I've been wanting to check out The Moniker for months and luckily finally made it over after a Cardinals game recently. They were just opening up for the evening and it took a few minutes to get served, but everyone was super friendly and I was impressed by the design/vibe inside. I ordered the strawberry rhubarb pie mixed drink which came with a little side of dessert. I loved the drink itself but the fruit in the dessert was definitely past its prime and I ended up eating around it. We also got the wash ave flatbread for the table. We all loved the crunch of the giardiniera on the flatbread and it was a great plate to split for the table. I do wish prices were included on the menus just for visibility. I really want to love The Moniker. It's a beautiful space, and I'm a big fan of the decor. It's thoughtfully done and has a great vibe. The drinks are on the pricier side, but they're well-curated, beautifully crafted, and the presentation is on point. I haven't tried the food yet, though I've heard good things. It does seem like the menu is limited, and availability can be hit or miss. I was told they were out of certain plates and that they'd already sold the last of some items for the day. The staff were incredibly welcoming, which for me is always the biggest indicator of whether I'll enjoy a place. I arrived during their daily Happy Hour (4-6 PM) and ordered the crab dip with homemade crackers, while my friend tried one of their cocktails. Everything tasted delicious, and the staff remained very attentive throughout our visit. I was also impressed by the cleanliness and the interior design. I noticed a beautiful mural on the wall and later learned it is a portrait of one of the owner's mothers, how sweet is that? If you're thinking about stopping by this new downtown spot, don't hesitate! My only feedback is that the entrance can be a little difficult to find as the signage wasn't very visible to me, but that's it. Highly recommend! read more

To sum up our evening and since we were in the area, my friend suggested The Moniker. I was eager to try as I knew it opened earlier in the year. Mind you, the time we went was 9:15 on Saturday, but it was pretty dead. So either we missed out on the fun, or it came after we left. When we walked in, there was some party/reunion going on close to the door, so we sat on the other side. The first thing that caught my eye was the gold. The aesthetics were everything; very eye-catching and appealing! Unfortunately, this is where things kind of took a nose dive. The bar wasn't busy at all. I'm not sure how many people they had in total working because I saw one guy making drinks and one girl who'd sometimes be behind the bar and then she wouldn't. Either way, it took a long time to get water or service for that matter. At one point we contemplated going next door to the cigar lounge. Thankfully, the guy making the drinks told the girl to help us. When she came over, she was less enthused. Yikes. I only got one drink, which was the Coquito. I was happy and surprised at the same time. This was the first time I've ever seen it on a menu in Stl or anywhere for that matter! While the service was ungodly slow in the beginning, the quality of the drinks more than made up for it. The taste alone was spot on and I couldn't have been more pleased. Even if they weren't understaffed with a limited menu when I visited on a Sunday I'm not sure the food would have been enjoyable/worth the price. Came here not long after they opened. We're familiar with downtown STL but had a little trouble finding it; it's in the lobby of an apartment building. We were the oldest ones in here, so we did feel like the 20 somethings were like "who brought their parents??" It was very cool and vibey. The bar was beautiful. The place wasn't too crowded (we were there ~5pm on a Friday). The cocktails came quickly and were well presented and very balanced. We ordered the beef tartar appetizer with fried wontons, which was outstanding. I'm not a tartar fan (the raw beef weirds me out), but I went out on a limb to try this. It was so good. We did use a coupon that had been offered as a promotion ($25 for $50 worth of food/drink). The beef tartar, a cocktail, and a double pour of Old Forester came up to just over $50. I did deduct a star. Why, you ask? Because they had a DJ playing music at a volume level of 11 out of 10. I'm not that old, and I can dig some cranking music, but we couldn't even talk to each other. Today, tried the House Shot, just so I could get served in the Mini Gold Gobblet. Today's Shot was a Passionfruit Lemondrop and it was well balanced with lemon tartness and sweet. As I overheard someone else order, I went with the Sweet Potato Pie Martini...I'm intrigued! It was delicious!! Tasted just like the pie, how did they do that!? The Moniker just dropped onto Washington Ave and I couldn't be more pumped. Old St. Louis hunter green took a bath in gold and that is the vibe. It's fancy without being annoying about it. We randomly walked into The Moniker on a Wednesday night while we were in town for a food safety work conference... and ended up staying over four hours. Honestly, it was one of the most memorable dining and cocktail experiences I've ever had. From the moment we sat down, the owner took incredible care of us. He served us personally the entire night at the bar, walking us through each