly, but my food arrived rather quickly. I got enchiladas instead of tacos for the variety, and is was a nice-looking plate with plenty of things on it. Some things were a bit weird; a mushroom and spinach enchilada yields a filling that is kind of pureed mushrooms that I took some time to identify with some spinach leaves on top. A cheese enchilada was more straightforward, and paired nicely with a mix of beans and tater tots (which I ordered) and salad (which came automatically). Given their emphasis on local ingredients and a fairly universal and appealing menu, I can see why they're popular. I'm not sure I'd wait an hour in line, but I'd go when it's not a huge crowd. read more

1/3/21 Came here for drinks, my date ordered margaritas and chips and their trio dipping sauces. We got to sit at the bar, as they now have bar stools. I wasn't forced to wear a mask upon entry, but they have signs stating otherwise. There's parking in the back if you can't find any out front. The restaurant is following all of covid restrictions as in social distance and limited capacity, as well as the servers all wore masks and those in the kitchen or handling food had gloves on. I asked about the homemade guacamole the waitress said yes it was homemade I beg to differ all it was is a green paste with very little flavor... I frequent both locations of Local Taco - an excellent Lexington favorite. The location downtown is small and quaint with great atmosphere and frequented by UK students. Location in Hamburg is new and large with ample seating and a large bar. Great, fast service. Some of our favorites are the 2 taco and 2 side deal, or the 4 tacos for $15. Recently we had spicy shrimp, Buffalo, brisket, and southern fried tacos with pinto beans and Mexican rice as sides. All tacos were very good, but I'd say my least favorite was the brisket as it did not have a lot of flavor. Same for the Mexican rice... ended up putting some beans in it to give it a little something extra. I do not care for their salsa, but just a personal preference as I do not care for a lot of cilantro. Restaurant is clean, including the restrooms. Beer selection is decent, although a local favorite from Country Boy brewing was out and they do not carry Miller Lite - even in a bottle - which I find strange as the "Coca Cola" of beer. They did have both Dos Equis on draft which is our preference with this cuisine anyway. Not inexpensive, but reasonably priced for quality ingredients and something different. I don't even like Mexican food as much as most people, but Local Taco is one of my favorite places to order food from near campus. Some of the menu items can be hit or miss (I wouldn't order the mushroom & spinach enchilada or jalapeño slaw again), and it is slightly on the pricy side, but the food is mostly delicious and fresh, and worth the return for me. My personal favorites are the Fish, Spicy Shrimp and Korean BBQ tacos. Also I love the always friendly service. I do wish they had more pick-up order options, because currently you can only call or place a pick-up order through their website (which necessitates you order over and hour in advance of when you want to pick up). read more

This review is for my carryout experience. I volunteered to pick up lunch for my office today so I got to see the experience start to finish. I initially planned to place the order online, but once I began the process I saw that I was unable to add special requests, so I just decided to phone it in. This lunch was for a working meeting so we wanted to have the food at a certain time. I started calling about 20 minutes prior to the restaurant opening. I figured someone would answer since they do take carryout orders. Well I guess I was wrong on that note. The phone just rang and rang. I called back several more times with no answer. Finally about 5 minutes before they were scheduled to open, someone picked up. The order was placed with no problems, but they would not take any names for the orders. Since we had multiple orders, that would've been nice. I am pleased to say that the order was ready when I arrived a couple of minutes before they said it would be. It was bagged and ready to go and the bags were well stocked with napkins and plastic ware. When I got back to the office we discovered that nothing was labeled, so we had to open every container to figure out the orders. That was a little annoying to have to do that. Since the person that took the order wouldn't take names, at least everything should've been labeled. We had 5 different orders so it took a few minutes to sort through everything. Now let's talk about the food. The food was excellent. I had a tequila lime taco & the cocinero salad. Someone else ordered the same taco so they were both put together in one box. Another inconvenience that easily could have been eliminated had the order been separated or at least labeled. As a group, a variety of tacos were ordered and they all looked very good. My salad was good. It was made with fresh ingredients and was a generous portion. I actually only ate part of it and will have the rest for dinner. Also worth noting, is that they have no nutrition information listed on the website. As someone currently working on my health & fitness, I appreciate being able to see how many calories are in a dish. Possibly this will be added in the near future. Overall, the food was wonderful. My niece wanted to come here while we were in KY. She really enjoyed her fried chicken tacos and chips/ queso. The meal she got was very reasonable and she was quite satisfied. This particular location is really close to the UK campus , so it's very popular! Parking is definitely an issue here. Great location and super friendly staff.
