I have been frequenting this establishment since I was a child (I'm now almost 40). I started going there in the mornings with my dad; he would get a cappuccino and a croissant, and I would get a hot chocolate and a muffin. Ralph and his son Jon owned the joint back in the day. Unfortunately when Ralph passed away, Jon feared the level of commitment to keep the shop up; he already had a life of his own and a family. So, he sold "The Market" to a different family. My dad passed away and, between that and the original ownership being gone, I went on a hiatus from there; it was almost four years - cold turkey with no amazing food - before I went back. Well, my first experience with the new ownership was so lovely! The menu had not changed at all; they still had all of the amazing, custom deli sandwiches printed on the menu. They still had the same decor littered throughout the establishment. There was still a vast wine and beer selection to the right, and they still served that really creamy, flavorful soft serve during the Spring and Summer months. What made me the happiest was that, despite the ownership being completely different, they honored the integrity of the original business owned by Ralph, because they knew that's why the place was packed on the daily. Well, after having frequented this amazing place for nearly three decades, I've now created a lasting memory between me and my son. He absolutely loves "The Market", and it is such a special place for me to pass down a morning tradition that I used to have with my dad. Thanks to everyone who works at "The Market on the Boulevard"; the Cabin John Club is the best sandwich I've ever had in my life and, because you have had the torch passed to you, the daily packed deli and cafe has continued to remain so. If you haven't visited this local gem, I highly recommend it. My only suggestion is this: try and go during a "non-peak" time. The parking in the little outdoor mall that houses "The Market" is extremely limited and, during lunch and dinner, parking is a luxury. However, even if you have to wait to park, the sandwiches and soft serve alone will make it all worth while. read more

