I literally live a 4 minute walk from here and have no idea why it took me this long to check it out. I took my boyfriend here last night for his 24th birthday celebration, and boy did it exceed every expectation. When we first arrived, we were taken aback by the waterfall feature at the front door. We genuinely thought we were at the wrong entrance. Turns out it was entirely intentional, and in the excitement of the evening, we forgot to ask about the story behind it. A fun little mystery to solve on our next visit. We arrived about 30 minutes early and were welcomed warmly from the moment we walked in. The staff gave us a lovely intimate table with a great view of the restaurant's eclectic decor and designs. The ambiance struck the perfect balance, lively and engaging without being so loud that we could not have a real conversation, which for my partner and me is genuinely one of the most important aspects of a dining experience. Since we both work incredibly busy schedules, this was not only a birthday celebration but our first proper date night in quite a while, and the atmosphere made it feel truly special. The staff even surprised us with a complimentary prosecco for the birthday, something we were absolutely not expecting and deeply appreciated. On the drinks side, although I am not personally a big drinker, my boyfriend loves exploring new spirits and cocktail combinations. The bartenders were fantastic: knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely enthusiastic about their recommendations across both wines and spirits. They made the whole experience feel curated rather than transactional. Now, let me tell you about Jelly. Our server Jelly was, without question, the highlight of the entire evening, and that is saying a lot given how spectacular everything else was. I have a severe pineapple allergy, and if you dine out with food allergies, you know the usual routine. The server writes it down, maybe glances at it when the food arrives, and you spend the whole meal quietly hoping for the best. Jelly was on an entirely different level. She went completely above and beyond, meticulously checking every food option and wine pairing to ensure nothing contained pineapple and that there was zero risk of cross contamination. When a wine bottle did not clearly list its ingredients, she did not guess or assume. She looked it up on the internet right then and there to confirm it was safe for me. That gesture might sound simple, but for someone with a severe allergy, it is everything. It communicates that she genuinely cared about my wellbeing, not just about getting through her tables for the night. I felt completely taken care of, safe, and able to relax and enjoy myself without the anxiety that usually accompanies dining out with an allergy. Jelly, if you ever read this: thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are exceptional at what you do and an absolute asset to Blood & Sand. And now, the food, which was nothing short of breathtaking. From the presentation, to the pacing and timing, to the extraordinary depth of flavor on every plate, the food at Blood & Sand is spectacular and amazing in the truest sense of both words. My boyfriend and I had the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings. We had originally hoped for the 10 course, but it was not being offered that evening. No matter, because the 5 course delivered more than enough to leave us completely floored. The evening opened with a palate initiator of carrots, goat cheese, and walnuts. I will be honest, I was not excited. Carrots and goat cheese are genuinely two of my least favorite foods on the planet. But I gave it a try and it was absolutely heavenly. A perfect encapsulation of what this kitchen does: it takes ingredients you think you know and transforms them into something you cannot stop thinking about. My absolute favorites of the evening were the tuna carpaccio, the wagyu flank steak, and the pierogis. Each one was cooked and composed to perfection. Everything melted in my mouth and left me wishing the courses would never end. My one constructive note is on the oyster course. I love oysters and eat them often, so I was genuinely looking forward to this one. The portion, two very small oysters with modest accompaniments of horseradish, a small salsa, and lemon, felt a little light even by tasting menu standards. I would love to see either four oysters at that size or two larger ones. It was gone so quickly and felt slightly out of step with the generosity of every other course. That small note aside, Blood & Sand delivered one of the most memorable dining experiences I have had in a long time. Every single person on that floor, from the bartenders to the host to the incredible Jelly, went above and beyond to make the night comfortable, fun, intimate, and genuinely special. Trying hard to be a culinary star, but falls flat on both food and experience. Historic high-ceilinged setting that hasn't been fully restored, decor also leaves something to be desired. Unfortunately despite the establishment having a tasting menu and using culinary language, the food was a hodgepodge of elements that worked and elements that did not. None of our dishes earned 5/5 and none were memorable taste wise. With a hefty price tag to boot there are better places to go in St. Louis. 