We love Tam Commons. Great bartenders, great staff, great location, and it's so much fun! This is our go to bar! They always have a great rotation of beer. They just updated their food menu (which we love)! First time visiting this place , it was a Sunday evening. Ordered my hard cider & was enjoying the space w a friend. The establishment states that it is open until 2200 on Sundays so I ordered my second drink to be indirectly at 2143 asked to leave by turning all the lights off because we were the only two people left & staff was basically waiting for us to leave. Third visit and first review- first visit was for a farewell party, 2nd and 3rd visits were with a friend. Neither of us drink so I can't say much about the beer but it seems like they have a full array and the bar is pretty nice. The service is interesting... all three visits I felt like I was interrupting their day or maybe they're having too much fun and can't be bothered by patrons. It's cold and curt. The food is sub par. Chicken popcorn was ok, nachos had zero flavor. Zero. How is that even possible?! My friend's pulled pork Sando was decent but he added " it's the only one around so not much to compare it to". Ok, this is my third review of Tam. Since I moved to San Rafael in May of 2023 this has become my go to always spot. Not sure about those 3.5 stars. The staff here is amazing! Bartenders, Paige, Ian, Matt, Gabby, Day, Thomas. The utmost customer service. A plethora of choices for the brew that suits you best can be found here. I pair my Mind Circus Hazy with their Mexican Street Dog ( Mission Dog ) with all the fixins'. The Service brings me back and the staff is welcoming. Their patio is a hit so sit back and people watch to your hearts content. You can bring your pooch to the patio and they'll treat them like family as well. There are plenty of places in Marin to grab a cold one but I'm willing to bet that you can't get the same service and selection as Tam Commons in San Rafael. read more

Had a fun outdoor happy hour gathering here a few Fridays ago. The food was good; tried their burgers, popcorn chicken and fries. The pretzel with cheese looked good but I didn't personally taste it. There are heaters outside but they don't work consistently so don't rely on there being heat. The outdoor area has some tables and is covered which was particularly helpful on the evening we went as there was a little drizzle. The indoor area is also open if you prefer/are comfortable. There is no service inside but if you order inside at the bar the staff will bring your order out to you outside. This was nice for separate tabs With a large group. Drinks are also good, they offer a full bar which I didn't expect. They do not list any specific cocktails on the menu but can make anything you like. Will definitely keep this place in mind for future outdoor gatherings! read more

Pandemic Review: Since Marin is currently in Tier 3, food and drink are allowed to be consumed inside the building. We were there on a Tuesday (early) evening and there were tables available inside. The doors were open so there was some air flow through the space. We ate and drank outside. There are plenty of tables - small and large. Fortunately, it was a relatively mild evening for early November, since there are no heaters. After having a couple of beers from their extensive tap list (they also have a lot of bottled beers), we ordered some food. We shared the Cubano and the fried chicken sandwich with a side of onion rings. Everything was hot and perfectly cooked. I will be back. read more

