She made the experience really fun and inspired us to keep golfing! Sarah also went above and beyond by noticing my sister was struggling with the heat that day. Unprofessional, irrational, not maintained, overpriced are what come to mind when I think of Lyman's golf course. Tuesday of this week booked the back 9 of the players for 7:10am. Tee time was confirmed and Saturday comes around drove all the way to the course to which I check in at the pro shop. Good to go right? Nope. Pull up to the 10th hole tee box and tee off walking back to the cart the ranger pulls up and starts yelling at us like we are in the wrong. I get it Mr ranger you have the most difficult and highest standard job in the world your more important than even a police officer apparently the way you have to confront someone as if they are breaking a law? Don't know if it's ego or if your just a jerk in general but no need to start yelling at a group that did there due diligence booked a tee time, signed in, told we were good to go, and watched us head up to the back 9. The ranger starts yelling at us that we need to get off the back 9 we are booked for the Jones course for 6:57 all of which was incorrect. We try having a rational conversation to which you need to assert dominance and act like your some kind of a tough guy and want to swing your weight around but you tell us to get off the back 9 we are wrong and we're supposed to be teeing off on a completely different course at a completely different tee time. So we say alright no problem we're going to grab our tee shots and we'll be down. To which you yell at us "I better see you two down on tee box one!" Rude and a bit of a overreaction but whatever. We decide we want to just get a refund to which you start hobbling across the sidewalk from your little hut yelling that we need to get on tee box one. I tell you we're getting a refund. A rational and respectful employee then apologizes to which we appreciated I mentioned the ranger didn't have to be aggressive to which the ranger snaps back at me that he wasn't aggressive and starts talking s**** to other golfers near the ranger hut? Super unprofessional, rude and not worth the time or effort for some guy that's living in his own world maybe take the ego down a couple notches if you wanted to be a cop you should have done that instead of acting like one on a golf course. . If you want to play golf go play at Indian Springs, Portland golf course or even miner hills is better than Lyman's. Lyman's doesn't take care of there rough it's near impossible to find a ball more than 2 feet from you. It's over priced. Unorganized and after today's bad experience which wasn't the first with there staff all I can say is I highly recommend any other course until they actually think about the people paying all this money to play instead of lining there pockets and sitting back. Have some respect for the people giving you a job Mr ranger. I know you think you're the most important person out there but you're not you're just some old dude driving a golf cart with a red flag on it. Lyman's you should really rethink how you run your course because it's the talk among golfers that it's overpriced and overvalued for what people are getting could be a lot better and maybe some staff training on how to talk to people like a reasonably respectable person when your staff is the reason today went so wrong. read more

This course is not worth what they charge. The rough hadn't been cut in 2 weeks +. Crabgrass everywhere including some of the approaches. Very disappointed that they have let this place go. read more

I'm not a golfer, never had been and probably never will be. But I did spend four very pleasant hours here today as I attended a charity event in support of the CT Food Bank and the CT Burns Foundation Children's Burn Camp. Our lunch was served under a big tent in front of the practice tees, so we had a spectacular view of the gorgeous scenery at Lyman Orchards Golf. The buffet lunch was terrific! How does this sound? Penne Marinara, Lyman's Apple Cider Chicken (delicious), Roast Pork Loin, sauteed vegetables, Roast Potatoes, and biscuits. The young army of servers were friendly and efficient, as was the staff in the Grill Room where I sipped a beer before lunch. All in all I had a terrific afternoon with friends, good food and drink, as we all supported two worthy charities. This was an afternoon well spent on many levels. read more

Employees were rude. Course was subpar and crowded. Groups ahead were very slow and showed very little interest in the game. They spent there time with 2 people on the green in the way while 2 others looked in the woods for balls. read more

