And once again they moved. They are now in the old Eppig location in Vista. The place is relatively the same as when Eppig ran it, but the beer selection is really nice. They had IPA's, the regular Lost Abbey choices, seltzers, and tea's (probably spiked, but not sure). The staff was very friendly, and knowledgeable about their beers. I even got a splash to try the Rye IPA I ended up choosing. I really like the amount of seating they have with indoor and outdoor options which are really important with the good weather we usually have. They do not have food on site, but there can be food trucks depending (usually closer to Dogleg Brewing just over one building). For great service, beer and ambiance, this is the place! read more

This brewery is fantastic! We came here for an event and were super impressed! They had a whole separate back room just for it. It was very organized and well put together. Afterwards we decided to try the beer since we had been curious. The bartender was so nice and gave great recommendations. He let us try several and was so patient. The beers were priced so reasonably too. The main area is also super spacious with games on a table for kids or families. The outside patio was also super cozy. I went to Lost Abbey once when it was in San Marcos and was sad when it closed down. Today, I decided to go to Mother Earth and was pleasantly surprised to find out that Lost Abbey was attached. It's a great two for one spot if you just want a night out with beers. The flagship. The mothership. Where it all began. So, the original location for the Lost Abbey is located in a big warehouse on a sort of nowhere street. Glamorous, it is not. But you're here for the beer and the beer is pretty darn good. Unfortunately, you IPA heads may be a little disappointed. IPA is NOT the dominant beer here, at least with the Lost Abbey portfolio of brews. Their standouts are darker, richer beers: think Belgian. And Judgment Day is simply freaking awesome. But if it's IPA you are after, they also serve a ton of Port Brewing's beers, so that is where you can get your fix. Lost Abbey and Port are both owned by the same company. They've got a large exterior patio and seating inside, too. Loud recorded rock music adds to the vibe. Employees are friendly and they generally have food vendors on-site. Alas, they do not answer their phones and the food vendors aren't listed anywhere online. I really wish they would let everyone know what food is onsite every night. Come on, guys. This is high quality beer and that's why you're here. Lots of free parking everywhere, too. read more

A gem! A true diamond in the rough! I'm typing this on August 8, 2020. We are in the middle of the rolling COVID-19 disaster. All service industry (restaurants, bars, breweries, and wineries) have been forced by new regulations to move outside. Lost Abby has set up a super cool, covered area with about a dozen picnic tables and brought in a tiny (their name is Cochinita Bros) food truck operation to comply with service regulations. The deck is spacious, the beer is cold, and the food helps them keep operating. I've found my new favorite Covid hang out spot! read more

My friend Enrique and I drove to San Diego on a Sunday for a short day trip, to get away from the city. Lost abbey, is combined with pizza port beers, and hop concept. The place is small. I was disappointed in their beer selection though. Most of the lost abbey and pizza port beers that was on tap, I've already had them. And hop concept beers were ipas and hazy IPAs. Don't get me wrong, I like IPAs but I wasn't in the mood for one. We were better off going to stone brewery bistro in Escondido instead. The staffs were nice. I first came to The Lost Abbey years ago when my parents first moved to North County. At the time I was a brand new beer drinker and had never been to a brewery before. We started slowly and tried some of their lighter beers and move on to Amber and seasonal then darker Porter styles. This place is a really great brewery in general and the beers are mindfully made, and it is a great place for new beer drinkers to try exceptional beers and classics. As the years went on we visited this brewery several times and I always enjoyed The atmosphere, their art on the walls, and the different varietals of beers they had to offer. One thing I also enjoy is that every beer has a gorgeous label made that has a very medieval or "dark ages" look to them. I had the honey of bringing my love with me and this has been a fun date night pit stop for us several times. I love the Witches Wit and Avant Guard and he loves the Mongo IPA and Judgement Day. I have to say their IPA's are growing on me as my palette has been developing and becoming more of an experienced craft beer taster. We love The Lost Abby however it did not er the full 5 stars due to these things: ~There is no AC or heater ~limited seating on weekends or busier times ~dogs aren't allowed in ~no complimentary snacks (they have a few snacks but they are $$ expensive and limited) ~inconsistent food trucks being there (last 2 times we went they did not have any food there to buy and we went after a hike and were starving so we didn't stay long) I do have to say that one time we stopped in I had crutches due to a foot injury and before I even got inside one of the employees holding a tasting brought over a chair for me at the bar. Also the staff here is extremely friendly, funny and knowledgeable of craft beers. We are looking forward to the next time we head back over. read more

