Three stars for the nostalgia of rum buns alone. Been meaning to stop by this place for YEARS and finally made it! Any Marylander of the Boomer and GenX generation knows about O'Donnell's RUM BUNS. I used to come here with family back in its heyday and these were served table side before our meal. How crazy is that, a nice lil somewhat sinful dessert BEFORE some MD crab?! Those were the days! The rum buns are more nostalgia more than anything, I wouldn't say they'll blow your socks off, but hey, nostalgia is nostalgia. Well, I'll need to dine in here for a full and complete verdict, but my quick grab and go visit was a tad chaotic. Service for taking orders could improve - you walk in, there's a seafood counter to your left, bakery counter to your right (both were unmanned when I walked in) and in the middle is a deli section with the cash register where I assume they take orders. We stood there for a few good minutes before getting anyone's attention despite the fact a manager asking staff (not customers) if everyone was being helped. Clearly staff did not know who was waiting to check out, take orders or just waiting for their orders to arrive. So it was just weird. No one greeting you as you walk in either, it just also weird because there's no clear line anywhere you stand. Otherwise, rum buns were as I remembered them. Also picked up crab dip and chicken salad from the grab and go section from the back and they were just ok, not bad, not great. Great place for a seafood dinner and to pick up fresh seafood if you're dining in the market. As others have said (thank you for helping other Yelpers out), do make a reservation if you want to dine in the market. I called and got the small bistro table for two in the back by the bar. I wasn't sure this little table was going to hold three plates of food but with some creative angling, we made it work. We walked in at 6:00 pm and there were plenty of staff in the back at the bar but no one said anything to us, not even a greeting. So we stood for a little bit by the door until we moved closer to the bar. Finally someone asked us if we needed help. We said we had a reservation. But it did take a while for them to come back to get our drinks and order our meal. A bumpy start but all is forgiven since we did very much enjoy the food. I got the crab norfolk with fries and broccolini on the side. If you love crab as much as I do, there's nothing not to like about the crab norfolk. Lots of tender and delicious crab cooked in butter and vinegar. I savored every bite. The other entree was a special request and we're grateful that they were able to accommodate. We asked for a fish and chips and without hesitation, we were told it was possible. The fish was the cod in a nice batter. Our server was helpful and friendly once we got served. I'm thinking of sitting at the bar next time which seems to have more room for all the plates we want to order. The desserts looked great but we will have to try them next time. Plenty of parking. Such a hidden gem. The seafood is incredibly fresh, and the crab cakes are some of the best I've had. They also have amazing desserts and great seafood you can grab to go and cook at home. First thing: make a reservation if you would like to eat inside. There are only 3 inside tables and smaller inside bar I believe. Thankfully, I was able to grab a table reservation inside as it was a little warm outside. This place is a market also serving up some yummy food. We got the crab cakes and the pecan crusted cod. Both entrees were delicious. The crab cakes are all crab! The cod was cooked perfectly. Our server was prompt and very nice. Before you leave, get the rum bun even if you have to take it to go. I took my son to O'Donnell's Market for his birthday. We were lucky to get one of the three indoor tables (note to self: make a reservation next time). I ordered the Pecan Crusted Cod with lemon butter sauce. The only word I can use to describe it is...succulent. it is the best thing I've eaten in ages. It was just... special. I also killed my diet because I HAD to have a rum bun. I've been eating really fine seafood at O'Donnell's for decades. First on Wisconsin Avenue, then in the Kentlands, and now in Potomac. I went here on my lunch break because I'd read an article stating this was one of the best places to buy a crabcakes from I. Rockville. I got there, parking was available. I was immediately greeted when walking in the door. The place was not crowed but people were sitting outside and at the Oyster Bar. I asked the person how I ordered and he told me to go to the register. A lady immediately walked up and ask me had I been helped. I told her no and placed my order. I told her it was to go and ordered a Crabcake sandwich with the Kale Apple Salad & a key lime tart. She said about 20 minutes. It was 20 minutes I got my food. Took it back to my office, and ate it. What you don't see mentioned often enough, is there ready to go menu of