I just paid $95 for a round of golf at Lyman Orchards. I figured for $95 for a course in Connecticut not named TPC it would be impeccable conditions. The Rough was borderline unplayable, when I mentioned something after the round they said "The weather has been bad, there's nothing we can do". I understand the weather may prevent you from keeping the conditions 100%...that's fine. However, you cannot justify charging $95 for the Player course at Lyman orchards when the conditions aren't up to par, it borderline criminal to charge that much even when the course is in mint condition. read more

We played the 9 hole player's course and it was fun. It was a beautiful fall day and our group had fun. The greens were in good condition and we enjoyed the varied terrain. My only gripe was the carts were gas powered. Most of the courses I have frequented use electric powered carts which don't leave exhaust/fumes in your face when you are behind people. Other than that I loved it and enjoyed going to the apple barrel afterwards to get a pie and donuts. I HIGHLY recommend the egg and sausage sandwich. read more

The golf course itself is Okay, but for $85.00 it should be a lot better, we did like the layout, but some of the greens and fairways were beat up. Worst thing about the course was the terrible slow play of 2 groups ahead of us. We called the rangers and clubhouse many times a rangers only came out once and apologized but did nothing to speed up play it actually got worse. The twosome behind us just left after 12 holes and the foursome ahead of us left after 16. We will NEVER be playing here again and would recommend to stay away also. There are so many other courses at a lower price. read more

Vegetables and fruits were Not Fresh. Pie was mediocre tasting using unhealthy ingredients. The tables over looking the pond had no shades. The fruits and vegetables looked like they were bought from somewhere else and not grown there. I drove around their orchard. Saw a shack for migrant workers! It looked run down from the outside. I can imagine what it must look like inside. I googled Lyman Orchard history to see if they abused their workers! Lo and behold there are several well known newspaper articles documenting systemic discrimination of their women workers, promoting their manager who sexually harassing the women for years, deaf to their complaint, that the Lyman family promoted. Close to 20 women workers quit in protest! Looks like a Shoddy family run business without any regard for good family or human values...this is NOT a farm fresh nice family business! I played & loved the Gary Player course. Sadly I loss my phone there, my bad of course. 15 days later I still don't have my phone. It took them 8 days to find a box & mail it back to me. Be glad I'm not the boss because somebody would have lost a job over be a lazy & inconsiderate employee. 8 days to send it back is just sad. read more

My table has been waiting one and a half hours for our food. The waitress kept telling us that it would take 15 minutes every 15 minutes. Our neighboring table that we talked to, they came at the same time as us, had already ordered seconds. After an hour and forty minutes they gave us chips. Way overrated. Nasty staff too. Get this, we're on the 8th hole with no groups behind or in front of us... so some old miserable idiot ranger comes up and says... "pick it up, your playin to slow". Overall not worth the money compared to the other public courses around. People go here because they think they can hit driver since it's not a champions course which makes play so slow. The conditions aren't great especially considering the prices and how busy the courses always are. I used to play here frequently and had a Junior membership for a year (which is the only good deal you'll get here). The course has great potential but it's run so poorly, if you don't want greens that are never rolled and are loaded with aeration holes, rough that is loaded with clippings, driving ranges that are beat to hell, or consistently slow play no matter what time or day, don't come to Lymans. read more

