Long story short, I've been following the Maker Hotel on Instagram for quite a while and finally visited Valentine's weekend! I didn't stay at the hotel because it is pretty pricey, but I visited their Lounge after getting dinner in town. Didn't have a reservation so getting into the restaurant bar was impossible but they told us we could walk around the corner to their lounge. Upon entering the lounge, we were greeted immediately and told that there was no available seating due to full reservations yet half the bar and a few of the lounge tables were empty. The guy said he would take our names and that it could be up to an hour wait so we did that and stood there. After nearly 45 minutes and those empty bar seats + lounge yankee still not being filled, he offered us a half of a couch next to another couple. We would've sat next to them sooner if only he let us! Aside from that, service was fast and drinks were good. The menu included signature cocktails that paired with the Maker's signature fragrances. I tried the Rebel which was pretty good. We ordered some bites -- the beef tartare with onion rings and a side of fries. I love a beef tartare which is so rare to find as many places offer Tuna. I wish I lived closer to this place, because I would make this my go to spot for enjoying an aperitif or a night cap! The main thing I loved about this place was the setting. Picture super high ceilings and a dark but cozy space. I also loved my drink (the Dream cocktail) which was a perfect drink for autumn. My friend got the Naked cocktail which I personally didn't like (I'm not a fan of gin), but wow was the presentation of the cocktail incredible. Our server was friendly as well and gave us some nice suggestions for the drinks. We also walked through the hotel to its main entrance so that was nice seeing the way it was decorated. read more

