Took the Introduction to Handguns course with wife and son today. Was well run and lead by three very experienced instructors. Neither my son nor wife had previously shot a gun. By the time we moved into the range, they were both comfortable handling guns and shot a 45, 9mm, 38 and 22. The course is NRA certified and I would highly recommend this to any first time gun owner to take with family members. Thanks for a very positive experience. read more

This is the only range in the area that charges a $10 one-time safety fee, their wait-times are long with no way of reserving before coming down, they don't allow for quotes over the phone, staff isn't the friendliest or professional. If you are coming to purchase a weapon, expect a wait before you're help, and their prices are barely average. Great selection of firearms. The range is ok. That's about it. Definitely not impressed with the arrogance of costumer service that is provided. I was purchasing a firearm, and wanted to inspect it myself. They didn't let me nor the guy didn't do it for me. All he did is assured me that it's a "good gun". Enamored with the firearm I bought it. Waited the time period, Got the gun, took it home and inspected it. Found out that the gun was used NOT NEW as sales men said to me. Called back, I told them and I was told all sales are final. That's the reason why I give this a 1 star. To whoever is thinking about buying from them, I urge you to go somewhere else. Not a good choice if you want to transfer in a pistol or rifle. The customer service rep. fumbled around with my dust cover for quite some time trying to put it back on after he inspected and dropped it twice. Then dry fires my classic Polytech right in front of me... They sale me protective Snap caps but dry fire classic arms transferred in. Also a $50 transfer fee is not very competitive at all. I use Surplus and Ammo for those services now. Now they do have a couple good points, the indoor pistol range is decent and they have a good gunsmith that does some pretty good quality work. I'd rate 2.5 stars if it were a option. read more

My major complaint with this outfit is their fone access. I note that one reviewer called them on the fone. That will never happen again. Their telephone tree is relentless. You will never hear a human voice. They are usually busy and the counter guys (no women, possibly a problem right there) don't have much time for the milk of human kindness. I'm retired military and everytime I go in there I am appalled at the obvious "nobody in charge" atmosphere in this clusterfuck of a business place. I have purchased several firearms from this retailer. The staff is knowledgeable, and decent sales folks who don't badger or push for a sale. It can get crowded on the weekends. I have used their firing range several times in years past. Very nice with electronic target hangers adjustable close or far. The only thing I don't like is the "Paid" safety training. If it is your first time to the range,.. or even if you've been there several times in years past, you have to get a range card, which costs 10 dollars,.. and up to 40 minutes or so when it's busy. The actual safety class is maybe 15 minutes, but they like to wait until they have at least 3 or 4 people. All this is understandable, and I'm all for safety,.. I just don't think it should be bought or sold. And as a customer who regularly purchases firearms from them, I do not believe that they should charge for loyal customers. Make sure we and the people around us are safe on the range,.. no problem. But don't overcharge me for crappy range ammo, and then charge me 10 bucks to go through a safety class that I have been through multiple times. Either way, I do not use their range anymore because of this,.. but I do still pick up firearms from them. I like the staff, and I try my best to support Firearms dealers in the area so that they will be in business for years to come. With the advent of online wholesalers it is tough to beat online pricing, even after shipping and transfer fees,.. If it is 20 to 30 bucks higher at the Marksman, I will buy it here to support local dealer's. Beyond that I am beginning to feel ripped off. I'm talking same item online, that I paid 25 dollars to ship, and 25 dollars to transfer, and they are still 100 bucks over that total price. In any event, i like the store and staff,.. and with my CCW, I regularly walk in and 40 minutes later, walk out with a handgun. You just can't do that with the internet. read more

I don't know why so many of these reviews are so bad. I went in today to use the range. My first time there and also my first time shooting my sig p238. Both of the guys at the range counter were really friendly and helpful. I actually liked that they do the introduction class. I didn't mind paying for it since it wasn't expensive and they only do it if it is your first time at that range. I was told that if I needed anything at all then to just come back in and they would be happy to help me. I also really like that the pass is good all day so even if you need to leave to do something you can come back without having to pay a second time. I was a bit put off by the reviews but decided to go anyways and see for myself. I'm glad I did. I will definitely go back. read more

