While visiting the Smoky Mountains on a family vacation a friend invited me to meet her at Biscuit Festival. I had never been to Knoxville before and didn't know what to expect. I was so pleasantly surprised to stumble across this Farmer's Market. There were so many friendly and awesome local vendors. I didn't end up purchasing anything but my mother bought some asparagus from a vegetable stand, which was incredibly fresh and delicious! The location of this market is perfect, as well, as there are tons of cute local businesses surrounding it. I would definitely recommend The Market to anyone in the Knoxville area on a Saturday. read more

Very cheap, I asked for just a plastic cup and was told I had to pay 1.96 for A PLASTIC CUP no liquid from the store , just a cup. I think that's bullshit and yall are cheap asl for that, the lady said "they'll charge you full price" for a cup im not evening going to use other then for water. It's not abt the 1.96 i can pay that it's the fact yall are that cheap over a literal cup , probably doesn't even cost 1.96 to make it. Great grocery store down in urban Knoxville. Very cool look with reasonable prices. Would recommend to anyone staying in town. I also saw they have a deli section but unfortunately I came when they were closed. read more

A good option for the tourist needing some aspirin or the local needing an onion that they forgot to buy at their last grocery store run. It's got a good selection of deli meats/cheeses and lunch items for downtown workers. Decent bulk foods and snacks galore. You can even get donuts and a fountain drink if that's how you roll. Plus lots of travel size stuff if you're visit g and forgot your toothbrush, etc. You'll also meet some local color, as the indigent community will stop in and hang out asking for spare change. It's a part of the city that is not hidden away, and you get used to seeing each other. Only possible cons are that it doesn't carry better brands for many foods- but I am not the target demographic for the store, so I'm happy to get what I can there. read more

While it's convenient to have a small grocery downtown, the Market's choice to not post prices on items is infuriating. Knowing how much something costs is pretty basic to making purchasing decisions. So you have to bring each item to the cash register, wait in line, and then have the bar codes swiped. One can also suspect surge pricing. Clearly it's a choice and a bad one. read more

I feel like I may be a bit biased when it comes to the 5 star rating since I live downtown, but this place really is amazing. It is located where the General Store used to be. The front of the store has retained the convenience store look and feel, while the back is a mini grocer. The front half contains cigars, junk food, soda fountain, lottery tickets, etc. The back has fresh veggies and fruit, frozen meals, gourmet seasonings and olive oil, and items found in a grocer, but more high end than would be found at a gas station. Now my favorite part about The Market is the beer selection. The have an amazing selection of beers. You can also make your own mixer sixer or fill a growler here. This Market can't hold a candle to the one in Maryville, but out of all the other similar concepts (Just Ripe, Aisle 9, and the Market on Jackson Ave.) this place is by far my favorite. read more

I'm a fan! Prices are a bit higher than your typical mini-mart, but this is about as convenient as you'll get on Gay St. They offer dry goods, prepared food and even some produce. It's a great place to grab a cheap coffee or pick up some work snacks or lunch. It's never crowded here! The candy and soda selections are great for a snack run or smuggling your own treats into a late night movie. ;) read more

IN THE HEART OF THE CITY! In downtown Knoxville on Gay street, you will find this little market. It is actually a market that sells bacon, eggs, produce, sandwiches, trail mix, beverages and other items. We were trying to decide where we should eat dinner but in the mean time, we needed a snack that could hold us over for a while. My husband chose a slushie but I decided to puchase some raw cashews, peanut butter pretzels, and okra chips. This little store offers souvenirs and has several food items that are locally grown and produced. In the rear of the store, we discovered a small deli that is closed on Sundays. If you find yourself sightseeing on Gay street, The Market is a nice place to visit for a quick snack. It is also a necessary stop if you want to grab a snack before heading over to the park. Remember, 3 stars is AOK. And honestly, as of right now The Market at Union and Gay is ok. By no means do I think that it is a bad place. Let me say first of all that I am really pleased to see that Knoxville has gained another grocer, especially for us downtown folk. It is good to know that I have the option to choose from, now, four grocery stores each, individual in their own right. Though I am a vegetarian, I am really impressed with the meat counter. In fact, I was particularly blown away by the excellent customer service I received while trying to select a rib eye steak for my husband. The man and woman working that night are naturals and know their product very well. Really great job you two, you know who you are. Sad to say, I didn't get names. The customer service for the rest of the store though seems a bit confused. The sales people on the floor are way too eager. And the teenagers working the registers are not instilling a lot of confidence in me. I get the feeling that the expectations from management and investors are overruling the otherwise casual but charming service I received from my friends in the back. And If I'm going long with this review it's due to the fact that I worked four years for the 3rd largest Whole Foods Market in the world. Sounds grand but it is true. And let's face it, with the above mentioned alternatives, competition in downtown is fearce. The charm of the Maryville location is lost and the overall schizophrenic feel (convenient store or local gourmet Grocery?) of The Market leaves me wanting more. Do not mistake my criticisms though, I will be back...to the meat counter. read more

