This is a wonderful spot, it feels kind of like a family friendly biker bar. Given that vibe, you might not expect it but the food is absolutely fantastic! I highly recommend the lobster roll, it's one of the best around. Also, the onion rings, which at so many places are lack luster, are amazing here. Their pizza is also really great. Though I've never had it, I'd be doing a disservice not to mention the steak, which I've heard is of such a quality that it puts much more expensive restaurants to shame. The staff is also great--just the other day the bar tender tipped me off to Long Trail Limbo IPA which is now one of my favorite beers. While it's a fun bar in general, you really should get some of the food when you're here. It's too good not to. read more

Good atmosphere in a historic building which creates a pleasant atmosphere. The burger I had was good and it was huge.

Beer in bottles only - no beer on tap, which was disappointing. Burger, Reuben and fries were all average at best. Not as good as we expected it to be after reading other reviews. Next time we'll go back to the Moroccan restaurant instead. read more

Food and service were great. Had the RI clam chowder and fried oysters. The chowder is the way is is suppose to be. Some of the best I have had. The oysters were recommended and the waitress was right, mild, fresh and cooked just right. The only thing negative was we sat on the porch and the table was covered with sand and was not cleaned for us. Maybe I am being a little picky since it is a bar. I would go back. read more

not thrilled. first - CASH ONLY. though we saw no signs saying that and were only told at the end of our meal. my dad and I stopped for lunch. we were starving. sat for awhile before even getting offered water. I ordered the Ahi Tuna wrap, raw, no tomato. It came medium, with tomato. Not very flavorful. My dad's cheesesteak was bland and he didn't even eat the bread. Overpriced for what we got, and the options were slim. service was minimal. she was straight faced and businesslike. no smiles, not welcoming. clearly a place where you're treated well if you're a regular. i didn't even bother with the beer list as they only had bottles. disappointed and won't be returning. read more

After driving by for many years, we finally went in. We love it. As others have said, it is what it is --a kind of dive, but a great dive. Great burgers, sandwiches and steaks. And honest drinks. A great place to relax. Great prices too. The waitstaff is as nice as can be and aim to please. Do remember that they only take cash, but there's an ATM inside. read more

I have been to the monkey farm many times and if you are waiting for service understand that many come for just drinks and conversation or to watch a game. Every place is different and Since this place gets busy fast let the server know first thing if you are there to eat. This place is a great mix of locals and visitors and fun for all. read more

Wow! This is my first time in Old Saybrook. The Monkey Farm is fantastic! Russ and Dave totally dealing with a packed bar. Friendly patrons all around. Bam Bam shrimp & the fish and chips were outstanding. Apparently Tito's and soda with lemon is the go to drink. They are making them 10-1 over anything else. Oh and mixed drinks in a pint glass are standard, not a special request. read more

I made my first visit here yesterday afternoon with friends who live in the area and are regular customers. We sat at the bar and stayed for several hours enjoying drinks. Service from the bartender was attentive and friendly. The Monkey Farm is my type of place and I am already looking forward to a return visit when I am next in Old Saybrook in the Fall. read more

Cash only and seat yourself is a pain. Seating would be easier if waitstaff were on the ball. We waited 30 minutes for the check and finally had to find someone to bring it to our table. Never got drinks we ordered and last but not least food was very mediocre. Goodbye. read more

Lots of locals love the farm, but it's for lack a better option. It is an eyesore at the end of main street, and it's just as run down on the inside. Don't expect to have too much to drink, our party was shut off after one shot and two beers in 2 hours. Then we were asked to leave because we questioned (very politely) the decision to cut us off. We weren't rude to any customers or employees. It was embarrassing for all of us as I had been catching up with old friends I ran into. They couldn't provide any reason for our dismissal, bartender must have been having a bad day. Don't think I'll be returning. And on top of it all they only accept cash, no tabs. read more

