I had an extremely positive experience here, so much so that I immediate turned around and brought in another ailing Mac that I had been using as a coathanger, so this review is really 10 stars. My only regret is that I did not think to bring my machines down to this place earlier because past me would have been much happier. Long story short, we're constantly told to just replace old tech when it goes obsolete with new shiz. And that's what I mindlessly did when my 2014 MacBook Pro crapped out, I walked down to Apple Downtown BK and stood in all of these convoluted pandemic lines and was assured by a genius that I would love the brand new Air. Took it home and lo and behold the six year old Pro outperforms it by miles (I am pretty sure Apple's marketing was successful in confusing and hypnotizing me). I also know that Apple is about to unveil a new line of computers with its own chip imminently starting with the MBP line so it's kinda crazy to buy one now. What I really wanted was my old computer back. MPB workhouse performance without the blasted butterfly keyboards that were in place from 2015-2020 and not two thousand dollars, thankyouverymuch. So my brain ultimately problem-solved this not-very-challenging conundrum and led me down to the Mac Support Store with my dead laptop. From there it was a breeze. They put in a new hard drive and a new battery. So now I basically have a second life on my trusty laptop which has been a great performer in so many other ways. If you have dead machines sitting around in your apartment like me I would bring em on down here. Macs are in super high demand because of the pandemic and you might just bring in a couple bucks on eBay -- or you could be a good egg and donate to a youth. I don't know how this store got such good ratings: I made a reservation, asked about price and time to fix (I needed a new battery) and they told me they needed two days to run "diagnostics." 2 days? I walked into the Apple store and they did it for free in less than 10 minutes! They then sent me emails and texts to check if I was coming in and never responded to my inquiries about price and time. An hour before the appointment they texted me to say it would be $10 more than what Apple was charging and they couldn't tell me how long it would take. I finally watched a YouTube video that showed I could replace it myself in about 8 minutes for half the price. Never going to call this place again EVER. I've read they send "cease and desist" letters to people who wrote negative reviews. I'll post a photo of it when it arrives. read more

One star because I can't leave zero, and another star for the nice man who remotely diagnosed my computer. Otherwise, this place *almost* just took a lot of time and money from me unnecessarily. Please, everyone, do as much research as you can before giving this place your money, and follow your gut instincts. It paid off for me... First, I came to them with a very specific problem I was having on my Mac. I set up an online appointment for a remote session ($20). I had no idea they were going to do an entire diagnostic on my whole computer, but alas. The results came back that I had malware and that that was "likely" causing the issues I was having and that it would be a *minimum* of $288 to fix those issues. Something about this never sat right with me. Why would malware affect only one thing on my Mac and nothing else? (I was having issues using Python, that was all. That was my original issue. Why would malware attack my Python installations?). They told me I'd need to bring my laptop in for several days, that they would have to do a "more complete" diagnostic, that they would have to remove *everything,* do a clean install, and then I would have to load all new versions of all software I've had on my computer for 7 years now. Sounds like good times, right? Instead, I followed my gut and sat on their "results" for several weeks. Last night I downloaded the most highly rated malware detection software for Macs, and guess what? No malware! Then I did additional research into my original issue, and guess what? I found solutions that worked that have literally nothing to do with malware! Turns out all I needed was some motivation, faith in myself, and savvy researching skills, and I solved my own problem for the low price of $0. I can't believe what I almost just subjected myself to :( The issues were from the fact that I installed a newer version of MacOS *after* I installed Python. That was it. That was the solution. I Bought a computer for my mother, it had some one else's info on it, including naked pictures. It never worked right. They fixed it once and it still didn't work right. The told me it would be 600 dollars to fix it and that they won't buy back the lemon computers they sell. Moving forward I will only deal with apple directly. These guys have an impressive operation but it is 100% a rip off. They charged me $30 for a diagnostic and then quoted me $700 to repair my computer, claiming the logic board was fried. I took it to The Rossmann Repair Group in the East Village for a second opinion, and they opened up my computer on the spot, wiped some rust off a connector and it was as good as new. And it was free. Do not go to this place. They will take your money. read more