drink, explaining the ingredients, and sharing the thought process and craft behind everything he creates. You can tell immediately that this man is deeply passionate about what he does. It's rare to meet a restaurateur who is this invested in the art of the experience. Drinks we tried: * Devil in a Blue Dress * Trinidad Sour * Batida * Starry Night * 4 Moniker Specials: his curated choice pours based on your palate I wanted to drink through the entire beautifully thought out menu, but also didn't want to crawl back to the hotel. Every cocktail felt like a piece of art. The garnishes alone were incredible: sparkling glitter accents, cherries adorned with gold, agave leaves, even tiny crowns on baby chalices. Every glass looked like it belonged in a magazine. One of the coolest moments of the night was when he demonstrated his clarified milk process, showing us how he makes the vanilla-infused dusse mixture that goes into his Blackberry Cobbler Martini. Watching the level of technique and care that goes into these drinks was fascinating. And the food... wow. The Steak Medallion with chimichurri and potatoes was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned, beautifully seared, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. Absolute perfection. The atmosphere ties everything together. The decor is magical: elegant black and gold tones, textured details everywhere, regal and moody in the best possible way. You can tell that every inch of the space was thoughtfully designed and executed. The owner sat with us for long stretches of the evening, talking about cocktails, technique, inspiration, and the passion behind his craft. Experiences like that are rare. My best friend and I visited St. Louis for the first time and on our way back to our Airbnb. We stopped at this gem because it was on our list. It was beautiful in here the decor, the aesthetics, gorgeous it was pretty empty and we found out it just opened maybe four months ago. The staff was so friendly and knew the menu pretty well. I had their coquito today and the Chai Old Fashioned (I'm positive I'm getting the name wrong). What perfect drinks for a cold damp and dreary day. Both were delicious and strong. I've been a fan of coquito for decades and their version is delicious with a nice thick topping of thick whipped cream. The chai old fashioned was decadent spicy and delicious, and what a kick. That just might be my new go to when I return. The staff is warm, welcoming and everyone is gorgeous!!!! Truly a beautiful crew and they really have each other's backs. You can tell. Service was great in the beginning but things went downhill - I'm not exactly sure what could have overwhelmed the staff, because there appeared to have been employees there while I was present. It took a while to get an order in for food, and when we finally did place our order, we waited on our meal for over an hour. We never received an update on timing, and eventually our server stopped coming by altogether. When we went to the bar to cancel our order, the bartender offered apologies and gave us a drink on the house. I appreciated that gesture. read more

Went to Moniker last night for their Valentine's Day dinner. We were so excited because we had been wanting to try this place for quite some time. The venue is absolutely lovely with the greens and golds, but that's all we can rave about when it comes right down to it. We walk in to a DJ which is nice but the volume was way too loud. I think they were trying to blow out my ear drums. I love music but it should be in the background. I shouldn't be shouting to my partner across the table from me. It took around 45 mins to receive our drinks and to order our food. Now, we couldn't even pick our drink of choice. This place is known for their amazing cocktails, but the fully stocked bar was not completely open to us?!?!? I tried to order a gimlet and my husband wanted a dirty martini. The server said they were only going off of the 4-5 drinks suggested on the menu, which we did not want. Limited drink choices should have been stated on their Valentine's Day announcement. They were able to "accommodate" me by bringing me a glass of wine. My husband ordered a drink off of the limited drink list which was not what he wanted. We chatted for a bit and had our drinks. So now we've been there for an hour and 20 mins with no food yet and only saw our server once. Finally, the first course came out which was the Chef's amuse-bouche. Let's just say it was completely laughable. The small plate consisted of ruffle chips (bottom of the bag crumbs) and onion dip. I mean....what?!?!! We were in shock for a second. We've been there for 80mins and this is what is presented to us. Due to the first course, we decided we didn't want to stick around and wait another 45 mins to see what was next. We didn't want to cause a scene, so we let them know that something came up and we had to leave. We asked for the check since we ordered drinks. They didn't send our server back to us, but sent someone from the kitchen staff to our table to have my husband pay for our entire meals. Now, did they offer to box up our meals (I mean we did pay for them)....NO! Did they offer to comp us for our wasted time and mediocre service....NO! Service was horrible and our first course was laughable. We will not be recommending this establishment to friends and family. read more