Had heard that they served special IPAs and good food, the food was even better and had some very original plates. Came here for lunch with a friend because we wanted both drinks and food. We sat at the bar because we wanted a quicker service. I got a rum & coke but forgot to ask for s specific rum so I got well rum and it wasn't the best so I recommend not getting the well. For food, we ordered the Brussels sprouts, a turkey sandwich and the BLT. The brussel sprouts were super good and crispy, would def come back and order it. I liked my sandwich but felt like the bread could've had a spread on it, bc the sandwich wasn't the most flavorful. You have to be flexible these days when two of your regular spots don't open try new. Tam had nice outside seating available and the service was great, fast and friendly. We had the no meat burger and the fried chicken sandwich. I'm not a fan of the sweet buns but that is just me and they tasted like they should sweet and fluffy, crispy on the butter side. The no meat was excellent and the fried chicken perfectly cooked. It's says fried chicken come with a side of coleslaw while it was literally only a forkful. Also had the kale Caesar's salad. The salad was good but nothing reminded me closely to a Caesar's salad. So the menu description should be a bit more precisely :) food is very good bar food and we would always come back for a break here! Five stars in the beginning as always and one star away for an unclear description on the menu and limited menus options. Finally made it here after the initial opening lines died down. Watched the restoration of the old billiard room to the restaurant the past months. Lovely interior and great outdoor dining option, particularly Thursday and Friday nights when the city of San Rafael closes the 4th st block for evening dining. Street parking but close to several garages. Lots of beverage choices on tap. Food was prepared and delivered quickly. Cod fish tacos were solid! Nice salsa though personally I missed the chili heat. I really like what they did to this space. It's roomy, spacious, an all in all great vibe. There is outside seating if you choose. You can bike here and hang you bike on the wall while you patronize, which is kinda cool. The bartender is super friendly. They have a great beer list with plenty of options to choose from. I can always find a good hazy on tap. They also have a full bar so the possibilities are endless. The food is over priced. I've only have the Mission Dog, which I enjoyed but I am scared to try anything else. The buffalo wing look good coming out but I never got a whiff of the sauce so I decided not to take that chance lol Great for large parties. They have picnic tables in side that fix 6 people comfortable. Also they have a section with colored high top tables that are pretty eclectic. Gives the place a nice pop. What a gem. Came to San Rafael to get a haircut and wandered over to Tam Commons for a draft after. The variety of beer is fantastic. I've found many brew pubs focus on pale ales to the exclusion of other varieties. Tam Commons has a variety of choices. I had a kolsch and 2 pilsners and they were fantastic. We had the turmeric cauliflower which was inspiring - I'm going to try to duplicate it at home :-). Also had the quinoa, yam, Brussels sprout bowl. It was delicious, loved the dip. We ate outside on the elevated seating area which was perfect as they turned a couple TVs outward so we could enjoy the MLB games. A very lovely evening. Only reason I didn't give 5 Stars because the bathroom wasn't stocked or clean - kinda makes you wonder how clean the kitchen is. I've been here 3x now, and I feel like I have a better understanding of how this place operates. We were put off by our first visit because we just wanted to come in for a beer, but their new hostess was overkill and left a weird impression. We just wanted to go to the bar, but she insisted we be seated somewhere else. She hovered around us, It was awkward, but I figured this place is new and they're figuring it out. Each time I've been here, we've placed ourselves at the bar table between the bar and the tables. The bar tender is in charge of taking your order in this area, on top the full bar. The wait staff only seem to serve the tables, with an occasional sweep to grab menus and finished plates. Service can seem slow for this reason - not necessarily a bad thing, but it comes off weird on your first visit. My recommendation - don't sit at the bar table if efficient service is what you are looking for. Other than that, the vibe is cool. Lots of concrete with a upscale basement feel, picnic tables for seating, and a nice lounge area by the entrance. Great beer selection and tasty food options. I miss the Billiards terribly, but I do love the new space and outdoor patio seating. read more

This is our second time coming to Tam Commons. The first time was for an event when the welcome was warm and the service was on point. Tam Commons is really like an upscale picnic with delicious comfort foods, an endless supply of varied cold beers, and no picnic ants. The best part, for us, was the outdoor patio, which is seasonally appropriate. Inside, the acoustics make for a conversation rife with, "What?!" and repetition. The ceiling in most of the dining area is low, so the sound was intensified. There has been an attempt at installing acoustic ceiling buffers, I could see, but it made little difference. Hence, we went outside. As, for the food, the Ribs are the winner, hands down. The are moist, savory/sweet, and flavorful. The sides, such as the Sweet Potato Tots were crispy and fun. The cheesey bread made everybody happy. The glaring flaw here, on our second visit, is the service. Staff is curt and inattentive. We left hungry and thirsty after a period of trying to get some "stop-back" service. After we ordered our first round we spent too much time and effort trying to get staff to notice us. When we were finally able to get some attention, it was by corralling the waitress as she was seating newer patrons. We decided to make this opportunity our "check, please!" moment, instead of a "one more round, please!" moment. Next time, we would stop by for one round, ask for the check as we received our app/beer order, pay, and sit outside for fresh air and peaceful conversation. read more

We chose this as a stop while trying out the Smart Train. It's about a 10 minute walk from the station. It was really hot yesterday so it was nice to have AC. They have a really good selection of craft beers and a full bar as well. We had the fish tacos and a pretzel. Both were really good especially with a cold beer or two. The staff were great too. This is a nice little tap room. It has seating to eat a meal and then it also has a bar area. We went during the NBA playoff game and the bar area was packed. It took us about 20 minutes of standing to finally snag seats but it was worth it. Really good environment and a good selection of beer. We also ordered Mom's Garlic Cheesy Bread and it was amazing. Perfect balance of cheese and garlic. It was insanely cheesy and just a really great shareable dish. I also have to say their TV placement is amazing. Everywhere you turn there is a TV waiting to be watched. The reason I gave them four stars is because the service was a little slow in the bar area.