The Mac Support Store is now my go-to joint for Apple computer maintenance. Lemme tell you why... I've only ever owned Apple computers. I bought my first in 1993. I've never owned a PC. I purchased my first & only laptop in 2008. A 17" MacBook Pro. Apple's biggest & baddest laptop at the time. When I bought this thing it was Apple's top-of-the-line laptop. I'm a graphic artist, cartoonist, illustrator, consumer products designer & filmmaker. I worked this machine hard over the years. This was my primary computer for almost ten years. I maxed out the ram & changed the battery once in that time. I love this machine. It never gave me a problem. Until three months ago. The screen started scrambling & freezing up. In Sept I acquired a big iMac. This became my primary computer. This was just in time. By the end of Sept 2018 my MacBook wouldn't boot up. I figured that it was a goner. But there was a data base on the internal hard drive I wanted to access. I needed to get some service. I first took the machine to Apple. They told me they weren't servicing this model anymore They said they could recover the data but I wouldn't be able to use the machine for work again. I wasn't ready to give up on this laptop yet. I next brought the machine to the Mac Support Store in Gowanus, Brooklyn I've purchased accessories from the Mac Support Store before but never had any maintenance work done by them. I paid $29 for a diagnostic. They got back to me quickly & told me the machine needs a new motherboard. This would cost $500 & change. If they had to do data recovery it would be $700 & change. I did a little research & found that their estimate was reasonable. I gave them the go ahead. Turns out they only had to install a new motherboard. Now data recovery needed. I paid the lower estimate. The machine now runs like new! They are reputable, professional & convenient. They did a quick turnaround ( about a week for diagnostic & repair ). I have no complaints at all. The space they're in is cool. Plus, they're across the street from The Bell House, one of my favorite bars/venues. read more

