My wife and I are in our mid-80s, with no native Asian heritage. I do all the grocery shopping and most of the cooking. I've cooked Chinese style for more than 50 years. And being an Army brat (and Army veteran) helps. And I love the Sunrise Supermarket - I've shopped there every week or two since they opened. I buy a lot of fish at the fish counter, and never had a bad experience with their fish (of course, I know how to buy fish, and occasionally I need to speak a little Spanish, which I can). The produce section is wonderful. I wish I knew how to cook a tenth of what they sell in that store! In contrast to what several reviewers have said, I've never experienced or observed any discourtesy to anyone. Sure, there are occasional difficulties in communication, with so many nationalities represented, but that's part of the fun of it. I fairly often want a Chinese item that doesn't have a satisfactory English name, so I find the Chinese characters on the Web and print them out, and find somebody in the store who can read Chinese, and promptly am led to what I want. (I just discovered sha cha sauce that way.) Checking my shopping list now - sesame oil, some fresh squid to stir-fry and a pompano to steam, some frozen Chinese dumplings, a bottle of nước mắm, a bag of bean sprouts, a Mexican squash. When I walked in this place does stink because they have seafood in the back. Some of the employees were very grumpy, avoid people, not helpful. I was hoping that they would have mangosteen fruit, but they didn't. They did have other Asian fruits though. Some of the things that I purchased was: edamame, tapioca pearls, popping boba, mini eggplant, seaweed etc. They are s pretty good size store. It was my first visit to the Asian supermarket. This is a very large supermarket. I went there looking for whole dragon fruit. They had exactly what I was looking for, and they also had several different kinds. I also took a quick look around the store. There is so much in there. You don't know where to start and where to stop. This store is very laid back and all of the staff I came in contact with were very nice and extremely helpful. I bought a big bag of red rice that had bugs in it. I open the bag and little spiders started to escape. I close the bag real quick and threw it away right away. They would not give me a refund because I did not have the receipt or the rice. The India Market on Downtown blvd is much better, friendlier, and cleaner. read more

I went there because there's no Asian stores anywhere around us. I wanted a "supermarket" like I went to in ATL. This was it. They have everything you can think of, and more! I went up to the checkout thinking I got bargains and spent waay more money than I anticipated, but that's because I kept saying, "ooooh! I wanna try this!" haha I wish there was a place to learn how to use/make the fruits/veggies & meats they use. I would take it in a second. Some things I have no idea how they taste, nor how to prepare, so I was afraid to buy it. But they have everything. Even the viral ice creams and stuff. It's def a foreign store environment and not like a regular grocery store like Publix/Kroger/Food City, etc., so don't expect it to be spotless, organized and smell great. But it is clean. There's just SOOO much to look at. The people were nice & helpful to me/us. We had no problem communicating except for "amounts/size/weight" type of things. Other than that, they were more than willing to explain and help. I can't wait to go back. It's over an hour drive for me, but it's worth it. read more

I was thoroughly impressed with Sunrise Market and am already planning the list for my next visit there. Like most markets of this kind, it's packed to the brim with product so it's a little overwhelming and perhaps easy to overlook items your first trip around the store, but there is a very large variety of fresh produce/meat, dried/canned/frozen foods, sauces, spices, snacks, etc. They have a good size section of home/cooking goods as well. I had a list of Japanese pantry staples to grab while I was there and I was able to get everything I was looking for. Can't wait to go back soon. read more

There are so many options for sauces, curries, noodles, etc. They even have a lot of cool bowls and kitchen things. A little lazy? They have frozen items for steamers or microwaves too. Crazy as ever! We came to grab some groceries for hot pot since our local place closed during COVID and there were so much people! It's very nice to see Sunrise busy since it's a large hub for people in Knoxville to find their Asian groceries. We were pleasantly surprised that they started adding spice walls as well for a lot of Hispanic food that we wanted to try making, but couldn't due to the lack of ingredients. I was very happy to share my opinion about different hot pot spices that I have tried from Sunrise with a group of people that were wondering which ones to try since some of their friends have never had it before. It's always nice to chat with other customers, but the staff there is nice too. They get really busy, but we never have to spend too much time waiting for a register to open. I don't mind what other people say about the cleanliness since I grew up around asian markets in big cities and it just kind of is what it is. They're smaller business from your Target's, Kroger's, or Publix. They don't have the man power to wash everything down with chemicals every other hour, BUT they do provide ingredients that you otherwise wouldn't be able to find. Wonderful selection! Horrible staff the stocker smack his his lips and granted because we said excuse me so we can get passed him. Not just that he just kept standing there until I repeated it. When checking out asked the young lady how much she just looked at me and pointed at the screen clearly she can talk because she spoke yo the person after us. Not to be confused with when I Twerk (Bunrise) or when you Twerk (Moonrise), or when Bill Murray Twerks (Moonrise Kingdom). This Asian supermarket in the tiny little pocket of the Chinatown of Knoxville is pretty cool! Some of their fruits are not as ripe and enjoyable as they should be - but then that could be said about your mother as well. They used to have Bubble Tea in here at which point it was a 5-star grocery store but I've reduced it because they got rid of the bubble tea. read more