I love The Lost Abbey. My favorite beer style is Sours, sometimes known as Berliner Weiss. They are few and far between unless you are visiting a brewery which specializes in them. The Lost Abbey has 4 of them. Not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 of them! This made my night and guaranteed I'll be back to try the rest. I've only tried The Framboise De Amorosa so far. This is a barrel-aged raspberry sour. I liked it so much I bought a bottle. Their staff was very warm, welcoming and friendly which just added to my overall positive experience. What can I say I really like this brewery and its close to work / home. They have a vast selection ranging from the lighter wheat's to the triple IPA's and quads. Santa's little helper is one of my favorite seasonal Beers. They have a really good selection so it would please the not so experienced connoisseurs as well The Service has always been excellent and friendly, very helpful staff. The kitty cat that hangs out is really cool too. Even when a bus full of drinking Santa's pulled up the staff just served all 54 of them like it was nothing, that was impressive. 1st craft beer brewery for me at Lost Abbey and it was surprisingly entertaining - especially touring through the warehouse-like brewery that is packed full of fermented brewed barrels! They offer up a good variety of crafted beers to choose from! Their small tasters are just $1 each and the large, generous tasters are for $5 each! What a deal! They have creative names to their beer selections. We ordered up their Hot Rocks, Merry Taj and Judgement Day. I liked the taste of the caramel, cocoa and toffee flavor in my Hot Rocks. It gave it a seasonal, good mix to a crafted beer. All of them, were very enjoyable, to say the least. They offer up stand alone barrels, the bar itself and a flat screen TV displayed right on the center board of the bar. HUMP DAY HAPPY HOUR 5-830p!!! This is definitely the hang out spot on Wed nights until 830p. Very inconspicuous location since it's located in an industrial area. You'll know when you're there when you see a ton of cars in the lot. There were 4 food trucks to accompany your beer tastings and we ended up having Mad Maui BBQ to assist in soaking up the alcohol. There are a couple tables outside for you to enjoy your meal, but I recommend taking it inside so you can eat and drink. You are unable to take your beer out to the lot where the food trucks are located. The Lost Abbey is inside a warehouse with a couple bars inside. You sit on large cement bags on top of barrels - pretty cool! Barrels are used as tables around the warehouse, where there were a lot of patrons standing around. The servers are friendly and generous in providing samples of beers. I ended up having 3 samples before finding the one I enjoyed the most. When I checked into Foursquare, I ended up getting a free 4oz of any beer I chose. NICE!!! What I liked the most about LA is the fact that you're able to sample as many beers in 4oz tasters glasses for $1 each. Should you decide you want a 16oz, it's just several bucks more. We visited The Lost Abbey over the weekend when we were in San Marcos running some errands. I agree that it's a bit tough having no place to sit but I heard it's due to the maximum (ppl) capacity that was mandated by the fire marshall or something. I thought the bartenders were a bit stand offish at first but Matt was the guy that made me feel at ease after talking to him for a bit. He'll warm up to ya after you mention anything Star Wars related :) Tasters are $1.50 or so which is new to me as Ballast Point gives out free tasters to patrons to try out whatever flavor. But the taster size here at Lost Abbey isn't too bad. There was a food truck that day but they only came after 1p when we had to leave. So call ahead and inquire which food truck will be there during your visit and what time they set up. Parking was adequate but it wasn't all that busy when we first arrived. There's no a/c in the tasting room but plenty of large fans. I'd re visit if we were in the area and Matt was working. They also have a tasting room in Encinitas that might be worth a visit as well. read more

Second stop on the Great Northern San Diego Brewery Crawl of 2014. It happened to be kind of empty when my friend and I walked in, which was nice, as it was quite a warm day. We got a bunch of samplers to try (Red Barn Ale, Carnevale, 10 Commandments, Lost & Found Abbey Ale) and sat ourselves at one of the large communal tables. We played some dominoes and other random games they happened to have lying around while we sipped our beers. They had some interesting art on the walls. it was a very chill atmosphere, and I think we enjoyed pretty much all the beers we tried, but I can't say one really leaped out at me. How good is Lost Abbey beer? Does nearly risking my life(ok not really, it was another dude's well-being) prove my devotion? After a recent visit back to San Diego, we brought a growler of Red Barn beer (a Belgian style saison) to enjoy while watching the sunset on the beach. Later in the dark of night, like something out of a horror film, a dark figure of a man approaches us in the night, swinging his arms and screaming. Then he started chasing us. We ran leaving the beer behind. When we outran him and were safe in the parking lot, my only concern was for my sweet precious beer, so I sent Ryan back into crazed meth head/zodiac killer territory to retrieve it. I can happily report both beer and myself are fine. To the point now,if you only have time to visit one brewery in San Diego, visit this one. This is definitely a five star brewery, I only reduced it by a star because basically it is located in the Bermuda Triangle of office parks and even GPS does not help. I recommend rolling down your window and just following your nose to the food truck smell cause it's usually just right outside on weekends. It's not as fancy as Stone (although Lost Abbey is in Stone's old brew house), it's more of a kick back smaller version. They take a laid back approach to brewing their imaginative beers, you should take the same approaching in appreciating their brews. You can basically spend an entire lazy fun day here rotating between sampling brew and eating at the food trucks. If you plan your visit right, be sure to get here when some of the seasonal ales are out. I recommend catching two of my favorites in the late summer and early fall: Witches Wit (summer ale with a mild citrus flavor) and the 10 commandments (10% alcohol content BABY! I forgot what's in it though). The beer is so good you may want to take some with you to get you through the next few days. Bavarian Monk sighting in San Marcos! The Lost Abbey is such an appropriate name because their best beers (well at least my favorites) are their Abbey and Belgian style brews. Sweet, malty, chocolatey and sometimes with a little spice. Port Brewing company beers are also served here and those are lower alcohol content with quite a few variations of Pale Ale. Lost Abbey/Port Brewing Company is in a non-descript warehouse district. Look for the wooden silo/brew tower and walk up the ramp right into their warehouse. It's straight chill in there, with 80-90% dudes and lots of beers on tap, including limited brew seasonals. Everyone is very casual. No fanciful gardens, singing birds, streams or fish and chips like at Stone down the street (Fact: Stone started out in the same space where the Lost Abbey/Port is and then later moved to their larger digs). There are no food offerings inside but sometimes there's a food truck out front. You can buy from there and bring the food in. This is a sampler's paradise, because generous 4 ounce tasters are only $1 each (best deal eva!). Get four or five of those along with a pint of your favorite and you're more than set. You can also buy a reusable growler for $5 and fill that with whatever you want. The growler is 1.9 liters and if you're choosing between the bottled version of your favorite or the growler, you get more for your money with the growler. Some of my faves are the 10 Commandments (sweet, raisiny), Judgement Day (a little less raisiny), Mayan Apocalypse (abbey style with a little cinnamon, chiles and tamarind), Old Viscosity. Lost and Found was okay, but I prefer 10 Commandments and Judgement Day over that. I also tried Red Barn, Mongo, and Witch's Wit, which were okay but didn't stand out to me. Other little things... The womens' bathroom has a door while the men's bathroom has meat factory like vinyl strip curtains for an entrance. There aren't seats, but you can sit on the barrels. Weekdays and nights aren't that packed, but Friday night can get pretty busy (when I went there were about 40 people). There are a couple of TVs running sports highlights. The bartenders are quick at getting you your pours. You can pay with cash or keep an open tab. A must stop on the San Diego beer tour if you're into Belgians or Barrel Aged Beers. read more