Rude is an understatement from what I hope was a elder volunteer working the club house and tee times. Can't imagine an employer compensating someone for such condescending hospitality. We arrived at the course to a closed entrance. No sign, no direction- not at bottom of the access road, nor at the closed entrance. We have golfed here for years!!! We have never once known of another entrance. After pulling into every surrounding driveway, maintenance road, apple barrel store, and asking anyone around we figured out our way up to the clubhouse. Patience is part of the game, so we aren't upset necessarily about driving around lost, rather quite offended and embarrassed when we expressed how a simple sign, really 'anywhere' could avoid a ton of confusion for their golfers and unsafe turnarounds in the closed entrance. (4 cars doing same thing as us same timing) I'd prefer to quote him, "no one told me they've had an issue, it's February for god sakes, you have a problem with this? You don't like it then (pauses)" shrugs shoulders and says what's it gonna be! Whoa - whoa. Too much effort to get golf with everyone to tell him to f-himself so we pretended he just didn't say what he did, paid and walked out. Three golfers in the shop which experienced this all, walked up to me the second we walked out of clubhouse and suggested I write a review. Never have - this deserved one. He deserved one. We had our wedding at the Homestead and absolutely loved it! The house is so beautiful, it barely necessitates any decorating. It might be a tad small for most weddings, but it was the perfect size for our 40 person group (could have probably done up to 60), with separate rooms for eating and dancing, and a lovely screened porch and outdoor area for people to mill about. The house and surrounding gardens are clean and well-maintained and in the evening during the wedding the golf and fruit picking crowds had dissipated and we had the place fairly to ourselves. Nancy, who coordinates events at the Homestead, is probably the sweetest lady I have ever met. She showed me around the house over and over again while I decided on the floorplan for my event and gave some great advice. What a pleasure to work with! The Homestead offers a luxurious country feel for a very reasonable price. Highly reccomend! read more

Awesome course played 36 of the 45 holes here and love the layout-! Jason and Dan were extremely helpful in the shop and sold me a pair of shoes and got me the right golf ball for my swing! Lyman Orchards is an overprices course where the pace of play is a huge problem. To make things worse, you can't book online as a single golfer. You can call into the pro-shop and book, but they charge you MORE. You shouldn't be punished for trying to play as a single. IT'S THE ONLY COURSE IN CT WITH THIS PROBLEM. When I called to ask about it, there was no explanation. The price is the price and there's nothing they can do about it. Why they deter singles from playing is beyond me but I'll be taking my money elsewhere from here on out. read more

I'm writing this review because I've played both courses here numerous times and here's how it's gone most everytime. Last week played on a Friday. Took 5.5 hours to do 18 holes. Called the club house on the 6th hole asking if the beverage cart was coming around. He said sure what hole are you on? Sir that would be the 6th green. We were patient and we finally saw the beverage cart on the 18th fairway... Terrible service and went in and complained. Next trip was today. Made it a point to mention last time and was told the course is playing fast and you will be good to go. Well 4 holes in we are backed up 3 groups per hole. I keep patient. Call for beverage cart on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Entire round no beverage cart. Course is pretty nice and well maintained but the play isn't regulated at all and if you want to play a round without wasting your entire day ide say it's not the place to go. For the premium we paid to play I would have thought a little more care would go into having the course play kept up and keeping golfer a hydrated at the very least. Just disappointed. read more

I play the Apple 9 multiple times a week early in the morning. The staff is fantastic and friendly. When I have more time I'll swing up the hill and play the Jones or Players course. The Jones is a good 18 if you want to just grip it and rip it. If you want a little more of a challenge the Players course is the way to go. All and All is a great facility for just hitting at the range or testing your skills on a challenging course like the Players. read more

I had never played this course before, but have heard about it for years and have been wanting to play it for almost as long. Well, I played it last Wednesday and it was well worth the wait! My son and I and two of my golf buddies played the Player course (there are two courses the Player and the Jones, the Player is newer) and while it is a tough course, it is also playable for the beginner or the scratch golfer. My son went 18 in 94 (he's 15)! The scenery is gorgeous, and the best is you can pick an apple to snack on as you play the back 9. Even better is you can pick up an apple pie at the Orchard shop afterwards! read more

