We eagerly climbed to the top of the designated coulee in search of the cache to be greeted by black impending storms clouds. :( Retreat was the only option since there was no tree to take shelter under. Have you been to east central Alberta? If you have you know that there isn't an abundance of trees. We started our dissent into the reentrant of the coulee with the 100km/h winds right on our tail. After safely navigating our retreat we clamoured into the town of Drumheller seeking a refuge and came upon Cafe Ole. The service was warm and welcoming. Thankfully they didn't turn the riff-raff away when we sloshed in dripping wet, muddy and one of us had cacti stuck in them but sustained us with some stellar smooth americanos and a couple of steamed soy milks for the kid. Did I mention the decor? My husband even asked if his order could be delivered to the bathroom. Yeah it was that clean & inviting, leaving you in a state of zen on your departure. Cafe Ole is a treasure for anyone needing a retreat along their journey. They'll be seeing us back, likely for lunch next time. :)

I'm torn about how to rate Rocky's Bakery. Six years ago, they catered our wedding and we were…read morequite disappointed. However, I decided to go in and try their baking before writing a review. So several years later, here I am. The ambiance is typical for a bakery run by a 70 year old man. There are old signs like "espresso yourself" up on the walls. One immediate problem stood out to me: there's no air conditioning, and it was hot in there. I got a blueberry pastry and a coffee. Although the coffee was just in a pre-made cannister, it was quite good and refillable. The pastry was very good and had a ton of fruit filling. There is plenty of seating, although I can imagine it gets quite busy at 5 in the morning when all the old people from Strathmore come in for lunch. It said on the window that it was a bakery and a cafe, but I failed to see any espresso machine and didn't ask. Strathmore needs a good cafe with great espresso and a friendly atmosphere--like Analog or Phil & Sebastian's in Calgary. This certainly isn't it, unfortunately. With that said, I'll probably come back again when I'm in the mood for a fresh pastry.

Got a bunch of day old donuts for the office - the little guy said "some say my day olds are better than fresh Tims!" And you know what!? They were! Got a pizza shell which was 10/10 so fluffy I could take a nap on it! A pepperoni cheddar stick which was ok and we tried a bunch of cannolis!! They were so good!! Whenever im out that way I will always hit this place up from now on! Only thing: they close by 3pm so get there early!!
