We ate for the fruit time at Mucky Duck. The atmosphere is cool and reminds you of an English pub. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We were part of a party of 10 so they really went the extra mile to accommodate us in the small seating area. Our server was Kyle, and he could not have been any better at his job. Now the food. We ordered a Scotch egg because everyone was raving about it. It was good, but not sure what all the fuss is about. It is a sausage patty wrapped around a hard boiled egg. It was served with a spicy mustard and a relish that is kind of sweet and kinda sour. I didn't prefer either, which was disappointing because it need something due to the dry nature of the egg. Not saying it was bad, just ok. The wife got a Pasty with mashed potatoes and gravy. The Pasty was good too, but she felt it needed a sauce as it was dry also. She said the mashed potatoes were very good. Now I know I should have ordered something British, but I consider myself a Rueben connoisseur, so I had to order it. The sandwich was worthy of the price as it was a perfect amount of meat and bread. The flavor was different however. The dressing was something other than Thousand Island type. Again, it was not bad, just ok. I ordered cole slaw with it and to be honest, I would be surprised if it was made fresh. It reminded me of supermarket Cole slaw you can buy in a tub. Again, it was not bad, just ok. The best thing we had all night was dessert. We ordered it to go and the Sticky Toffee Pudding was worth the wait. Overall, I will eat there again and would give this a 3.5, but can't seem to figure how to do that. I'll end with this, which was mentioned before, the staff is excellent. If the service had been bad, I probably would not hurry back. read more

Stopped in for lunch on Saturday. Wow, what a great atmosphere! This place is small and not much seating, and they were packed. We were able to grab a table and decided to try several items and split them. I ordered a Porter(sorry don't know the maker) and it was pretty decent. Decided to get the Sausage Rolls with mustard and pickle spread. The Sausage Rolls are excellent with the puff pastry. Excellent flavor and the pastry was nice. I don't know what to make of the pickle spread, it was different. The mustard was very spicy, great, but use caution. The Fish and Chips was fantastic. Lightly breaded and the cod fell apart. Excellent! The chips were big like steak fries and were OK. The Bangers and Mash was an interesting dish. The sausage and mash with gravy was very good. The potatoes were light and the gravy had good flavor. The Steak and Guiness Pie was fabulous. I added some mash and it was comfort food heaven. This went very well with the Porter. The beef was tender with potatoes and carrots. Excellent dish. Came with a nice puff pastry. The Heinz Baked Beans were nice with tomato sauce, very light for lunch. The service was excellent and very friendly. Even with a packed room, they were very good. Great British Food, Wonderful Atmosphere. I would definitely go back to the Mucky Duck! read more

This place is great! The food is excellent and 95% of the staff is great (watch out for the rude woman who doesn't smile and seems grumpy about being at work). We went for four meals in a row, tried different things across the menu, and everything was a success! If you have little ones, there is a rubber duck challenge for them to complete and win a prize at the end of their meal. The owner is friendly and very nice to speak with. You can also buy many great UK products here that are difficult to find other places (Hello, Jelly Babies!). Don't even get me started on how wonderful traditional tea service is and the English beer selection. This place is DIVINE!!!!! My husband and I had lunch at The Mucky Duck. This is the 2nd time we've been here and we come just for the fish and chips. My husband is from the UK and it's hard to find fish and chips comparable to that in the UK, especially when Iowa is landlocked! We ordered the medium size, which is still very big piece of fish. (I had ordered the large on our 1st visit and it was too much, I couldn't finish it.) We are happy to come back again and again for this meal. If you've never been here before, it's very small pub. You seat yourself at any one of maybe 10 tables, or you can sit at the bar. They sell UK food items behind the bar such as hobnobs and jams. They also have a wide selection of teas. We finished our meal with a sticky toffee and ice cream. They also offered spotted dick but with iced cream not custard. I think both times we went the service was abit slow or erratic but it was kinda charming and nothing that would stop us from returning or recommending this place to anyone else. read more

Have driven by it for many years and wondered why they would have the name of a popular place in FL, and couldn't quite imagine walking into a bar and grill inside a shuttered Casey's. But so glad I finally did! Visited UK for first time a couple months ago so now have a love and interest in "British Pubs" after visiting 26 of the across the pond. I had been wanting to go to this place for the longest time and finally the time I get to do it was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, I am here to say that it was everything I wanted and more, despite the circumstances. We were seated in the patio, which is dog friendly as long as you keep your puppers on a leash and in control. The servers were nice, everyone adhering to public safety measures and keeping a good attitude. I ordered the cornish pasty (don't be like me and embarrass yourself by saying it how it looks, it's "pahs-tee"), the rest of my group ordered the fish and chips. Yum! I loved the pasty, it's huge, the crust is buttery and rich, and the meat filling was hearty and flavorful. The fries were superb! I could eat so many of them. I didn't try the fish and chips because I'm not a huge fan of fish anyway but the others who were with me seemed to like it. The only bad thing was that they were out of my original choice, the chicken Tikka Masala, but I hope to come back to try it. Service was quick, too, and the food tasted like it was made freshly. Great food and service! We started with the Scotch Egg and English Poutine. Both were delicious! I tried the the German Platter for dinner and it had a nice variety of meats, mashed potatoes, kraut and cabbage. I really liked everything, but thought the schnitzel and cabbage were especially good. My meal and the apps paired nicely with the Burnout Brown Ale from Firetrucker Brewery in Ankeny, IA. My husband ordered the fish and chips for dinner. The cod was good, but the batter was slightly doughy and thick. While the batter had a good flavor, it was not a favorite here. We ended our meal with the Sticky Toffee Pudding and it was excellent! We enjoyed our meal here and it was fun trying some different foods then we typically eat. read more

