We headed here to rent Alpine Touring Kits to downhill and skin while we were in VT. We'd been in before on our last trip, but just to browse. The line at the ski/bike counter can feel slow, but it's because they are thorough. Having never skinned, they went through the boots, bindings, and skins with us, so we felt prepared for our trip. The team and OG was super nice and the quality of gear superior to what I'm used to when renting. They also have a great consignment section for those looking for secondhand gear. I've come into OGE in the past to buy gear for myself or as gifts. They will always honor a price seen elsewhere, which is excellent. As I have been skiing on and off over the last thirty years, not having lived in a place where I had consistent skiing until I purposefully moved to VT to do so, I've had a foot problem I'd neglected to fix until now. I get severe foot pain when I ski and the pain travels up my calves. I end up playing hot potato with my boots, trying to get the pain to settle down to a dull roar. In my regular shoes, I've worn orthotics since I was 14. The only footwear they can't go in are my ice skates, roller blades, and ski boots. I tried over the years to have orthotics made for this purpose in DC and they were always too thick and still painful. Again, not living in areas where I skied all the time, I think I just chalked it up to different factors that I couldn't control. I just skied as fast as I could to get on the chairlift to try and get the pain to go away. Not exactly the most enjoyable way to ski. This year, I decided I needed to do something different because the pain was so bad. Huge difference skiing long trails every weekend and wanting to challenge myself more and falling short. The pain had become debilitating. It was suggested to me to see a boot fitter. So I called to make an appointment at OGE to have my boots looked at. Sam L was my fitter and he listened carefully to my concerns. He looked over my boots and suggested we try to add foam in them initially, to see if that helped, as they were slightly too big. He said based on how that went, he could then make me custom ski boot orthotics. I spoke to my podiatrist in Syracuse who said to have OGE make them. A local PT also said to have a ski boot fitter make them, so I knew this was the right choice. The foam helped; I had an awesome ski day without much pain at all, but it was clear I needed more, so I made another appointment. In the interim, I was diagnosed with tendonitis and plantar fasciitis, so I got two weeks of laser treatments and massage for my feet. Sam explained the process to me and for the next 90 minutes, I had my feet measured, put on the machine to determine each foot's actual arch and shape, then to form the orthotics to my feet, get them made, get my boots reheated to mold to the new orthotic and off I went. Easy-peasy. I have now skied 4 times on these new orthotics. I have had NO foot pain. I've never felt more stable, more COMFORTABLE skiing ever. Supposedly I could put these in my blades and skates, but I'd rather save the money and get a second pair made, as I don't want to mess with my ski boots. This is your quintessential outdoor gear shop! OGE is conveniently located on Burlington's Church Street in the midst of all the other stores. This store has anything you could need for all of the outdoor sports/activities you can enjoy in this region. On the main floor you will find a TON of footwear, it's nice that they have a ramp to test shoes on. As someone that used to hike a ton in New York's High Peaks, the last thing you want is to find out you have a blister 3 miles into a grueling hike and your new boots are tearing up your heels. Skiing is a popular activity up here, the store sells a decent amount of ski and snowboarding gear. I also spotted bikes canoes, kayaks and so much more. There is often a sale tent outside the store, so that's worth looking through. I also found a section downstairs with either pre-owned or clearance goods. I personally love Yeti tumblers for keeping water cool, this store carries a lot of that type of inventory and some items were on sale. Even if you aren't sporty, there are still a lot of great shoes and clothing to check out here. The store is great, but a bit on the pricey side. Still it's nice to support local businesses and that seems to be the ethos in this area. read more

I ordered some tele-whacking boots on Amazon. At first, I misread my order confirmation and it said I had ordered 28.5 and not 30.5 mondo. I quickly found the seller info (Outdoor Gear Exchange) and called, not realizing it was 5:48pm EST. Hannah answered my call as they were still open until 6pm and was able to track my order, telling me the order actually reflected my correct size and they would be shipped the next day. I asked Hannah if it was possible to get a sticker since I'm prone to stick them all over the flat surfaces of my garage? Hannah told me no problem and a "couple" would be thrown in the box for me. I received my boots last night and of course was excited to open the box and check them out. Low and behold, there was two handwritten notes (zoom in on pic), along with an envelope with about TWO DOZEN stickers in there!!!! I won't even complain about the Sierra Nevada beer sticker () they included. I had walked down to Church St to pick up a prescription, when I saw the store, and stopped in to get something I needed. The clerk was very helpful regarding what I was looking for, and when I asked about a restroom to use before walking back, he told me that there was a staff restroom that he could let me use. When I checked out, I told the checker that I needed to use the restroom, and he told me that they didn't have any, but that there were outhouses around the corner. There were, but they were all locked. A business that refuses to make restrooms available to paying customer is one that doesn't need or get my business. read more

Overwhelming...in a good way! So much stuff packed into a big store. Whatever outdoor sport you happen to be into, you'll likely find what you need here. I was amazed by the shoe choices...everything from cool and functional flip flops to hiking boots that can handle the highest, most frigid, icy high peaks in the world. Admittedly, my favorite part of my visit to the OGX was Blue...the extremely adorable pup that was hanging out downstairs. I was mesmerized by him and got to enjoy his company for a bit. read more

