Love this place. The eclectic decor, the food and the ole grouch lady is very nice! She is not related to Oscar at all! I had the Giant Burger. It is delicious and the bun is pretty much an entire loaf of bread. The patty is homemade. I could have eaten the whole thing and got the T-shirt but why? What a great surprise this place was! Cozy, eclectic, friendly, and great food! Fresh baked bread, delicious cinnamon rolls, yummy sandwiches and my husband is still trying to figure out how they made the perogies so tasty. Please visit here! The very nice mature lady was the owner, cook and server. The decor had a lot of interesting kitch on the walls, the floor was sloped and it was far from fancy but that's not what they are selling. It was as advertised, home cooked food at more then reasonable prices. I got two meat cabbage rolls and two pirogies for$9. I recommend you visit. read more

Read about this place in the 2012 Vacation Guide for Drumheller. Sounded decent so at 6:30pm on a Saturday night we had searched the town twice over for a coffee shop (and nothing was open) we decided to try here. Even Cafe Ole downtown was closed (like really?!!!). From the outside it looks like an old house converted into a restaurant. But once you walk in..well I felt like I was either entering the Twilight Zone or one of those cheap horror western flicks from the 70's. I'm sorry. We wanted a special coffee and perhaps a bite to eat and what I saw just about dropped me on the floor. The place is terribly outdated. A couple of regulars were there and flies hovering around their food. There was an empty table of 6+ to my right and had not been cleared in perhaps a couple of hours. Still loads of food on the plates so perhaps the patrons did not like the food? Who's to know. The menu was circa 1970 with nothing appealing but since I was in, had conversed with the older lady working there (with bright red lipstick that was fading)..I felt committed. So I ordered hubs a ham sandwich with tomatoes on white (a typical sandwich for his type)....and that was what came, nothing extra for $5. I also felt obliged to order the last cinnamon bun neatly wrapped in plastic wrap and looking like it had a bite taken out. There was no special coffee and in fact someone came in with "some goods" for the older lady and she kept yelling to her (maybe) husband cook to come look at it...um while he was making my ham sammy. And then she forgot to give me my cinnamon bun but in the end a friendly reminder took care of that. Again I'm sorry...this might be a classic local haunt that everyone loves but it scared the bejesus out of me. I might be a city chick but I like my diners clean, without flies and with personality. All I can say is you be the judge :). read more

Wow! That's all I can say about a restaurant that bakes their own bread, and knows their customers by name! It's not fancy, nothing matches, but the food is great, reasonably priced, and the service is friendly! My first visit I had the ham sandwich(with everything on it, including hot peppers!), second visit, the grouch burger... If I am lucky enough to return to Drumheller it is definitely a return visit! read more

A must do to complete the Drumheller experience. It may not have fancy decorations but the food is home cooking and tastes great. The real gem in this place is Gary and Fran; the owners, they are truly amazing and genuine people who have raised thousands of dollars for STARS through their annual 24 hour jam at the old grouch. If you go on the right night you may even have the great privilege to see local musicians come in, grab a coffee and jam. The old grouch family is truly a special thing, there is deep meaning and lessons to be see and learned here. Look past the superficial and enjoy good company and home cooking. read more

Delicious food! Three of us had a Ukrainian special and the homemade cabbage rolls were superb. The bread was homemade as well and toasted to perfection. One person had the Grouchasaurus burger with the works. A pound of beef cooked up and dropped on a loaf of bread (still homemade) with all the fixings. Hot and juicy! True, the environment is best entitled "unique." It was a lot like walking into an antique store for a meal but it fed to the theme of the place. Each of us were served with different plates, cups and silverware. And there was a real homey feel. By that I mean there was a water jug and after your first cup you got up and served yourself. The cook came out to talk to us and show us his big pig. We were the only ones there and he was interested in seeing if the whole burger got eaten. When my friend didn't finish his burger, they provided a piggy pouch to take it home in. Not everyone would appreciate the feel of the place nor the owners' humor. But for us, it made up a great evening out. The only thing that kept it from a five star was a rooster that crowed at anyone who tried to reach the men's room. I found it downright scary. read more