30. The place was pretty empty/ maybe 3 other tables while we were there. (that's a bad sign) We originally had reservations for 8 but one person couldn't attend so we arrived with 7. The menu had printed that the 5 course tasting menu was only for parties of 6 or less. We inquired knowing it may not be able to happen since we had 7, but it was worth a try since it was just one more person. The waitress said she would have to ask the chef to see if he could do 7 instead of 6..... she came back to inform us that the chef was not able to accommodate this request. Ok, fine. A rule is a rule, but there were only 3 other tables in there the entire time we dined. I love music and a good vibe but the music was so loud over our table we could hardly hear each other speak. (90s Cranberries at that).... The cocktails and apps were the only good part of the meal, but $25 for one cocktail is a stretch unless I'm in Vegas or St. Barths. All of our main entrees were overly salted- like so salty we all commented how salty each of ours was. I had the pasta. Good flavor and creamy but too salty. No decaf coffee. I've never been to a fine dining restaurant that doesn't have decaf for an after dinner drink. Strange. Then it was time to pay. There was a noted 3% credit card fee. We paid with cash. The waitress attempted to say she didn't think she would have change because "there was no one working that had to cash to break our bills." Really? No one has cash at a restaurant? Must be next door with the decaf coffee and dinner music. The cherry on top that leads me to write a negative review (I am in my 40s and can never recall leaving a negative ereciew) The friend that made the reservation just found a $200 charge to her credit card from this joke of a restaurant. Ends up they charge the card you make your reservation with $25 per person and supposedly take this amount off the bill when you pay... we paid with cash and then they still charge the card. I'm well aware hardly anyone pays with cash anymore, but people still do. Be ready. Everything about this place screams closing in 18 months, poor quality control in the kitchen and no owner/management oversight. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a while. I made reservations for one, to celebrate my one-year, spinal surgery tumor removal. Reservations set for Saturday. When I arrived, the place was empty. Maybe 2 tables with patrons. I gave them my name for my reservation, and they sat me at the bar... I was not happy. I wanted a table to MYSELF. I could have just walked in for that. I did express my disappointment for making a reservation and still being sat at the bar, but I just stayed at the bar (why?? IDK). The music was SUPER loud at the bar; I expressed that and they adjusted the sound, which was nice! The actual space is BEAUTIFUL. Old building, but elevated decor. PERFECT for date night or girls' night. The bathroom is gorgeous and clean; there's a huge, gorgeous mirror right outside for you to take pics in. See below, lol. I told the bartender what brought me in and he congratulated me. Very kind! He helped guide me through the menu and informed me of the 5 & 10 course options. I decided to go with a la carte items. The menu had a lot of upscale items, that I would prob never try, i.e. frog legs & caviar, or items I'm allergic to, lol. I started with the dead leaves and the dirty ground for my drink. It was good. Not too sweet. I opted for the Pasta Burro e Parmigiano. I mean... It was good. Nothing to write home about. It honestly gave buttered noodles with parm cheese & truffle. We had such an incredible experience at Blood & Sand celebrating our five-year anniversary, and Nicole was a huge part of what made the evening so memorable. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, Nicole made sure every detail of our experience was exceptional. She was attentive without ever being intrusive, warm, conversational, and incredibly personable. Her knowledge of the menu was outstanding--she took the time to explain everything in detail, answered our questions confidently, and made excellent recommendations that helped make our meal even better. Her wine recommendations were also spot-on and paired beautifully with our evening. We tried the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairings. We indulged in exquisite delights such as the oysters, alligator empanadas, kangaroo, lamb chomps and amish chicken. Every morsel and sip a delight. What really stood out was how genuinely invested Nicole seemed in making our anniversary feel special. It never felt like she was simply going through the motions of providing good service; she created an experience for us. That level of hospitality is something you remember long after the meal is over. Blood & Sand already provided a wonderful setting for such an important occasion, but Nicole truly elevated the entire evening. With a name like Blood and Sand, it has to be good. The name is a homage to the great Rudolph Valentino silent movie, evoking exotic glamour. The decor is nice and upscale. Tables are not crammed together. You can talk to your dinner companions and hear their responses. We were seated in a banquette and it was nice. