In the last month at the Loft Cinema we have enjoyed Asteroid City, Oppenheimer, and the Beatlemania sing-along, at the Loft Cinema. The last was especially memorable - people of all ages were singing and dancing along with the Beatles movie, and some were wearing costumes. Several people shared their Beatles stories. What may seem like the one drawback - a long concession line that can run outside and back in a big loop - turns out to be a great benefit. The line is a great social scene, with always-friendly strangers starting up friendly and cross-generational conversations in a way not often seen elsewhere in Tucson. Even movies shown at the chain theaters are somehow more special when seen at the Loft Cinema. read more

Purchased tickets for "spirited away" online and Paid the "service fee" that the host at the loft told us the last time we were there and waited in line, that purchasing tickets online was the way to avoid the long lines . Not true. We were stuck in line after paying the service fee anyway, and when inquiring about at least getting a small bag of popcorn to cover the lame "service fee" the ticket agent told us, "sorry but that's not how they operate. You know, I've been going to the loft since the early 90's. I'm all about supporting independent legacy Tucson businesses but c'mon, show some class and don't give me this snooty hipster attitude on top of it. M read more

I am a member of this non-profit theater. Jeff Yanc, Loft Cinema Program Director, is the host of very enjoyable events. I especially love the sing a long events. Science on Screen has been another series I have been lucky to attend. What other theater do you go to which regularly has prizes for coming to the indie movies? Just when I fear there is nothing happening, I look over to the Special Events section of their website and suddenly I find some cool things I get excited about. In the months ahead there are plans to expand the loft from the two theater cinema to include more theaters. They serve wine and beer....and during special events they are known to serve special event drinks (Brass monkey for the Beastie Boy sing-a-long fundraiser just a few weeks ago). Fun experience, definitely one of the "Tucson" things that I think everyone should try at least once so you can appreciate it. I guess my only issue is the same issue that I have at every theater: The snacks, drinks, etc., seem to be a little over the top in terms of pricing. One bag of gummy worms and a cookie ended up being $7 which, to me, is kind of a lot. I definitely understand that there is a markup (and of course, am perfectly fine with this as it helps keep these gems open!) but at the same time that was a bit of a markup in my opinion. Will definitely be back, but may just make sure to eat before/after so that I don't end up craving a cookie. But for those interested: The lemon poppyseed cookie was vegan, and was actually delicious! read more

One of Tucson's many special places. I do not get here enough, 2018 goals include more movies at the Loft! Such a cozy, local place to catch a flick. No gigantic parking lot to navigate or crowded mall to trudge through to make it to your show. I recommend following them on facebook to help stay in the know on all their free events and special throw back showings. They really do have something for everyone at the Loft. Getting there 15-20 minutes early is recommended as well, there are usually lines to purchase tickets, even if you bought online in advance- you still have to go to the ticket counter. I've seen a film on each of their 3 screens. All of them have their own unique character. The new seats in the main theatre are comfortable and roomie! I LOVE the churro popcorn they sell at concessions. You can use your movie pass here. :) read more

