I went to see The Shape of Water in Theater 1 and it was FREEZING COLD. I had to wear my hat and jacket and I was still cold. This is not the first time I have had this experience at the Loft. One time I asked them to make it warmer and nothing changed. I thought maybe that was just the summer, but here we are in late December with the A/C on. I really want to support a local, independent theater, but the temperature just makes it too unpleasant. read more

I absolutely love it here! My only problem is they stop serving halfway through the last showing of a film. I've seen great classics such as evil dead, eraserhead, rocky horror to new films like the zero theorem. . always a great time..I adore the staff and I feel right at home among true lovers of film. This place is great! Was down there the other weekend after a 20 year hiatus (residing in Phoenix currently) and it still had the same feeling! Used to perform in the Rocky Horror Picture Show when I was younger and brought back some nice memories. Not the most comfortable theater to sit in, but still one of the most fun to visit! I'm not one for indie movies or The Rocky Horror Picture Show dweeb fanatics that litter this place every Saturday around midnight, but I do love beer and pizza and some classic films they showcase here like Bond, The Goonies, Fight Club, stuff like that. It was great to see James Bond on a big screen since I was born in the early 80s and didn't get to see them when they first came out. The theaters are a bit cramped and dirty, but five bucks (cheaper with your CatCard, hold onto it, grads!) to see classic flicks, drink beer, and eat pizza, that's a nice deal. read more

This has got to be the best theatre in town! As a film lover there are movies that I want to see but can't find them, this is the place to find them! They play movies that you can't find anywhere else/you have a hard time finding. They have great events too such as the All Night Scream O Rama, I recomend it if you love horror movies and want to sit for 12 hours watching them. Only theatre you can drink beer in too! Had a great time when I brought the staff of YouSocial to the Internet Cat Film Festival about a month ago. They are very accommodating and the staff is great. They all know that the job of the Loft is to keep the customers coming back and this is so different the other movie theaters. If I could bestow a sixth star to Max & Co., I would. If The Loft somehow folded, I would consider relocating. A culture of serious celluloid worship thrives here at the nexus between the Art Institute with all of its whacky young auteurs and indie cinema. The best event is the First Friday Shorts which is an edgy gong show event where local filmmakers enter films up to 15 minutes long which range from hilarious to downright frightening. The audience can scream "Gong it!" or "Let it play" and master of ceremonies Max Cannon adds cool commentary while roasting the budding directors. And where else can a film fan imbibe in canned Chilean wine while sitting next to a leather clad crew of transvestites, hmmm? Mondo Mondays upstairs are also worth a look, and the flop couches in front are a fine place to enjoy carefully selected 70s blaxploitation films with like minded couch taters. The Fox got the historic rehab $, but The Loft has the talent. read more

If you love movies and are tired of Marvel comic book blockbusters, this is the place for you.This somewhat quirky art house theater enriches Tucson's cultural scene immeasurably. I especially enjoy it when the Loft invites experts to talk about a theme that is showcased in a movie. One suggestion - the parking lot is very dark at night. Easily the best theater in Tucson and Arizona in general. The layout in very nice, they have great staff, a good food/drink selection with a few good craft beers, and are always playing good movies. They have three theaters which are all nice. The upstairs one is flat which makes it harder to see from the back if your short so be aware of that when choosing your seating though. read more

I love indie movie theaters due to their diverse selections and (usually) lower prices and smaller crowds. I watched "Song of the Sea" here on a Saturday morning. I was expecting to see a bunch of kids and their parents, but the theater was mostly empty. The matinee price was $6.75 which isn't bad at all. They do have a student discount, but the matinee is cheaper than that. I didn't sample any of their concessions, but I think it's cool that they sell beer and wine. Overall, I had a good experience and the movie was great, by the way! Would come back here if there's a movie I want to see playing. read more

We went there for a Saturday matinee. All their advertising says they have pizza. When we went to the counter we were told pizza only at night. Ok, so where can we go for carryout in the area? They mentioned their pizza vendor down the street. When we got back to the theater, we were told no outside food. I explained it was their vendor. Didn't matter, we could eat it outside. It happens to be 104 degrees outside, don't think that's an option. It didn't matter that we were going to buy beer and wine from them. We asked for a refund, nope, vouchers only. This is the most pompous attitude I've encountered in a long time. Perhaps they think they're above customer service since they have the only theatre like theirs in town. I'm lodging a false advertising complaint against them. read more