After Tekserve closed, I was at a loss for a solid Mac repair shop that's not the Apple Store. The Mac Support Store is it. They might be in Brooklyn, but they're work the trip. The location is easy to get to and the interior is Mac style comfortable and inviting. Kind of like Tekserve was in their early years before they became a giant superstore. The Mac Support Store's crew is courteous and they have reasonably priced services with fast turnaround. What a nightmare. I'm not a usual Yelp reviewer but had to express my annoyance with this con job of a business. I have a 2010 MacBook Pro that had a piece of metal stuck in the headphone jack, making it not play sound. I stopped using the Mac a couple years ago but needed to use it recently so I took it here due to its location. I had a bad experience with this place before but I blamed myself for a miscommunication. This time however, was due to undeniable and ludicrously bad service The guy I met up with was aloof and not exactly friendly but that's besides the point. They diagnosed it and gave me several more things to fix, such as a cracked screen, broken keys a failing battery and broken cd drive which totaled to around 800 bucks. I was only concerned with the headphone jack and battery for I had a spare keyboard. So after 8 days of crunching numbers and figuring out what I can live with and without I called and asked them to just fix the headphone jack and install a new battery. They said "ok" and later that day I got a text saying it was ready for pickup. The next day, I picked it up and the same guy showed me the piece of metal he extracted from the jack. So i thought, cool, he fixed it. The 169 was charged. I get home 15 minutes later and go to play a song to test out the sound. Nothing. No sound. It was still registering that there were headphones in so nothing was coming out of the speaker. In fact, i still couldn't put headphones into the jack, the alignment was off. I called immediately to ask what was up and a lady answered. She told me they couldn't fix the jack but there was sound coming through the speaker. After explaining there was no sound coming through she told me to come by. The same guy was there, and he pretended to be confused on why I came back. When I showed him it still wasn't playing sound he took it in the back room and told me that it was playing sound when they tested it. I'm pretty sure this was an obvious lie. After some back and forth, the lady came in and overheard us and said I could get a 50 percent refund. The refund would be for the headphone jack specifically, not the overall repair. AKA the 50 percent refund was for work that was never done but he claimed the extraction of the metal piece was worth 30 bucks. They claimed that when I tried to put the jack back in I deactivated the sound again and implied it was on me, which is the craziest thing I ever heard. I only wish I put up more of a fight in an obvious moment of injustification such as this but I was on break and they were clear they weren't going to budge although they seemed nervous and seemed to agree with me that it was messed up. I was initially happy to discover this store, located not far from my house. However, once I opened the box, the experience was really disappointing. They sold me a power adapter that had prongs that were not designed for use in this country. I discovered this while I was on a train headed out of town on my way to a conference, so you can imagine my frustration. Their suggestion? I go to another store to find a replacement part. Apple is taking care of it in a few days for $200 and also fixing the keyboard plus offered to deliver the computer back to me directly. They were able to assist me w/ getting my damaged MacBook Pro back up & running. My new go-to place for Mac repairs, upgrades and rentals. I was very impressed with the level of service. The staff seemed very engaged and even more knowledgable about Mac system (hardware) diagnostics than your typical Apple Genius. I dropped off my MacBook Pro and iMac systems for repair and learned a lot from the process. My business depends on high-speed Macs for video and graphic-intensive projects, so it was a pleasure to discover the store had affordable rental laptops to use while I waited for the repairs to complete. The iMac was repaired very quickly and the staff guided me through the process of returning my MacBook Pro to Apple directly for repair (due to a known GPU issue). It saved me $700 because they diagnosed the issue correctly. Kudos to Jeff and Miguel for the excellent service and walking me through the whole process with ease. I had heard this place was dodgy. Everybody told me to just go to the Apple store and not to trust these guys. And I tried them for repairs a few yrs back on a different computer and they offered to fix my laptop for twice what I paid for it. But it's the closest place to me and I needed a computer, fast. So I went to the Mac Support Store again ... One star is what they deserve. That's it. And only because I could walk there. (Message to IT pro's: We realize you love your Ticketing Systems. We understand they help you organize your tasks. But please, we don't want to be involved. Keep it in-house. Use it amongst yourselves. Real people don't want them, don't need them, and certainly don't want to use them just to get an answer to a simple question.) Anyway, back to the review: In-person the people at the Mac Support Store are super-nice when you walk in. But once you walk out the door, you are on your own and s#!t out of luck if you have a problem. Even if you bought the Warranty (which turns out is NOT thru them but thru a third-party). They don't return calls or emails. They might answer the phone, but probably not. Those nice people you met in-store (his name is Jeff, and he smiled and shook my hand and wished me luck after I gave him my money) are GONE. They've been replaced by bots from a convoluted ticketing system (errgh!) that leaves you to figure out what it's trying to tell you. And when you try to reach out to Jeff & his team to ask what this message from this bot means, you get a response -- NO, not from Jeff or anyone on his team. That would be too easy. Instead, you get another automated email from the same bot you couldn't decipher in the first place. (they didn't tell me any of the following, I just figured it out on my own) Turns out they use this super-convoluted ticketing system for Customer Service. So when you have a question you have to fill out a questionnaire online. I was hoping for an email reply to the simple question I had. Instead, that online questionnaire you filled out automatically creates an online profile for you on macsupportstore.com (because that's easier than replying to an email or answering the phone?). And now you're locked into the whirlpool and can't get out. (If you have a tech issue, you have to pay $29 just to be able to submit a ticket; they say it's applied to whatever service that needs to be done.) No matter your issue, you don't get an answer from Jeff or anyone at the Mac Support Store. You don't get an email reply telling you the information you needed. Instead, within a couple days you'll get an automated email from that same freaking bot running the ticketing system, telling you there is a "new message on your ticket at your profile at macsupportstore.com" Online profile? I have an online profile at macsupportstore.com? FFS WHY?? All I did was ask a question! I didn't drop anything off to be serviced, I didn't have a complicated, tech-y issue. I just had a simple question. Why can't you just answer my question?? But it's not on the email. There's no information there at all -- NOT EVEN instructions on how to access your online profile or the ticket you didn't know existed. Turns out, if you want to see that answer, you have to go macsupportstore.com (again, they don't tell you any of this, I had to figure it all out on my own), log into your online profile (yet another password YAY!), and your answer is right there. BUT WAIT! THAT'S NOT TRUE. Your answer isn't there. There's no information there at all. The only thing there is your name, and a ticket number. The answer is buried within that Ticket # within your online profile. And if you don't click on that ticket number, you can't find the answer. Again, I need to make it CRYSTAL CLEAR THAT THEY DO NOT TELL YOU ANY OF THIS. If I hadn't been clicking around exasperated and accidentally hovered over the ticket number, I would never have known any of this valuable info I'm telling you now. Further, the "Customer Service" from the Mac Support Store to repeated emails and voicemails demonstrates they don't give a crap whether you figure out this ridiculous ticketing system on your own or not. If they do respond, they'll send you a message -- that's right, WITHIN THE TICKET YOU CAN'T FIND AT THE ONLINE PROFILE YOU DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED AND PROBABLY CAN'T REMEMBER THE PASSWORD FOR. The whole thing is ridiculous. Fooled me twice, shame on me. I hope you folks have better luck. I can only hope the warranty is real. Because this used MacBook Jeff and the Mac Support Store sold me? I brought my slightly over a year old MBP in to have the logic board replaced two weeks ago (thank you AppleCare!). Got it back a week later and it wouldn't stay on. So I dropped it off again last Tues. Then today I received an email saying nothing, like literally, nothing in the body so I called and was told that the logic board needed replacing that's it. "Lemme get this straight. The logic board you put in was bad, and that's why my laptop shuts off randomly and you have to put in another one?" "Yes. We'll let you know when it's ready." He hung up. What kind of customer service is that? I can understand faulty bits, but I can't handle poor customer service. I was the one that had to explain to myself what the issue was, the guy didn't even bother to say sorry about the inconvenience, that the repair had to be repaired, whatever, you know display some customer service. We'll see when I get my freakin MBP back three weeks after I initially dropped it off. read more