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and not stuffy in the least. Our server was great. We both had the 10 course tasting menu and the wine pairing. The food was good. I would not say it is the best I have had, but it was very good and met expectation. Despite the emphasis on "these are TASTING portions," it was a lot of food. I ended up bringing my fish and steak courses home and I was overly full. The wine was nicely paired and delicious. Bring a designated driver! The tuna carpaccio was the stand out, lightly flavorful and acidic, it was exceptional. The salad and poached pear were the next favorites of our table. The down side is price. It is pricey. We knew that going in. $140 for the 10 courses and $100 for the wine, so $240 each or $480 for the two of us. Unfortunately, that doesn't include tax, credit card fee (!!), or the gratuity they say they will add to parties of 6 or more. We were a party of 2 and they added it. I don't mind the gratuity. The tax and credit card fee were epic and the bill was $700 ($694). Yikes. Definitely a special occasion place! The only other downside is they need a dress code. Several people were in jeans and dressed very casually. I am not suggesting it should be like in New Orleans where gentlemen must wear a sport coat...well maybe that wouldn't be so bad. I am not sure how to describe the experience or the restaurant but the best word I can think of is unique and I mean that in the best way. Upon arrival with the restaurant, I almost turned around because it didn't look like an actual restaurant when you pulled up it almost looked similar to a warehouse entrance so I was a little leery. I'm very familiar with downtown St. Louis so I didn't know if I should proceed, but I'm glad I did. We made reservations online so when we arrived, our table was ready. They weren't too packed so we were able to sit in a nice little area by ourselves, which was very peaceful. All of the service was great and I like that I could see the kitchen from where I was sitting that is always a place for me in any restaurant. They brought us out a little tasting of carrots to try and they were so yummy. Had pecans in them. And then our food was immaculate. The flavors were so filling and the potato puffs were the best thing. I loved all the items the only thing I wish is that the steak had been a little less chewy , little less fat but other than that everything else was amazing. My boyfriend and I came here for date night and we did the 10 course meal. It was 3.5 hours long, we were seated at an intimate table in the corner of the restaurant where we could observe the room, and had a lovely, sweet waitress. She was very friendly. The only issue we had is that we felt like it took a bit too long between courses. In a tasting menu of this size, you want the courses to be pretty consistently back to back. But otherwise, lovely dinner. While we didn't love every dish, they had a lot of very unique and interesting ones, which is something I love and look for. For $140, the 10 course is good value, in my opinion. Some of the courses give you 2 options to choose from, so we just got both in those cases to try them all. They give you a free small glass of champagne at the beginning which is a nice touch as well. Here's what we tried (I'll only give a rating and brief description for each so as to not spoil them): -Amuse-bouche beet salad: 8/10 - Fresh, loved the goat cheese -Pork Belly: 9/10 - One piece was moist, the other tougher, but flavor was FIRE -Chowder: 9/10 - SO creamy, lots of interesting textures -Oxtail Poutine: 8/10 - as a Canadian, I loved the nouveauté of this. -Fried Calamari: 7.5/10 - Pretty standard -Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich with Caviar: 5/10 - Thought it would be unique, but did not taste the caviar or anything special about this -Squash and Goat Cheese salad: 7/10 - I don't love squash but the interplay of the goat cheese and pomegranate was lovely -Tuna Carpaccio: 7/10 - Fresh and zingy. a bit weird looking. -Rabbit Ravioli: 10/10 - SOOOO rich and yummy. Loved the truffle and savoriness of this dish. -Cod and Spaghetti Squash: 8/10 - Fish was well executed, and spaghetti squash had an interesting richness to it -Watermelon Sorbet Palate Cleanser: 9.5/10 - SOOO delicious. Wasn't sure what to expect from this place and boy, were we pleasantly surprised! Blood & Sand used to be members only, but opened to the public several years ago. We had a team dinner here during a conference and had no problem getting a table. Their bar list is nice and their wine list was extensive. We enjoyed several appetizers including the truffle tots, caviar tray, octopus and poutine. We all ordered the elk steak with blueberry glaze and veg. It was incredible! Our server was the manager and she was attentive and had excellent suggestions for us. The ambiance is spot on and not too loud. They charged us 3% credit card usage fee even though we informed the server we were paying in cash, so took forever to remove the charge. Then they did NOT have change (so if you plan to pay in cash, be exact!)