Hmm... Mixed bag for our stay at The Lodge at Mammoth Cave. We were there just last week and the government shutdown had the cave closed which was heartbreaking but not a reflection on the lodge. The lodge, park and grounds were very quiet due to the shutdown. All the staff we encountered at the Lodge were very nice. The cafe there off the lobby had very affordable meals especially at breakfast. $8.50 for 2 eggs made to order, bacon/sausage, country potatoes and biscuits/toast! Breakfast was the winner, dinner was edible but not great. Definitely skip the "Hot Brown" sandwich. So why 3 stars? Our room (316) was extremely dated. And at close to $200 a night I expected better. There was an overpowering smell of mildew. The bathroom sink was cracked. The toilet was wobbly. Cracked tile in the dingy tub that also had a rusted shower curtain rod. read more

Staying inside our national park is always a treat. Not only are you closer to the attractions but a night hike is always a special event. Our room in the lodge was very large relative to the rooms most places now rent you. Unfortunately, it was very dated from the 50s. Our beds have seen better times. The linens and towels were average. Some lodges put a chocolate on your pillow at night while I found a stink bug on mine. A true national Park experience. I'd stay again just to be there! read more

Well, you're getting what you pay for. We were were lodged in the "300s" suites on the far end of the grounds, which was fine as far as location because everything is so close, and while the room is sizable, damn are you getting what you pay for (under $100/night). Everything is pretty dated and the bathroom is giving solid The Shining vibes, but hey, the value is there. There is another little cafe/convenience store at the main lodge where you can get some Starbucks coffee and load up on expensive protein bars, but we ate at the Green River Cafe for both breakfast and dinner out of convenience. Breakfast is awesome! We got plenty of eggs and bacon to protein-ize ourselves before a day of hiking, and our daughter enjoyed a massive fruit-yogurt-granola bowl. Prices were insanely reasonable. Dinner left a lot to be desired. We got yet another Hot Brown (after trying the OG version the night before in Louisville) for the sake of comparison, and well, this was definitely the low country Aramark version with a jarred sauce and subpar ingredients. The chicken caesar salad had that precooked chicken on it and the side of green beans were from a can. Very sad! The bourbon pecan pie had a mealy filling but the ice cream (allegedly locally sourced) was great. Moral of the story: come for breakfast, but maybe venture elsewhere for dinner. One final note: every single human being who works here is so friendly! Customer service in spades. Despite this three star review, we would indeed recommend staying here because it is just so well-positioned if your main focus is being near the park. read more

Very quiet & comfortable room. Very friendly & helpful staff. We have a fridge, toiletries, drip coffee pot, a/c, WiFi, phone & a t-v with a few channels. Convenient room in the lodge, steps to the footbridge to the caves. Grill & cafe are in the lodge with parking in front. This isn't for someone that doesn't like spiders or bugs. Food in general bland and no variety. The only true vegetable was a side sales. So I order the catfish grilled, not breaded fry, with two side salads, to make a big bowl, two night in a row. Stayed one night in the woodland cottages. Beyond disgusted. The room was filthy. Dead bugs everywhere as well as an open package of cookies beside the nightstand. Clearly not cleaned between guests. I did complain the next morning and Eric offered a refund and to clean the cottage or to be moved into the lodge itself, which is more like a hotel. We chose the latter and our remaining two nights were a lot better. read more

We stayed in one of the few rooms available in the Lodge itself, so the location was great. Close to the caves and visitor center, plenty of trails nearby, by the restaurant. The employees were friendly and got us checked in efficiently and there were random dogs coming in to the entrance and that's always great. The room itself was perfectly big enough for three with two large beds. The sheets were nice, the pillows were plush, the bathroom was decently sized. The beds weren't super soft but not horrible. But we did notice that the pillows, especially, had random stains on them, like spilled soda or something, which raised the question of if the sheets were washed at all or if the pillows were just flipped over for the next people. The historic cottages don't look like much from the outside, but the one I got had been redone fairly recently. Compact but clean and fresh on the inside. No microwave, TV or WiFi. There was a mini fridge and a coffee maker. Can't beat the location. Also, no shared walls. That's always nice. Be aware, you may encounter wild turkeys. read more

I loved being able to stay at the Lodge at Mammoth Cave because the ambiance is interesting and the food tasted delicious and it was so convenient for our morning tour. The room was big enough and was quite clean. The price at $145 was a standard rate for us. However. The big problem was that when whoever cleaned the room they used something with a very obnoxious odor. This was hard to get over. We all had A reaction to it. The beds seemed real old and sagging. The blow dryer did not work. I wouldn't recommend it to my friends. However, the people were all as nice as they could be. read more