I had a scary phone call the other day, where the person on the line was telling me there was a virus on my computer and that it would be shut down immediately if I did not go home and call them with my info from the computer. INSTEAD, I called my nearest Mac repair shop, The Mac Support Store in Brooklyn. Calmly, they said it was most likely a scam (yes). They asked me if I had any pop ups on my screen (yes), would I like to bring it in for diagnostic (yes). They gave me quotes over the phone. An easy location to get to, and with some super helpful and friendly people (the owners quickly recognized that I was one of their kids' elementary teachers), my computer was fixed in a day. It was a little pricey, but my computer was in good hands. You pay for good service and The Mac Support Store is good service and good people. read more

*DO NOT TAKE YOUR MAC HERE FOR SERVICE* I was fully prepared for my experience with this place to be effortless, competent, and satisfying. I wanted to be able to recommend this place to all my Brooklyn Mac user friends who had been forced to otherwise trek into the city for repairs. Instead, I'm forced to warn everyone against making the same mistake I did. If you need a keyboard replaced or have a broken iPod -- and you don't care how long it takes to get it fixed -- this place is perfect. Anything remotely important or urgent should be taken to the Apple store (shudder) or Tekserve at W. 23 St. Here's what happened: I dropped off my iMac with what I was pretty sure was a dead hard drive. No big deal, since I use it all the time and back up my data frequently. I gave Mac Support Store their 1-3 days to diagnose the problem, and then I had to start calling a couple times a day to get them to talk to me about my machine. Emails went unanswered and phone calls yielded "we'll have to get back to you in a couple hours" -- which they never did. When they finally told me what I already knew, they said it was going to take 3-5 days to install a new hard drive and quoted me at $330 for parts and labor. The time would have been fine, had I been remotely confident in their ability to work within their own timeframe. Instead, I made a call to Tekserve. told them what I needed, and they quoted me at $100 LESS than the Mac Support Store. Needless to say, I picked up my machine and took it to the infinitely more efficient and competent Tekserve. read more

I had an issue when resetting my MacBook Air to factory settings. I just needed the hard drive rebooted. Despite telling them exactly what the problem was, they charged $29 for a diagnosis, before telling me that they would keep it overnight. This is a quick fix, they could've done it on the spot. At this point I'd already paid the fee so I left it with them overnight, already kicking myself for not having brought it to the Apple store. The next afternoon I was sent a $100 quote. Confused, I called and asked if there was something wrong with my hard drive. No - they were honestly going to charge me another 100 to reboot my computer that had absolutely no issue - just needed to be reset. The whole situation felt scammy. Not going here again. On another note - the guy working was completely rude from the moment I walked in. No eye contact, 1 word answers, and waved me off to the iPad to check in while I was trying to explain my simple issue. Not cool. read more