We recently got a chance to visit the Mucky Duck again with friends. It's still amazing, like we thought the first time. Irn Bru (a Scottish soda) and their tea list brought us all the way from Cedar Rapids the first time. Now we still live a bit far, but it's still worth the hour trip! The first time around I had their bangers and mash which had a great sausage recipe. This time, I was expecting to repeat, but I had to try their new German plate and was not disappointed. They really know how to do sausage right and the plate had a perfect blend of offerings. My wife wholeheartedly approves of their fish & chips while a friend swears by the pork vindaloo. Really, they seem to have something for everyone. I've always had great service, whether in the pub or when I come upon their truck out at events sometimes. read more

I was intrigued by seeing a place that served authentic British food right outside of the metro! So I had to check it out! First off I am in love with the low key, laid back feel!! It's so welcoming! My husband wanted to try their wings and they are also good! Served naked and so full of wonderful smokey flavor! I had to try Fish and chips, at an authentic British pub and it was delicious!!! Super flaky with a perfectly crisp batter! It was served with a delicious tartar sauce. The chips(fries) were delicious and well seasoned. My husband ordered the Guinness Pie, and I stole a few bites and it was amazing!!! Super rich and not overpowering with beer flavor! It was packed full of steak and served with an airy puff pastry. He got a side of sauerkraut and he said it was delicious (and definitely not out of a can( that I didn't try). We finished our meal with spotted dick (so funny to say but delicious)!! It's almost like a bread pudding with currants and a slight orange flavor, served with ice cream. They have an extensive drink menu and an even more extensive tea menu! You can get their teas hot(by the cup or pot) or iced. They have a wide range from herbal to super high end teas. . I wish it was closer because they actually do a traditional tea time with tea and scones!! I finally decided on the Mango mist iced tea and it was very refreshing!! They have a very VERY lengthy menu with a lot of seasonal stuff they don't actually have in stock so if they condensed the beer and food menu or even updated it seasonally I'd give it a 5. The Mucky Duck Pub is located right off of US-30 in Ames, Iowa, so some people may overlook it since it's a good drive from the Iowa State campus. It seems like a random location, but the pub with the little castle in the front, is definitely worth a stop. Four of us arrived at Mucky Duck's for dinner on a Friday night. The restaurant is very small, and as expected, packed. The interior is quirky and has a lot of character. There's a bar tucked in the back. Due to the limited amount of seats inside, we requested a table on the patio. Did I mention the patio is heated? Our waiter gave us menus and the first thing I noticed was that half of their bulky menu is tea. Tea options galore! If you get a thirst for tea, Mucky Duck is the place for you. I didn't even know so many types of it existed! There's no doubt that you can bring out your inner Brit with a nice little cup of tea. For our entrees, I got the Battered Banger (they give you the option of getting 1 or 2) and a side of mashed potatoes, my boyfriend got the Steak and Guinness Pie, and our friends got the Bacon Cheddar Burger and the Grilled Chicken Salad. Everything was reasonably priced, but the food quality was average to me. The battered banger's breading was soft and a bit mushy...I expected it to be crispier around the banger (sausage). The mashed potatoes and gravy were nothing stellar. They were good, but I would go elsewhere for better mashed potatoes. I tried one of my boyfriend's chips (basically steak fries) and I was also unimpressed. He did however enjoy his Steak and Guinness Pie. The burger and salad were like any other ordinary burger and salad. No complaints but at the same time, none of the food stood out to me like I expected food at a British joint would. I think the next time we are back in Ames, I will probably pass on the Mucky Duck and try another restaurant. This place just doesn't have a "wow" factor for me. read more

We went here after doing our usual errands in Ames and we were amazed! Great atmosphere they have created, especially for being in in the Midwest USA. There were so many classic English dishes it was hard to choose. The chicken and cheese pastee was just like you'd receive while in the UK. I could eat those every single day. The location used to be a gas station combined with the restaurant (then known as The Chip Shop), but the gas station portion is now gone and they have done some nice renovation to the interior of the restaurant. They also added a great little bar with some awesome UK beer and cider selections, along with occasional casks of a microbrew from Reinbeck, IA that has some really tasty beers. My husband spent some time growing up in Ireland, and he is picky about fish and chips - and these are as close to the fish & chips in Dublin that he has found. I love them, too! They also have a nice selection of candy and goods from the UK, which he loves as well. They also have a great tea selection and some awesome scones and English muffins.