Wifey and I stayed in one of their "Cabins". It was what you might expect. But for $93.00/night we got a terrible mattress, incredibly small room, no micro wave but it did have a small refrigerator. Tooo small bathroom with a shower that did not hold the drain cover which kept rolling and sliding on the shower floor. Very Drafty doors. They did supply our small room with large traps for the "Kentucky wood mice" as they are referred to. The window covering provide no privacy. Yes, I know it's a cabin, but for $93? I suppose I should review both the hotel and the restaurant separately, but they're linked together here. First, the hotel. We stayed in one of the Sunset Terrace Rooms, which had lovely views but were pretty old fashioned and musty inside. I know that the National Park Service doesn't have a terrific reputation for lodging, but this place was generally clean and functional. The repair guy (who had to fix our toilet twice because it wouldn't stop running) was prompt and sweet, and the cleaning ladies were super-nice about having to clean up an entire pot of cold coffee my two-year-old spilled on the carpeting. (We left them a nice tip, of course.) There were very few outlets for charging phones, ipads, computers, etc. There was not a hairdryer, which was mildly devastating for my mother-in-law. The beds were acceptably comfortable and reasonably clean. The three stars I am giving are for the location, which was perfect for all of our cave tours and hikes. Now, on to the meals. We only ate at the Travertine Restaurant, located in the hotel right across from the Visitor's Center. Generally we had good luck with the food there. The black cherry preserves and biscuits were fluffy and the best part of every breakfast and dinner. The food was acceptable and fairly reasonable for a sit-down place. The one steak I had there was pretty tough and not well cooked. I think the breakfasts were far better than the lunches or dinners, though those were decent. There are really neat photographs of the cave and its history inside the restaurant, and due to the horrible (may I repeat: HORRIBLE) food available in Cave City, we ended up eating every meal but one at the Travertine. The servers were kind, considering we brought our two very active boys (2 and 4) into their restaurant FIVE times in three days. I don't recommend any other option if you want to see the cave. Location is everything, and this hotel and restaurant are worth it just because of the location. read more

This is a great getaway for a family or a group of friends. Just think of going back 5-10 yrs ago when cabins had no television or fancy amenities but just what you needed to get through a weekend. The cabin my friends and I stayed in was a two bedroom, one bathroom and each room with its own sink. Located directly on Mammoth Caves Property, this is a perfect place to come and escape from the technological world and enjoy simple things like seeing the stars. One con I can think of, is the lack of fire pits per cabin. They are all located in one big area with a total of about 4-5. The outside of the cabin could definitely use some TLC, but it should not deter you from coming to enjoy the mammoth cave sites. Overall, good stay I enjoyed myself as did my friends. Definitely keep in mind of outdoor temperature, the rooms are not regulated and it can get a little toasty during the warmer months. read more

I decided that we ought to stay as close to the caves as possible, after I realized how slowly our group got moving in the morning. We stayed in the little motel/condo type building across the big parking lot from the main hotel. We were able to get three rooms for a weekday with less than 24 hours' notice. Our room was very clean. The bathroom was small, but everything worked just fine. We were supplied with fluffy towels, shampoo and soap. This place has all the usual amenities, just not as fancy as you've come to expect. We had a TV that we never turned on. The air conditioning worked very well to get the humidity out of the room. There were room-darkening drapes but I had to use my sleep mask, because the front porch light stayed on all night. I slept hard after traveling so far, and was ready to wake up and go on a cave tour the next morning. If you need a wireless connection, get the password from the hotel desk. You can get a signal in the hotel lobby and the restaurant. We couldn't get our cell phones to work inside the restaurant or in the visitor center. Step outside to get a cell tower. The hotel restaurant was comfy. We had dinner and breakfast there. Hubby and I split ribs for dinner. The sauce had darkened from being in the smoker for a long time, but did not taste burnt. At breakfast, we had the eggs & sausage. My sausage was still a little pink in the middle, but our waiter assured us that they were pre-cooked. So that was just fine with me. The restaurant wait staff is very, very friendly and pleasant. Made us feel right at home. The black cherry jelly on fresh biscuits *rocks!* Had that for both dinner and breakfast. We were able to attend a lecture about bats. There is an amphitheater behind a third part of the hotel -- the cottages. The park ranger showed us a slide show and answered our questions. She had a little device that could make the high-frequency sounds of the bats detectable by humans. We even saw a few bats -- a species that emerges earlier than the bats near our house. We really enjoyed that, and some of the kids asked very intelligent questions. This is a Lodge at a National Park. We had a handicap room...easy access, easy parking. GREAT location to the visitor center and some of the trails. Restaurant in the lodge making it very convenient . See separate review on restaurant ( we liked it ). Room has small refrigerator , two queen size beds, large bath with roll in shower. Tv has limited channels.. But the NATURE is fantastic... Why we came . Room has coffee maker and bottled water..which will need for hiking and cave tours. We stayed one night in the cabins here. They have about 10 of them and they are just a short walk from the hotel; however we arrived on a Thursday night and our cabin probably hadn't been used for at least a few weeks. There were some huge gross dead bees around the cabin, and some dirt or something on the bed linens. The bugs had been coming through a crack in the door where plastic tape had covered it up. To be honest, I kind of expected this for a National Park Cabin, which is why I'm not really disappointed, even though I usually would be outraged. The cabin was furnished with a small table and chair, TV, dresser, mini fridge and coffee pot (coffee was terrible but oh well) and the bed was fairly comfortable. The window unit air conditioner did a great job of cooling down the cabin. I would choose to stay a few feet away in the hotel next trip, but this was ok. read more