If you need water, gum, cigarettes, stale donuts, or some random piece of gourmet candy this is your spot. I think it serves a purpose for a few things, but those were all things available to The General Store (its previous name/profile). Whatever failed when they tried to "Market" the Market, its too bad. There's a lot of wasted potential in terms of offerings, but maybe people weren't ready when they first revamped and had the meat counter, more upscale offerings, etc. read more

Stoped in on my way through knoxville. From the outside it reminds me of a typical new york deli. Charming in a weird way. So I decide to see what treats they keep inside. I walk in only to be yelled at by the lady at the counter about my backpack. There is a policy where all bags must be kept at the door. I tried to comply but the clerk contenued to scream at me about how people like me are the reason the policy is in place. At this point I am finished fooling with this place and remind them i can shop elsewhere. On yelp this business is listed as a farmers market which it is not. Its a typical downtown convenience store with horible staff. In the end I walked up a few more blocks to market square where I found the actual farmers market with much better products and many smiling faces. It's a basic 7/11 type market with a smattering of local items. I was staying downtown and went looking for breakfast food - yogurt and berries. I was able to buy a fresh apple. If you live downtown and want groceries - no luck! read more

We live downtown and often go to the Market to " stock up" on drinks, snacks, etc... why would u limit the purchase of over 9 items to cash only. If u purchase more than 9 items u can not use a credit/ debit card- that's ridiculous. Our purchase was $32 and we bought over 9 items. We had $27 in cash - the cashier was very nice and I went across the street to the ATM to get cash so we could pay. Our cards were declined- the cashier said "it's not your card it's been like that since I worked here" . We want to frequent shops downtown but we will go elsewhere for groceries if it's inconvenient- u can't pay with a bank card? Makes no sense read more

As a former New Yorker, I really appreciate a good deli/bodega and that's exactly what this place is! Their coffee area is pretty plush - they have a couple of different roasts going as well as decaf, cappuccino, and flavor shots and whipped cream if you're into that kind of thing. They also have pre-made breakfast sandwiches, hotdogs, snacks, refrigerated drinks, etc. Pretty sure they also have beer and cigarettes although I'm not usually looking for that during my pre-work coffee run. Went in to get a coffee this morning, the clerk was friendly, yet prompt. At one point during my cash out he sneezed. He not only covered his sneeze properly but paused to thoroughly sanitize his hands, which I REALLY appreciate. Will definitely be back. read more

This is a great market for fruits, assorted snacks, and local/homemade foods. However, I picked up Greek yogurt pretzels and green bean chips from the assorted snacks and both of them tasted very stale. If they weren't only a dollar each, I would have walked back to this Store to return or exchange them. Maybe I chose bad snacks, but it is pretty unlikely that I chose to different snacks that were both stale. read more

I really like the selection and prices in the market. I don't understand the whole "no using outside cups" for drinks policy though. I don't care if they charge me for 2 brand new coffees if I want to put it in my Yeti tumbler what is the big deal? Seems really wasteful to have to put coffee in the paper cups from the store when I'm just going to pour it into my own cup as soon as I leave and chuck the store cup in the trash. I work on Gay Street and every employee I have asked about it gives the same reply "it's company policy". So, company, what's the deal? read more

Sad to say...the meat counter is gone. We must travel to Maryville for the best baseball-size meatballs on Earth. It's worth it. 90% of this store keeps offering great service & products and we are grateful. Affordable fruit, veggies, gourmet selections, and even $8 growler refills of several brews. All good. Nice offerings that complement what Just Ripe offers just two blocks away. Open 7 days a week and always convenient for many of us here in downtown Knoxville. read more

When I first moved to downtown two years ago, I used to come in all the time! Then I noticed the quality started slipping...they didn't replenish some staples, sold old (way over ripe) vegetables and fruits. Now I just go here when I'm in need of a diet coke. It had so much potential, but sadly it's on a downward spiral. read more