The return policy is moot here and most likely a hustle. I proactively purchased the correct size dog life jacket after speaking with customer service. They encourage you to just purchase another one and return the old one, instead of doing an exchange. They try to give you a sense of urgency by stating that the items may fly off the shelf. First, I had to pay $25 to just ship the item across the U.S. to Vermont or whatever the shop is located on the East Coast. Then the company will accidentally lose the new shipment stated and will not want to be involved in helping you resolve the missing package. Later they will blame you for losing it and take your money without any items...I paid twice for the dog life jacket, and ended up with zero of them...shady mothersf. read more

If there was a store like OGX where I lived, I honestly would be so broke. This store has an AMAZING inventory for all sports/interests, I can't even begin to describe it. The first time I went, I was so excited about the first floor that I didn't even think to go to the basement to see all of the consignment gear. What an incredible idea! When I went for the second time, I just stumbled upon the consignment section and honestly, I spent double the amount of time there. I couldn't even believe that there were certain discounts on some of the consignment items depending on the color of the tag!! (Also, thanks to the staff for also labeling the names of the colors, it helped my little colorblind soul) The store truly has everything you need. Last year's gear at today's prices... that's their scam. They buy overstock, irregulars, and last year's models and then try to sell at full or still not worth it price. My credit card company's "price rewind" benefit alerted me that there is almost always 10-80% less expensive for same items online including usually free shipping. Happy to support local businesses but not when they're blatantly ripping people off selling old/rejected merchandise at full price. That being said... the consignment shop is a great place to recycle and recoup from gently used gear that you no longer need and someone else would surely get enjoyment from.. read more

As new Vermonters we needed all the cold weather gear we could get. Downstairs they have clothing on consignment and sale items. Picked up 4 jackets, snow pants for a really good deal. On the upper level is the regular gear and the staff gave a lot of great advice on what was the warmest jackets and build quality. read more

My husband loves this store! If he lived closer, it would be his go to store for bike and ski gear. He has done both online and in-store purchases with very positive results. I also have had amazing results from this store. I love getting sale and consignment items that I would otherwise not be able to afford. I recently purchased a winter jacket that would have been over $300. for a mere $130.00! Love a good deal. We also have sold items in their consignment section. One of my husband items sold in a few hours! It is so great to have that store credit or cash to buy more items from them. :) I have read the reviews about horrible on-line service and wonder if it may be partly related to the Christmas rush. Always look forward to stopping here when we are in Burlington, which is about 6 times a year. They have great brands good selection and s fun bargain basement to boot! HOWEVER Will not be making this a stop again!! When we were there last my daughter and I were asked to leave our shopping bags and pocketbooks on a hook outside the dressing room before going in. Because we were together we just took turns going in and holding each other's belongings instead of following their procedure which I was instantly uncomfortable with. This demand, to leave shopping bags with hundreds of dollars of items and my pocketbook with my wallet, felt like my personal belongings were at risk (their procedure for leaving items is that you hang it on. Hook outside the dressing room, which is attended by one person who gods knows may leave to get another size for someone) and like they didn't value or trust me or my business... I was hesitant to buy from there out of principal but had a bunch of stuff I was tempted with. When we left I asked about this policy and he said it was because people were "shooting up in the dressing rooms." I then felt even more uncomfortable. Several months passed and we recently visited Burlington again in July. I had planned not to go in because of my prior experience but I needed a pair of shorts for the weekend and I like their brands. Temptation got the better of my principals. As I walked through I found a few other items and headed for the dressing room. this time I did not have shopping bags just a very small cross body purse that fit only my wallet and sunglasses so I didn't think going into the dressing room with it would be an issue. I arrived at the dressing room and observed a confused and stressed young man checking a line of people in and out. He looked fairly stressed it was a small line and a steady stream of people exiting at the same time. He was the only person attending the dressing room. I watched him scramble as people lined up on both sides of aisles and he tried to help the people exiting. When it got to be my turn he somewhat crossly told me that my bag was "too large" I would have to leave it outside I said I wouldn't do this but I would be happy to let him look inside it when I entered and when I exited. I voluntarily removed my wallet, keys and Ray-Ban case and opened it wide to show him that that was everything in the bag. He shook his head and said "you can't go in." I told him I was not comfortable leaving my purse, my (very expensive) wallet and it's contents with him on a public hook by the door and he looked at me and said you can't go in and took the items to try on from me. When I spoke with a manager he was aloof, repeated that that was their policy and asked what I would like him to do about it. He didnt seem phased by the rude delivery the attendant gave relaying the policy nor did he seem to care that the policy put the customer at risk. He also didn't seemed concerned to lose my business. If the store is very concerned about theft of their items and drug use then perhaps as a customer I should be concerned about these things when visiting. If they are unable to protect a $30 T-shirt of theirs from being stolen how confident should I be as a customer that they will guard my purse, wallet, glasses and shopping bags (my identity and thousands of dollars of items) on a small hook in an area that is very very easy to inconspicuously snatch these things from past a very frazzled distracted attendant. Given the flip and unconcerned responses I got regarding my own concern for my things I doubt that they would be too concerned about following up should my items go missing. Furthermore on a busy weekend there is no system in which to check your items so that when you exit you must show proof that this is in fact your shopping bag and purse- in other words you can exit and grab your items from the hook or pretend they are your items and walk away. An attendant who sees hundreds of people a day can't possibly remember every person's face to match with their stuff. I watched the flow for 5 minutes while waiting in line- I was not being unreasonable to feel like my items were vulnerable after seeing the process. I would warn customers to be cautious when using dressing rooms. As a business owner myself customer service is the top priority; I feel OGE's policy and flip rude attitudes towards my security are disrespectful and that they do not value my business (and I have spent thousands their over the last 3 years). I will not be shopping there ever again, nor will my family. Backcountry is a very respectable company with a great return and shipping policy and I look forward to sending all my outdoor business there. read more