I have been going to Marksman for some time and use their range a lot. I find the employees very helpful .... they not their to shoot the shit ... it is a range. Their range is well lit and ventilated ...not sure where the ventilation issues are coming from ???? I have additionally purchased a number of handguns there and they have been most professional. Their prices are OK but must importantly, you can probably rent the gun you are interested in purchasing ... Wednesday is free rental ... just purchase their ammo. There are pluses and minuses when discussing the Marksman. The pluses: 1)Good selection of guns for sale. 2)Great range specials. 2 for 1 Monday. On Wednesday you can shoot any or all of the shop owned handguns for $12. Great for testing different guns and calibers. Big selection to choose from. You have to buy the ammo, of course. 3)Most of the staff is knowledgeable. I think they have made a solid effort to improve customer service. This place does big business, so it can be swamped at times. The minuses: 1)Sometimes you will still have a BS session slowing things down, but it is getting better. 2)The range itself. Small range, 50 feet. Poor acoustics. If someone is firing a hand cannon next to you, you better wear ear plugs under your hearing protection. The lighting is poor. You have to position your target where the light is good. I would really like to see them improve the range a little. Not much they can do about the size, but a few more lights and some acoustic foam would work wonders. read more

I shot @ the range here 09/29/2011. My experience was good. I have been around guns since I was born, handling them since I was 4. I had no problem sitting through their safety orrientation. I basically knew all the rules and safety concerns, but did not feel the instructor was talking down to me, or trying to make me feel like a newbie. The range itself is better than the other major range available in downtown Tacoma in that it had better lighting, although the lane booth itself was a little underlit for me and my eyesight, I had trouble seeing my sights in that particular lighting, but overall lighting was better than that "other" range. Ventilation appeared to be fine, but there were only two or three other lanes shooting at the time, so I have no idea how it is during heavy use. I brought my own everything.....targets, ammo, ear/eye protection. Did NOT have to pay any "ammo surcharge" like "the other" range requiring you to buy their overpriced, "cheap" and DIRTY (Blazer)ammo. I will definetely be shooting here again. My ONLY complaint was there could be more wall between lane tables....I was showered continually with 9mm shells being ejected from the lane to my left.......I am NOT much of a fan of hot brass down the neck of my shirt......especially while I am trying to concentrate on my sights and target. Over all....a good experience for me. read more

This is the first indoor shooting range in WA I've been to that requires a mandatory first-time safety and rules course which adds an additional $10-15 charge and takes about 5-10min. The class itself is a nice refresher even for those who are familiar with firearms and regulations. The range itself was freezing cold with a ventilation system that was constantly on. Not the best, not the worst. There are better options if you are interested in purchasing a firearm or wish to complete an FFL transfer. Good selection. Overpriced. Customer service is hit or miss, though it has seemed to improve over the last few years. The indoor range is adequate and if you are on the fence about a purchase, they do offer a good selection of rentals to assist in your decision. I recently took a class at this location and wanted to say the class was great. It was a lot of fun and very informative. The instructors are really nice and personable and have a lot of really good advice. I will be returning to take more classes in the future and returning just to practice on my own. Something I was unaware of until we finished up, if you take the class range time is already paid for, for the remainder of the day. The range itself is pretty chilly so I'd probably bring a jacket next time. But it was really helpful and I already feel a lot more confident about owning and carrying myself. You can do all the research and watch all the YouTube videos in the world, but if you don't take any classes you risk injury and misuse to yourself and all those around you. It's really really easy to get a CPL in Wa. Be responsible and sign up for classes on your own! read more