I ate at this restaurant awhile ago with my wife and granddaughter. I ordered the bam bam shrimp what i was given was saturated with mayonnaise. I complained to the waitress and nothing was done. I scrapped as much of the mayonnaise of as was possible but i left half the order. I called three days later and I talked to a manager and got no satisfaction. My wife's meal and my granddaughters meal was good. When a customer complains about a dish that was saturated management should not assume that their food is perfect. There was not a accurate description of this dish that would explain how it is served if there was I would not have ordered it. read more

I have not had anything here except the wings. They came as fried chicken with sauce on the side. I am happy the sauce came on the side because the sauce was so hot. I loved the sauce but I did not want it drenched in it. The wings are so crispy drove them 40 minutes and they were still crispy. read more

Let me just say, That you guys just plain ROCK!!! This past summer, I had a surpise party for my fiance. I had to make it look like a motorcycle run and invited as many friends as I could. Needless to say, I couldn't get the cake and they where more than happy to take care of that for me and I couldn't be more appreciative. We had an extraordinary turn out. Not one of us out of about 30 people had ever been there. Well , we put them on our run stop for the summer permantly. Service was outstanding and the food great. Fun atmosphere and the other patrons were very friendly.With that many people , we sampled a lot og the menu. Can't wait tYouo return . We just left monkey farm where we had lunch. A local got us a sample of the clam chowder. No flavor except an "off" fishyness. Go to donahues or the wharf in Madison for terrific clam chowder. Our waitress was almost surly, no warmth or customer service skills. We felt like we were imposing on her. We ordered two burgers. We asked for a side of thousand island dressing. She brought our burgers which didn't have tomato or lettuce, so my husband asked for that and I asked again for thousand island which she'd forgotten. She came back with lettuce, no tomato. we asked about the pickles which were supposed to come with the burgers. "Oh, we're out." Our burgers were supposed to be cooked Medium but they were rare/bloody. If our waitress had been halfway personable, we would have asked if she could please put our burgers in the microwave or something to cook them more, but she was so off putting, we just ate the edges of our burgers (the most done part) and are taking the rest home to finish cooking. My 15 year old daughter wanted us to try this place while spending the Memorial Day weekend in Old Saybrook (and because Luigi's was closed). Took a seat on the outside enclosed patio and was greeted by a server who brought water and my beer order. We ordered the chili cheese fries appetizer and two burgers. The chili chese fries came out a bit slowly but we enjoyed them. 45 minutes later .......... still no burgers and the wait staff never came back to offer me a second beer. The wait staff was overwhelmed, incompetent, or distracted at best. I asked for the check, paid the whole thing, including the food I DIDN'T get, including an 18% tip and got the hell out of there. Would love to comment on the food but never got it. A colossal waste of time.......maybe regulars get primo service.......I didn't and won't be going back. read more

We dined here the other night after finding out how few options there are open late night. Most restaurants in the area stopped serving at 9:00! Dave was our bartender and he was great- very welcoming and as attentive as he could be. He was very busy the entire time but kept us happy. We had the nachos and the French Dip. The French dip was missing the cheese but was still very good nonetheless. The place is a bit divey but that just adds to the charm with the exposed wood beams and many regulars that dine there. Not sure about the dart board they advertise as it's located right above a table and my aim is not that good. Good alternative for late dining but also a great drinking bar. read more

Place sucked a bag of dicks. Filled with old flabby men. Food was low quality. Service was unfriendly. Attempted to play the jukebox over and over with each song I chose being cut short by bar staff. So I decide to have fun with it. I will for eternity continue to use there jukebox just to piss them off. read more

We've driven past this place for years and finally stopped by for dinner one night....like a throw-back to an earlier time. Low key, casual and local. Dart boards and tv's inside with a really active bar, and seating inside and out on the porch for food. We had great dishes- not fancy but good burgers, chowders and fish. Our waitress looked about 15 and was not all that attentive, but all in all a fun night out with good friends. You can tell that it's a local hangout, everyone seemed to know each other and it was wonderfully loud and boisterous. One drawback is that they only take cash, so be prepared. read more

Will never go back to this bar again. My friends and I walked into the bar and because one of my friends was gay they kicked us out and told us we were not allowed in there. They tried to say we were too intoxicated which wasn't the case. Very disappointed with this. read more
