Wow what a cool place. They were very very busy the Soccer game was on, and the fans love it. Was really a great vibe. We walked in, we're told we can sit anywhere. We found a great table. Our server Julia showed up soon after, and we ordered drinks and food. Julia brought us everything we needed. Shes a nice lady, very friendly. I had a great time. Great food. We ordered; Shepards pie, that came with a nice salad, and Beef Stew, it came with bread. I liked both a lot but if I go back I think my fav was the stew. Very weird vibes on a recent night when I stopped by for the first time. I had high hopes for another watering hole option in San Rafael but the bright lights, blaring UFC fight broadcast and a very vocal fan bellowing at every blow, I quickly concluded this place is not my jam. The bar needed cleaning as there were several dirty glasses and dishes piling up. That said, the bartender was friendly and the buffalo wings that others ordered looked very good. The bangers and mash are amazing. The banger (sausage) is perfectly cooked--it has a casing that pops when you cut it or bite it, and the sausage stuffing is actually fluffy instead of sense. Do not go here, the blonde, middle aged, 100% Irish (with an Irish passport!) bartender won't serve you if you ask for an Irish car bomb on Saint Patrick's day. We had absolutely no clue it was offensive. She could have nicely taught us something, but instead told us to leave. The next bar we went to, we carefully asked for an Irish Slammer ... and the bartender said "you mean an Irish car bomb"? HAHA! This level of customer service at the mayflower should not be tolerated. If you're a bartender and willing to speak to INNOCENT, paying customers this way, you should probably get fired. read more

Ok... went in for lunch, thinking that a nice plate of fish and chips would hit the spot. Uh, yeah it did. Two HUGE pieces of battered cod on a generous pile of fries, next to a green salad was more than enough to satisfy. The cod had a good batter on it, not too thick, so there was plenty of cod in there. The fries were nicely seasoned, and the salad was a nice light accompaniment, better than the coleslaw a lot of places serve. Fish was greasy and tasteless. Chips were old and over cooked. Salad boring. Took almost a half hour to get and I was the one of only a few people there. Way over priced! $22! Over the past 10 years, I have been coming here (not often maybe 5-6 times a year) for lunch. Never had anything bad to say. However on my last visit, for my birthday, my adult kids took me here for my birthday dinner. It was a Thursday night, and when we walked in the place, it was so loud and nearly full. We decided to sit by the door, where we could actually talk to each other without yelling. After sitting there for 15 minutes, I decided to go look for a waitress. We ordered our food and it took nearly 30 minutes to get our orders. My chips were already cool, not hot. The fish batter was thick and greasy, way over done, and not hot. My daughter ordered the same and said she couldn't eat her fish, too greasy, not hot, but also cool (not cold). I can't remember what my son had. I felt bad for my daughter because it was her that suggested bringing me here for my birthday dinner. When we finished, I had to go look for our waitress and ask her for the bill. It was way too much for the quality of food we were served. I think I'll stick to the lunch time. read more

I waited almost 30 minutes to be served, despite a relatively empty bar and multiple respectful prompts/nods to the bartender. I had to befriend the guy next to me who asked for me to be served once they helped him. After that bartender took off to do some other work, the next one who helped me was absolutely shitfaced. I watched her nearly knock a bottle off the back bar, misplace a cap to the point she needed someone to point it out for her (it was sitting on the top bar in front of me,) and nearly fall over herself serving. As a former bartender and manager I respectfully flagged down a self important looking gentleman, who I believed to be the manager. I asked him if he was and he said no, but asked me what was wrong. I told him the bartender who was serving me was drunk off her ass. He immediately became defensive and asked me who I was. I told him it's not really his business, I just wanted to make sure he knew. He told me I was welcome to leave, so I said okay, I paid my bill (with some effort given how drunk the bartender was) and walked out. As a visitor I'm highly disappointed. I just adore this bar. The atmosphere is home away from home, and the staff are fantastic (and they tend to stick around which tells you something.) I love a people's bar, but I especially come when I want comfort food. It's so much better than the same trendy food you can get anywhere. I especially love their fries; the baked beans; the sausage rolls; and the beef stew. I haven't tried the pot pie yet but I've heard it's fantastic. Finally, the owner Tony is a real gem. Recently visited the mayflower over the weekend, Poko, Ashley and Cameron all greeted me with warmth and compassion as soon as i entered the bar and reached the bar top. The fish and crops were really crispy and great. I also got the basil dressing for the salad, OMG so good. Glad I went with that dressing cause I also used it to dip my fries. The lemonade that they have on their menu is so amazing. I wasn't too sold on it at first, but once I tried it, I realized that it wasn't extremely sweet which made it even better. I love The Mayflower. It literally feels like something out of Cheers where everyone knows everyone and you feel like you fit right in. It is such a great neighborhood spot. I would give zero stars if I could. My husband ordered fish and chips and I ordered fried fish tacos. First off we waited a long time for our food and once we finally got it there were many issues: my "crispy" fish was soggy and tasteless and the taco shells were wet and soggy too. Not ok! The chips were stale as if they had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. I also got a soda with lime that tasted like the bottom of a dirty sink. I let our waitress know about the quality of our food and drink and I expected her to at least comp the tacos but NO! She comped the $3 soda and nothing else!! I was shocked and should have said something but I didn't. We paid the $50 bill and did not leave a tip. I also have a stomach ache from the small amount I ate. Weekdays it's usually quiet and I had cozy table in shade of building with fresh flowers. I was a man on a mission for fish and chips and chose blue cheese for salad dressing. I hate French fries that wiggle or fish cooked poorly. The fish was perfect with crusty coating that lasted whole meal. Same for fries (chips) crisp outside to the last and tasty inside. A small green salad came along. The 2 pieces of fish I had were huge. It was yummy cod and cooked perfect. However, I think cutting each piece in half would be easier to eat and result in more yummy coating. Service was friendly and efficient.
