Came for live music this afternoon after the Art Walk, but after signing in and going on the waitlist, the music packed up and left. Bummer we missed it! It was hot and muggy outside but we would've tolerated that for some live music - had we arrived an hour earlier. So we decided to sit inside. The AC was on full strength! So that was refreshing. I was a little chilly by the end of my meal, with goosebumps. But no complaints, like I said, it was muggy outside. I'll take the cool when I can get it! The waitress staff were BUSY today! Carefully marching around platters of many drinks in glasses, navigating foot traffic, small children nearly feral, some heavy doors, and a flight of stairs to the various levels of patio. We sat in their outside Patio when music was playing. Beautiful night, plenty of Beer selections, service was very good and their service was excellent. They also brought a water bowl for our Golden. You have to check in inside if you want to sit at a table and you have to order drinks from the bar too! Wait time wasn't long and before we knew we had a table. I tried their fish n chips and the fish was very good, didn't care for the fries they were soft and not crunchy. My husband had the Lobster Roll with a side of fries. 2.5 stars, but I'll be generous and round it up to 3. We have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. We found an opportunity to recently and, unfortunately, everything was just okay. Customer service is #1 for me. If your customer service is great, the experience is great. While the establishment was a bit busy, it wasn't that busy. There were plenty of employees just standing around talking to each other. We waited at the entrance to be seated for quite a while. A simple acknowledgment goes a long way and they kept walking past us as if we weren't there. Eventually someone came over and gave us a seat. It's a nice enough area. The outside seating is clean and relaxing. The chairs being metal could have used some kind of cushioning, but not a deal breaker. We ordered a burger with poutine fries and a pizza. Both came out very fast. And, like everything else, they were just okay. Leaning more towards not great. The poutine wasn't worth the price, as the gravy looked and tasted like it had sat for a while. The burger was really flavorless. The pizza was decent, but still nothing worth going to for. Unfortunately, this wasn't worth the trip. Everything looks nice, but that's as far as it goes. The customer service could really use some more training and the food needs a hand to be better than it was. Nothing was bad, per se, more disappointing and not worth the time. If this establishment put as much work into their customer service and food as they do for the appearance, they have the potential to be something really great. A great beer menu for lovers of all things craft beer. Very friendly bartender at lunch time and she knew the food items and beer list, always nice to see. I had the fish tacos and I was not a fan. I love fish tacos but this piece of fish was more like an unseasoned slab of fish on a taco. French fries and with the aioli were really good. Went to The Quarry Taproom for the first time and was very satisfied. Went on a Tuesday night so it was not very busy. Got seated right off, waitress was very friendly. I met up with old friends here for lunch 2 weeks ago. Seating was limited to the front room and the choices were in the middle of dining room or under the TV, neither ideal. We all decided to order the "baby" kale salad. Buyer beware the kale was not baby, but the tough adult variety and the brussel sprouts were barely roasted and very hard. Two of us ended up taking the salads home to further cook so we could actually eat them. We had great service from our waitress, Liz! Although the service was great, the food was just ok. None of it was bad, but none of it made us want to go back. The fish in the fish and chips was not flavorful and the breading fell off almost every bit. It seemed a bit wet, which is never a good adjective for fried food. The fries were ok, nothing special. The poutine was pleasant, but seemed to be made with a chicken or turkey gravy rather than a more flavorful gravy, like beef, as is traditional. Some of the cheese curds were melted, but unfortunately most were not. The scallions were a nice touch though. The ribeye cheese shell tacos were not great. There was too much going on flavor wise, and the ribeye was quite gristly and was cooked rare (without checking with us on how we wanted it cooked). However, the sweet potato fries were good! The bathrooms also seemed like they were overdue for a thorough deep cleaning and a fresh coat of paint, but were ok otherwise. Our takeaway: if you go, get the sweet potato fries! read more

Sometimes things just work out. I was traveling back from Nova Scotia and found this great place on the coolest street in Hallowell, Maine. The tap room is all about local beer and fresh food. The staff is friendly and helpful. I started with three oysters (was too hungry to remember to take a picture!) and they were fantastic. The homemade cocktail sauce was killer. I ate what was left because it was so good. Then I had the seared ahi tuna served over seaweed salad. It was perfectly done and a great size portion. I went with the blackened fish tacos which were haddock. They were tasty and well cooked but lacked the spice I expected. Maybe that could be a side for those who want the spice. I had a couple of the local beers and finished with an old fashion. My Dad got the French onion soup which looked amazing! I was jealous. Great place with entertainment and style. I have been to The Taproom a few times over the years, with every time better than the last, and I've finally decided to write a review after an encounter with a talented and persuasive bartender. I was psyched recently because their draft list, which has something like 30 taps (I love that it's mostly Maine beer!) added cider options from Absolem, a cidery just down the road in Winthrop. Very cool. It's been fun watching the menu evolve- I still love the kale salad, but my latest favorite is the seared ahi tuna salad, which was cooked perfectly. They have all kinds of great stuff on the menu- the haddock bites were also a winner :-) One thing that's always been awesome is that the staff is a great bunch of people working together to help people have good times in Central Maine. Which reminds me (good times!) that there could be music on almost any night of the week, which is pretty wicked. And in the summer you can appreciate it outside on the patio. Win. If you ask me what I remember most about The Quarry, it's the friendly people. We were warmly greeted at the door, at the bar and by other frequent patrons. I don't know if this is a true "neighborhood bar" but it sure had that feeling. One of the things we wanted to try on our visit to Maine was poutine. Food: I got a hard cider and the Mac n cheese. The cider tasted ok but was served room temperature at best slightly warm at worst, and was completely flat. I'm not sure if they were having technical difficulties or if the bartender some how messed it up by serving an old one but that was not a good way to start the meal. The mac n cheese was also below par. It is served with chopped up bacon and scallions. The toppings were good but few and far between. Unfortunately the problem was with the cheese sauce. It was so flavorless despite there being tons of cheese dripping from my fork on every bite. The cheese was so flavorless that unless I happened to get one of the few bits of bacon or scallion the dish tasted like plain sauce less noodles. If someone cooked a box of store bought pasta, strained it, and then served a plate of dry sauce less noodles it would be pretty similar to this dish. I also tried a bit of their Buffalo dip. It tastes like they shredded chicken and then mixed it with taco seasoning. It tasted ok but it wasn't "Buffalo" or spicy in anyway. The food was edible but not tasty. It's unfortunate because they had a couple other things in the menu that sounded good but now I doubt that I ever want to go back here. Service: The waitress was nice and stopped by several times to check on my table. Ambience: This was a small bar with a few tables for larger groups. The chairs were comfortable and my group of four was lucky enough to be seated at a six top so we had plenty of room. read more