This Market is without a doubt the best place to get Lunch in the Bethesda area!. The service is quick and food is delicious.They offer a wide variety of foods(sandwiches being thier #1) as well as beverages such as smoothies, coffee , and even ice cream!You can dine inside or even right outside as they have nice tables for you and your friends or family to enjoy a great meal. This place was great! I stopped by for a quick lunch while on a bike ride to Great Falls. I checked out the menu online and called from outside to place my order (COVID-19), and it was ready in just a few minutes. The staff were polite, the place was clean, there were pandemic precautions in place, and the sandwich and espresso were delicious. Several other reviews here mentioned high prices. Maybe they changed their prices, but $7.99 for a good sandwich in 2020 is completely reasonable. I recommend the "CJ Island" sandwich - yum! Found this hidden gem and im glad I did! My go-to is the Great falls sandwich. They make it fresh and the seasoning is so good, need to find out what they put in it! I also like that they have a big selection of beverages to choose from. I found Susosu water in a pouch this visit. Never tasted a water so clean! I'll be getting this again! Agree with other reviews about the pricing here. I'd also say they are borderline stealing from customers as they'll charge above even listed prices and hope you don't notice. I ask for my receipt every time I'm here and without fail they've charged the wrong price. When confronted the cashier will attempt to give you a credit to buy something else, and eventually gives in and gives back cash for the price discrepancy. I live in the neighborhood but only visit The Market once every year or two. The food is good but the prices are so annoying. The menu at the deli counter has prices and those are reasonable. Hidden gem... Unassuming... A couple words I'd use to describe this place. You walk In and your like, "oh a nice little beer and wine store." As a native Baltimorean, I've experienced some of the best of the best delis in the region. A few weeks ago while driving through Glen Echo, I noticed The Market on the Boulevard. I ordered the Seven Locks/Hot Pastrami and let me tell you, it was phenomenal! It was so good, I drove back today from Reston, Virginia. By the way, try it served on the French Bread--you will not be disappointed. To top it off, the service equals the taste and quality of food. Recently, I've noticed a serious downturn in customer service and, this morning, I had to walk out of an empty store with no one behind the deli counter (although I could hear them speaking in the back room) and with one employee focusing her attention on a computer, all while leaving me standing for several minutes. I note this same behavior during the store's busier times.....again, there will be several employees working to make sandwiches, etc., but, even when busy, an employee will be focused on her computer screen, all while the line to pay grows longer and the customers grow impatient. The actual bowls look nothing like the picture on the billboard. (Misleading) Never had a boiled egg on ramen. Typically cooked in or fried then laid on top. Wife and daughter tossed theirs. At a quick glance from driving by, The Market on the Boulevard (TMOTB) seems like an ordinary neighborhood deli/beer+wine store. However, take a stroll inside and you will find a gourmet oasis in an area (Potomac/Cabin John, Maryland) rather sparse of foodie places. In short, a gem for nice and simple Korean food or stocking a gourmet pantry full of imported/domestic prepared foods, coffee bar, deli of sandwiches and hot entrees, and dairy section, all complete with very friendly and impeccable service. At our first visit, my dining companion and I sampled their Bibimbap and Jap-chae. A healthy dose of shiitake, carrots, spinach, and sauteed beef, each entree had a fresh, clean, and refreshing balance (also rice, Go-chu-jang, and egg for the former; plus white sweet potato flour-based vermicelli noodles for the latter). For the quality and neighborhood, $9.99 for each was reasonable and compelled our return for Kim-bap (Korean rolls which was not listed on their catering menu but definitely available upon request) to have catered for a party. For our party, spoke to Naomi who took our order. She asked told us to come by our projected pick-up time of 6:30pm of the day of our party. When we called that day, Naomi was not there so someone else told us to come by 6pm. Since we had enough time, we arrived at then and was surprised to see Naomi walk in just before us. She told us that 6:30pm was indeed the right time, and they working on our Kim-bap to finish at 6:30pm ON THE DOT! Wow! Kim-bap is food meant to eat fresh, and boy did they mean it! 8-) Since we ordered plenty (minimum 10 rolls at $5/roll in order to get the nice catering plate on the house), we asked to have a few rolls while waiting. After a short wait, she brought some out. Made with rice, carrots, spinach, egg, dan-moo-ji (pickled daikon), fishcake, and sauteed beef (we asked half to be a pescatarian with shiitake instead of the beef), the Kim-bap was super fresh, balanced, and well-seasoned! When Naomi noticed that we finished eating, she generously brought out more Kim-bap. Since they were the end pieces and were not going to be included in our order, she wanted us to enjoy them as well. They tasted even better being higher roasted seaweed and roasted sesame oil to rice ratio! Service befitting of a high-end restaurant, TMOTB earned even more points through its stellar service! To wash down our surprisingly generous pre-party meal, we had some water from the soda fountain. What resulted was a culinary tear of joy! :_) TMOTB's water tasted amazing! Fresh, clean, cool, and incredibly pure, the soda fountain water tasted better than water served at many high-end restaurants in DC and around the world that we experienced. *Begin Soapbox* Why do I make such a big deal about the (drinking) water? It is THE MOST ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IN THE KITCHEN, for preparing and cooking as well as for drinking. It is absolutely astonishing how many restaurants overlook this most basic of basics (i.e. Adour in February 2009). If the water is heavily chlorinated, not only does it detract from the flavor of the food, it also compromises the health of the diner. Good restaurants have water that is mostly devoid of the chlorine odor when served with ice, but very few are so well purified that it tastes completely inert (with a slightly sweet aftertaste for delicate palates). TMOTB elevated itself to another echelon by going above and beyond. *End of Soapbox* In addition to the great food and service, TMOTB is stocked with fancy nuts, chocolates, organic milk, locally-raised eggs, gourmet pasta/sauce, and ice cream. This place has been great since I was growing up and would bike down here to get a sandwich, a drink and chips for $5 as my demonstration of the fact that I was a free kid who could do what he wanted. It's still good and it's on of the few places in the little strip that is worth going to. I've yet to have their Asian specials, but from what I've heard they're only OK at best. The thing to get here are the sandwiches. I always get the C&O, which is turkey breast, avocado, provolone, tomato and honey mustard on a French roll. My wife always gets the Seven Locks, which is their reuben. Both are great as are the specials of the day. Seriously, it's as good a sandwich as I've had from a little deli in a while. To have it walking distance from my house is pretty great. Everything else is overpriced from the chips, to the drinks, to the wine, to the beer. The selection of beer is OK, but not as good as the co-op in the same shopping center, so I go there. I suspect the same is true with the wine, but I'm not a huge wine person. If the deserts or chips were better and/or cheaper, it would probably get 5 stars. As it is, a local sandwich shop with good sandwiches earns it a sold 4. read more

Overpriced is the best characterization of grocery items here. Milk is $6.99 a gallon, the nearby Bethesda Coop is at least $2 cheaper. An evening stroll in this little strip mall reveals three busy restaurants but not the Market. Cabin John consumers have voted and again the market comes up short. Wine prices are not competitive with the broad selection at the nearby Bethesda Coop. Maybe the market survives on sandwiches. read more