The Maker Lounge is a one-of-a-kind experience. The drinks are fantastic, and the perfumes smell amazing--there are even signature cocktails inspired by each scent. The servers are so kind and give great drink recommendations. It was such a treat to sample the perfumes and see how they smelled on me before purchasing. If I could give 6 stars I would. We had a pretty grim experience with a neighboring restaurant where we left without waiting for our food. The Maker Lounge accommodated us. They didn't have our first choice of wine, but we settled on a lovely bottle + excellent food. The bar tender Simon was amazingly accommodating us. We explained to him our grim experience next door, where we were forced to buy a warm/hot (read "undrinkable") bottle of expensive white wine, and were shoved near the service area of an empty restaurant. In the Maker Lounge we had a fab meal. When it came time for the bill Yvonna comped us one meal because of our bad experience next door! When we explained it wasn't with the Maker, she said she didn't want us to have a bad experience in Hudson, and she also apologized for not having our first choice of wine. We went here with a group of girls for cocktails after dinner nearby. The lounge looks like a speakeasy and the cocktails were great! They have a lot of fragrant drinks with well thought out ingredients. They also let us smell their fragrances which paired with the drinks. Cocktails so well made that we ended both evenings in town here. Every one was expertly made with the best ingredients and by wonderful and highly knowledgeable mixologists. Ambiance was beautiful! As another reviewer said, they must have spent a fortune on the design and renovation. While some other reviewers have complained about the "high prices", I found them reasonable for what you got. Many of the ingredients had to be custom made ahead of time in small batches, which takes time and effort. As will much else in this town, the prices were similar to what you'd find in large cities, but unlike much of the overpriced and under-delivered food found in Hudson, these cocktails were appropriately priced for the great ris delivered. Ah, a bit of a letdown but am I surprised? The Maker and all of its venues tend to be three things: beautiful but offensively overpriced for what you're getting. I will say, the cocktails here were generally delicious, but they were inconsistent. The food was unfortunately underwhelming (I have heard this about the Maker Restaurant as well, which is why I probably will never dine there). We had a net positive experience here overall , but at the end of the day, if I'm being honest with myself, I probably just went here so I could add another review to my list. We came here at around 8 on a Friday night. The place was pretty empty, so we got us two seats at the bar. The interior itself is gorgeous, clearly meticulously designed. Aesthetically, the Maker is a stunning enterprise. It's interesting, many of the bad reviews here are about rude staff, which was not our experience. The good reviews talk about excellent product, which was also not our experience. For starters, it seemed like bartender, while super nice and friendly, did not really know what he was doing back there. For our first round, we started with the Naked (Plymouth Gin, Chareau, Tangerine Cordial, Pink Peppercorn, Carrot) and the Libertine (Fernet, LN Mattei Cap Corse Blanc, Dried Hibiscus & Rose, Rosewater, Lemon). The Naked was actually a martini variation, which you would not guess at all from reading the menu. It's a good thing I like martinis because I was expecting a shaken, savory-sour type drink. The drink itself was creative, as the tangerine cordial and peppercorn/carrot elements actually showed up in a layered ice cube situation. So it seemed the drink's only ingredients were just the gin and aloe liqueur. I was told to sip it slowly, as the drink's flavor profile would change subtly as I went along, but the execution didn't totally work for me. I drank slowly, but there wasn't much of a change. The Libertine was delicious and unique. My husband is into fernet-based drinks now so this one was perfect for him. It was bitter, floral, and sweet, topped with soda water, so nicely effervescent. For our second round, I got the Rider of the Purple Sage (Mezcal, Liqoure Delle Sirene Americano, Don Ciccio & Figli Fico D'India, Orgeat, Lime) and my husband got the Murmur of the Bees (Sour Mash Rye, Drambuie, Elderflower Liqueur, Lemon). My drink was delicious, served over a rock and garnished with a flower. Smoky and sweet, citrusy and a little nutty, very well-balanced. I was less impressed with my husband's drink, but it wasn't bad. Just a little simple. The sourness was a little overpowering which threw off the balance a bit. For our last round, we went with the booziest and lightest drink on the menu. The Stag (Hillrock Single Malt Rye, Hudson Bourbon, Italicus Rosolio de Bergamotto, Zirbenz Stone pine Liqueur, Palo Santo) was an interesting old fashioned variation that would've been very good but the bartender stirred it so much and let it sit over ice in the mixing glass for so long that it was pretty diluted once it was served to me. A bummer, because this could've been a powerhouse of a nightcap. When it's already going to be served over a block of ice, diluting it for minutes by excessive stirring is not the move. The Goodnight Moon (Serpoul Wild Thyme Liqueur, Brezza Nebbiolo, Chamomile, Honey, Lime) is so low-ABV it's almost booze-free. Just an ounce of thyme liqueur and a small red wine float are the only alcoholic ingredients in it. This one was creative, woodsy and tasty. This one's for when you want another cocktail but you're not wanting to get too intoxicated. Food-wise, we decided to cobble together a meal here out of some small plates. They have a few mains (entree-sized) as well, but none of them interested us too much. It was all sadly lackluster, but we made it work. Eats, below: Focaccia, whipped ricotta, fennel pollen: B+ Serviceable ricotta dish and one of the cheaper things on the menu. Blistered shishito peppers, salt, lime: B+ Solid shishitos, good portion size. Nothing exciting but shishitos rarely are. They were just the right amount of salty and oily. Garden salad w/ peak greens and vegetables, artichoke vinaigrette, sunflower seeds: A- Super fresh ingredients, light and savory dressing, with a lot of good textures and flavors going on. Earthy and bitter with some crunchiness from the seeds. Beef tartare, shallot aioli, coltura, local mushrooms: B Beef tartare can be served in a bunch of interesting ways but this preparation was kind of boring. I think the mushrooms were pickled because there was some sourness to them. The shallot aioli could've been more flavorful. Atlantic tuna carpaccio, local garlic scapes, capers, aged sherry vinegar: B- The capers, while I'm sure they would be good on some things, were so salty that they overpowered the rest of the dish. The more delicate flavors of the tuna, garlic scapes and sherry vinegar didn't come through enough, so the balance was off. read more

I love walking in with a friend who experiences the maker for the first time. The ceiling height is so grand it's so "Great Gatsby". One day I'll come in full fledged flapper gear. Visited The Maker Lounge for the first time during a recent trip to Hudson, NY. I had heard great things about The Maker Hotel, which had just opened a few weeks ago so we wanted to check out everything from the lounge to the cafe. We had checked out The Maker Cafe earlier that day and was disappointed by the quality of the service there so we were a little nervous about checking out The Maker Lounge, but it didn't disappoint! This is a beautiful bar inside a former carriage house that makes you feel like you're inside Gatsby's private lounge and I loved all the details and the color scheme. We ordered the Hotel Nacional Special cocktail and the Secret Garden cocktail and both were refreshing. We also ordered the arancini to snack on before dinner. This was our first time grabbing drinks inside a bar in over seven months, but the bartenders here were really friendly and made us feel safe and welcome with proper social distancing measures. Would love to come back here when they change their cocktail menu for the wintertime. read more