These guys have no idea what they're talking about. I'm giving them the benefit of doubt. Either they have a lack of knowledge or they're bilking customers. If you take your MacBook Pro into this place they will tell you you'll void the warranty by opening the case or by trying to upgrade the RAM or HD. This simply is not true. It's against federal law to have such a policy. They're simply trying to get you to spend money with them. It's FUD. They diagnosed my Mac for free, which is great, but then proceeded to present me with a false and rather rudely worded summary stating "warranty voided." Needless to say, that was NOT appreciated. I shoulda read my yelp. Looks like everyone's having trouble with this place. I brought an imac that was overheating and shutting down in here and it's just been a ridiculously slow, overwrought, EXTREMELY unfriendly operation from the word go. The took over a week to tell me what was wrong, offered no phone support and didn't answer my calls for 3 days. Eager to just get my computer home, I shelled over the dough. I brought it home, it's still broken, new problem suddenly--the thing is freezing. Now, to their credit, this isn't necessarily their fault and I'm not suggesting they broke my computer more. It's more their whole way of dealing with it that sucked. I can't prove (and don't think) their actual work was faulty. My current beef with them is that when I got my computer back and $450 later it STILL was messed up and not working, they said they would do a rush diagnostic and have it ready by the end of the day. Nope. 2 days. The diagnosis was faulty RAM. Ok. I thought "I can do that myself and avoid the $60 charge for them to do it, save some more money from flying headlong into this computer" I told them that, they handed over the computer and sent me on my way, without mentioning that it was the *internal* RAM that was the problem and would require all kinds of technical know-how that I don't have. Which would have been *well* worth the extra $50 out of my pocket to pay them. But instead I had to spend 20 minutes online researching it. So. Now. I'm 20 minutes away from this place by car (god help those of you that want to get there by train) and am COMPLETELY uninterested in going through the (EDITED out some unnecessarily mean language here) process of bringing my computer back in to give them any more of my dough. I'm literally going to either drive in to the city (tekserve) or..I don't know, sell this on ebay? UPDATE: Again, to their credit, after an initially really angry (and litigious) message from the shop's owner, he cooled down and apologized for the problems. Since having gotten my computer back, I have discovered that they completely wiped out my Photoshop software, and failed to mention that to me, in fact when I left their store- they told me that they had successfully fixed my computer withOUT deleting anything from my computer. Yeah, I know, support local, buy American, only go to Starbucks for the bathroom, etc. Problem is sometimes corporate's kind of nice. I had to make no less than 4 trips to the Mac Support Store (not super convenient via the G) for the same hardware error. The first time they only noted half my complaint and then blamed me when I returned to explain that they hadn't addressed my primary problem. They charged me $300 for a new hard drive and then, when the root problem continued, explained I'd have to drop more coin to replace faulty RAM. Here's the KICKER: They removed the RAM I installed myself obviously to test if it was faulty, but THEN they never gave it back to me! That's right, they effectively STOLE a component of my computer (albeit allagedly faulty) so that I couldn't even get a second opinion from the REAL Mac store. Adding insult to larceny, they didn't even respond to my requests for the missing RAM to be returned, yet continue to blast me with emails via their list serv. After infuriating encounters with the Mac Support Store (not open on weekends?! or on weekdays before 10?!) I just made a genius bar appointment at the midtown mac store. The woman I met with there sat down with me for an hour and helped me trouble shoot everything, including why exaclty my computer was working slower since taking it in to get serviced. Oh, I see, cause the Mac Support Store stole 250 megs of ram. In all fairness, my computer does work as a basic word processor now, but paying $300 to have a Power Book G4 that at one point was running Final Cut and Adobe Creative Suite reduced to $75 Dell is enough for me to see the bright side of corporate hegemony. At least then there's some accountability. read more

I'm not sure what everyone is twitchy about. They put new life in my desktop, saving me thousands it would cost to purchase a new comparable Mac machine. Everyone thrashing this place needs to understand that Macs simply aren't what they used to be. It's well documented that machines made after 2011 are made to break after a few years. So all you with laptops purchased around that time or shortly after are reaping the seeds sown by the company's change in business strategy. My experience at Mac Support was great. Made an appointment, they ran diagnostics in front of me, and explained my options. I selected the minimum option. It still ran me over $250 dollars, but my 2007 machine now purrs like a kitten. I even waited a few months to make sure the updates and hardware upgrades really took. They did. I'm thrilled. And my bank account iOS smiling back at me with $2,000 extra dollars I thought I was destined to spend. read more