I think what they offer our community is so unique and special that I decided to become a member... and I seldom watch movies, at home or elsewhere! But once or twice a year I see a film (or film panel) here that just blows my socks off. Sometimes that's due to the cinematography, sometimes due to new ideas. I remember seeing films at the Loft circa 1980, at their original location south of UA. I was in grad school, and that was my first exposure to cinema that wasn't mainstream Hollywood. They always do unique showings and have great souvenirs you can pick up. This time around we went to what they call Mondo Monday and saw the movie Evil Toons. Such a funny bad movie. All locals from Tucson must check this place out at least one time in their life! As a transplant to Tucson, I have had the great fortune of watching films at this theater. They cater to all ages, all genres, and all styles. There is something for everyone here! There are some awesome themes and features they host at this theater. Monodo Mondays, First Friday Shorts, and free member screenings, just to new a few. They offer some big name movies, cult classics, as well as foreign films. Each month or so, there are kid Loft films, free for children during a weekend matinee. Now with their remodeled and updated seating in the main theater, it's a place everyone can enjoy! They have 3 screens, so be sure to look at the schedule online or call the box office to see what is playing. Not only do they offer a large variety of movies, but they have a very diverse option of drinks and food sold at their concessions. If you are a Loft member, don't forget to bring your card for ticket discounts and a small bag of their organic popcorn. If you're over the age of 21, you can quench your thirst with beer and wine on tap, or opt for a bottled beer or cider. They offer sodas, waters, juices, and other non-alcoholic beverages. They also sell the classic movie snacks, as well as food and ice cream from some local Tucson restaurants, like Isabella's ice cream and Ethiopian food from Zemams. Only missed five stars because of the facilities. What's great about The Loft is that they treat movies not merely as entertainment, but as art. I love it. And you get audiences that also appreciate art. It is really a fun gig to see a movie at The Loft. Last night, my wife and I saw a documentary on cats in Istanbul. Are you going to see such a thing at Cinemark or AMC? Nope. Or how about their cult classics? Or Oldies but goodies. Or movies in 75mm? Or their sing-a-longs? (West Side Story was a total hoot. The audience members made it fun.) The Loft REALLY has a good thing going. I wish there was a Loft Cinema in every town in USA. The facilities are not modern. Our movie last night was in Theater #3, which is a non-attached, remodeled garage. But Theater #3, a smaller theater, does have stadium seating. Sign up for their mailer--it really gives you the low down on all of the movies that will play there for the month. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Tucson-top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. 2.5 STARS! The Good; I love the unique style of the old school mom and pop theater! The non profit thing does not impress me when you find out the top brass are sometimes paid all the profits! Tax trick? Great snack/ food choices, intelligent quality movies that are now getting so hard to come by! The loft is a fantastic place to see an underrated foreign film. I've been here several times and I always enjoy whatever foreign film we've chosen to see. In addition, I do love that you can get beer, local, beer, local food (burritos from Tumerico, and beautiful chocolates). During Halloween they have marathons of horror films and of course the rocky horror picture show. For a business to stay open for 24 hours to host a movie marathon, it's amazing. This is such a wonderful place. It reminds me of a place back home called Studio 35 which is why i love it all the more. The Loft just makes me feel at home. You won't find any mainstreamers here but what you will find are awesome movies that you never see advertised. Examples are Hello My Name is Doris, Weiner-Dog and Captain Fantastic. These movies alone are enough to love The Loft so much that you want to go every week. They just continually play movies that make you laugh, cry, think, cringe and find joy in. So do yourself a favor, go to The Loft. Order a beer, yep they have beer :), get some popcorn or pizza and enjoy one of the fine movies that they show week after week. So much fun! I have to agree with Corey D's statement that "the Loft is THE best independent cinema in the entire Southwest." We went to the kick-off of the Tucson International Jewish Film Festival at the Loft last night and I was so impressed! Not only was the movie amazing, but the seats were comfortable, the bathrooms were clean, and the concessions were not ridiculously over priced like at the movie theaters I'm used to going to in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. It's a unique joint with a retro feel that you don't find at the Harkins, AMC, or any other chain theater nowaday. They serve beer, pizza, popcorn, candy, cookies, and more... I can only speak to the popcorn which was delicious; and the bottled water was only $2, a steal for a movie theater! I can't wait to return to Tucson to visit the Loft Cinema... for the artsy flicks or perhaps for their Friday night gong night, or both. If you're in T-town, check this place out! read more