Went for brunch on a whim and early enough to get a table. The host was amazing. Exceptionally friendly and great at making you feel welcome and cared for. The space was perfectly inviting, open and airy while still feeling intimate. Every detail was clearly well thought out. The Bloody Mary with the pepper tequila substitute was the best bloody I've ever had. A perfect blend of all the right ingredients. Kudos to the bartender's creativity. The house made sausage was without a doubt exceptional and the "greens," a seemingly simple Mixed green salad that was delicious enough to make me rethink my dinner salads at home. The duck confit was just enough without being too rich, the portion is big enough for 2 to share. Our server was exceptional! Present at all the right times but not invasive at all. The experience was luxuriously casual, unrushed, as brunch should be, with a little edge of decadence and a feeling of being invited to a close friends home for a simple and magical get together. I would literally drive up from NYC any weekend morning to have this experience all over again. read more

This is a review of the Maker Hotel Lounge, which is the cocktail bar separate from the Restaurant and Cafe. Our party of five arrived at 10pm last Saturday night and entered from the back, alley-designated entrance (as opposed to passing through the Hotel). We were immediately 'greeted' by the bartender and told that our group could not be accommodated before she even glanced around the room. For context, aside from the Lounge's beautiful bar seating (which bore 2-3 empty seats) there are also several small lounge seating areas. Two of these areas could each comfortably accommodate 5-6 people. Instead each area was occupied by solitary couples. There were more intimate seating areas either of these couples could have been nicely asked by staff to consolidate to. In particular because one of the couples was entirely sprawled across the couch that made up half of one seating area, seemingly over-served and falling asleep amidst a spent champagne bottle and numerous glasses. [see attached pic] -- Not the look you want for your upscale cocktail lounge at 10pm. Across the room there was also an empty table with four highback armchairs, and a 5th seat could have easily been added, but we were told that grouping was 'reserved.' A head scratcher for sure, but being industry folks we offered to split up into two groups. The bartender shot that idea down. I asked what she would suggest we do, to which she replied, "The Cafe should be able to accommodate you." As we walked toward the Cafe, but still very much in earshot, a patron asked the bartender where we were from. The bartender replied, "Russians?" (we're not, but still...huh?) We entered the cafe at 10:04pm only to be told by the server there that the Cafe doesn't seat past 9:15pm, despite having just been sent there by her colleague. Unfortunate situation all around. And the Lounge would still be open for another two hours (12am). If demographics are anything to weigh into this, we're four women and one man, all professionals in our 30s to mid-40s. Not that anything related to how were are outwardly presented should have elicited the bartender's unwelcoming and unaccommodating response. Unfortunately I'm bracing for the stock response to unfavorable feedback that seems to be management's fallback move at The Maker: "Thank you for your honest feedback. Our team really appreciates hearing from our guests and will share your comments with our team. We hope to welcome you in our space again." A more effective response would be an all-staff meeting to address the flow of customers and seating arrangements (especially when seated customers appear to be over-served and in full repose on the couches), how not to scare off business, and not to make disparaging remarks about potential customers in the workplace. read more

My bf and I stumbled upon this gem after dinner and felt like we were transported to a cozy yet roomy and sophisticated bar in Europe. The attention to detail in the decor is astounding. We were led to a spacious outdoor courtyard with a gorgeous fountain within view of a swimming pool that's reserved for the guests of the hotel. When the menu came I was faced with the difficult decision of having to pick from a wide selection of top notch wine, cocktails and aperitifs. We stopped here on our way to dinner down the street. The lounge is tucked in the back of the hotel and has old speak easy vibes. Plenty of seating area but it was full upon our arrival at 5pm! The drinks were great and I loved getting the perfume accompaniment that inspired the cocktail. Really cool concept. My wife and I stopped in here last night to end our evening with a cocktail. The ambiance was great, warm lighting, interesting paintings, comfortable seating, and a fireplace. We ordered from the fragrance menu, which unfortunately isn't on their site menu and I can't recall both names. I love a pink drink, and ordered the one with hibiscus and rose in it and it was absolutely delicious! Service was amazing as well. I unfortunately didn't get the name of our server, but they were very attentive, quick, and fun! I had some difficulty choosing a drink and they came over to give some recommendations before almost running back to the bar and putting the order in. I got a really good vibe from everyone here, and I'm sad I'm only visiting for a few days! If this were local to me it would absolutely be my new favorite cocktail bar to hangout in. read more