So much potential, but for one; the young guy at the front counter has thee worst attitude (as stated in other reviews). Really short, rude, scrunched face, and passive in a "I'm too sexy for my shirt" kind of way. they have the same two diagnosis logic board, mother board. I had one laptop fixed here twice and got duplicate diagnosis after having just replacing my logic board.....THERE ...so I'd say they're a bit scammy. I was thrilled that there was Mac Support in Brooklyn however I'm sorry to say Brooklynites - you're better off just trekking into the city for your Mac Repairs. These guys were are fine in person but if you get them on the phone or try to communicate by email - forget it. They're slow to get back (if they do indeed email you back) and they almost never answer the phone. Customer service is black hole. My computer got repaired but it was about 15 % more than the competition charges. I gave them 2 stars because the repair was indeed successful - however they were not a pleasure to deal, nor were they a good deal cost wise and I certainly won't be returning to them for future repairs. read more

I brought my iBook to this store to estimate repair. It was kind of old. They gave me an estimate for about $350. I hesitated, then went ahead with the repairs. When I got it back, the CD drive still wasn't working, and they wanted an extra $300. I said it didn't work before the repair (I knew, I wasn't able to watch DVDs), they said it was, and that it happened after the repair. Would not negotiate anything. Disputed bill, they transfered it to a debt recoverer who's been harassing me for 2 years, despite the fact that I've sent them the record from Better Business Bureau who tried to negotiate (they didn't bother to respond). My story is very similar to a number of other reviews on this site. I also thought it was cute to have a Brooklyn based Mac service. I've reported them to Mac, hope they do something about it being approved by Mac. read more

They charged me around $80 to dunk my laptop in a bath and tell me it couldn't be saved. Ended up going to Macbook Repair NYC (37th and 8th) who told me whatever they did corrupted my data, too. Their location is cute but the people working there don't really seem to know much, and I dealt with a few different people which was frustrating, having to explain my situation every time. read more

The guy was nice but I paid money for them to tell me what was wrong with my iPhone and then they were gonna charge me more money to reset my phone. Meanwhile I went to Apple and they gave said it was a software update and gave me a phone. I'd say just stick with Apple probably better off. They charged me for something and they couldn't tell me what was wrong with my phone. read more

This is a late review since I got my old Mac Pro repaired like two years ago. I am only doing this now because someone asked for a recommendation and I came on Yelp to find it. My Mac Pro was not serviceable by Apple anymore when I brought it in and the certified apple stores won't touch it since the parts are no longer under warranty. So I came here to hope get another year out of it by replacing the battery. But I got two heads out of it and it is still kicking!!! Definitely recommend this place! The set up is also super chilled so waiting around the place is nice not so sterile like most repair shops. read more

FREE E-WASTE RECYCLING! Haven't had to buy anything or use their services, but offering recycling is a HUGE community service in my book and alone worth 5 stars. Bring in your old computers, cables, hard drives, etc. If you have TVs or appliances, you'll have to go to the Lower East Side Ecology Center (located in BK, despite the name): 469 President Street (at Nevins). read more

My guess is that the first reviews given here on YELP are shills, friends or acquaintances of the folk at The Mac Support Store. Anyone who suggests that these folks are on par with Tech-Serve are so far off the track. These folks are rank amateurs, and the people at APPLE, INC should know exactly what kinds of operations they are giving their "authorization" to. This place does not deserve to be flying under Apple's authorization, PERIOD! Too bad, as we Brooklynites surely want and need a place where we can go to with a reasonable degree of expectation that we can get decent service without having to schlep into Manhattan. Well, good news is that BKLYN will be getting an Apple store all its own, and the Mac Support Store will slip into obscurity, where they rightfully belong. Location is so-so, for public transportation iffy at best especially if you're carrying something of weight. If you're driving, better have commercial plates or you'll get ticketed in a heartbeat, and even with the commercial plates, g'luck finding a spot on a weekday. Be prepared to schlep your goods up a relatively steep flight of stairs, and unless they've marked the way with a bit more clarity, be prepared to take a step into the garden at the Overlook Hotel (remember The Shining). Lackluster reception I can deal with, poor communication and follow-through on their part I cannot. NOT recommended. Take the advice of the most recent reviewers. Stay AWAY. read more
