Wow. Come on in and take a gander at their EXTENSIVE and hilariously worded cocktail menu. There is so much! The bar is STACKED full of everything you could want, and all the fancies to go inside and on top. Artistic and magnificent! Tonight we had wonderful live music by a band called Trio Con Brio, and they were playing a Grateful Dead song when we were heading out. It was very busy. Lots of delicious little plates of food coming over from next door at the Liberal Cup. My chocolate martini, called the "I NEED CHOCOLATE NOW" was strrrooonggggg. But omg so tasty! Yum. I'm not a regular drinker at all, but I was the first one to finish my drink. Oops. They asked if I wanted a second one. I probably wouldn't have been able to find the front door if I did. Haha. The atmosphere in here is so sweet, pine boughs, ambient lighting, floating candles (think Hogwarts!), exposed beams. Lovely. Very sweet. read more

One of the most overused phrases I have yet to use is "best kept secret." However, it fits the evolution of The Maine House. Bao & Beyond, one of the best Bao trucks, has found a brick and mortar home here, and their delectable menu has expanded! For now they serve midweekdays but hopefully it will expand. The buns are still outrageous, the fried chicken dishes flavorful, and the bulgogi bouncing with lettuce wrap platters. While cocktails are still highly creative and sought after, the beer selection is somewhat lackluster. Updating this review to say that the Maine House's Wednesday night food series is tha bomb! This week featured Peruvian cuisine. Chef Kirk's ceviche intrigued and delighted our taste buds. The scallops were soooo fresh... this was hands down the best ceviche I'd EVER had. The duck confit captured my fiance's attention (I made sure he got the last bite). Came in for oyster night. The bar was NOT busy. The wait staff were no where in sight. I sat with my party and it took a good twenty minutes for the waitress to even acknowledge I had joined the group. Two patrons came in after me and sat at the bar and were immediately served and offered oysters. I was NOT pleased with the wait, and the waitress's apparent lack of awareness that I was even there. The place is small it's was not crowded. This long wait and lack of good customer service was a turn off and I won't be back anytime soon. read more

DD the owner/proprietor has created an ever changing menu of fresh local and seasonal food creations using local Maine seafood and produce. Light lunch,and snack faire as well as Tapas and small plate options in the afternoon and evenings. Come for the homemade infused vodkas or the specialty cocktails. This is obviously the best place for drinks, and maybe food too, in Hallowell. But it's small, so I kinda don't want more people to come here, because then I'll have trouble getting a table... The drink menu is 4 pages long, and every one I've had so far is interesting and carefully crafted; the entire first page are made with Maine-distilled liquors. The waitresses are super pleasant. Their menu is limited, generally with just small plates, but affordable and delicious, and it's my favorite light meal in Hallowell. They have special menus throughout the week that are really fun; dumpling night recently (who knew the Russians had dumplings?) was delicious. The capitol area needs more places like this. read more

This is such an amazing place for a drink! My husband and I went to the Maine House on Saturday evening for a nice drink. We were not disappointed. Each hand crafted cocktail has at least one ingredient made in Maine. That being said, each drink on the menu was as unique as the personality of each person in the bar. While it is small, you see people just getting off of long work day, people in their early 20s socializing, couples on dates, and locals who are their for the live entertainment. You might assume that live entertainment in a small bar would be annoying, or too loud. You would be wrong in this instance. You could still have a conversation and enjoy the music. We landed at the Maine House after being quoted 30+ minutes for a table next door on a Saturday night. I had read about the place but had forgotten about it so I was excited to try it and that we could be immediately seated. We were seated at a high top near the window - there appears to be limited seating but there was also live music that night so it could have been that tables were moved to accommodate. The draft list was very impressive with Maine beer offerings from Banded Horn, Oxbow, Maine Beer Co. and Peak Organic (to name a few) and the cocktail list was outstanding. We ordered some plates to share... the wings, a BLT dip and the caprese salad. Everything was tasty and service was excellent. My mom had a cocktail that was delicious (some chocolatey concoction) and my dad and I were happy with our new-to-us beer choices. As a new local, i have had the pleasure of frequenting all of Hallowell's hot spots. The Maine House is at the top of my list. The menu is the perfect size for this cozy atmosphere and their lobster roll is one of the best in Maine. Not only are the cocktails unique and beautiful, the beer on tap offers local, seasonal varieties. Although the food and drinks are enough to keep us coming back, the ambience created by this special mother/daughter team make it a home away from home for us. Local ingredients, small batch custom infusions made on sight, and inviting music are some of the things that keep me coming back for more. Really nice place for a light meal and excellent drinks! We converged on this tiny establishment with 25 close friends (we let them know we were coming well in advance, of course). They welcomed us with a smile and open arms! The menu is small but delicious, and the drinks were creative and incredible - especially when they included the house-made vodka infusions. I want to start by saying I went to this place once about six months ago. Since then I have herd that there is new management and I support small town local business so I will give it another try and hopefully be able to give a better review. The atmosphere looks very nice and clean. When I got there the place was empty it was late afternoon. It looked like the employees had just arrived because nothing was ready and I mean nothing. We couldn't even look at a menu because... Well I don't know why? I think they had to write it down on a board on the wall?? No joke they really had to do that. But for some other reason they couldn't tell us what they were going to write either. So we ordered a beer and waited for the wall writing to begin. Problem was we were waiting for the beer too. Did I mention we were the only customers? So no beer, no menu no problem. I went to another locally owned place just down the street. Again, new ownership or management not sure. We were wandering Hallowell late this afternoon and not being in the mood for the noise of nearby hotspots we decided to have a drink at this new place. We got pleasant, quick service at the bar where we learned that the food is locally sourced and prepared to order. We had nachos, crab cakes and the hunnus plate, all excellent. While we were there a couple of musicians were auditioning for evening entertainment and they too were wonderful. Don't come here if you want a lively noisy place but if you want a low key with good food, drinks and entertainment this should go on your list.