I've been going to the Marksman for the last decade and purchased 12 firearms from them in that time. I can say that their service has really gone downhill in the past few years. Nowadays it's very difficult to get service from anyone because the three people usually working in the store are bullshitting with each other by the register. Their phone system is absolutely terrible. As is their policy of not being helpful on the telephone and telling you a price for firearms. I can see why they don't want to tell you prices however because they've taken the approach of the cable company and decided that they can charge whatever the hell they want once they get you in the store. That is a very terrible approach to have these days with the internet and gun auction websites. I found the prices to be a mixed bag, high volume pistols priced ok, everything else is priced several hundred dollars higher than you can find elsewhere. The employees are generally unknowledgeable about firearms, with the exception of the Asian gentleman. He's always been very helpful over the years. There are two women who work there, God help you if they're the only people around to help, both are incredibly inattentive and rude. I think the blond is the owners wife as she generally has a gaggle of children that she brings in that take up space while you're trying to look at items or cash out. She has quite a chip on her shoulder and I suspect the decline in service is directly related to her increased involvement. This business is very clearly not aimed at servicing the customer. As such I will no longer do business with them. It's too painful considering that there are great options like the Sportsmans Warehouse in Puyallup that is very friendly. Part of the problem is the attitude of "We're the Professionals" because they teach firearms training to Armored car and Security Companies in the area. So they talk down to everyone. Which is a mistake. Someone like myself who actually does use a firearm in the course of their duties and has received special weapons training and has range privileges on the police range doesn't really need your attitude. It's sad but I expect them to go out of business, it would have happened sooner but the Obama scare propped them up. That said, if you know nothing about firearms and if you bow to gunshop wisdom from someone who has never been shot at It's probably an ok experience, If you can get their attention on the sales floor. I bought a 1911A1 I had been going to Wades Eastside as they are close to home. Never again after going out to the Marksman. I dropped my rifle off to the gunsmith two weeks before elk season. He was going to troubleshoot it and said he would give me a call. I tried to get a hold of him numerous times over the next several weeks but was unable to reach him (as his voicemail was full). When I finally go ahold of him he assured me it would be ready for late buck. However when I went to pick it up he said he hadn't gotten to it yet. Finally TODAY he called me and said he was unable to get it apart so I had to take it to the service rep!!!! He had my rifle for over 6 weeks to finally tell me he couldn't take it apart. When you walk in most of the employees do their best to avoid eye contact with you so they will not have to help. They have a tall black guy that works there, I once asked to see a firearm I was planning on purchasing that day; he just looked at the floor and laughed. When you do manage to get one to talk to you they are very condescending. Lord help you if you actually ask a question. They also seem to like to push brands. I recently moved to the area ( I have gone to the shop about a dozen times). Went in, signed up for the range. Their "safety class" teaches you nothing. Nor do they seem to enforce any of their rules. Other people have complained about the air quality. Its an indoor range, it is what you would get just about anywhere else. Your shooting in a confined space people! I managed to talk to talk to the manager once. I made a comment about how this fall should have some pretty great sales. His response in essence told me I was an idiot and while I was responding to him he just walked away. It was a bit like dealing with a seven year old who knows what they just said was wrong and doesn't want to own up to it. If you need a gun in south hill and can't travel anywhere else you'd be better served at Sportsmens warehouse on meridian. If you need a range there is a gun club a mile or two down the road from the marksman. Prices are better there actually. If you want to walk in, point out what you want and do the paper work, there is nothing wrong with them. If you want a bit more to be part of the experience as most gun enthusiasts do, go elsewhere. I will not go back. I've found the drive to Bullseye in Tacoma is quite worth it. read more

I went into the store to buy a Sparrow 22 silencer. I got a quote for under $400.00 from Silercerco on the internet. They said they couldn't match the price and they wanted $500.00 They said that they would charge me $50.00 for the actual transfer of a 6 oz. Silincer and another $150.00 for making out the transfer forms. They stated it took a lot of time to do that and I was welcome to call around and find a lower price if I wanted to. So I did. I called Rainier Arms in auburn and they said they could sell the Sparrow to me directly for $400.00 and there would be no holding or transfer of arms charges. I paid them $438 including tax for the Sparrow and they completed all the paper work for me in less than an hours time, even sending the $200.00 money order to BATF. I was told they would contact me in 2 to 4 months as soon as my trust was approved. Told there was no more fees or anything I had to complete or do. Seems I saved $50.00 + $150 fees and another extra $100.00 for the Sparrow by going to Rainier Arms. read more