... now the person who made the reservation has a 25$ per person charge for making the reservations!!! I have been wanting to try this place for a while . I stumbled on it by accident and boy was I happy I did . Cocktails with my friend is what happened. Outside is just a bland building but inside sings elegant and upscale. Chandelier and fine china and a lengthy cocktail and food menu. Pretty pricey but I'm worth it I think. Sitting at the bar the bartender was very friendly and eager to assist. My friend tried a lemon drop and it was ok per her response. I asked for something tropical and the concoction he came up with was pretty but just average. He wanted to make me happy so he made me another concoction that was sweeter , and strong . It's a gift from the chef, very nice touch. The dishes I tried were fantastic and would order them again. Grilled Flatbread $15 - Strong cheese taste, a little much for me. Black Pepper Lobster $31 - Comes with forbidden black rice that was very flavorful. Halibut $41 - The fish was perfectly cooked and has a nice seasoned crust on top. The bed of peas and ham it laid on was not my thing. Beignets $11 - 5 pieces served with tasty mango puree. Nice and crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Other items I tried in the past: Tater Tots - Not your average every tater tots! These tots are so creamy inside like mashed potatoes and crispy on the outside. The accompanying side of French onion dip is divine. Pork Belly - Crispy on the outside, nicely cooked. Went very well with the slaw. Oeuf en Meurette - Oeuf means egg in French is pronounced "oof". Very unique combination of ingredients and flavors! Bluefin Carpaccio - Thinly sliced raw tuna, the light pink color looks more like Hamachi (yellowtail). Easy reservation through OpenTable. Tucked slightly off the beaten path in St. Louis is a place called Blood & Sand, and finding it feels like an intentional part of the experience. On a street filled with restaurants you might think you're in the middle of the dining district. Then you turn off that main strip and you're walking into what feels like an industrial corridor, suspiciously empty. If you didn't know better, you might assume you were about to stumble into a secret society event. Once inside the transformation is immediate. A bar that feels both intimate and inviting. The space somehow blends old-world Italy with hints of Eastern European charm -- romantic without being pretentious. I began with Pierogies -- delicate and comforting -- followed by a deeply rich French Onion Gratinee that set the tone for what was to come. The Braised Short Rib Poutine was indulgent in the best possible way, layers of flavor stacked on pure comfort. The highlight of the evening was the Senku Australian Wagyu Flank Steak, perfectly prepared and worthy of being the centerpiece of the night. My companion for the evening dined on the Oysters, Arugula Salad, Tuna Carpaccio, as well as the Senku Australian Wagyu Flank Steak. And then dessert: a dark chocolate torte finished with gold leaf -- dramatic, decadent, and exactly the right ending. One of the unexpected pleasures of the evening was the open view into the kitchen. Watching the chefs work is like watching choreography -- precise, efficient, artistic. I'm sure they don't always enjoy being observed but it's impossible not to admire the craft. Somewhere during the evening it occurred to me that "Blood and Sand" was ironic and fitting for the circumstances of my visit. History tends to use it when passion becomes spectacle and not everyone is playing the part they auditioned for. This place is like an upscale goth spot which was different. The entrance was at the back of the building which felt kinda sketch. This was truly an interesting experience. One that didn't last long. I was part of a group of 4 and we lasted maybe 25 minutes here. Just enough to grab a drink, use the bathroom and leave. The moment we got here, we got weird vibes. We were the only ones here around 6pm on a Wednesday when we arrived. Some staff was playing in the revolving doors, some staff were playing on their phones, some staff looking bored. All of which is fine but that lack of enthusiasm transferred over to our service. We tried to shrug it off but we just kept feeling that energy every time we talked to someone new and we decided to leave. Didn't try the food but the appetizer they gave us on the house, which was a shooter of some sorts, was extremely salty and that was all we needed to decide to try food elsewhere. The drink menu was fun. It was named after different artists and was extremely unique. I'd give them 4 stars for that alone. But pair that with everything else and it's no more than a 2 star place for us. read more

