One of the most overused phrases I have yet to use is "best kept secret." However, it fits the evolution of The Maine House. Bao & Beyond, one of the best Bao trucks, has found a brick and mortar home here, and their delectable menu has expanded! For now they serve midweekdays but hopefully it will expand. The buns are still outrageous, the fried chicken dishes flavorful, and the bulgogi bouncing with lettuce wrap platters. While cocktails are still highly creative and sought after, the beer selection is somewhat lackluster. Inside you will find a perfect comfy winter hideaway with friends and friendly service.

This is our absolute favorite place to go for a cocktail and an app. The cocktails are not only delicious but also whimsical and so creative. Leah is a true mixologist!! This is the "BlackBerry Blook" and the AMAZING "Blaubeere Streusel (which has a streusel crumb rim which tastes like a snickerdoodle cookie)!" Also pictured, "The Snowflake Martini," a new favorite! Simply put, we have yet to find any cocktail in New England that compares to The Maine House cocktails. You won't be disappointed!

Updating this review to say that the Maine House's Wednesday night food series is tha bomb! This week featured Peruvian cuisine. Chef Kirk's ceviche intrigued and delighted our taste buds. The scallops were soooo fresh... this was hands down the best ceviche I'd EVER had. The duck confit captured my fiance's attention (I made sure he got the last bite). And of course, Leah's amazing cocktails paired fantastically with our meal. Bravo to all! We'll be back soon.... xoxoxo

Pinterest worthy center pieces, Dave Matthews Band playing in the background, and a huge selection of craft cocktails. Need I day more?

The Maine House is a fairly new location in Historic Old Hallowell Maine. DD the owner/proprietor has created an ever changing menu of fresh local and seasonal food creations using local Maine seafood and produce. Light lunch, and snack faire as well as Tapas and small plate options in the afternoon and evenings. Come for the homemade infused vodkas or the specialty cocktails. We enjoyed the Dirty Pickle Martini and the Drick's Cucumber. Today we are having lobster claw bloody Marys. Yum!

By far one of the best cocktail bars in Maine. The owner Leah is a master at blending flavors and ingredients into something divine.

Tends to be over crowded and really loud. Food and drinks are good but the environment is overwhelming.

Time for a little update!…read more It's been a hot minute since we've been back to visit -- four years, actually -- and the fact that this gem still exists says something! This time we brought the whole family for dinner. I'd recommend reservations on weekends since it was packed, but we got seated right away because we planned ahead. Our waitress was top-notch -- high energy, charming, attentive. I'd give her 6 stars if I could! She read our crew well and adapted to each individual at the table -- a skill that clearly came from experience, and it served her (and us) well. Everything we had was great: cocktails, appetizers, dinner -- not a bad thing on the table. But the standouts for me were the Buffalo Cauliflower and the Spicy Shrimp Shio Ramen. For drinks, the seasonal Crazy (whiskey, Amaro Montenegro, beet, cayenne, lemon, egg white) and the Veruca Salt (tequila, coconut, avocado, pineapple, lime) were both incredible. I loved them so much I'm making a special trip back to town during my stay just to have them again ;) Bravo, State Lunch! You've got a fan for life. Book that reservation -- you won't be disappointed.

My friend joked that there was one hot plate making everything - and she may not have been wrong. The best part for me was the art in the bathrooms.

We were seated promptly and our drink orders went right in while we looked at the menu. I had never been here before, we asked what the server recommends. She was spot on. We started with a round of pulled pork nachos for the table. I went with shrimp tacos (aioli on the side as I was worried about spice level). Others at the table had the Reuben, chicken tacos, and house chili. Our drinks came out fast, the food was not far behind, our eyes were met with generous portions nicely garnished. The pulled pork nachos were exactly what we expected southerwestern-y cumin-y deliciousness assisted by sour cream, and fresh salsa goodness everything was perfectly seasoned. My shrimp tacos came with lime, avocado, and purple cabbage with spicy aioli on the side. The meaty shrimp with the crisp cabbage were all mellowed together by the creamy avocado. I would eat them for days. Everyone in my party cleaned their plates! The atmosphere is country-chic. There is a saloon decor vibe but it's also hipster steam punk meets old west. The main dining area is clean, spacious and was decorated for the holiday. By the time we left the dining room was a little over half capacity with folks peppered around the bar. It wasn't too noisy, there is country music in the background, but it was fine for conversation. The overall vibe is fun, light, and hospitable, plus there was a pinch of yule-time joy in the air. There is a front and rear entrance, parking is on the street. Around the back of downtown are assorted free parking lots there is also a free parking garage nearby as well, so parking is not a problem. Downtown Augusta is always dolled up this time of year with twinkling lights, snowmen, and such. I recommend The Whiskey Kitchen. Whether you need a space for a working lunch - there is Wi-Fi- looking for a special gathering for an occasion make The Whiskey Kitchen your destination!