This is a generally interesting shop selling various market sundries and specialty foods. It's fun to browse, as they typically have some tasty and unique selections of sweets and international foods. But it'd be a better experience if the staff didn't stare at you suspiciously all the time you are walking around the store as if they think you're going to steal something. First of all, $15.99 is really expensive for bulgogi. I could get galbi for that price.. but then she rings me up for $16.99!!! At least fix your sign to reflect the price change but I didn't have the energy to argue over a dollar and I was really disappointed when I got my food because the portions were very small for the price. Stopped by on my way to a client's house and ordered the Cabin John Club for my fiancé and the Avelen for myself. Both of them were so good!!! I actually perfected my fiancé's over mine (my only complaint was there was a little too much coleslaw so it was super messy!) but both sandwiches were soooo good! The rye bread was fresh and so were all the fixings on the sandwiches! Worth every bit of $7.99 each! If you're ever driving down McArthur Blvd and need a snack or meal- def stop by this place and get a sandwich! My fiancé said it's the best sandwich he's ever had! We will definitely be back! They also have Pho and ramen bowls, lots of quick snacks- chips, muffins, donuts, etc., a HUGE drink selection, and beer and wine! It's a nice one-stop shop kind of place! Stopped by after a hike for a quick bite. Grabbed a pho, the seven locks, and a bibimbap to split with my wife (couldn't decide what we wanted with all the options). The pho took the longest cause its made right there on the spot, but even with a few others before us, we only waited maybe 5-10 minutes? Looked around at all the interesting desserts and snacks they have haha. Portions are huge! We had enough to take home leFtovers. The staff was really warm and friendly. Our pho came out really hot (perfect for a cold day) and we finished it off instantly. The sandwich came out on a warm baguette that was perfectly soft on the inside and crunchy outside - stacked with coleslaw/meat/cheese. Bibimbap tasted like authentic korean - ask for extra ggochujang sauce! It was amazing! Definitely planning on stopping by the next time we're in town read more

I used to like this place when it first opened, but with the ownership change, the quality of the sandwiches has gone way downhill, and almost nothing has prices on them. Great little spot! My team sometimes rides in the Glen Echo area, and after we're done we usually stop in here for some grub and, as I desperately needed last Sunday, hot coffee. This is a place that seems to have a lot of locals and regulars frequenting the joint; people are friendly and laid back. I had a gentleman ask me about my ride, and I had no idea who he was. Really nice people, as I said. Their sandwich menu rocks. I had a hard time choosing but ultimately ending up getting something that resembled a Reuben. The quality of the ingredients were top notch; several people at my table commented on the bread, even though we all had different sandwiches. This place is more of a gourmet stop than anything else, so you'll find a ton of variety of the fancier chips, snacks, and what have you. The coffee comes in a wide variety to include flavored, different roasts, and decaf. There's alot of seating, so it's good for groups. You should really check this place out; it's one local business that's worth supporting. read more

If you're on your way to the Carderock or Great Falls area for some [hiking, kayaking, biking, running, etc.] on the Maryland side of the Potomac, there is a little known gem just two miles from the popular lot across from Old Angler's Inn. Located in an always packed strip mall, the Market on the Boulevard is a bourgeois paradise, full of overly trendy snacks, from 20 flavors of baked pita chips, to every variety of Terra chips, to organic wasabi peas, to asian gummies that come in flavors like lychee and aloe. One half houses tastefully chosen wines and beers displayed in classy wooden racks. The other half is an upscale deli which serves prepared foods ranging from racks of lamb to roasted chicken to amazing sandwiches. The sandwiches all have names commemorating local lore, one of my favorites is laden with sliced turkey, avocado, and slathered with a specialty mustard called the C&O. These sandwiches are served up on your choice of homemade bread, which provides for a denser bread than most people are used to, but which I absolutely love. Besides, the homemade bread holds up better should you decide to stop here before heading out to hike to grab some picnic goods. They run you about $6 - $7, but they don't skimp on anything and they are extremely accomodating with special requests. Ain't no Litteri's, but its a solid sandwich that replenishes after a long day on the water. My one complaint is that there is no fruit here except for a sad looking prepackaged fruit salad. Come on, this is a prerequisite for a fru-fru specialty deli! I always come here after I do an early morning whitewater kayaking river run for lunch and I'm never disappointed. Its strange, though, there are several other places in this strip mall, including a chinese restaurant and sushi place that never seem to be open. Its as if the strip mall exists sheerly for this place. And if you happen to think of it, in between the parking lot across from Old Angler's Inn and the Market, there is a wonderful little tomato stand where an elderly gentleman sells beautiful heirloom tomatos.