When you try and work with them over the phone and get a price quote they completely refuse and state it is "because all their competitors call daily to try and pricematch which takes away from helping customers." I went in because the site said they had the gun I want, I stood around for 10 minutes waiting for someone, then when I finally got to talk to someone, they didn't know where the Sig's were in the store, and wouldn't look anything up on the computer to see if they even had the gun in the store. So I went and looked trying to find the gun, couldn't see it in any of the cases, and then proceeded to wait around for another 30 minutes while the staff helped every customer who came in after me, before me. I've been going to this place for years now. Lately the rage is staffing the place entirely with women. That's all find and dandy if the ladies working the counter had better customer service. The two that I dealt with while trying to purchase a product acted as if they had something to prove because they worked at a gun range. I am a former Military Police officer, I am a Washington State certified handgun and shotgun instructor, I've worked in gun ranges before and I've been around this trade my whole life. Being a female customer at a range does not mean you are noob right off the bat. One such employee didn't even get off her chair to assist the other employee who was obviously new. I was totally put out by the service I received and won't be back for awhile. This place has some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I inherited three firearms from a family member and had them transferred in from a different state. When I first asked about the transfer process I was basically only given a price, no specific about the process. When I was ready to begin the transfer, an employee just gave me some forms, wrote the price on them, and told me to go home and fill them out on my own. When I returned the next day, the same employee accused me of writing the price on the forms!! He claimed it wasn't his hand writing and he would not have written the price on the forms. Yeah right, I told him I stood there the day before and watched him do it. So, finally had the guns in transit, and upon arrival I received no notification. I had to find out from UPS that they had been delivered on a Friday, before noon. I called Friday evening and the employee on the phone couldn't even be bothered to check if they had actually arrived. He then proceeded to tell me that they never go into a weekend without processing received firearms, so I should get a call that evening. No one ever called me. I went in on Friday night and an employee verified they had been received, but then told me the lady who does the processing had gone home and that I should get a call the next day. Again, no one called me. I waited all Saturday and all Sunday (mind you they are open seven days a week) and still no call. Then I went in again on Monday and the employees acted like I was burdening them by asking about MY guns. Another employee then told me they don't have "office" staff on the weekends so no one had "processed" my guns. And a side note about the "processing," I asked three different employees what this "processing" involved, and all three said they had no idea what they do "upstairs." What kind of place are these people running?? I would highly suggest going somewhere else for any firearm needs. This place treats you like a piece of $h1t unless you're wearing a badge. read more

Good prices, ample ammo choices (even the ever elusive .380), really helpful and friendly staff, lots of guns to choose from or rent, nice stalls to shoot in don't freak out when you conceal carry in their store, and they have good deals on range fees. How do you rate a place with so many components to consider? Selection is four stars. I would almost say five, but they sometimes don't have items in yet that other places in the area do. Staff is probably four. While I have not purchased anything other than accessories here, they have always been more than helpful when I've browsed. I have to give prices three stars. The prices are about $50 higher on the items I've looked at compared to others in the area. The Range I have to give two stars. It is poorly lit, and in need of repair. I used to shoot here all the time from 1988-1991, then I moved. they were great. prices good and friendly. I moved back and came in last year. I said I use to come here all the time but lost my card, they asked for name and phone and I said I do not remember the phone # from way back so they looked up my name and said I have never been in? what's the difference? So I took the class and got some ammo and targets, boy has the prices gone up! the rules have changed, and I was asked to remove my shoulder holster for a gun I was not shooting because the revolver does not point down. I always carry a gun that I do not shoot when shooting. Its for self defense and I always keep a holstered loaded weapon, I understand we must follow the rules but I did not see this rule posted any place and the way I was told was rude. Also No double taps. I have never had to wait for a lane so this is a plus. The price for the lane is great. That's why I keep coming back, I just buy my ammo and targets someplace else. (I found my old range card tucked in my gun tool kit, I was going to show it to them last time to show I really did use to come here but why bother. Bottom line, Cheap Range Time, No Waiting Most Times, Expensive ammo, Expensive Targets, Expensive Weapons, No rapid fire, No Double Tap. So bring your own jacketed ammo and targets, Glasses and hearing protection. Good Shooting. read more