What would Tucson be without The Loft? I have frequented The Loft since my undergraduate years. It's a quirky arthouse-esque theater that tends to give space to movies that have a strong WTF factor. It's nothing like your general theater-going experience, where people file in and generally keep quiet whilst watching *boring/dull/irreverent/mind numbing* Hollywood blockbuster "hits." People talk, sometimes loudly. Belly laughs are common. Often, you will find people immediately analyzing the movie, post-film, even before they have left the lobby. One of the first times -- actually, probably the first time -- I visited The Loft was during the Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation, the Sick & Twisted Show. It was on that evening showing that I was introduced to the world of Don Hertzfeldt and his "Rejected Cartoons." If you haven't seen "My Spoon is Too Big" -- well, then you probably haven't begun to have a certain, specific type of hilarious nightmare. Since then, I have been to late night cult film showings. I have attended a couple of sing-a-longs. The First Friday Shorts, held on the first Friday of ever month, are wildly hilarious -- with Max Cannon as the host. Um, yes! Also, The Loft was hip to preference before the Roadhouse opened. Here, you can order beer, wine, pizza, tamales, vegan treats and organic popcorn. Score! Yes, I adore The Loft. A great place to watch cult classics, or just movies that don't hit the mainstream theaters. There is a regular midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show as well. They serve beer, popcorn and various snacks ensuring your visit will be enjoyable. They are currently renovating since its the theaters which will fix the only down side of The Loft. That's funny: John W. drives to San Francisco to see indie and foreign films that will never come to your local multiplex, and I hop on a plane and find myself munching popcorn (with REAL BUTTER) and enjoying a couple of outstanding movies here. For us film-lovers, I guess the grass is always greener ... especially, as John says, if you happen to live in Phoenix. I knew I liked Tucson better, and The Loft is one more reason why. The main theater is a classic big-screen theater from the 60s or 70s. I have yet to see anything in the smaller screening rooms. For some reason, I had thought this was like the Arlington Cinema N Drafthouse in Virginia, which has several local beers on draft and a kitchen. So I was a little disappointed to discover what looked like a conventional concession counter. They do have a couple of beers and ciders on tap, and a selection of bottled brews, but the pizza is by-the-slice from under a hot lamp. It wasn't bad, but still. The pleasant surprises included the popcorn (did I say REAL BUTTER?) and how friendly the staff were. I was very pleased to be able to see some great films, including one from China that I know won't be generally distributed. The Loft is a membership organization; supported by people who love the art of cinema. If I were here more often, I'd definitely join. If YOU live here, and you love the cinema, you should consider playing a supporting role at one of the best cultural institutions in your town. read more

i loved this movie theatre! it was so cool to go to such a unique place to see a movie, and awesome that they have so much to offer at the snack counter. we were able to get both wine AND tamales to enjoy during the movie! they also have movies showing that aren't always in other theatres, so we were able to take a friend to see a movie she really wanted to see here for her birthday. so cool! read more

I know this is a non-profit operation, but I felt I was back at summer camp sitting on the floor and craning my neck. Obviously a two Advil night. Not going to be a regular patron. This place is GREAT! We walked up and one of our fav Food Trucks was outside. We didn't stop cause we're eating healthy, but it's cool, because the Loft has a patio to eat them on! Inside all the employees were theme dressed, and very corteous. The snack bar is VERY limited, which cost them the one star, but they have ginger ale, and beer, and movie nachos! 6 different employees asked if we needed help, while one got our fresh, tasty, popcorn! The seats are comfy, and there are enough fire exits that it almpost seemed like a fire would be fun, seriously, like 8 in one theater. Everything was perfect. This was a Groupon that we had save and the movie, Moonrise Kingdom is worth the trip all by itself, add feeeling like we dropped in a 1950 setting....perfect night! read more

They have indie flics, documentaries, foreign films, along with the classics. The ticket pricing varies, but they do have various discounts available along with the loft membership. The snack bar is fully equipped with draft beer, which takes the movie experience from 10 to 11, no 15, no... to 100. Their main theaters are massive with premium seats. Each chair seems to be labeled with a locals who have donated and it is worth it after sitting in those chairs. If you are into more exclusive movies or premieres, then the Loft is your place in Tucson. Support the arts and cinema! read more

I used to visit the "New" Loft Cinema when it was by the U of A. I saw so many great & weird films. The steps up led you to a dimly lit small alcove where the ticket counter was along w/ the popcorn machine. Great smells, sort of a cross btwn old wood, & burnt popcorn. Restroom was covered by film posters. The movie room was small. Great experience, sadly torn down by the monster which the U of A is, they destroyed most of the businesses in that area & put up bland, parking behemoths. I also migrated to the new location on 3233 E Speedway Blvd. Great area, bounded by a few places to eat, or gulp bad coffee. Bigger screen, plus a mini one upstairs. Brings back the memories, I still go there when I can, has more hipsters visiting now days, back then, I was the only one in the audience. read more

