I visited Mitten a year ago and now had the opportunity to share this particular spot with my husband. What an incredible neighborhood spot. The food is delicious and fresh. The goat cheese pizza was just as good as I remember it. My husband's Cubano sandwich was ok, but he said he should have shared the pizza with me. He loves basil, and this pizza is basil forward. The gluten-free crust is crisp and tasty here. My husband doesn't usually like GF crust, but felt it was decent here. The chips though that came with the sandwich were made in house and we're INCREDIBLE. The beer is decent here. The food, people, and ambiance is what makes this a go to spot. read more

We were informed that it was no longer available. Aaargh!!!!! This is unacceptable with today's communications. We ended up ordering something we didn't want. Some of the best pizza in town and I have always loved coming here. Would give 5 stars if they could figure out proper timing for pickup orders. In the 5 times I have ordered we have waited an additional 15-25 minutes past when it was supposed to be ready (usually 50 minutes to an hour). I will continue to order from here but am thoroughly disappointed in the inability to properly time a takeout meal. read more

Slow service. My husband's food came out five minutes before mine. The nachos seemed to have hot sauce dumped all over them and were inedible. I like hot food but these just burned. The waitress never came back over to check to see how things were. The root beer tasted like corn syrup. This was truly one of the worst meals I have had in Grand Rapids. I had to get a manager so that we could get the bill and leave. To make things worse while I was waiting for the manager in the lobby to get the bill, he for some reason took it back upstairs to the table to where my husband was waiting. My husband was upset and just paid it, assuming the nachos were off of it. So we paid for food that we couldn't eat. My husband liked the beer and his impossible burger, but due to the poor service and overall horrible dining experience, we won't be back. I really wanted to love this restaurant, it was on the GF app, it had great reviews, loved the name, it was in an old firehouse, loved the philanthropy....maybe a great place on a really bad night. read more

I really want to give this place a better star score and there is definite potential for that, but unfortunately you have to have a ton of time to spend there in order to eat. It took over an hour for us to have our food brought to us. We had a show to go to so we had to have them box it for us before they even brought it to us. So basically we received our bill before our food. Beyond the wait, the pizza is very good and the beer is delicious! The front staff were very friendly, but our waitress was definitely over stretched with customers. She didn't check on us very often. The parking can be a bit of a challenge there too. It is basically all street parking in the neighborhood behind the venue, so it is not guaranteed to find something very close. Hopefully some of these issues are fixed, because the product they sell is worth trying. read more

This place was awesome. Unfortunately, I was not able to sample any of their beers, but that will change next visit. Stopped here with my girl before we left town for lunch. The place was full but it wasn't "too full." Service was great and the atmosphere was the typical dive bar, hipster look geared towards the slightly progressive college students or recent grads. We had the pizza flight and I can't even remember what choices we did. I remember a breakfast pizza, which was like chicken and waffle pizza, a spicy pizza with Jalepanos, even a hot dog pizza! It had ketchup and mustard with bits of hot dog! It was amazing! All six or so of the pizzas on this "pizza flight" were amazing. I would highly recommend it, and I wish I had lived closer so that I could frequent this place more! read more

Super fun place with a great dining experience and friendly staff. You can't go wrong with the pizza flights - you choose 6 different pizza from the menu, and they bring out slices of each on a platter. They'll usually have some crazy options, sometimes as a monthly special. If you get the chance to try chicken & waffle or mac & cheese, go for it! They also have an enormous soft pretzel that makes a great appetizer for a group. read more

Came here at a friends recommendation and loved it. Had a pizza flight (highly recommend) and I don't think you'll find more flavor on a wood paddle. 6 pizzas, enough for 3-4 people. Nothing was bad. The mac daddy was incredible. Me and my wife's favorite hands down. The BBQ came in a very close second. All the rest (deluxe, Thai, pesto, Mediterranean) were tasty, but nothing to write home about. Two things set this place apart 1. Amazing crust, crisp, still some chew, great flavor. 2. Freshness. All the veggies/cheeses/meats were great color, flavor, cooked perfectly. Country strong IPA was good, not amazing, but easy to drink all night and the house root beer was really fantastic. Wife hand the tandem cider which was good too, not too sweet. We stopped here with our dog on our way back from Lake Michigan because we heard the patio was dog friendly and the food was good and we were VERY happy with our decision. We sampled a few beers and got the large soft pretzel to start (it is HUGE and we didn't even get close to finishing). We also got the pizza flight which was delicious and we almost finished before I even thought of taking a photo for this review. It was six small samples of their pizzas each cut into four slices which was perfect for the four of us. Overall, very happy with our experience here and will definitely return when visiting Grand Rapids agin. read more