We stayed here on a visit to the park - I was simply looking for a place to sleep and shower that was convenient. It fit the bill. The place is rather spartan, and none too new, but really - you're at Mammoth Cave to enjoy the park, not the hotel. And they're run by the national park system. We stayed in the Heritage Trail rooms. They're small, but adequate. Apparently they also have a little bit of an ant problem, as well. Biggest plus? Super convenient. read more

I'm a fan for several reasons: our meals were good. we didn't stay in the hotel (we camped in the park which was great). we had lunch in the cafe (two vegetarian meals of black bean burger and portabello burger -- i believe they were vegan which is super duper awesome). we had breakfast the morning of our wonderful spelunking adventure and had a wonderful veg meal of scrambled eggs, biscuits (good God), veggie sausage, hash, and wonderful preserves. it wasn't vegan which is :( but we had extra food to take with us on our adventure. green buildings and practices (compostable to-go ware). we are always a fan of places keeping the environment in mind. there could be more of course that can make a park greener and our standards are quite high read more

When I made my reservation, the clerk was super informative and friendly. It was a special trip, so I paid a little extra for the "larger" room. The larger rooms are across the parking lot. These should be called the "bates motel" rooms. Old, dated, old, tired, old, and worn. The room was clean. The sheets were clean. The location was perfect. The price was right. No cell service. If you are going to spend a few days at Mammoth Cave NP this is the place to stay. You could not ask for a more conveniently located hotel. I stayed in one of the cabins; they are quaint and adorable but not very modern. I loved mine. I had a small front porch for enjoying the sunset. The bed was very comfortable. It was very quiet at night. It was clean, had a fridge, and a full bath. The only downside was that the windows didn't open, which pretty much required me to run the AC even though it was spring and definitely the sort of weather to sleep with the windows open. The hotel restaurant benefits from its convenience. The menu is quite limited but everything on it is good and it is reasonably priced. We were there for three nights so I think we tried just about everything on the menu. My sister gave high marks to the fried chicken. I loved the spaghetti dinner. They had some fabulous locally made jam (black cherry?) that was good enough to put on EVERYTHING. It is not fancy food but after spending a day in the cave and hiking about the hilly countryside it definitely hit the spot. Service was generally good. The staff were very friendly. The ambience is kind of late 70s cafeteria. The whole hotel is like that; it could definitely use a bit of updating. They sell bourbon-soaked cherries in the gift store so that was good. read more

