This place is amazing! Their fried chicken is gluten free & some of the sides are as well. Just ask your server. My boyfriend does not have to eat gluten free but he says the chicken is so delicious & you would never know the difference. I got their baked beans (which have pork) & their potato salad as my sides & they were so fresh. My boyfriend said their Mac & cheese is delicious as well. Their sweet iced tea is just right also & not too sweet. We had a server named LaToya & she was so friendly! Anytime we are in the Lexington area, we will definitely come back to visit. Keep in mind that all of their fried chicken is cooked fresh so you might have to wait a bit for it, but I promise that it is worth it. It is also a very casual restaurant with a great atmosphere. :)

We hadn't been in here in 3 plus years. Was looking for something indifferent for lunch. Both of our meals were good. Good lunch choice. Tried a piece of their chocolate pie. Very unique (Reminded you of a brownie crossed with pie) Everything we had was good & service was great...

The is spot is the place to be. From the fried chicken to the catfish. The flavor was there! Don't miss out. My husband and I were in Lexington for a festival and we wanted to try somewhere popular and local. We found Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken via Yelp and we were pleasantly surprised by the customer service and food quality. The restaurant is very casual and family friendly. We will definitely return!

I ordered fried chicken thighs and wings, which were well-seasoned, hot, and delicious. The ambiance is homely and very inviting. It feels like you're at home being inside and enjoying a home-cooked meal. Unless you're hungry, two pieces of chicken meat are enough, especially with an order of fries! There are plenty of free parking spots outside the restaurant. The staff is friendly and attentive to your needs when you're here as a guest.

The chicken was crispy, fresh'n hot and spiced to perfection! I'm coming back... But I'm leaving with spicy hot lips that are happy and well fed! Damn! Good chicken

This place was cool good music good people good food. I have it 4 stars because the wings were a little smaller than I expected but they were good. Two young ladies working were really nice and the place was closing but they still offered for me to stay and eat. Collard greens and Porkin beans were very good. I recommend you get food there

Oh my goodness! How have I not been here until today....I ordered the special for Lexington Resturant week... The fried green tomatoes, chicken, greens, and mac & cheese were seasoned to perfection, hot, and delicious. The chess pie was so yummy. Best service I have encountered in a while. It is refreshing to enjoy food prepared and served with love. Thank you....I will definitely visit again

If you're thinking at all of stopping here, just do it. It's a little hole in the wall looking place with indoor and outdoor seating. The service is absolutely fantastic. The food, is above and beyond, literally the BEST fried chicken I've ever had. There's a little kick in the meat. Personally, I recommend the dark meat, it's soooo juicy and FULL of flavor. The breading isn't too heavy and has so much flavor. The coconut pie is very rich and filling. The chess pie is a little like a brownie (definitely get it heated up with ice cream). Don't wait, just go! You can also order ahead but the experience of being here is awesome too. There's sinks outside the restrooms to wash your hands after fried chicken hands. Love this.

I mean what else is there to say, it's up there as maybe the best fried chicken I've had anywhere. recommend this to anyone in the area, as well as anyone driving by. The fries also were a surprise hit, covered in old bay seasoning. Service was a little slow during the day but everyone was kind and helpful.

While out shopping, the movies, and enjoying a great day in Lexington, the Fat Man and his wife…read moredecided to get a late lunch. We swung into Southern Cookhouse & Bar. Southern Cookhouse features scratch-made dishes using local ingredients, a variety of burgers, pizzas, and classic Southern entrees. I started with the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo because I love soup and all soup-adjacent things. The gumbo had a good, rich flavor from the roux, with subtle heat and a sweet finish. The chicken had a nice flavor, a little saltiness, and it was tender. The Andouille sausage was cooked well and rounded out the flavor profile. The tomatoes and scallions added brightness and crunch. The rice had a few hard pieces, but overall it was good. I do want to mention that I did find a few chicken bones in the dish, just so people are aware. My wife tried the Dunwoody Cobb, made with Grilled chicken breast, boiled eggs, bacon, avocado, tomato, and blue cheese crumbles, with spring mix tossed in Dijon vinaigrette. The lettuce was crunchy and fresh. The bacon had a great salt level, crunch, and crispiness. The avocado added a creamy richness to each bite, while the tomato's acidity cut through the Dijon mustard's sweet and bitter notes. The star of the show was the salty, nutty, creamy blue cheese crumbles, which meshed well with all the other components. The chicken was cooked well and had good flavor, but it was dry. While I avoided it, my wife said the boiled egg was well-cooked and added it to the salad. I had the Nashville Hot chicken, which comes with spicy pickles, coleslaw & mayo on slider rolls with potato salad. The potato salad was mustard-and-mayo-based. The potatoes were soft but still offered some texture. The mustard and mayo balanced each other and added flavor. There were eggs in the potato salad, but they blended into the background and did not stand out. The sweet pickle relish added crunch and texture without being overly sweet. I'm not sure if it was made in-house or from a container; it was good nonetheless. The slider was fresh, soft, and nicely toasted. The slaw was medium-chopped, with a great mayo ratio and a good sweetness, tasting fresh, crunchy, and creamy without being so rich as to drown out the vegetables or the chicken. The pickle was not spicy, but a thick-cut bread-and-butter type with a little sweetness and a velvety, buttery flavor. The chicken was juicy, tender, and cooked well. The Nashville-style spices were mild to medium, just enough to know it was there but not so overpowering that it was all you tasted. It was not overly oily either, which often plagues sandwiches of this type. The entire sandwich worked well together. Southern Cookhouse has a full menu, but some items do rotate or are seasonal. The bar is fully stocked, offering draft beer, tea, and soft drinks. They offer counter ordering, and the staff is very friendly. The Fat Man says that Southern Cookhouse & Bar is Fat Man Approved with 2 chins.