So I'm from Houston and so I have a very high expectation of asian food, asian grocery stores, etc. I was worried when I first went here that there were not many asian grocery stores in this area and so there would be a small selection for me to choose from. However it has everything you would ever need: from your veggies, sauces, ramen, meats. Everything was clean (or as clean as you can get in an asian grocery store). I decided to visit Sunrise Market because I've started to really enjoy coconut water. In particular, I like the "young Thai coconut" that's cut and wrapped up. You'll see this variety at natural juice shops and it's the source of all the various processed coconut water. Anyway, Sunrise had the coconuts for $2.5/each. Not a bad price. However, when I went to buy them, it rang up as $2.99. After I pointed out the difference, they immediately gave me the right price. That said, I'd watch how things are priced here. Other than the coconut, Sunrise has a ton of produce, frozen food, seafood, meats, and rice. It's a fairly large store. You'll find plenty of interesting and odd items that you won't see elsewhere. I give it three stars for the price issue and also because the store didn't have as welcoming of an atmosphere as other places. read more

Lived in South Korea for 14 months years ago and frequented the outdoor market in Tageau. This place brings back memories! Only place I can find lychee, great kimche, seaweed, best selection in Knoxville for Rice and sold in 10, 25, and 50 pound bags. Great selection of Asian spices and teas. Their Asian dishes, mainly for sauces and rice bowls, are really nice. I have a kitchen drawer full I've collected over the years. I wish they could expand and bring in even more of the Asian culture. Knoxville needs it. This is my favorite treat to stop in when I'm in West Knoxville. (I live in Grainger county) read more

I came here recently to get just a couple of items. I've been here several times and well, I've always found what I wanted. This time, I was craving a little Kim Chee and I needed a mixer for my Soju. Yep. I was making Yogurt Soju, and was it the best ever. This is a typical Asian Grocery Market. The smell reminds me of the markets back in Charlotte. You know, the ones that smell of fish and seafood in the back, mixed in with all the boxed goodies and then you have your fresh tofu mixed into all of that mix? And perhaps, you are looking for some Asian Medicine? Well, I believe that they have that as well. Or wait! You need something to cook all of the things you're going to buy here in. Well, to your surprise they have some Cookware as well. Yeah, typical Asian Markets. Sauces, Seafood, Food, Vegetables, Frozen foods, the list goes on and on. For me it was pretty simple. I knew where the Kim Chee was (I've been here a couple of times already) and all I needed was to help find the frozen yogurt dessert. The lady was nice and pointed me to where it was. (I had to ask twice, but she pulled me to it eventually) But my goal was accomplished. Dirty and rude. When they sell produce or meats that, when you take them home, you find out are spoiled or older than they should be, the owner there will fight you to return and refund. This review is for the boba (which they only serve on weekends). There isn't really any good boba in Knoxville, but I think this is decent. Doesn't compare to what I've had in CA when there's up to 5 boba shops in the same plaza. I had a honeydew black tea, no milk. Boba was chewy, which I like. Tea tasted like a powder mix.. I asked for no milk, but the color definitely looked milky. Either that or the powder made it milky? I could barely taste the tea flavor. But I mean, if I were craving boba in Knoxville, I'd go here to fulfill the craving. read more

Every time I come here, it seems like they get worse and worse. But I still come here when I'm in the area because it's the only real Asian Market in the area. It's sad cause I remember years ago when it had so much "life"! Now it's just a shell of what it used to be... literally. A shell with items for sale inside. Everybody who works there with the exception of maybe 3-4 appears as though they hate it there. No interaction whatsoever between employee/customer unless we initiate it. And now, only towards the weekend do they have the freshest stuff. It's like they don't even care anymore. Not that I'm blaming them, since I can't even imagine how mentally and physically draining it is to run a supermarket... but still, I can wish that it would one day return to its former glory. This is an amazing Asian market gem in Knoxville, TN. When you walk in you immediately see their vast produce selection. Great prices on produce and herbs. Their meat selection was a bit questionable what ethnic meat market isn't. Moving here from Hawaii I did not have high expectations for finding sauces, noodles, drinks or seasonings but this market was impressive with their wide selections across various Asian cultures. Their noodle aisle impressed me the most. Of course canned and imported products are pricier than I'm used to but that's ok, i appreciate what this market is doing to bring in variety. read more