This place has great movies you can't find anywhere else in Tucson. They have film festivals, documentaries, cult classics, foreign movies...a great rotating selection of films. The seats aren't super comfortable, the staff is never really friendly and the popcorn isn't the best. However, all those features give the place some character. And despite those things, I've often gone when movies are sold out or the theatre is packed. They do have tamales, beer, fancy chocolate and local ice cream sandwiches, so that's pretty cool. I love their selection of movies, so I definitely recommend if you're a film buff. Wouldn't recommend if you are picky about customer service! read more

I love the Loft. I love their community outreach and activism. I love that they serve beer and wine. I love that they show classic movies, independent films, foreign films, sing-alongs and so much more. My favorite theater is 2 where you can sit on a sofa and get comfy. It is not handicap accessible though. The main theater just got completely overhauled with new seats and stadium seating. The Loft is a true treasure in Tucson! They sometimes have food trucks outside and tables on their little patio too you can enjoy your beer or food before the show. Unfortunately, their vegan food offered inside sometimes isn't available. Thus the 4 stars. I wish there was some consistency but the popcorn is good and you can get a large beer (who needs dinner!). My last bit of advice is for more popular events like meet the director or film crew is to get tickets beforehand. read more

So around 6 months ago my rental agency gifted us 4 free movie passes, along with a coupon for a popcorn and a couple of drinks. After months of pouring over movies that would suit both my 11 & 3 year old daughters to no avail, we finally found one called Lean on Pete! So I naturally picked out a showtime, packed up the tribe, commuted 30 min, to be informed the free passes were not valid for this singular movie?! The Loft printed up a picture of our free passes with a big ol red X along side an image movies poster plastic displays near the ticket vendor, which he promptly pointed to when I attempted to use the "free passes" Befuddled and on a matter of principle my daughters and I gathered our free popcorn and drinks and left this establishment never to return again! If you offer up free passes they should be valid regardless the revenue the flick is generating. read more

They require proof of vaccination and/or negative test within past 72 hrs AND you have to wear a mask‍. Are you kidding me... we aren't boarding a plane or cruise ship. ABSURD!! We read the fine print on line. Clicked the acknowledgement but didn't see the tiny print after that that mentioned about a vac card. Our cards were at home. Requiring a mask would be more reasonable. I work at two hospitals. I know what is going on‍. Needless to say they would let us in. Just wanted to share this. Went for there dog-friendly, outdoor viewing of Franekweenie and doggie costume contest! I'm so glad they hosted that event, it was so much fun. Titus won a box of treats for participating in the contest (he wore Yoda ears) and got to make lots of new human and doggie friends. The staff was very helpful and patient as everyone tried to handle getting tickets and their very excited pooches. I hope they host more events like this. I would definitely go back! read more

Most recently I drove to Tucson to see the room at the Loft. It was so fun and the atmosphere here is perfect to view a cult classic. I really wanted to like The Loft. When I moved to Tucson it was recommended to me by so many, so I eventually went to see two movies there. The first showing went poorly, but I went back to give The Loft another try. Multiple groups during both movies talking the entire time. I have not had this problem in any other movie theater, and I am not super sensitive to background noise. I'm not sure if it's the clientele, the alcohol, or a management that doesn't know how/care to foster or enforce an enjoyable, talk-free movie consumption environment. Personally I believe that consistently talking through a movie should earn you a lifetime ban on watching movies in the same room as other people, but I seem to be in the minority. Just know you're not alone nor crazy if everyone tells you to love The Loft and you don't! read more

I've recently been coming to the loft more and more frequently the more I found myself with the free time on weekday evenings to indulge in such simple joys of life. That is, the joy of enriching your life with fantastic cinema that doesn't always make it to your traditional wide-screen release. Most people who live in Tucson need no introduction to this beloved non-profit mom&pop local theater, as evident by the fantastic turnout to almost every showing (my subjective opinion every time I've been myself). From advance screenings (shoutout Portrait of a Lady on Fire), to cult classics, to their "Mondo Mondays," to special screenings (Parasite in black and white... still amazing btw). Highly debating becoming a member even though I may not even be in Tucson in half a year, just to show my support. Love this place. read more