I love the loft! I've been here for Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cult Classics, other special events as well as "regular" screenings. The prices are fair, they have pizza and beer and the staff is always helpful. Really, an almost perfect rating with 100 reviews - there isn't much else to say! This place has character - from the couches in theatre 2, to the farmers' market, to the lonely hearts club on Mondays (which I think has evolved into another comedy venture), this place is great for just hanging out. The cult classics are probably my favorite events. During Monty Python & the Holy Grail, people brought coconuts and played the horse-clomping sounds. During Wrath of Kahn, the whole audience erupted into, "KAAAAAAHHHHHNNNN!" and on and on. Full disclosure, I am a loft member, and I decided to purchase the membership as a gift for myself and my guy because we love supporting the loft. You get a free small popcorn and discounts on tickets as well as two free tickets when you sign up. If you go often, it's absolutely worth it. I tell people I don't like to go to the movies, but I like to go to the Loft. I think it's because I'm a total building whore, and I love the retro decor of The Loft. I love the red bathrooms, I love how big the main theater is and the couches upstairs. I love the cult classics, the photo booth in the lobby, the medium popcorn and drink combo, the fact that they sell Ace Pear, and I love any sort of singalong or Rocky Horror performance. read more

What can I say about the Loft Cinema? Its like a big old shining beacon of light cutting through the night. It is salvation for movie lovers. I live in tempe but come down just for the night so I can partake in the awesome cult classics they show at the loft. I am one of those people who believes that seeing a movie on the big screen is so much better than seeing it on your crappy tv at home. Even if you have a sweet flat screen lcd blah blah blah tv its not the same. So I'd drive the 92 miles to Tucson just so I can see Robocop on the big screen. The first cult classic I saw down there was Road Warrior. My brother and I went in the theater and one of the theater patrons actually dressed up as mad max, it was great! Other treats I have seen down there are star trek 2, aliens, pee wees big adventure, and many others. I also went down to see that French movie with the aliens that take over human bodies. I forget the name but it has Johnny Depp's wife in it. Anyways, I don't know what I would do without the loft, they are freaking awesome. read more

The Loft shows a variety of films at good prices. Some of the films are not likely to be shown anywhere else in Tucson. A true film buff loves this theatre. My only complaint is the hearing devices often do not allow me to understand all the dialog clearly. so I prefer movies with sub-titles. read more

Used to be a great theater. I've been going here for decades. It's really gone downhill lately though. Everything is dirty and run down. I recently saw a foreign film there and the subtitles were off the screen distorted on the wall, not even legible. I asked for a refund only about 10 minutes into the show, but nope. They gave me a free pass to see another unwatchable movie some other time. My advice to you is just rent the movie, you won't have to watch it there and that's got to be a bonus. read more

Poor example of theater management Got to the theater and the smell of floor sealant permeated the entire building to the point of nausea you don't do this during the middle of the day when you were showing movies. We had get our money back and leave. read more

The Loft is not only the best theatre in town. It's the only independently owned first run, AND cult, classic theatre in town. It's also a non-profit and and educational facility. They bring in filmmakers, and authors on a regular basis, have great film festivals, and is a huge contribution to the Tucson cultural scene. PLUS when you are a member (best membership in town) you get free monthly movies and free popcorn for every movie you go to. And where else can you see Rocky Horror???? The upstairs theatre is intimate and if you don't mind sitting close, you can sit on a couch. The downstairs theatre is huge (500 seats I think), and now that the air conditioning system has been fixed, very comfortable. Also, they serve alcohol. You can even get mimosas on Sunday. The people who work there are cool, the movies are a trip (Friday/Sat. night classics is my fav), and it's a wonderful opportunity for us to see films we'd normally never even know about. This is a good as movie going gets. read more

The Loft is the best! They show classic and indie films and really bring a feeling of community. The theaters themselves have great seating (they have couches in the front row) and you can meet some great people there. If you want to really diversify yourself then I would recommend the loft.
