When I visit Md I always want crab cakes so this was a new one to try. We usually do McDonnell's and I wanted to try another one. Everything here is a la cart which will add up. I also found it a bit much to charge me 5cents for a bag when I spent $165!! Really when I'm told most restaurants don't. Mark off already. They do let you sample which is nice. Can't say they were the friendliest either but whatever. Crab cakes were good but definitely has more filler than the other place. I liked the curry cauliflower. The crab soup was ok, it did have good amount of crab. I've had better. Overall worth a try but I'll probably stick to my other place. read more

Best Crab Cakes EVER! Every time I go to Potomac I like to pick up their Crab Cakes. Best there is!

Visited River Falls Market on March 8 and ordered chicken tenders, a beef empanada, and pasta with sundried tomatoes. The food itself was fine. What bothered me was a surprise 3% "tariff fee" added to our $34.02 bill. I didn't see any signage explaining this charge, and the cashier didn't mention it when we ordered. None of the items we purchased seemed like something that would obviously be affected by tariffs, so the fee felt confusing and unexpected. It also appeared that sales tax was applied to the tariff fee, which made the charge feel even less transparent. I live nearby and frequent the village, so I like supporting local businesses. But surprise fees without clear notice leave a bad impression. If there's going to be an extra charge, it should be clearly disclosed before customers order. Because of this experience, I unfortunately won't be returning. read more

Just purchased a One Pound order of fresh COD that I personally picked from the glass display case for $34. I asked them to make it a Fish and Chips special Order. It was god awful. They simply took the one pound of COD split it in two and breaded it on One side. and sold it to me like that. Didn't include tarter sauce or offer me any. The COD batter was under cooked and you could literally taste the raw gooey flower. When you picked the COD up from the tin foil container it simply fell apart. When, I called to complain the girl said that's the way they do it and that she packed it herself. so she knew it was right. Really??? Have you ever had fish and chips in a half pound portion that was under cooked and battered on one side only?? The girl simply offered no apology and stood by the fact that it was supposed to be under cooked in half pound pieces. Will never go there again. Such a rip-off read more

Looks really tiny from the outside, but it opens up into a decently-sized shop. I love the pints of Sprinkles ice cream in the freezer, although they are a bit pricey at nearly ~$8. I also tried the crab cake, which was a good size. It's a solid cake with minimal filler. The best part though is the tartar sauce! It's a light orange-ish color and I'm not sure what's exactly in it, but it's so much tastier than regular tartar sauce. read more

Been going here for years always great quality great service and seafood is always the best.

We've been going here since it first opened with the previous owner and stop in at least once a week. The food is delicious and you can easily put together a restaurant quality meal for your dinner. As everyone said, the crab cakes are delicious but so are all the sides, dips, soups, fresh seafood, etc. I find the service to be top notch, I never wait long for someone to serve me efficiently and with a friendly manner. I've also used their catering menu many times to serve larger groups as well as Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners & it's always terrific. Yes, it's expensive but you get what you pay for. read more

While we are certainly not here every week (especially not in the winter), we do stop by in the summer more frequently to get their fresh fish which has always been good, but expensive. I don't mind paying higher prices for quality and I've always been able to justify the expense on that basis. After this weekend, I won't be back. We were shopping locally and stopped by to pick something up pre-made so that I wouldn't have to cook. While what we purchased was mostly good (hence the two stars), when I went to slice up the apple pie we literally just purchased an hour earlier I noticed some discoloration of the pastry. When I looked more closely, it was out of date and the pastry had mold on it. Tossed in the bin! Not worth my while to drive back out to get a refund or complain, but lesson learned and we won't be back. I wish I had checked in to Yelp before going, but it's a place we've never had a problem with before so I didn't think to look. Sold me rotten salmon. I am a chef and have seen salmon of similar quality after about a week in the fridge. Ownership highly unprofessional, instead of owning up to their mistake and apologizing they are questioning my intentions and story. Ownership also stated "they've never had a complaint about the salmon" well that's a lie because you can scroll down a few reviews and see someone else say "inedible salmon".... Well it's true the salmon was rotten and I have no reason to "undermine" your business other than to tell the truth. Ownership actually told me "that's not very nice" because I said they sold me bad salmon... I bought salmon for over $25 a pound and it was rotten. Nothing else to it. Thanks a bunch. read more

Best crab cakes ever! Their crabcakes consists mainly of jumbo lumps of crabmeat with very little filler holding them together. Way better than Phillip's crabcakes. I also enjoy their crawfish dip. It is very tasty and filled with meat. The sides are nice and make throwing together a meal quick and easy. The service is superb. There are always friendly faces asking if I need help. read more