I honestly don't even know how to begin this review. We made this reservations several weeks ago with much excitement for The Maker Restaurant, as we have been coming to The Maker Lounge and Cafe since it's inception. The worst part about it, I made the reservation for my partner because he was so excited about it. Our waiter was so sweet...clearly trying very hard to give the best service. And he did. Rhys was attentive and very respectful throughout the meal. Unfortunately that's where the meal fell short...the appetizers were ok. Nothing to rave about. The cavatelli was actually fantastic (if you get through the rest of this review and still feel ok supporting the establishment, definitely try it). Then we got the steak. It was tough. And I mean TOUGH. For a second I was trying to decide if it was the cheap steak knife, or the steak itself. It was definitely the steak. We complained, and ironically it was the owner who checked on us. He was apologetic, and knowing the level of establishment they want to be, his reaction seemed appropriate. We assumed he was going to comp the entree. Dessert came. I had requested it (and confirmed with the host) that it was my partners birthday. We saw a cake and candle go to the table next to us. Nothing came to us. Finally a chocolate tart comes and we are told it's from the owner because of the tough steak. The bill comes, nothing is comped. Birthday was disregarded. I asked to speak to the owner. He comes over, after another waiter comes to charge my card!!!! He was appalling. Beyond condescending. I have never felt so disrespected. He took no accountability, pathetically offered champagne. Why would I want champagne when it's clear all I want to do is leave? I've never been to a dining establishment and been treated like the service I deserved was less than that of the next table. It's a pity. Beautifully designed. Hard working team. The owner clearly does not know how to manage a team, and has very little knowledge of the service required to keep an establishment like this open. read more

My husband and I stopped in on Saturday night. We entered and looked around for a table. We went up to the bar to see if we could get a drink. The bartender said she would get the manager. The manager came over and informed my husband that they were closing in 11 mins, even though they weren't closing for 45 mins. She said we couldn't stay and stand at the bar and told us the "regulars" go across the street. One word AWESOME!! Was in Hudson on a business trip. It was a Tuesday night and many restaurants were closed. My hotel made the recommendation that I check out the Maker lounge and glad I did. I went to the Maker Cafe for a friend's birthday; these comments only reflect my own impressions, and not theirs. If you're going to spit in someone's food, spit in mine if I ever come back. They did not have the item I ordered from the outdated menu. They also did not have the drink I ordered, so everything I actually wanted was so very very artisanal and rare that it didn't even exist, which was a disappointment by itself. The worst part of the experience happened during billing; we split the bill between three parties, which I guess can be really confusing if you're too busy making your own designer coleslaw instead of knowing math or whatever. I don't think that splitting a check is really that unusual. After we left, we realized that the waiter simply pocketed $60-90 given in cash for one bill for himself, and billed the two credit cards given to him for the entire meal, instead of dividing it three ways. Maybe he felt that he was the absolute best server that ever existed, and was entitled to a 60% tip... but the horror doesn't even end there. While my own credit card was fine, my friend was charged the bulk of the meal on her card. I've been told that took at least a week to even get a manager on the phone to sort it all out, since nobody wanted to deal with it. But that's not it! Before the whole ordeal was done, their card was charged THREE MORE TIMES, for random amounts, for absolutely no reason - a total of at least $500 that took an absolute battle to get fixed. The food was exceptionally good - even the stuff that I ate in place of the stuff they forgot to take off of the menu. But the overall impression I'm left with is that overall, The Maker Cafe just has no goddamned clue what they're doing. Maybe they'll grow into themselves and just how fancy they're trying to be, but when you can't even run a register or update your menu, it's an absolutely pathetic start.