I've been wanting to try Blood & Sand for a while now and was excited to check it out recently. The booths are spacious and the inside of the restaurant has a nice feel with the decor. Since Blood & Sand is on the pricier side, I'd definitely recommend going for a special occasion. We decided to try the 5 course tasting menu to get the whole experience. Service was great - however, I would've liked more details or explanations about each dish that was served. I was pretty impressed with some of the course sizes, considering this is a tasting menu. A few standout dishes included the Cauliflower Lump-Crab Brandade, the Parisian Gnocchi, and the Wagyu dish. The entire meal felt very balanced in terms of light and rich flavors. Note - If you decide to do the tasting menu, make sure to get different items than your companion. This lets you try even more dishes and find new things you like. read more

I'll start by saying 50% of the reason we came to St. Louis from Lexington was to try this restaurant. I absolutely love going to a restaurant that has a tasting menu with wine pairing.... its literally my favorite thing ever! The food was good, with a course or two being great. The sweetbreads were my favorite. You don't see sweetbreads in a restaurant around here often and the possibly could have been the best I've had. Service was also great. I think the biggest downfall (and this a personal con... some may feel the opposite) was that the portion sizes were rather large for a tasting menu. I was actually full 5 courses in and the last 5 courses were almost a task rather than an enjoyment. I also like to take one bite and get all the flavors of the dish and that was hard on some courses as well. We came here for our 2 year anniversary. The staff was nice and accommodating but it took them a few minutes to give us a menu or check in with us. The food itself was amazing! It did not look as vibrant or flavorful as it tastes. I think the Gnocchi was our favorite. read more

We went for tapas at Blood & Sand. Located inside a hotel it was a little hard to find but worth it. We shared Elk tartare ( magical); tater tots (amazing); lamb chops (delish); duck (marvelous); sardines served in Aton with crackers (loved it); olives; and Paella. The food was truly excellent my only complaint was the service. Our waiter was nice but he disappeared for long stretches. Drinks were great as we had heard. We did skip dessert as they were out of the dessert we were pining for a lavender dish. Still if I was in town I'd give it another go. read more

My first time at Blood and Sand, I've never heard of the restaurant. I was in the area with a friend, and she's heard of it and wanted to give it a try, so I obliged. It's a very pretty upscale looking place, very nice and clean, and the bar tender was pleasant and recommended a drink to my friend who wanted something fruity. I'm not sure how the food was because we didn't try it, but I did look at the menu and saw food that I could have tried. If in the area again, I'd give it another try. read more

I have to start by saying I really hate Indian food. It's just not my cup of tea. Tonight we were ordering from one of our usual places and I even told my husband what I wanted. He ended up disregarding the entire order without my knowledge to just order whatever he wanted from you guys. I mean he does know what I like anyway. He didn't even tell me anything after delivery and plates everything, serves it, and I was like wtf is this. One bite and I was like, holy f, I love this place! Walking up to the restaurant my girlfriend and I noticed the smell before we were sure of where the entrance really was. The start was a bit rough as the table we were seated at after reserving was not clean and had something sticky spilled across it, but our server was very attentive and got it cleaned up. We both went with the 5 course tasting menu so we got to try a lot of amazing food! We thoroughly enjoyed every dish and even took some risks like the rabbit rillettes and the langostina a la plancha (shrimp.) My fiancé and I came in for his birthday, we like to try nice spots in the city for special occasions and this has been on the list. It's definitely special occasion, I think I walked out of there spending around $400 for the tasting and drinks. This is a SPLURGE spot. We made reservations and didn't feel rushed at all. It was a week day and didn't seem to busy. Service was okay, it didn't feel super attentive, but our food came out warm and in pretty good timing between courses. They did treat us to champagne for my fiancés birthday which was nice. The food was good....we've definitely had better