The menu is pretty big, and there are so many options. Portions are pretty big - the salads were huge, and there was no room for dessert! The sides are very flavorful, like the baked beans and Brussels. And if you get the chance to try them, the fried and smoked ribs are delicious! Food was very good but service doesn't make the grade. Server visited table once after food delivered and spent much of the time explaining why he was slow to meeting needs. Another customer left payment at table with invalid coupon and he had to deal with issue with manager. Couldnt wait until end of shift? Why was this our problem? Good servers observe what customer needs and keeps water, tea etc full. also knows what each customer ordered and can easily split bill. This server couldn't do either. Oooof. My group and I originally came to eat next door at Beau's Cafe, but after seeing a 45 minute wait we decided to come next door. Now we understand why no one was here and everyone was next door. There was no wait at J. renders and we were one of the first and only tables inside. There were seven of us and one child. The waitress was friendly enough, but struggled to meet our basic needs. I ordered an ice water multiple times and never recieved it. Another in our party ordered an espresso that took 15-20 minutes to arrive as we watched it sit on the counter for -9 minutes waiting to be delivered. The food took over 40 minutes to be delivered. I ordered the Benedict which was sat at the table completely cold. Not even slightly warm. I had others at my table try it to confirm and we all agreed it was worth telling the staff about. After pointing it out to the waitress I did ask for it to be taken off the bill but told her we didn't have time for a new one to be delivered. She didn't take it off, but instead discounted it 20 percent. The "poached egg" was a hard boiled egg on top of the Benedict that was also cold. (See photo) The brisket was dry. Everyone was very underwhelmed with their food, the wait, and the service. I could say many more things about the food, but you get it by now. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

First red flag was the lack of that smoky aroma in the air when you're truly smoking food on site. The restaurant was clean. Our waitress was pretty absent and inattentive. All of our food was served room temperature and severely lacked seasoning. The pulled chicken was juicy but the cornbread was so dry that it was inedible. The cornbread was cold and tasted like it had been made a day or so ago and kept in the fridge. The brisket was also very dry. The beans were probably some of the better ones we've had but none of the food tasted fresh. The mac and cheese noodles were way over done. As I said, none of the food was served hot, the cornbread was actually cold, so there is no way that it was freshly made. We do not recommend this restaurant. read more

We deem this place to be a 4.5- restaurant. We would go back to this restaurant if in the neighborhood. We were not impressed to the point of posting on social media or making plans to return soon with friends. Food was good--as expected Server Livvy was exceptional Ambiance was as expected considering it is a grill & bar establishment. Nice part of he city near the airport. We sat inside on a Friday night (6:00-7:00). Outside looked pleasant but we saw speakers being set up for live music and opted for inside. J Render's has some Good BBQ. It started with some spotty service, saved by the manager. I was a party of 1 looking to celebrate some certifications I had just completed and I was told the wait was over an hour. I was really surprised by that. There was seating at the bar but there was a large party waiting for their private room. While I waited for the bar to clear out the manager came over to clear the overwhelmed host area, found out I was a party of 1 and sat me immediately. My server was awesome, checked on me multiple times. I got a combo that came with an app bacon cheese fries, 2 meats pulled pork and brisket, 2 sides mac n cheese, baked beans and corn bread. Dessert was banana pudding not pictured because it was a snack for the hotel later. I also had 2 Lost coast tangerine wheat beers one of my favorites. I really liked J's wasn't my favorite BBQ spot in KY and was the most expensive but it's solid and I'll gladly eat there again with a reservation. read more

Trying out a new bbq spot in Lexington. We ordered the BBQ platter and banana pudding. Our sides were collard greens and baked beans. We called in the order and a very nice lady took our order. Upon arrival our food was ready and everything was bagged for us. There was a really nice and big patio seating area. Also there was a separate area where they can host events. Got the wing lunch special & the barbecue platter with brisket & 1/3 chicken, as sides got the baked beans, Brussel sprouts, french fries and the platter came with corn bread. The portions were generally sized and the price was reasonable. Shared these between two people and still had leftovers. The barbecue sauces were good. Splash, splatter and slather your plate till all you have left is an empty platter and some sloppy fingers. This place brings new meaning to finger licking good, but be sure to bring an extra shirt or a Tide Pen because surely in your exuberance you'll have "Bob Rossed" yourself. On our only visit I was not expecting anything other than an average meal. We were blown away. My wife had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. The chicken was better than the much ballyhooed restaurant on Tates Creek. Seasoned and fried perfectly. As good as my grandmothers. I had the French Dip. The best I've ever had. The depth of flavor was noticeable on my first bite. The dipping juice wasn't canned consommé like most restaurants serve. Again more flavor. My side salad was larger than I expected and perfect. I was excited to try this place during our half day in the Lexington area (Saturday 12:30) but it was a huge disappointment. Staff was okay overall but we were only checked up on once after receiving our food and then sat there a while waiting for our check too even though it was pretty empty. Our food wasn't good at all. The brussel sprouts were by far the best and freshest thing. Everything else was so dry and barely even warm. I'm not sure if drenching everything in bbq sauce could've saved it honestly. Even the "fatty brisket" was crazy dry. I did end up taking almost all of it home, chopping it up with sauce and it was somewhat edible. I know bbq isn't the easiest thing to cook in a larger scale so I hope my visit was just a fluke on quality. Answered all our questions about the menu and the live music they have Friday and Saturday night and didn't make us feel rushed to flip tables or anything. This has been the best find we've had since we found moerlin lager house in cincy on a day trip almost 2 years ago!! The brisket! the pulled pork! Those ribs??? All so good! I'm real picky about my corn bread but theirs is moist and delicious. We tried all the sauces to! The "some like it hot" spicy bbq was my favorite and my husbands favorite was the makers mark bbq but all of them were so good. You may be thinking this was expensive. you'd be wrong. This was affordable af for being such good food. The platter with 4 kinds of meat definitely didn't skimp on any of them and my Oh no you didn't sandwich had pulled pork and Mac and cheese oozing out the sides. First off.. Trevor our waiter was phenomenal. Attentive and did a great job for us having a party of 20 and other tables. The Oh No balls were excellent. They are fried pillows of goodness w Mac and cheese and pulled pork. Do not miss getting these. The burn ends were equally as good. I had the platter w 3 meats, sausage, brisket and pulled chicken and they were all tasty and great. The Mac and cheese was excellent and the cole slaw was really good as well. I went in there once and the guy told me to leave and so I asked like why the fuck do you even have it open then???? J. Renders is one of our favorite BBQ places in Lexington! My husband loves their brisket and I really like their BBQ pork. The meat doesn't come dressed, so you can add as much or as little sauce as you would like. We've liked pretty much all of the sides we've tried with the exception of the collard greens. In the warmer months, there is plenty of outdoor seating. They usually participate in Burger Week and serve an incredible burger topped with BBQ pork and mac & cheese! read more

Place is a classic in Lexington at this point. Excellent brisket, and the smoked chicken is equally as good. My fiance gets the half/quarter chicken every time we go, and she raves about it the whole time. The pulled pork was impressive as well. Sides were sides - nothing amazing but still very good. The price is GREAT for the quantity you get, like you are paying for two meals type quantity. The service is hit or miss. We've had excellent service, and service so bad we left since no one helped us. Really depends on the day. Regardless, its really, really good barbecue, and the price is great for what you get. The location itself is interesting, but it works out. Its quiet, as its in Beaumont, and has plenty of parking since its placed in the parking lot. No complaints there at all. Good flavor without overpowering smokey taste. Same with pork. The sides are amazing & varied. The collared greens are tender with tasty hints of vinegar.