delicious side dishes. I got the twice baked potato and it was out of this world. It was creamy and cheesy and easy to reheat. I will definitely go back for more. My friend got their buttternut squash vegetable side. He said it was excellent. He also bought a bottle of very good vinegar for cooking. It was pricey. I bought an oatmeal raisin cookie that was melt in your mouth delicious. It was large, soft, plenty of raisins, and flavorful. O'Donnell's Market has a beautiful seafood case. The fish and crab looked beautiful, but the prices were high. The service was great and it was nice to see the owners sons waiting on customers in the store. I am sure I will be back. Went into O'Donnell's Market to investigate if I could buy some hake (in Spanish, merluza) which is one of my favorite fish, but difficult to find in the US (but very common in Spain). The owner told me that they knew which fish this was, and that he would be able to order it for me, fresh from their fishmonger, and ready the next day! Great, fast service! I picked up my order today (a little over 5 lbs.) and the fish was fresh, fileted and skinned. It looked great. I requested it to be packed in ice and they helped me with that. Then, I stayed for lunch since they have a counter in the back where you can sit down and order from their seasonal menu. I chose the scallops, which I was told that we're "sushi grade" and had them sautéed in lemon butter sauce. They were delicious! I also had their fried clam appetizer, which was good but not great (I found it to be a little greasy, probably because they were fried in oil that was not the correct temperature). The counter is very nicely set, and the ambiance is relaxed, on the bay vibe. The service was super friendly and efficient. They also serve wine (both white and red) by the glass or the bottle. We went to take my friend there for a birthday dinner. If you need seating indoors, but not at the bar, you need to reserve a low top table. The manager was very friendly and went out of her way to make good when we shared with her our concerns about lack of service by the waiter. He became very busy at the back bar so we had to ask other for help. The staff is very friendly. The crab gumbo was very flavorful, would've loved to see more crab meat. The rum buns are amazing the crabcakes or season nicely with minimal filler. the steamed lobster was flavorful, especially if you dipped in butter. those who don't eat seafood the hamburger is a good call. We tried a good variety and liked everything, with the exception of the brussel sprouts (we just prefer less crunchy /more cooked sprouts) but the flavors were all great. The seafood bisque was amazing. The New England clam chowder was good but the bisque was better! I really enjoyed my crab cakes, and the desserts we had, so definitely try those if you come here! Located in a typical DC Metro Area strip mall, seating is limited to a couple tables inside and a few tables outside. You're in a strip mall so its not exactly fancy. Service was excellent, everything was clean and we had a great meal. Also highly recommend that you CALL for reservations, they are busy. No online reservation system here. Food was wonderful, all the seafood was super fresh and cooked on the spot (it seems they just cook they stuff they are selling, which is great). Many highlights, fried fish tacos, crabs cakes, crusted cod, and the fries (I don't know what to tell you the fries at this seafood market are excellent). We ordered a salmon dish for two toddlers to share, and they went out of their way to split the salmon fillet in two and cook each toddler their own plate of food. The crab cakes had ample meat, but a little too much mayo. It was well seasoned, and still was a good choice. For sides, we had a mixed salad, brussel sprouts, fries, and broccoli rabe. They were all properly prepared. Since we were full, we took a sticky bun home and had it the next day. They did a nice job with it. One other little complaint. My water glass sat empty for too long. Service is great and everyone was friendly. We sat outside and seating was comfortable. There is also inside bar seating. The market offers lots of take home options. For to go I got the shrimp salad-delicious; lamb salami- tasty; and peanut butter brownies and of course the rum bun. Best crabcakes in the Rockville area and even better lump crab norfolk, which is just lumps of crabmeat - no binder or filler - served with sizzling butter and tarragon oil in a sizzling pan. Scallops entree is also outstanding. O'Donnell's is more of a take-out fresh PREMIUM seafood market but they have a bar and a few tables (more tables outside weather-permitting) for dine-in. They are also known to have the best burgers around. Great hidden gem that is always busy but never packed. Entrees come with two sides and again, all premium. House salad with the tomato-based homemade "Catalina-style" dressing is fantastic. Broccolini is always sweet, juicy, slightly crisp and cooked just right. Treat yourself! read more