at this price point. Honestly, it would be more cost efficient to just order what you want off the menu instead of doing the tasting. I'm not sure we'll come back. Blood and Sand was such an exciting and elegant dining experience. We made reservations for 2 at 6:30 on a Friday night. We were seated immediately upon arrival. Our waitress was over shortly to take drink orders and answer any questions. My husband started with the house blood and Sand cocktail which had whiskey, cherry heering, cocchi di Torino, and orange juice. I had a glass of cab franc from California. We enjoyed our drinks while deciding on what to have for our dinner. We opted for the ala carte menu since my husband did not want to do either the 5 nor the 10-course tasting option. We chose 2 items to start with: * Wild boar carnitas which was served with some field corn tortillas, marinated onions, queso fresco, lime and cilantro. Very flavorful and delicious! * Bluefin carpaccio drizzled with kabosu-shoyu vinaigrette, bottarga, Aleppo pepper, horseradish and some yuzu oil. The dish was magnificent, I could have eaten this by myself but I shared. For our main entree, I opted for the seared top American wagyu strip steak served with some wild mushrooms, asparagus, fingerling potato in yakiniku sauce. Also a generous sprinkling of sesame seeds over the strip steak. I asked for medium rare. My husband had the duck. He gave me a taste and I approve! Sometimes, ducks can taste gamey but this one did not. Both our entrees were very flavorful and well-prepared. I honestly have no complaints. We ended our dinner with some beignets which were also quite tasty. The espresso sabayon was so good, I could have had it on its own for dessert! I also ordered some Chateau Laribotte Bordeaux for an after dinner drink while my husband finished a rendezvous girl cocktail (rye whisky, cinnamon maple, burnt orange, aromatic bitters, orange bitters and housemade cherry-vanilla bourbon bitters). As far as the ambiance went, the place was elegant. We didn't dress up too much but I wouldn't walk in here with jeans and a t-shirt either. There were chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, nice table spacing that you are not overhearing conversations happening at nearby tables and people were generally mindful of their conversation volumes (i.e., no one is obnoxiously loud). Service was great. Our waitress was attentive, stopping by on occasion to ensure we were not in need of anything for too long. We went here for a birthday dinner with my family, and it was a perfect place for an intimate, unique dining experience, I'm a sucker for a tasting menu, and the one at Blood & Sand did not disappoint. Very unique and intentional flavors from both the food and the cocktails. And the service was the cherry on top. Our waitress Jelly was warm and welcoming, and gave great recommendations. Wanted a cool dining experience to celebrate getting into med school and this place delivered! We got the 10 course meal and it was possibly the best meal of my life(I've also never spent 200 dollars on a meal though). Everything was so unique and really tasted like something special. I don't even like beets or radish but I loved the beet tartare! If something sounds interesting, I'd recommend trusting the chef! I had a lot of different things here that really made for a fun experience. The atmosphere was really nice. From previous reviews I wasn't sure if some of the people were going to be stuck up, but everyone was pretty laid back and welcoming. Was feelin fancy so tried this restaurant! Defs had a fancy but warm vibe to it. My partner and I got the 5 course tasting menu, and tried a bunch of dishes through that. We also tried the truffle tater tots and those were really good. My favorites were the mussels (my absolute fav, 5/5 so flavorful), the flatbread (great flavor and lots of fun greens) and the black pepper lobster (yummy but defs small portion), and the lamb chops (thought the veggies were sooo good w it). My partner also really liked the mussels, crab bisque and the wagyu steak. We got both desserts - the beignets and the pistachio w white chocolate crème. They were decent on their own, but I had bites of both together and that was even better. The drinks were fire - I got the Blue World and my partner got the Blood and Sand special. My son & I enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu. We both started with the Fritti Misto. The calamari was tender and scallops were perfectly cooked. For the second course, we both enjoyed the Watermelon Gazpacho as we also had the Wagyu Brisket Poutine. My son had the Babette Steak while I had the Elk tenderloin; we both agreed that the Elk was far superior. Dessert consisted of the dark chocolate torte for my son and I had the ladyfinger tiramisu; both nice finishes. For drinks, I started with a Short Day and Long Night while my son had the Eye of the Tiger. We both agreed that the first is worthy of a reorder but the second lack any last of the Scotch.