Hotels in national parks have never been known for excessive opulence understandably the rooms have little to offer as compared to the splendor of a national park. Mammoth Cave Hotel and Restaurant are no different, most of the facilities haven't been updated in at least 17 years (the first time I was there) and appear to date from the mid 1980's. While the facilities in the main rooms aren't the most modern they are still adequate by all means just a little spartan, the extremely short walk to the visitor center, cave entrance, and trail system more than compensate for the facilities. We only frequented the Travertine Restaurant for the breakfast buffet which consisted of omelets, scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, fruit, oatmeal, cereals, and french toast sticks. We stayed in the Woodland Cabins for one of the two nights I had reserved. Pros: Great location. Close to everywhere you need to be for the tours and good access to walking and biking trails. Inexpensive. Lot's of wildlife right around the cabin. (But the same can be said for all the accommodations in the park.) Beds were relatively comfortable. Cons: Hotter than hell. No AC. They DO let you know this ahead of time but because I had made the reservations for early June I didn't expect a heat wave. Nights were ok and cooled off nicely but during the daytime, the cabin was an oven and we couldn't tolerate being inside even with the ceiling fans and the two extra fans I had brought. But more importantly, I felt dirty just touching anything in there. Because it is considered "rustic" I'm not sure how seriously they take cleaning. A few hours after we checked out we remembered that we had left the charger for a cell phone in the cabin. We were told at the hotel that the cord was there but housekeeping just left it instead of putting it in lost and found. So, we went back to the cabin and asked the nice folks there for the charger which they were happy to return. But they also asked us if we would like to have the two hotdogs we had left in the fridge which told me the housekeepers didn't even open the fridge to check it while they were there. I give it a three star because the cabins would probably be acceptable to some people. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I was able to cancel the second night without penalty and we got a nice clean hotel room! read more

Can't beat the location! Literally on top of the attraction you came to visit. I didn't actually stay here; we stayed at the campground next door. But we did have breakfast here and it was delicious. There are free ranger lead activities in the evening for little ones. And when you're not underground, there's loads to do aboveground in the nearby beautiful forests as well. read more

We stayed in the historic cottages across the parking lot from the main hotel. I've stayed in a lot of national park cottages, and these were by far the filthiest and most "rustic." There were cobwebs, dust on every surface other than the main tabletops, eggshells (?!) in the carpet, and, of course, dead bugs everywhere. Also a nice wasp's nest directly above our door. Our blanket had a quarter-sized hole in it. All of the bathroom fixtures were metal and rusty. There was a shampoo and shower gel dispenser in the shower with a nice green patina on certain parts of it--- not exactly something I wanted to touch while trying to get clean. I certainly understand sparse accommodations, but filth is not acceptable in any hotel, "historic" or not. I did enjoy the restaurant, though. I could tell there were a few glitches on account of it being the end of the season, but nothing that was a dealbreaker. We ate there three times, after all! I hope that in the future, they gut these cottages, replace every metal fixture with easier-to-maintain ceramic or even plastic, sand or powerwash the wood instead of just painting over it, and get a couple of new blankets. Hire new or re-train the cleaning staff, and then you'll be in business! read more

The Mammoth Cave Hotel consists of a main hotel building and a number of outer rooms/cabins to chose from, depending on the group size and the time of year. We stayed in the Sunset Terrace area, which is fashioned like an old-time motel, with a block of units side by side south of the main hotel. The price is definitely right for the rooms - we paid $65 a night plus tax for a double queen bed room and that was a real bargain. It was that price due to the time of year, and I think the price rises as the summer advances. First thing to remember is that this is a NATIONAL PARK, not the Ritz Carlton in New York. The rooms are made to be comfortable and efficient, not the lap of luxury and you are not paying for the lap of luxury. It's like a step up from camping, but not a huge step, you know? I get tired of reading reviews here expecting this to be something that is never promised. The room was clean and had more amenities than I thought it would - it had a small refrigerator with upper freezer and had I known that, I would have brought along more food and drinks for the family for breakfast and lunch times. The room had two queen beds, a desk, a table and chairs and in the closet was a folding table that we used for games and for meals. The bathroom had a nice tub/shower combination with soap and shampoo dispensers on the wall. We had a problem with the sink or the toilet leaking, and we reported it, but it took a day to get it worked on. It wasn't a big problem and was not something I would count against them as I know it was the first week of the year for these units to be opened and those kind of things can happen. We had a good window unit air conditioner that worked well and kept us cool in the unseasonably warm March weather. The maid service was efficient and one of the kids on the trip had an accident on one of the beds which they did not complain about and cleaned up with a nice note to us (we had left one to apologize). I left a big tip as I felt they had really gone beyond in cleaning that up. We did have a small issue with red wasps - had one in the room on two different days, but come on, this is a park and there were bees and wasps flying around all over the place. We got them out on each day with no casualties on either human or bug part. Lots of wildlife in the hotel area at about 5 p.m. everyday - we loved seeing the deer, turkeys and other animals in the "wild". I asked a ranger about them being so available and she told me that they know they are not hunted there, so they feel comfortable with humans and cars. The room location was close enough to walk over to the hotel and through it to the Mammoth Cave visitor center or the hotel restaurant and gift shop, yet far enough away to be quiet and calm after a day of adventuring in the caves. If you want a four star hotel, don't come here. If you want a good place to stay while visiting Mammoth Cave and have the right expectations, this is the place for you. read more

