We took our biracial, 3 year old son to Main Switch for his very first haircut and we couldn't have been happier with our experience. Sonia immediately made all of us feel comfortable, like we had been going there for years. She was social and made a number of connections back to us, which made us feel like part of the family. She was calm and patient and kind to our son, who was definitely nervous, but made the experience so much easier for him. Not only was his cut phenomenal, but she washed and styled his curls when he was done, which left him looking like such a big, handsome boy. The pricing was totally fair and scheduling was simple. 24 years ago I met Sonia , the owner of Main Switch . At the time I was 16 and living in a residential facility for Children in DCF care . She had volunteered thru one of our staff to help do the young ladies hair. Being biracial , I hadnt been educated on the way to care for my type of hair and Sonia educated and helped me learn. Coming from a child who had been abused and battled with low self confidence and self love this was huge for me.From that point on Sonia became so much more than a hair stylist . On a good day, when left to my own devices, my hair is a tangled, damaged mess. Sonia took on what I thought was an impossible task, and she actually made my hair look good so that I didn't humiliate myself at my cousin's wedding last June (2021). Even though I live a couple of hours away, I manage to get myself to Sonia's salon about every 6 weeks so she can twist my hair. I go to her Norwalk location more often since it's a little closer, but I've been to her location in Middletown as well and they're both nice. I like the idea of supporting local business and I like the idea of a of a salon that cuts all types of hair. But, they don't, especially mine. Google knows, so how could Sonia not? THINNING SCISSORS + CURLY HAIR = DISASTER. I heard the sound in disbelief, but it was already too late. It's in a two inch pony tail now and it's all I can bare to look at. It will take more than 12 MONTHS for my thick curly shoulder length hair to grow back. I specifically said do not cut the length. Sonia hacked into it near the roots with thinning scissors leaving it a frizzy, stringy mess and then made some excuse about the last stylist and cut it into a bob. The sides aren't even and there was an uncut 3" chunk of hair on the bottom I had to cut myself! Rude, arrogant and the absolute worst haircut I have ever had. read more

The owner is extremely attentive to detail and makes sure that all her customers are extremely satisfied! The staff is very good at styling, I have been going there every month for color and style. I have been coming to the Main Switch for over 10 years and this is definitely one of the best salons I've ever been to. Throughout my many styles of relaxed, to a low pixie cut, grown back out and colored and now natural, the stylists here have been able to keep up with it all. The service is always extremely friendly and efficient. This is not a salon where you're going to spend your entire day waiting around. I went in today (a Saturday nonetheless) for a 2pm appointment, was immediately taken to the wash area and was out the door before 3:30pm. The salon also specializes in many textures including bi-racial and straight. This is definitely the only salon where I've seen a variety of ethnicities coming to trust the stylists with their hair which is very energizing to see. Since this is a Paul Mitchell focused salon there are always a variety of high quality products and styling tools for sale as well. This place is a gem! I looked all over the Internet for a place to go to get a relaxer, a deep condition and nice protective style for my hair. And everyone else looks sketchy as can be. Also we all know what it's like going to a new salon and not wanting to feel unwelcome. But at this place you're greeted right as you get into the door. It's so clean and comfortable in there. The atmosphere is great here. They have different areas for getting your hair washed getting it styled getting it dry they also offer a lot of other services that I didn't partake in but was very interested for the next. And the owner even made a point to introduce herself to me and was very friendly. Now for the last eight years I've been going to salons that are only run by one person which means I'm usually the only client in there so going from that to this was a real smooth transition.
