Since my last review in 2019, the Mucky Duck survived COVID, and I've had a chance to drag Gayle in here one, and visit a few times solo. The food and the draft beer selection is still great. Oh yes, I now have one of their personalized mugs (labelled EJB) that now hangs in honor with the rest of them over the bar. My next goal is the bring my Iowa State graduate brother in here, who had never heard of the place. Maybe Dad should join us, and with no lack of me reminding him about the Mucky Duck! read more

I drove up, thought about going somewhere else because I'm not really a fan of English food, especially prepared in England. But the Yelp! reviews were good, so I decided to give it a shot. I am very please I did. The service was wonderful, albeit I was the second one there after they opened. Since I was alone, I sat at the bar, and was greeted by extremely pleasant ISU students who work there. The fish-n-chips were cooked to perfection, which can be tricky when deep frying batter. Fantastic place for eating or drinking or both! Tea? They've got an extensive menu! Food? They have a terrificly fun and varied menu ranging from standard American fare to British favorites! Alcohol? This is a cool little bar and grill trying to pull off a British pub theme. The food fits the theme, but the overall vibe of the place doesn't really scream British pub to me. They do have a great beer selection and decent food though. Here's the food situation: I had the Scotch eggs ($6.25) with the hot mustard instead of the Branston pickle sauce and the vegetarian curry ($9). The hot mustard was good, but the Scotch eggs were disappointing. They were very salty, the eggs were over cooked, and the ground pork breading was dry. They delivered them to my table less than two minutes after I ordered them. This makes me think they came from a frozen bag or something. Can you even buy Scotch eggs in the frozen aisle of the grocery store? I honestly don't know the answer to that. Most of the food options hover around the $10 price range - even the burgers. The vegetarian curry was a lot better than the Scotch eggs. The curry had cauliflower, zucchini, potatoes, squash, tomatoes, and chickpeas and had a side serving of Basmati rice. I mixed the rice in with my curry dish and it was pretty good. Beer situation: 32 beers on tap, 56 in bottles and cans (I like to count things) German beers, IPAs, sours, a few British beers, but mostly American beers. Many of the beers on tap are brewed in Iowa or the Midwest region of the country. I had the Mistress Mistress Amber Ale ($6 for a pint) brewed right here in Ankeny, and it was quite tasty. If they distribute it in stores, I'm going to look for it - it was That. Damned. Good. I followed it up with a 12-ounce bottle of Smithwicks for $4.25 which I thought was a bit on the pricey side. The wait staff were very friendly, they took their time to explain the special of the day, the dessert special and the soup of the day. Can't say enough for the hospitality from the 3 different people I encountered. I was checked on often and even when they cleared my table they were very friendly. There's bar seating, and about 15 tables in this place. It was pretty full on the night I visited but the crowd wasn't too loud. There's music playing in the background but even it wasn't too loud. One last thing before I let you go. If tea is your thing, this is THE place to be. I counted 39 different varieties of tea. read more

Visited on Thursday for a late lunch. The place is small but was seated right away. There is an outdoor patio, too. Our server s prompt and friendly. I had the bangers and mash. Tucked away on the east side of Ames, the first glance of the building was interesting. However walking in I was pleasantly surprised by the instant British vibe it gave me. There was 4 of us that came on a not too busy evening. Getting a table was quick but the table itself was a little sticky. The menu had a plethora of food and drink options. I kept it simple and ordered what I came here for, fish and chips with a shandy! The fish and chips did satisfy the beast within my stomach but it did not blow away the one within my taste buds. The fish and chips were overall a little bit better than other restaurants that sell fish and chips in town. It was a little pricey but worth it. Overall my experience was a good one. It definitely felt like I was transported to a small pub in Brittan. This overall experience completely outshined the faults I had with it.