Incredible customer service! Austin and Dan in the X-C ski section helped me find new X-C skis and boots that I felt comfortable with. They honored the store's 30-day try-out policy and allowed me to return two pairs. For the third one, Austin and Dan had figured out what I really needed--shorter, wider, back-country skis with metal edges. I needed new boots and bindings for those. They credited me for the skis and boots I had bought first. The third try was golden! I skied at the Trapp Family Lodge today and had a great time with my new Salomon 68 mm backcountry skis and Alpina boots! The skis and boots gave me enough stability, and I got my confidence back to snowplow down the hills using the edges. I can again ski in and out of the tracks. Thank you, Austin and Dan! Do I really need to review this? How many more 5-star reviews do you need to see before you just accept Outdoor Gear Exchange as the undisputed champion of outdoor gear shops? Outdoor Gear Exchange has just about everything. What's most impressive is that their prices are quite reasonable for new highend gear. Walk over to the used section, and you can scoop up a gently-used tent for a fraction of the original price. Want to save even more money? Go downstairs to check out their used clothing and outerwear. $300 for a $700 coat? Why not? Daybacks, fleeces, coats, shirts...you shouldn't have a problem finding something you "need" down there. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and there always seems to be somebody close by that wants to help you. I say "wants to help you" because you actually get that impression, instead of "gets paid to help you." Outdoor Gear Exchange makes you feel less like you're in a store, and more like you're just hanging out at somebody's house that just happens to have racks of great gear that they're willing to sell. Want to rent snowshoes? They've got them. They're something like $5 for a day. Want some cheap impulse items? You know you do, and they've got them. Want a flask or a wine glass made for the woods? They've got that. Want to bring your dog along? Go right ahead. I can't say enough good things about this store. I'm pretty stingy with 5-star reviews, but they've earned every last star. Oh, and they apparently have sample sales down at their old location. They bring in reps from a bunch of gear companies, and sell off samples at huge discounts. I do not recommend gearx.com as an online retailer. Ordered a full suspension mountain bike. Some of the component descriptions were vague, requiring a call to the shop for details. Also the advertising claimed free shipping, but the disclaimer about oversized items was not shown until items were added to the cart and checkout initiated. Delays in bike build were not communicated. Shipping information was not communicated. I paid extra money for FedEx Home delivery for better ontime arrival and damaged goods performance, but the shop shipped by the cheaper UPS ground anyway. Phone service and email reply from employees was prompt and courteous, however had the item description been detailed, shipping info provided, and build done in timely way (or at least notify me of delays) that correspondence should never have been needed in the first place. Overall it has been 18 days since an order was placed, and still no delivery. I'm in a large city in western mainland USA, nowhere with expected delivery delays. I will update this review with any other relevant information when my product actually arrives. Waiting patiently... read more

I was a good customer until i was banned for allegedly attempting to steal a tent. A guy, with a san francisco demeanor, made me sign a paper stating that i was banned. He found me at the bus stop and talked condescendingly to me while i signed to never return to Outdoor Gear Exchange for an alleged theft that i wasnt shown proof of.  Outdoor gear exchange banned me  hour later, two blocks away at  a bus stop. An hour before,  When i was  returning the false advertised consignment tent with missing poles that i purchased for $50; i wasnt confronted for any theft or wrong doing when signing my return receipt. It is a shame. I really liked the store. I spent hundreds of dollars on consignment sleeping bags and tents. The store became cut throat and apathetic, as if it was an affluent shoppe in manhattan or san francisco. If a store wants to change its clientele, then why sell consignment items that deflate in price...? They didnt provide proof or consider my side of the story. Price is high but way worth it. They have everything for Vermont! They have a down stairs with some more reasonable prices. The staff down stairs explained everything about exchanges and it sounds totally in step with what I needed visiting and being new here. I think his name was Simon, but he was very helpful. Buying expensive clothes and gear and knowing you can get your money back if you don't use it or its only worn once and you want to get some cash back or credit for other stuff...a treat for any visitor. read more