I can honestly say, I've never found another place doing a better job in this regard. I won't stop looking though. ;) LOCATION & AMBIANCE (Rating 3.75) This is an industrial complex (Tilt up concrete warehouse) with a large roll up door that serves as the entry to a section of the warehouse used for tastings and a few small tables. To the right are huge vats and their working areas. As stated, go elsewhere if you're looking for beautiful beer gardens, food and service. This is all about the beer. An argument can definitely be made that the ambiance is the industrial aspect. Whatever, get me a beer! SERVICE (Rating 4.25) They are busy, but they had a great attitude and were helpful as much as time allowed them to be. DEAD MAN'S GAME (Rating 6) 14% Alc by Vol: Blend of Bourbon barrel aged and rum barrel aged ales. Holy crap this was amazing! Yes, a 6 star rating. This is only the second time I've ever given 6 stars I think. The flavors are amazing on the front end, mid and back. There is a silky sweetness about this that borders on a desert but doesn't completely go there. SERPENT'S (Rating 5) 13.5% Alc by Volume: Bourbon barrel aged version of "Serpent's Stout (Imperial Stout) While I was not as impressed with this as the Dead Man's Game, it was still amazing and I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

Alex is the man! One of my friends is a local distributor and generously invited me along to sample Port Brewing's liquid product and learn about their brewing/canning process. Like most people who may have not googled Port Brewing and Lost Abbey's relation to each other beforehand, be sure to ask the staff of their story. I find the whole craft brewing industry in Southern California fascinating and really enjoy meeting people who are passionate of their work just by how animated they get speaking about it. Located like most breweries in an industrial area with easy off street parking. They have a numerous amount of selections; amongst them, I tried Board Meeting, Santa's Little Helper, Carnevale, Bat Out of Hell, Deliverance. I'm a huge fan of bourbon barrel brews. Beware, the taster portions are generous! Suggestions for the future: a flight board or labels to mark the tasters. This is quite the spot. Sharing the location with Port Brewing company you can get a whole lotta good beer in this one spot, right from the source. All of the Lost Abbey beers are here, plus they had a vertical Cuvee from 2012-2017 you could do tasters of for $5, that's amazing. I have been seeing a few more places do this, and I really like it. The bartenders were nice and served us when we needed/wanted and left us alone otherwise. The place inside is nice and open, literally just sitting a few feet from the bright tanks. There is no food here but it's all about the beer. With a huge selection and small pours you could easily make a few hours out of going through everything on offer, though you'd get wrecked by the end, it'd be worth it. This is the kind of place I like to go. Tons of selection, all from the source, and two great breweries in one? Yes please. I had no idea what to expect when coming to The Lost Abbey. It is one of those breweries that is hidden in an industrial area and you always feel like you are heading the wrong way but low and behold... you are going the right way. They are brewing in an industrial building and totally rocking the vibe. The Taphouse is in the front of the brewhouse in an open room type atmosphere. Port Brewing shares the same taproom as The Lost Abbey so you actually kill two birds with one stone. There isn't anything fancy going on but they are totally making the best out of most things made out of barrels and doing a great job at it. There is a bar with taps, bar seats and some other tall tops. They have PLENTY of beer to choose from, so you can't go wrong. There are also plenty of bottles to go as well.