Been here three times and I will say I enjoyed the staff and shooting range. I haven't been to the other ones because this play has the best deals. They have daily specials for the shooting range. One time fee for "all" handgun rental. WOW! Haven't been to a gun range that did this. Good range of brands and calibers for shooting. They got like 6 or 8 lanes of shooting so lots of space. Their attire of handguns is massive too for a small gun. Not to many special guns but that's not their aim. How ever they over the same options as most guns shops and take in orders and such. First off I need to say that my fiance was very excited to purchase a Ruger Mini 14 for me for an engagement gift. I love the gun but have major issues with where she purchased it. It sounded like she got good customer service from the guy she originally sold her the gun (prob cause she hadn't paid for it yet). I removed the gun from the box and pulled the contents out. I didn't really mess with the extras as I didn't know what everything was for. There was a picatinny rail to go over the ejector in case you don't want to use the factory scope rings for Ruger. I went to a reputable sporting good shop to buy a nice Nikon scope and went home to install it, thinking I may use the factory rings. When i opened the package for the rings, 3 screws were missing and someone put 2 wrong screws in place of the others. All this has taken place in less than 24 hours mind you. My fiance and I drove to the Marksman to have them fix this problem (3 missing screws) no big deal right? You would think but I dealt with this Russian guy, who was less than polite from the get go. He then looked at the package and said how do I know you didn't do this? I laughed and said I literally just opened the package like 40 minutes ago from the box we received from your store. He then said this is strange, Ruger doesn't make mistakes like this and the distributor doesn't have time to either, so again accusing my the paying customer of doing this. He then said that his his gunsmith has some extra screws that he would just eat the cost which should be pennies in my opinion. He left for about 15 minutes, came back with the appropriate screws then told us we have two choices, 1 send the product back and have Ruger replace them or I could purchase the 4 screws, 3 of which I only needed, for 20 bucks!!! I looked up the screws on Ruger's website and Amazon and they were 5.99-8.99, so now he has accused me 3 times of doing this to the rings, lied about eating the cost of the rings and is wanting to over charge me for some small screws!!! Give me a product not complete, try to embarrass me in the store by blaming me, then tried to rip me off?? Wow! Then i told him that this will be the last purchase I would ever make in this store, also 2 of my buddies are looking and I was sending them to the Marksman, one buying a 3k SCAR and the other a Benelli shot gun, both have now purchased from other dealers. I would NEVER buy from these guys again, not even a box of bullets. I have many friends in the area who are avid hunters and sport shooters and they will all hear and see this review as well. I have an Springfiled XD 45 Compact 4". I went to the Marksman to find a holster for it. When I walked in I was one of 3 people in the store and yet they seemed to busy to help me. I finally had someone welcome me and ask me if I need anything. I told them what I was looking for and they showed me the 3 options they had for my gun. I decided to purchase the $72.99 leather belt holster that sits on side behind your hip on the back. I the next day I tried the holster and it was to uncomfortable for me to use. I decided to return it and try another one. I didn't think this would be a problem since they had a huge sign under the counter that said "You must have your receipt to return or exchange and item". Little to my surprise I was met with a 15% restocking fee when I decided to exchange the holster. The person helping me told me that if I exchanged it I could avoid the fee. I said sure I would like to try another holster. The person treated me like an idiot for not knowing what holster I wanted and then in the very next breath said that it takes a long time to find the right holster. I finally leave with the new holster and again it was very uncomfortable. I took note of the other holster that they offered and went to The Sportsman ***** (I give The Sportsman a 5 star rating) to see if they had a bigger selection and sure enough they did. They had over 8 different holsters for my gun. I ended up buying one there returning it, with no questions or restocking fee, bought another one and that's the one I use today! It's supper comfortable and fits me well. I decided to take the holster that I purchased from The Marksman and return it since it didn't work for me. I knew that I would have to pay the restocking fee of 15% but I thought that I might be able to trade for ammo or something I might use so that I didn't throw away $10. As expected I was met with an attitude and when I asked if they would wave the restocking fee because the ammo they were selling was almost double what you could buy it at Bull's Eye or The Sportsman. The math didn't add up, I was going to loose less by taking the restocking fee. I'm very disappointed with the service and the attitude that I was faced with, the manager or owner said that this is exactly why they have a restocking fee so that people like me don't rent stuff from them. Approximately 30 minutes later I received a call from Jeff (the sales rep) and he said he was sorry but he gave me the wrong price on the gun. I was told that I had two choices..1) pay the $50 difference in price or 2) receive a refund. Needless to say, I got a refund. These people were clearly price-gouging me. When they gave me the two choices I wanted to compromise and split the $50 with them...no deal! Beware of this company. read more
