I first tried Gus's at the pride festival over the weekend. I would rate the food--specifically the chicken--a 7/10; it was fairly salty, but the fries were quite good. However, I'm giving it a 3/5 stars because the cashier was not professional. She was rude and instead of engaging with me while I was trying to order, she was distracted, trying to communicate with one of her friends. This place is amazing! Their fried chicken is gluten free & some of the sides are as well. Just ask your server. My boyfriend does not have to eat gluten free but he says the chicken is so delicious & you would never know the difference. I got their baked beans (which have pork) & their potato salad as my sides & they were so fresh. My boyfriend said their Mac & cheese is delicious as well. Their sweet iced tea is just right also & not too sweet. We had a server named LaToya & she was so friendly! Anytime we are in the Lexington area, we will definitely come back to visit. Keep in mind that all of their fried chicken is cooked fresh so you might have to wait a bit for it, but I promise that it is worth it. We didn't actually go but we did door dash an order . My friend ordered a chicken leg seasoned fries and mac&cheese . The chicken leg itself was smaller than she expected , the fries were seasoned well but she didn't care for the mac&cheese she asked what the red stuff was on it . If I had to guess I'd say paprika and I say that because I didn't taste it . She paid a little over 21.00 for her dinner and sadly wasn't impressed with it . I've always heard really good things about Gus"s and I have to say I wasn't entirely impressed either . If you're thinking at all of stopping here, just do it. It's a little hole in the wall looking place with indoor and outdoor seating. The service is absolutely fantastic. The food, is above and beyond, literally the BEST fried chicken I've ever had. There's a little kick in the meat. Personally, I recommend the dark meat, it's soooo juicy and FULL of flavor. The breading isn't too heavy and has so much flavor. The coconut pie is very rich and filling. The chess pie is a little like a brownie (definitely get it heated up with ice cream). We decided to go with their chicken tenders on this New Year's Day, along with slaw, beans, Mac and cheese, and fries as sides. The food was good (not as good as the original location in Memphis) but the service was sooooo slow that it honestly took away from our dining experience. We arrived just as they opened as we wanted to have an early lunch before our 2 hour drive back home. Our service was nice & friendly - greeted us timely & took our order. We were literally the only ones dining, a few people came in to pick up to go orders. After waiting 40 min after we ordered, the server said I'm So sorry but your order didn't get turned in so I'm going to bring you some appetizers, nice jester but still annoyed. The apps were very well done - too overcooked. During this entire time the servers were just standing around chit chatting. When we received our food almost an hour after arriving, it was hot & delicious. If you are in a hurry or expect prompt service especially if only customers there, this isn't the place for you. This is ok fried chicken. It's nothing special and I wouldn't go out of my way for it. It's better than KFC but that is a really low bar. I like Popeyes spicy the best when it comes to fast food fried chicken. I haven't been to a Golden Corral in years but they had pretty good fried chicken at the time. Much better than this place. I've been to Gus's twice and glad I went back as the second time exceed my expectations. The first time I went I got it to-go and by the time I got home it was soggy and I felt like the chicken was inconsistent on the spice, some so hot I couldn't even eat and some with not spice at all. So my four review is because I wouldn't recommend getting it to go. But I believe in giving everything a fair try so I went back to give it a try fresh and dine-in. Overall the place was clean and for the most part people were following the 6 foot social distance rule, but I was surprised to see some tables close to each other (luckily people didn't sit in them) and that one employee wasn't the best at following the masks rule. I felt safe in general as I took a back corner table. Anyways to the food which is what everyone's most interested in or at least that's what I'm most interested in. We started with the fried pickles spears for someone that doesn't care for pickles they were pretty good. The batter stuck well and the pickle still had a bit of a crunch. The chicken was super flavorful, crispy and juice! The spice was perfect for me. The fried catfish was the star for me this time, not too fishy, a small bit of spice and crispy coating and their tartar sauce was amazing!