For the positives, this place has the best challah I have found ANYWHERE in maryland. It is aesthetically pleasant and has a wide variety of offerings. For the negative, most inedible salmon I have ever had. To their credit when I actually called and complained they kindly offered to replace it. But I dont understand how, the second was just as bad. The crabcakes are good but personally I think those at the Potomac grocer across the street are better. Let me begin by saying that I agree with all of the other Yelp reviews - the prices here are HIGH - but, you get what you pay for. If you are looking for the freshest, just-flopped-outta-the-water-and-onto-the-counter seafood, including options you won't find at your typical grocery store, like Black Cod, Arctic Char, Sea Bass, Squid, Soft Shell Crabs and other delectable seafood specialty items (and some lovely local and European finds), then this neighborhood gem is for you! I make at least 1 trip each week to River Falls to pick up some fish for dinner and I have yet to walk in and not see at least 4-6 other people in there doing the same. Although space is a little tight in there, make sure you ask who is next in line and while you're sure to be distracted by some of their specialty chocolates and other treats on the tables, pay attention to your spot in line so you aren't skipped over. Once it's your turn, the level of customer service you receive will amaze you. I usually tell the person helping me what ingredients I have on hand at home, and they will recommend not only what their freshest options are, but will even make suggestions as to what will pair best with what I happen to have on hand. If you're cooking more than 1 portion, just tell them how many portions you need and they will cut them perfectly so you have 1 less thing to do when you get home. I also love picking up some of their uncooked crab cake mix, with foolproof instructions on how to cook them to perfection. Although the portion looks huge if you're not cooking for a crowd, you can just scoop a little out at a time and make a fresh crab cake for yourself or sautee some of it and throw it on some pasta or on top of a steak for a nice treat. And when you spread that cost out over a few meals, it works out pretty well! read more

The only reason I'm dropping this to 4 stars is the prices. But with the incredible quality you receive, its well worth it. This place is primarily a fish/steak/poultry market, but does also sell lots of prepared foods, fresh sushi, salads, beer, and small grocery items. Since the store expanded about a year or two ago, the quantity of high quality breads, and other things like the sushi, has drastically increased. Last night, my parents purchased some fresh tuna, scallops and shrimp, all of which were as fresh as fresh can be. The scallops were huge and extremely tasty - though part of that was my preparation - but mostly the freshness of the scallops. This place isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. Every other review here mentions the prices being high and they are...but the quality of the fish is second to none. I have shopped here many times over the years, but hadn't visited in quite some time. The past two weeks I have purchased Arctic Char and Fluke at around 19.99 a lb. Again, that sounds high, but when you see the quality it will all make sense. That pound fed three people with a little left over. At a restaurant for that same fish, I would have paid, at a minimum $20+ per plate...that is where the value is! read more

Simply amazing. Pricey, yes, but the quality of their fish is without reproach (at leas for everything i tried so far). I bought some sea bass there recently and, honestly, it was absolute best i've ever had. If the owner is present, you are in for a treat. He gives great advise and doesn't seem to be at all bothered by picky customers like myself. I consider my trips to River Falls a special treat. We went this weekend while in Potomac and finally got a chance to eat what we picked up last night. Initial thoughts - very pricey and very crammed. It seemed like the 4 customers in the shop kept running into each other. Everything looked delicious. After eating - we picked up two of the small Shepard's pies. They were delightful but would have been better enjoyed if reheating directions had been included with them. We sort of threw them into the oven and kept checking to see when they might be heated all the way through. The pie was really good, but I am not sure it was necessarily $7 good when I can walk up to the McGinty's Irish pub in downtown Silver Spring and for the same price get a bigger and better serving and not have to wash the dishes afterward. read more

One star off because of the high prices and because it was better when the owner was always there. He could tell you how to perfectly cook any item they sell. Now it's a bunch of high school kids fumbling around behind the counter. They've made enough profit to open up two restaurants surrounding their shop. With the amount of customers they have and their Potomac location, they can charge whatever they want, but I would've liked to have seen them make a bigger market and cheaper prices instead of putting in the restaurants. The hidden gem that this place once was now feels like a crowded Wallmart without the low low prices. But I'm a Marylander, we love our seafood, and this place has the best. I'll be back. read more

Scouted out the "new" RFSCo. this morning. We are "regulars" over at their competitors Potomac Grocer and longtime customers of the previous owner. In my book, both are lacking and frankly, are more or less the same. Seemed like RF had a bit more of a selection but regardless, the selection was literally the same stuff between both places. Maybe a few exceptions but the same stuff. Also of note was comparing prices - RF was more expensive (but not by much) compared with Potomac Grocer. We keep going back to Potomac Grocer for whatever reason and probably still will just to avoid crossing River Road and getting run over by moms in their suburbans in a rush to get their Starbucks. read more

I've just heard River Falls closed and I am so sad. When I visit home this is my first stop for everything from sushi to chicken tenders to chopped liver! It was a high end grocery store, sushi restaurant, deli, gourmet prepared foods, wine and beer store all rolled into one. They did a lot and they did it all right.
