Instead, she was excluded from the yearly summer recital and without honest communication or a satisfactory explanation. What makes this situation especially troubling is that the treatment she received appeared noticeably different from that of other students. As a family, we were left questioning whether bias played a role in the decisions that were made. While the studio may have its own explanation, the lack of transparency, fairness, and consistency raises serious concerns. Watching a child work hard, remain committed, and then be excluded was heartbreaking. No child should be made to feel less valued than their peers. Families deserve honesty, respect, and equal treatment, and unfortunately that was not our experience. I hope the studio takes a hard look at how it communicates with families and how it ensures that every child is treated fairly and inclusively. I'm a new dance mom but I did do my research and because my daughter started dancing at an older age - I wanted her to feel comfortable easing into a new sport. Dr. John Kwon's program to train dancers as athletes is unlike anything being offered anywhere. He gave each of our company girls an individual evaluation assessing their particular weakness and made individualized programs. Along with Marlene Hall's Therabar classes, the individualized athletic training seems a sure bet to take technical training far beyond years of traditional ballet class repetition. We absolutely love the Master Classes each week that keeps the fresh influx of ideas and choreography flowing. We were absolutely floored by the summer program where there were 60+ guest instructors all active in the industry and academic dance. We couldn't have gotten all that in any intensive anywhere even in LA. I thought my kid was just burning out on 20h/wk dance schedule but it turns out she was looking for a new level and for coaches that take her seriously as an athlete and an artist.

We've been coming to this ballet studio for many years, and while the instruction, teachers, and…read morecurriculum are absolutely amazing, the parking and drop-off situation is a nightmare. During peak hours--especially between 4 to 6pm on weekdays--the area around the studio becomes chaotic. Parents frequently block the red zone in front of the building to drop off or pick up their children, causing serious traffic congestion. To make matters worse, vendors are selling prepackaged food, fruit boxes, and other perishables directly from their vehicles--both in front of and behind the studio. This draws long lines of customers who often stand in the middle of the road, blocking parking spaces and making it difficult and unsafe for cars to get through. Even more concerning is the lack of supervision for children in the parking lot. Kids often dart out into traffic without looking, and drivers are forced to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting them. Many parents appear distracted and are not paying attention to their children's whereabouts. This situation has persisted for years and only continues to get worse. As much as we love the studio, the surrounding chaos and safety risks are making us seriously question how much longer we can continue coming here.

Our experience at other studios were, some kids took it seriously and some didn't. My daughter grew so much as a dancer at Variant Movement, training with Dani the owner. My daughter wanted to push herself and train to better herself and her teams. Her mentality shifted and watching her progress was amazing. Dani is so good at fine tuning and her choreography is exciting and showcases the kids strengths. She really cares and it shows. She auditioned and made a dance team and that had everything to do with Dani and her amazing team. My daughter felt so proud performing and representing VM and will forever be grateful for Dani.

Raise the Barre is run by a homeschooler with years of dance and theater experience behind her. It has a certain "family" feel to it but not at the cost of talent. The teachers know their stuff and work the kids hard but still manage to create classes filled with bursts of laughter and highly engaged students. Ballet and tap are what my girls do, but hip hop and other styles are available. And yes, boys are welcome! The school also does musicals and theater work. Small productions are put on in the adjacent intimate theater and bigger ones end up at places like the Attic. Participants range in age from younger primary aged kids to teens and even a few adults! There are also art classes and at times singing/choir is an option. The only downside is that, having grown from a home-based, word of mouth, pretty casual arrangement, it can occasionally fall down in the area of communication. But that's pretty minor in exchange for the atmosphere and the quality lessons.