With 3 courses to choose from I was surprised to leave here a little disappointed with golfing at Lyman Orchards. I went to the Apple Nine course first, but it just didn't look that appealing. Granted it's a 9 hole course, but Portland West or Miner Hills Golf Course in Middletown are both much more appealing 9 hole courses both a very short distance away. The practice areas at Apple Nine however look great & I'll be back for more on that. Golf is fun, but exercise for me so as tempting as riding in a golf cart is, I resist the urge whenever I can. Some courses require that you use a cart so that ruled out the Gary Player course here at Lyman leaving The Jones Course as my only option. There are more people employed at the various facilities that make up Lyman Orchards than you can shake a club at. There are employees literally everywhere - you just can't get away from them - and as such the courses are meticulously maintained. There is a downside to having too many employees milling around the course and that is that they seem to just get in the way. You'd expect to see a tractor collecting golf balls at a driving range and some even use them as moving targets, but in the way in the middle of a fairway? This is a first for me. I literally followed two commercial mowers for 9 straight holes - they just wouldn't go away! I waited for them and they waited for me the whole way and by the time I got near the end I was wish I brought ear plugs. My only other complaint was the length of the grass in the rough, just off the fairway. The grass was literally just high enough to hide a ball. So unless you were within 4 or 5 feet of where the ball lied you simply couldn't find it. It was frustrating when my ball would drift off into the rough after a long drive only to be lost forever. Come on now, get those mowers off the fairway and into the rough. This place has a lot of potential and maybe I just caught them on a bad day, but there are one heck of a lot of other golf courses in CT that I'll visit before returning here. read more

The Jones course is a nice layout and the speed of play has been acceptable in my 3 rounds. Unfortunately at the current price point conditions are not worth the price. The sand traps are the worst I have played this year, hard, inconsistent and too many rocks, and only one rake no matter how large the trap. Many lies on the fairways the grass was matted down and the ball did not sit up as it should. Greens are average and a bit slow. The staff have been courteous. read more

Booked a tee time for 1:42 for 18 holes with cart for 2 people. We get there only 9 holes open walking only ! We say fine. Then they have no pull carts and we have our cart bags we waited for a hour after our tee time for some pull carts to come back none arrived. So I asked for our money back and explained that I wasn't happy and why . They made no attempt to correct the issue and barely apologized. Very unprofessional they would have to go a long way to correct this issue they need to honor what they sell and a little customer satisfaction go's a long way! Golfers should avoid the Apple 9 course. It's now full of children and other non-players. There are no rangers or starters, so people go off in fivesomes and sixsomes. Yesterday we played behind a sixsome that consisted of two adults and four children, one of whom we guessed was four years old, tops. It took them 22 minutes to play the 9th hole. Oh, and after I signed up for a tee time online, I started getting spam for golf products hours later. read more

I had played the Jones course at Lyman Orchards frequently through the late '80s and usually once annually through the '90's, always looking forward to returning to a great lay-out and pristine conditions. I've since relocated, but was in the area this weekend and played the Jones course today for the first time in probably 6 or 8 years. I was astonished by the deterioration of conditions and obvious cumulative neglect. It's been a tough summer in CT for turf conditions, to be fair, but the Jones course does not get a pass on that basis. Bunkers were awful, green fronts and surrounds were bare dirt, dead fairway turf from heavy rains followed by standing water/heat showed no signs of slice seeding/repair, and cart routing has ruined the rough and hazard margins on many holes. I'm not sure if the word is already out here and I'm just late to the party, but it's clear that expansion (addition of Player course and executive 9) and the pursuit of margins have taken a very unfortunate toll. Maintenance is at the bare minimum level. Really sad to see--this was once a great track. read more

Called today to see if the driving range and practice area were open. The woman stated until 4:00pm. We arived just past 3:30PM and the shop was closed. Stay home! Course rough was ridiculous and way over-priced to walk. I lost 4 ball in the rough...And, I'm talking 3 or 4 yards off from fairway...This is a public course, folks...Not Sawgrass! At $49 to walk, I can save $10+ and 4 balls going to any number of courses nearby including Portland, Timberlin and Hunter -- try those first...And, the older woman at check-in, after waiting 5 minutes at the desk for her to get off a private call, treated me like she was doing me a favor -- never again! read more