Stopped in today to finally experience the pizza flight and have a beer. The Mitten did not disappoint! Our pizza choices were Hog Heaven (it really was heaven!), Field of Greens (absolutely amazing variety of veggies), Westerdog (I have no words for this deliciousness), Chicken and Waffles (drooling), Pesto Chicken (eh, good but not great), and the house special for the day, Enchilada (perfect heat!). My drink of choice was the Nitro Black Betsy. Soooo creamy and delicious, I had to resist chugging the whole thing. Now, back to the pizza. In one word, amazing! When our waitress brought out our flight she quickly apologized and pointed up that there was a mix up in the kitchen and they doubled the Pesto Chicken and forgot the Field of Greens. We were so mesmerized by the flight I'm not sure we would've noticed. She assured us our missing pizza would soon be out. I was surprisingly delighted in the Westerdog tasting and I think it may have been my fav of the day! After a bit the waitress brought out the Field of Greens- not one, but TWO! She apologized again and said they like to "make things right". Wow! This was not only unexpected, but completely surprising! THIS is what customer service is all about! This was a really cool taproom. They have a nice, large inside seating area, and a nice amount of patio seating. They have two stories, however the upper deck wasn't open when we were there as it was a Wednesday around lunchtime. We each got a flight of beers, which were 5 oz pours for a nice price. They separate their beers into tiers, with nicer beers costing more, so I could get 4, 5 oz pours for only about $6(!!). For food, we split the spinach and artichoke dip. I thought it was delicious, and the chips that came with it were superb. I highly recommend this, and it was a fair price. We were coming off a pizza binge when we arrived, so we did not order any; however, the pizza looked amazing. One final thing, this bar loves baseball. Most of their bar, including the names of the beers, were themed around baseball. What's not to love?? I can't wait to come back. read more

The Mitten is a fun place to go for lunch and a beer. It's definitely a pizza place that has their own huge selection of brews and not the other way around. A handful of stools along the bar and about 15 tables is what makes up the seating area. The food is fine, pizzas are imaginative and the snacks are as well (pretzels, cheesy bread) with the Everidae standing out amongst the many sauces. It's a not too spicy pepper sauce that is sweet with a lil' heat. Beers are good, with the coconut porter standing out in my opinion and the Relief Session IPA a solid choice as well. Service was o.k., but as our table was nearing the end of our dining, we were told we needed to "cash out" due to "shift change". We hurried up as multiple workers came over a couple minute span to drop the check off and clear the table away without asking if we wanted more to drink. That kind of stood out to me-a party of 6 enjoying themselves should be allowed to relax at their table-as it wasn't as if there was an overflowing line waiting for tables as well. read more

Came to this joint with my old man late Saturday afternoon to sample some beers and grab a bite to eat. Glad we did. We were able to get a table no problem and this being our first time here, the waitress was more than helpful guiding us along. All beers on tap are Mitten brews and we both got a flight of 6 beers to sample. Plenty of brews on tap to select from that cater to whatever tickles your fancy....IPA's to Nitro Stout and everything in between. Each sample is $1 with specialty brews at $3. The real kicker was the ability to get a pizza flight too! Pick 6 different specialty pizzas and you have the ability to try all of the pizza goodness they offer at this joint. We did this and I'm glad we did. All the pizzas on the flight were phenomenal! The flight special is enough to fill 3 -4 hungry people. It's apparent the Mitten Brewing specializes in beer n pizza and do both very well. They had some sandwiches and a list of apps to choose from too, and on my next visit I'll be sure to try the giant pretzel as it looked incredible. On a side note as we were finishing up a good amount of people were standing around waiting for a table...but that can be expected anywhere on a Saturday evening. One of my favorite places we visited while we were in Grand Rapids. Huge fan of the baseball theme. More of a restaurant downstairs, but more bar upstairs. We sat fight at the bar upstairs, and enjoyed our experience. The staff, especially our bartender were exceptionally friendly and added to the experience. We had seen good things about the pizza, and it did not let us down. We shared a Pesto Chicken Pizza, minus the mushrooms, and were beyond satisfied. The crust was delicious, and the combination of flavors with it was perfect. As a brewery, the beer is vital; and The Mitten hit it out of the park. My personal favorite was Barrel Up, the barrel aged version of Label Up, a maple pecan brown, which acted as a solid base beer. My fiance really enjoyed the MVP(umpkin). Brewery I would highly recommend to anyone visiting GR. Beer is good, food is good, and friendly service all making for a high quality experience. Would definitely return if in GR again. read more
