THE GOOD: Real cute place... attractive... comfortable... easy parking. Consistently AMAZING homemade soups and fantastic homemade biscotti! Very good tuna sandwiches. Good prices. Did I say the soup was amazing? Try the white bean chicken chili... OMG. And the carrot dill. Unreal delicious. THE NOT SO GOOD: Slow service that could be friendlier at times (especially the young man who seems to not know how to smile and seems perpetually grumpy). You often need to wipe down your own tables from the previous patron. (They should be more attentive to this.) And it's often so cold in the winter that you need to keep your coat on. Come on guys... turn up the heat a few degrees. And a small point, but it would be nice if we didn't have to ask for napkins... just put them out with the other utensils. And lastly, be sure to open the container of take out soup. Mine was 3/4 full. See photo. Come on guys. How about packing your soups like YOU are the ones paying for it. Delicious wraps! I got the chicken caesar and my husband had the buffalo chicken. The amount of chicken was generous and the wrap itself was quite tasty! They also have Sweet Maui onion potato chips... which I don't see at many cafes. Definitely give those a try... yum! read more

I will be fair. This place is delicious; but has its issues. A very surprising find in the small town of Topton, PA. I have only recently discovered this establishment, within the past year. Breakfast is my usual, sometimes lunch. Food is always delicious and fresh. Seating is great, people are very nice....price is fantastic. I recommend it! ______________________________________________ Now for the honest issues. The service is not so great. One experience was during brunch around 11 in the morning. They seemed busy, but had plenty of staff in full view. It took 40 minutes from order to table for two simple sandwiches. All the while I was watching them and waiting with the other customers. At one point standing in view of the kitchen watching the happenings (I had plenty of time to waste). I witnessed about 5-6 people on staff. The cashier (also waiter) was taking lots of orders at a great pace, very calm and patient. One boy making the food in view, but seemed to always be working on the same item, in the same area. One woman acting as waitress bringing food, also making drinks. She did not give napkins with the food. I had to stand in line for 6 minutes, as napkins were behind the ordering counter. No apology, nothing. If I was a waitress, I would have them on hand in my apron, etc. Two or three other staff were confused looking and wandering around in the hustle, or having a smoke break. One even seemed confused about the order receipts hanging, not knowing what was being worked on and what was already on tables. Organization and customer service is key! So if you are willing to wait a long time and have great food with no napkins, this is a great place. read more

I haven't found a ton of eating establishments I would recommend in the upper Berks County area but The Market Cafe is one of my favs! The building is a refurbished little train station with cute cozy spaces. The food is yummy, including a variety of teas and coffees, homemade scones and such, quiches and breakfast sandwiches. I've only gone for breakfast so can't comment on lunch foods, but from the standpoint of ambiance, it's super chill in a good way. Besides the food and location, a lot of what I like about is the groovy music playing in the atmosphere. Nice place for low key breakfast or lunch dates with friend or lover! read more

First time here to this cute little place! We had to eat outside due to the dining room being closed but thankfully the weather was agreeable! I occasionally manage to get unflavored coffee but usually it is flavored with coconut or caramel nut. I always ask for unflavored. My guess is that they don't clean out the coffee grinder between grinds. I need to go somewhere where the baristas taste the coffee they make and care about it. The business has changed hands since my last review. I really wanted to like this place as much as I had before. Perhaps it's a case of, "familiarity breeds contempt," but I must say I've stopped going here altogether. I was understanding when things were just getting started (even though very little, including the staff, has changed) that it was going to be a bit rough around the edges. But after a month, and my orders are either forgotten about or needed to be redone, I was losing patience. Then there was the line to the door that didn't move. I was in and out a couple of times realizing that I wouldn't even get to order for at least 10 minutes. I wasn't the only one leaving. SLOW. But the straw the broke the proverbial camel's back was arriving on a cold Sunday a full 20-25 minutes before they were supposed to close, and they had already turned off the "open" sign and were closing. If you're going to stay open until 1 PM, don't turn off your sign at 12:40. So yeah, they have good food. And yes, the people inside are very friendly. I just don't like to have to remind someone that the food I paid for hasn't been delivered. I don't like to go out of my way to find out the store decided to close early. I'll be back, most likely with others who like to stop. But as a regular, I'm over it. read more

I have recently started frequenting the Market Cafe & find it delightful for lunch. Great soups, salads, and sandwiches await. Some of the best I've had in the area, hands down. Just beware, the indoor seating is limited & does tend to get taken quickly during the lunch hour. During the summer months, outdoor seating is plentiful & nice, but the nearby train makes outdoor dining conversations difficult. read more