The Crystal Lake Cafe is where we ate. There is another restaurant next door in the hotel called the Travertine. The decor is decidedly old fashioned, but I like it. Given the historic nature of the cave and tours I thought it was fitting. Service was great, and the food was solid if not fancy. I know people get on this site and say that Sunset Terrace are clean,older, rooms but we were not so lucky. We rented three rooms 317 318 and 319 and there were issues with each and every one.. They all had mold around the tub and the bottoms of the tub were filthy. 317 the toilet kept stopping up however they were kind enough to leave a plunger in the room, 318 the tub would not drain so you took a shower in a foot of water and 319 smelled like sewer and the toilet ran continuously. I do not recommend this place, I would prefer not to even give it one star but you have to do that. read more

I stayed in the rustic cabins and was not impressed. Right when we walked in we noticed 2 enormous dead bees. This compromised the cleanliness of everything in the cabin. There was a fair amount of dead bugs and dirt scattered about. The last guests were probably there a week ago and it had not been re-cleaned since. I recommend the hotel, which is also steps from the cave, but probably a little cleaner and more modern. read more

We decided to stay at the hotel for convenience, as it's located right next to the visitor's center. That was the best thing about the hotel- we were disappointed that it wasn't a fancier place, more like the lodges you would expect at a National Park. It was clean and the staff was friendly, but the rooms are very dated. It is quite old, our room's carpet looked like it had seen better days, the chair had fabric coming off, and the tile was coming up from around the toilet. I would suggest staying elsewhere if you're looking for someplace nicer, but if you just want a decent place to stay close by, go for it. read more

It's what you would expect of a cabin, but the housekeeping was not up to par! We stayed in the woodland cabins and had 1 double and 3 twins-very spacious considering. One of the twin bed frames was broken and the bed was totally Lob sided and quite uncomfortable. Housekeeping did not replace the dirty towels on the floor of the shower leaving us with no washclothes the second night. They also did not replace the coffee cups and toilet paper. The benefit of staying here is avoiding the long road in and out of the park each day which was worth it for us! read more

This is the perfect place to stay if you're in Mammoth Cave National Park for the hiking and the cave tours. This is NOT the kind of place for families who expect a pool and 50 channels. The rooms are small, but clean, and the beds are comfortable. Probably the best thing about the location is the fact that some of the hiking trails are literally outside your door, and if you have an early morning cave tour, it's just a five minute walk to the visitor's center. Let me stress though; do NOT expect big chain-hotel standards or decor. But if you're the kind of person who's visiting a national park to enjoy as much of the nature as possible, you'll enjoy your stay here. read more

The fried chicken, biscuits, and black cherry preserves were great though. I always wondered way my mother (she's from the south) would over cook her veggies, and wouldn't you know this is how they are there. I guess its a southern thing!! Stay away from that crappy burger joint, The Troglobite....something, forgot the name but its the place out on the patio. It's for kids that want a crappy burger. So when we decided to eat something different we traveled to Glasgow, which is isn't far at all but when we got back on the 65 which was 5miles from our exiet, BAM 3 hrs of traffic. There was a freak either accident or road construction on the turnpike and we were stuck in traffic for 3 hours!!! We ended up missing a tour because of this and around hour 2 the jokes had ended, our bladders were full and out spirits were broken. So after that we just stayed put. Living here in CA, I've seen my fair share of traffic but 3hrs for 5 miles, I wanted to cry. Now the hotel...Loved the balcony and sat out there as much as I could. Plus great for squirrel watching. Our room was in the back so we had a view of the historic entrance trail which was nice. The room was old in style although we had a flat screen TV with only 10 channels. You're staying IN the park. Repeat to yourself: We're IN the park. The rooms (not the cabins) were cramped and musty. I imagine there are wheelchair ramps, but I couldn't find them. I ended up lifting the luggage cart down a few stairs to get it to our room. On the first floor, you get a tiny concrete slab with chairs as a patio. (preferable to staying in the room) I've reviewed the cafeteria. I was told Trogs weren't open for lunch, so we had to eat lunch out of the vending machines. Travertine is also not open for lunch but does boast one thing that is unique in this county. Alcohol. Specifically beer & wine. It's a dry county. Effectively, this means there are NO good restaurants of note. No chain restaurant will ever locate there if they can't serve alcohol. Either you stay & drink at the hotel, or you get the he11 out of dodge.