My family used to love going to O'Donnells in Bethesda, and then by the time I was born, Kentlands haha We loved going for almost any family occasion we could make up. So while it's not the same exact experience as back in the day, we are so happy to be able to get some of our favorite staples: Crab Norfolk and Rum Buns :) :) They offer a larger dinner menu compared to their more abbreviated carry-out menu offered last year: a variety of appetizers, soups/salads, all their sandwiches, and double the number of entrees. They also have weekly preset meals kits for 2 or 4 people every Wednesday and have these listed in advance on their website and emails. We have enjoyed their crab dip, crab cakes, lobster roll, and crab Norfolk. We have only done carry out, but they have some outdoor dining. It is easy to call in, and you can request a time you would like to pick up in advance which is really nice. When you arrive, you simply call and they are right out to your car quickly! They close a little early compared to some places and sometimes some items will run out, but it is all fresh food, no compromises there in quality, so if you keep this in mind it should be smooth sailing haha Ordering ahead has kept us from being too weak about seeing bakery items in person when hungry, but we have a hard time resisting the rum buns whenever we order. I think this is the go-to place around here for fresh seafood. I usually get the organic salmon and the tuna, both that I've used for tartare and crudo. Always fresh and always excellent. You pay a premium but it's worth it. Crab cakes, although they have nearly doubled in price and shrunk by a third, are still outstanding and the changes are simply due to market realities. One of these days I might try eating here, but I think my prep is always better than most but the finest restaurants. Yup, I recognize the self praise but i happen to think it's accurate. Lol My only complaint is the customer service. Most times they are polite and responsive but a few times too often for my liking I have felt ignored, invisible or secondary to those eating in. When I am standing at the fish counter ignored and three people are standing around doing nothing it strikes me as a problem. If not for this one thing I'd give it five stars. read more

My dad always took the family to the O'Donnells restaurant. It was a place he frequented in Bethesda for business lunches. Well he followed the establishment when it moved to Kentlands. Once it closed, we were happy to see this market open. We go for treats every now and again. This helps us with memories of Dad. Anyway, we ordered the key lime pie for a family visit in St. Inigoes. It was ready for pick up as prearranged. The pie was perfect -- perfectly prepared, flavorful, and delicious. It was not too sweet with just the right amount of sour, and the texture was perfect. Came here for lunch on a weekday and they have some outdoor seating set up. I ordered the crab cakes entree with a side of fries and Brussels sprouts (4/5), which were really good. They also have a bakery inside, so I got one of the lemon meringue tarts but to be honest the meringue tasted quite old (2/5). If you go, stick to the seafood. So I remember O'donnells as a dark old restaurant in Bethesda that my grandparents took me to- sorry, my age is showing. Now it's a bright and cheery market right off of 270 and Montrose. We stopped in yesterday and picked up the crab cake sammies with 2 sides each. I am gonna go out on a limb and say they have the best crab cakes in Montgomery County. I said it. You heard it here first. Their sides are AWESOME. They have tons of low carb options for those still pretending to follow their New Year's resolutions. We had the broccolini, cauliflower mac and chz, greenbeans and roasted beets. YUM. Their Seafood chowder was my favorite thing. It was similar to a lobster bisque flavor with cream and sherry... and tons of big chunks of what I'm assuming was some kind of white fish. It was really awesome. I can't even talk about their dessert selection because it's just too over the top- in a good way. There was someone literally baking stuff right in the front. Little cheesecakes, tarts, blondies, etc. OMG they looked incredible, but I AM one of the losers still trying to eat healthy so we abstained from that. Their fish for pick up was beautiful. Sushi grade Tuna and Salmon. Fresh oysters. Huge Sea Scallops, halibut, artic char, etc. It was all just fresh and gorgeous. There are a few small tables in the front and then a counter style seating area in the back. They did have tents and heaters out front so if it hadn't been below freezing yesterday I'm sure they would've been hoppin outside. It was not cheap. But when it's fresh and delicious- what do you expect? I get that the market price for crab has skyrocketed but we did gulp a little bit when we were rung up. Not their fault.
