The building is old. Sometimes the air conditioning doesn't work well. The food used to be good but now it seems like a lot of it comes out of a can. With this corona pandemic everyone is confined to their rooms. It's been since March since anyone has been allowed to come out. This is house arrest and these people have not had anything to do or anyone to talk to. Their rooms are not that big either. The facility has 2 entrances and only one is open most of the time. It is on New Britain Ave and it has 4 lanes of traffic. It is almost impossible for anyone trying to take a left. I am waiting for the day when someone gets killed trying to do this, especially the seniors who still drive. It was an idiotic decision to close the entrance on Newington Ave where there are fewer cars going up and down the road. Some of the security guards have a reputation of being very rude. Parking at the facility is a total nightmare because there is very little of it. If you do find a spot you have to walk very far to get into the building. Don't think that the administrator there will care a lot about your opinion or your problems with this facility or with the staff. The rent there is very expensive and I would suggest to look elsewhere. There are a lot of empty rooms there and now you know why.

The rooms do not have working air conditioners but rather small fans, and its the middle of the summer- UNACCEPTABLE. Inside the facility and rooms it was hot, humid, and smelled like mildew!! My grandfather was there for just 1 week and caught pneumonia and had to get rushed to the hospital. He should've been admitted to the hospital at least a day sooner. No common sense, everyone is confused and directs you to the head nurse. DO NOT bring your loved ones there.

I never ever have written a review on Yelp, but I feel so strongly about Middlewood's of Newington…read morethat I had to take a minute to tell you about our experiences there. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and caring, I mean really caring and sweet. The food is delicious, healthy and there is plenty of it. If residents don't like food they just have to ask and another food will be made for them. There are all kinds of activities and excursions with plenty of staff to help; and they throw some of the best parties I have ever been too. Medical staff is on hand which is very helpful. My grandmother arrived and was very scared (she lived in her home over 65 years) I swear within a day or two she really started to love the place. She has made many friends. What I like best is that we don't have to worry about her. We don't have to spend the weekend, doing laundry, cleaning and help with her showering. We get to spend quality time with her. That's the best feeling in the world. The place has just upgraded the place, new carpets, new paint, new furniture everything is spotless and beautiful Kathy Braga is the Chief Fun Fairy and Director of Middlewood's. She runs a tight ship with lots of love. She makes everything run seamlessly. My grandmother has long term care insurance and they gave us so much trouble to get them to pay for my grandmothers care. Kathy dug in and we got the result we wanted they'd pay for her care. I don't believe that we would have gotten the same conclusion with out her. We love her, we love the place and we are very, very happy.

The rooms are very comfortable and the hallways resemble a college dorm with small tables of knick knacks and seasonal decorations. My mom gets her hair, nails and pedicures done on the premises. Also on the premises is a geriatric doctor and psychiatrist, both of which my mom sees. There are activities every day and also a van that takes residents to doctor appointments, the store as well as field trips and Wii bowling competitions with other assisted living communities. There's something for every level of care for seniors and I am very happy to have my mom living there.

Being 86 this year, living alone with a bum foot from a previous severe case of shingles, she took a bad fall in June '16. Resulting in a fracture left humous (above the elbow). The tough old bird endured 4 days in the hospital and corrective surgery. Now with 2 limbs down, she (& the family) were faced with recovery care. Upon being discharged from the hospital she was placed in a recovery unit in West Hartford due to a lack of availability elsewhere. This facility at best was a nightmare. The family quickly jumped on board and found an opening at Caleb Hitchcock Health Care Center, 2 days later. Oh my! What a difference. Caleb was quickly coined, The Country Club for Care. The facility is up-to-date, well managed, and not lacking any amenities for elderly post-operative rehabilitation; Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). Private rooms with bathrooms and a home like appeal. The public areas are designed to allow residents plenty of activities at every level of mobile ability and skill level. PT & OT were conveniently located in each unit and very well equipped. The staff warm, skilled, and open to any needs of the resident. Believe me, my Mutter-Schwiegersohn had plenty of unique needs and requests while there. Some very challenging, while others very humorous, but the staff (& family) never failed to meet her needs. After weeks of rehabilitation and most importantly occupational therapy, Oma successfully graduated her care. She was discharged this past week (Sept. '16), but not without Caleb follow-up and home evaluation. She came home with a walking device and other home modification were made for her to remain as safe as possible. Fingers crossed. Thanks Caleb & Staff for everything!

Duncaster Continuing Care Retirement Community has always been a top notch Graduated Living…read moreCommunity since its founding in 1984. Recognized and awarded throughout their 34+ years. This Community has recently provided us with two special and personal experiences. First, my mother-in-law enjoyed and when I say enjoyed, this is very understated, a recovery period in their on-site Caleb Hitchcock Health Center. This was followed by a bad fall in her own home, which required surgery and two+ months of ambulatory therapy. Second, our daughter was offered and accepted a position with the Community. I was able to spend two and half hours one evening during an earlier snow fall to "safely Uber" my daughter home after her shift. While there I was able to stroll and observe the Community first hand. In that time, I chatted with the most wonderful residents, diverse, each within their own level of life and ability. However ALL appeared happy and with a most impressive sense of close community and caring for one and other. My favorite component is the Aquatic Center. Top notch with scheduled low impact exercise classes, monitored open swim lanes, and a gradual ramp for aided aqua therapy. Not to put aside their adjacent Health and Wellness Center with fitness and movement classes for all. The dining facilities are NOT run of the mill either. Ranging for Casual formal dining, private spaces for residents to dine with visitors, and even door service. The menu was quite impressive offering a new menu everyday catering to all dietary needs and wellness, too. Now, entertainment. I happened upon an open auditorium with a large number of residents enjoying a live Piano, Violin, and Cello performance. I stood in the doorway mesmerized leaving the snowstorm behind. From there I wondered into their Library with an ample and diverse section of book stacks, warm well lit seating areas, and during the day a Librarian. In warmer, months the grounds are park like, the landscaping is beautiful and offers a number of pathways with spaces sit, enjoy nature, and let a little Vitamin D seep in. I'm only scratching the surface and I could go on, however, I close with this: I hope to be as fortunate one day as the Duncaster Residents to partake in such a well planned, maintained, and caring Community to help extend the enjoyment of our sunset.

An added reassurance is that they are accredited through the state and have received various awards. Duncaster has been in business for about 35 years and they've certainly earned their great reputation in the community. This is a facility I would highly recommend for anyone seeking to place their elder family into quality care with excellent healthcare professionals.

My personal grievance with this place is that on 3 occasions my pay was short, there was no attempt by anyone to rectify the situation. I have called countless times and the administrator refuses to talk to me. They clearly don't treat their employees right, while I was there I heard similar stories from several co workers, their vacation time being taken away unexpectedly, not getting paid overtime, missing money from checks. Management is effectively stealing from their staff, and hoping they can get away with it. As far as resident care goes, it's just as bad. The residents would frequently state that their needs weren't met, and their concerns went unheard. Several of them had very serious concerns, but expressed that during a state survey no one talked to them, despite specifically asking to speak to a state worker. Most of the employees here, from what I saw give their best effort to accommodate the needs of the residents. It's really hard to take care of this many people effectively with the delapidated state of this building. It's pretty shocking given the location that this facility is anything less than amazing. The owners should really consider investing some money into this building, providing adequate resources for their staff, making sure they're compensated properly, and ensuring the residents are receiving the quality of life they deserve. In my short time there it felt pretty clear that none of these things were their priorities.
