The Mermaid is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. The sandwiches can be incredibly good, but I don't know that consistency is their strong suit. The real reason you come to the Mermaid is the bar in the back, which is as divey as they come and absolutely terrific. Want a special cocktail? Well too bad, they probably won't have the mixer that it calls for. But if you want simple drinks or just an out of the way place to have a beer and experience the true locals, this is your spot. Popular with the fisherman, and definitely get rowdy if you stay too late. But if you dig a dive bar you have to check out the Mermaid. This is the best example of a commercial fishermans bar in town. Haven't had a sandwich there but have drank beer and shot the shit with some great guys. Okay so theres a whole lotta chowder in this town and we've been coming to Westport for generations, but THIS CHOWDER is our favorite, extra creamy (no crunchy onions), loaded with clean (no sand) tasty ocean fresh clams (no over powering seafood taste), not to big- a perfect mix of minced and baby clams, potatoes, perfect seasoning (not thymed out) and a hint of butter! We had a very weird experience here. We called ahead to order take-out sandwiches. The person who answered the phone said, "Let me stop you before you order, we are out of clam chowder, meatballs, and roast beef." We said that was okay and ordered our sandwiches. He said give him 20-30 minutes and they would be ready. We had some misgivings since he seemed upset to be making sandwiches, and he'd tried to discourage us from ordering. We figured we should still get them since we'd gone to all this trouble. So we show up 30 minutes later. The door is locked and the lights are off. There is a closed sign in the window, and a handwritten sign saying they would be closed at 10:00pm for "maintenance." It was 5:00pm. Huh? We left. Overall very weird and confusing experience. The Mermaid Deli is a great little sandwich shop in Westport, Washington. Before I went clamming with friends at a nearby beach, we made a pit stop to grab some food. The place is somewhat isolated away from a main road, but it has a charming, no frills, casual vibe. The mermaid theme is prominently displayed, and if you look hard enough, you might see a painted mermaid on the wall winking right back at you! ;) The waitress who took our order was friendly. Though it took a while for her to make our Maui Pork sandwiches, it was so yummy-licious that I forgave the waitress almost anything. Their famous Maui Pork sandwich was crunchy and came out deliciously hot. The thinly sliced meat was tender, too. This was the first eatery we checked out for our trip to the coast. Tucked away in the factory processing district, it was a nice lil joint that had a casual vibe about it. Nice enough people working it, plenty of patrons hanging around the bar, chilling with their dogs, playing some pool and even a lil hoops on a basketball set up in the court out back. Had your typical dive bar feeling about it. Sandwiches were solid. Real nice and saucy that left a solid gut bomb afterword. Ordered the Ragin Cajun and the Maui Waui with a couple cups of clam chowder. A little longer on the wait, but I don't mind quality if I have to be patient for it. The bar is relaxed and it has a good outside place to hang out and enjoy. Yes, it is a local place and many of the neighboring fish workers and yard workers come there. If you are expecting some type of regular service and attention, do not go. It is YMMV experience. Be patient is all I can say. The staff is friendly and diligent and usually busy in the kitchen. But a polite hello and I am here will reward you. So many places in Westport have closed up, this one in the middle of the industrial area is surviving and while they not have everything all the time, it is a good place! Roll with it. Really great sandwiches. We ordered the Rueben, Turkey Cajun, Maui wowie, and Maui pork. All were great. There was only one guy working there when we stopped in on Saturday around 1:00 pm. Our order took about 30 minutes to prepare but we were told that in advance. The service was friendly. We were the only people in the restaurant so maybe it's more of an evening/night-time place. More of a dive bar than a deli. We took our sandwiches to the beach for lunch on that 80 degree day. We had been told by friends this was a great little spot. I was really disappointed in this deli/pub. Tables weren't clean and there was no social distancing. Patrons and employees were allowed to smoke cigarettes while people were eating. Pot smokers were on the deck. Staff was feeding dogs scraps. Nasty political signs were on taped to the pool tables. I am very particular when it comes to sandwich shops. Like, extra judgey. This place has the greatest sandwiches I have found in Grays Harbor, and beyond. Seriously. The staff is amazing. It is always clean when I have come in. Great covered yet truly outdoor seating. Not too Smokey for a non-smoker. Order the Maui wowie. I regret not doing so sooner. Husband was working on crab pots real close to this place so I decided to take him to lunch here. Was slightly worried because it doesn't look like much from the outside. But it has good reviews and the chowder sounded good. The waitress was very friendly! Tall and thin kinda had beach wavy hair so she reminded me of a mermaid a little bit lol! I let her know we hadn't been there before and she explained in detail the menu to us. Told us the favorites for a lot of people were the meatball sub and the Maui pork. I ordered a cup of chowder and the Maui work sub. Husband got the Reuben sandwich. He liked it but, has had better Rubens. To me it had a bit too much thousand island dressing and that took away from the flavor of the meat and the sour kraut. The Maui pork was incredible. I see why it's a favorite! While it was very messy, it had a wonderful flavor and was on a ciabatta roll. Next time I will try the meatball. The chowder really is as good as others have said! It's so creamy and lots of clams, small pieces which is how I perfer it to be. It was great and the place is open from 11am til 2 am cause it also has a bar. A memior of the best sandwich experience in my life: The day was drizzly. Rain continued to fall like a leaky faucet. The surf was quality. Stormy but solid. Good breaks no crowds. It was time to call it a day. Calories were needed. My good friend Alex took me to the Oasis they call Mermaid. I walked into a deli with no employees. "Order in the back" the sign read. Interesting first impression. A sandwich shop with an alcohol focus. I scanned the menu. Alex chuckled. "What?!" I said. "no need for menus, you'll be having the Ragin Cajun" exclaimed Alex. It wouldn't have been my first choice. I'm a meatball guy. But i went with my gut and ordered Cajun. The bartender that took our order doubled as the bouncer. She was sweet and scary. I drank IPAs as I awaited my chariot of meats, cheeses, and breads. Then it came. The appearance was indifferent. Difficult to identify where the meat and cheese stopped and where the sauce and tomatoes started. Then, the first bite. The sensation crept down my spine. It's as if I was hovering over my own body, watching myself enjoy the best sandwich of my life. Another sip of IPA. Back to the sandwich. Yes Yes Yes....It still looks like a fish market, and the bar area is still freezing ass cold...But we liked coming here for the sandwiches. I know they sandwich I got was nothing what it used to be. The roast beef was quite the conservative amount and it had hardly any blue cheese. My wife noticed a difference in her sandwich as well.....I wanna go back just to see if it was an off night, but something tells me that's the way it's done there now. There are those places in Westport that cater more to locals and those that cater more toward tourists. The Mermaid Deli and Pub seems to cater to both. It doesn't have that run-down dive bar feel that the other local bars seem to have, but I have still seen locals off the boats come in here. Is it the wide choice of good beer? Maybe. Could it be the excellent sandwiches? Probably. As far as attracting touristy types (arguably like myself)? Well it's not run down, has good beer selection and has great food. Oh, and free WI-FI. I'm not sure you could find any better in Grays Harbor. The Mermaid has darts, a heated and covered patio (a necessity in a place that gets this much rain), and I've been told that local blues/classic rock bands play in the summer. I would recommend the Mermaid to anyone who finds themselves in Westport, whether you are coming from the boats, the jetty, or the beach. read more