Love this place! It has changed hands, but I've seen a lot of growth since then. The food is fresh and so good. The homemade cakes and pastries are fabulous - it's a great place to stop for a fresh, hot cup of coffee (Jamaican Me Crazy is my favorite!) and pastry or a light meal. The atmosphere is really nice and the staff are friendly and the place is clean. They also catered my wedding and I wouldn't have had anyone else cater it - the service was terrific and the food was fantastic. I love that we have some place like this to go in my small home town. Not only is The Market Cafe an amazing breakfast/brunch spot, but they provide catering as well! Alex just catered my 120 person wedding in June 2016 and I cannot sing his praise enough! He was so easy to work with, accommodating to any changes we wanted to make, extremely professional and the service was reasonably priced. Our wedding was at Rodale Institute in a barn with no kitchen amenities except electricity and some counter space and I was frightened to say the least on how someone could cater a wedding under these conditions! Alex had experience catering weddings at Rodale before and put my mind at ease. If he can work under those conditions, this truly speaks to his talent. Not one bump in the road as far as catering service went at the wedding and Alex's staff/helpers were very friendly and hardworking as well! Everyone at the wedding was incredibly happy with the food and said every last dish was perfect. I was told this again and again by my guests how fabulous dinner was. The meal is an extremely important aspect of any wedding or party and I HIGHLY recommend you use The Market Cafe!!!! My wife and I are often join a group of friends on Sundays for breakfast. Young folks who work there and own the place are super friendly. The menu changes up all the time with homemade special. I've never heard anyone in our group disappointed w/ what they ordered. Their smoked salmon with capers,spinach,and sweet onion,cream cheese,and tomato on a toasted everything bagel is as good as it gets! Their coffees are always great. It's no wonder the place is always filled with long distances bike riders stopping to charge up more energy to finish the ride. This place is one of Berks County's best kept secrets. I think the new owners are doing a great job. I find it a real shame that people don't understand how real, fresh food takes time and requires a lot of labor. This place is fantastic. The staff is always friendly. My food is always outstanding. Yes, sometimes it takes some time when their busy but it's always worth it. I am grateful that someone in Topton offers "real food" and not pre-made, frozen, boxed, watered down etc items that everyone else serves. It's an original. Always has been, always will be. By far one of the best places to eat in the Lehigh Valley...food, prices, service. Seriously. It's a little place, but quaint...in an old train depot. Staff very friendly with quirky sense of humor. The place has a beatnik feel to it, like a cool place you'd find in a good college town. Unlike some of the other reviews, I just haven't had a problem with the wait. Usually served within 15min for a larger order (people are in too much of a hurry these days...slow down people...enjoy life...enjoy the train rumbling on by. Not open for dinner, but I wish they were. Great menu of salads, sandwiches, soups, chili, awesome Sunday breakfast specials (pancakes with fresh fruit toppings, crepes, french toast, frittatas...). Always something interesting to try on the daily specials menu and on their pastry shelf. Baked goods are always coming out of the oven. Just had a crazy good black cherry vanilla scone the other day. Muffins, cakes & pies with seasonal berries, home-made biscotti all super. But the choc cake with p.b icing & their coconut cake are terribly good! I consider myself a baker so wouldn't consider buying dessert to take to a party from anywhere except from here. i am a local resident who has been frequenting the market cafe almost every day since it opened. it started out great. good food, a welcome different fare for the area. it was staffed by mostly mature friendly women who took care and did not not just slap things together. as time went on the owner was there less and less and running the place fell to mostly the cook (who is great) and another person who also did everything he could to keep things going. unfortunately, staffing became a problem, especially in the evening and they had to cut hours. they were eventually staffed by mostly very young people who were neither friendly nor service oriented. gave the impression that they were doing you a big favor by dropping your food on the table. and so the quality of the food went downhill as well....very inconsistent and, as i said "slapped together". you really never knew what you were going to get. i actually had what i know for sure was a frozen tortilla (it was awful)...people don't go there for frozen food. it really did become a not-so-great place but it was at least tolerable and convenient so i kept going. i must say that i have ordered salads and desserts for holiday parties and they were all great, as recently as this past summer. (because, i think, they were prepared by or under the supervision of the cook....not the disinterested kids) . and the chocolate chip cookies are delish. i'm so happy that the main cook will still be there and hopefully she can train the others who do some food prep. and to pay attention to what is ordered. i wish the new owners every good thing. i hope they will demand more from their employees which will only serve to improve the whole business. hopefully it will return to the way it was when it first opened. read more
