If you like ginger beer-based drinks, this place is a must. I had a dark and stormy (they call it a Black Flag here) and the ginger beer is SPICY and the rum tasty. They sell growlers of their house-made ginger beer and I regret not getting one. The vibes are fantastic, the barkeeps are friendly and attentive, and the clientele (at least on the Saturday night I went) skewed older compared to much of STW. I felt comfortable visiting alone and just vibing and people watching for an hour before my event started, and I'd come back again in a heartbeat.

My Moscow Mule at The Mule Tavern!

I've been wanting to go to the Mule Tavern for a while and this past Friday it finally happened. When we went in we were welcomed with a light quirk and kitschy decor which was fun. I wanted to make my visit here to be somewhat themed and wanted to get a Moscow Mule to drink. We ordered at the bar for our drinks. When we looked at The Mule's menu online they had a fair amount of menu options for food but actually being there the options have significantly diminished. But we made it work. I got some of their soft pretzls with hot mustard which was awesome. We also got an order of the cheee and potato rollup which we dipped in sour cream. That was something that we liked the best out of the two food dishes. My Moscow Mule wasn't bad. My sister in law is all about these mixed drinks and always orders them when we go out to eat. She has a real knack for ordering good ones at the right time. The Mule's version was okay but just didn't quite have that vivacity that my in law is so good at having an instinct and pallet for with crisp freshness and briskness she has taught me to look for. The Mule has plenty of beer options too but most of those are in bottles and cans which is fine. The Mule just from my casual people watching seems to have a loyal customer following which is good to see. It is a pretty cool place to kick back and relax time and time again. I'd love to return and explore more of their mixed drinks!

Classic Mule with house made ginger beer... delish!

I've been here a few times now and am in love with their ginger beer. Most recently I came in with a friend who'd never had a Moscow Mule... now is that possible. Well, we fixed that with quite a few Mules! She loved them so much I took a growler to her for a dinner party the next day. It's super dark in there so don't be surprised if you walk out on a sunny day and a blinded by the light! There is some crazy, funky decor going on. Lots of random art on the walls and some super creepy clowns in the corner. The bar staff was the same person the last few times I was in. She was super friendly, appropriately attentive, and makes a bomb Mule. The food is pretty random and quirky... White Castle Burgers! This may just become my most frequented neighborhood bar ;-)

Dive-y atmosphere, good drinks, nice bartenders. Looks fun for the groups that were there.

    Nachos. Ginormous. Delicious.

Great house made ginger beer. Great house made tonic water. Great owner/bartender. Yes, great nachos too. All of the above. Had a vodka mule. A gin mule. A Pimm's cup (aka summer in a glass). A Tito's, tonic and lime. These drinks were all excellent.....my fave was the vodka mule. One of the best I've had for sure. We brought home a growler each of ginger beer and tonic bc they were so good. This area of South Tacoma Way (STW) has been revitalized but not homogenized by owner/operators like Sam who have a good business plan (IMHO) and are here for the long haul. Craft cocktails without the craft price. We love supporting local breweries, but he has expanded our horizons to support local establishments with something unique or special to offer - which is exactly how I would classify The Mule; uniquely familiar. Bonus coverage: TouchTunes. DD water station. Nobody with stupid hats.

It's a small place so definitely show up when they're about to open (4pm) bc it'll get crowded by then! Their seating is small so the booths are really for 2 ppl. We were a group of 3 and made it work! Our server was nice and patient with our questions! He said they do this "Christmas pop up bar" during the holidays and fully revamp their menu to be holiday-themed. Everything will be taken down and full menu back in January. I got the Christmapolitan which was lovely! My friend got the cocktail that was named from the Die Hard movie, "Yipee, kai-yay MF" lol. It was pretty good and came in a cute Santa mug with only Santa's bottom half The popcorn chicken was crispy and juicy! Their fries are BOMB, loved the crispiness of it. I got the hot chicken sandwich and it was crispy but kinda got messy and saucey towards the end...overall, pretty good food for what we had and drinks. For the holidays season, they have mugs and shot glasses for purchase to take home.

When I arrived, there was no greeter or host present. I went to the empty seat, briefly set down my coat, and dropped off the birthday gift. When I returned to the seat moments later, a member of the wait staff approached me and said, "What do you think we are doing? We seat people here." I asked whether that was how customers are typically greeted. She then stated that I had "tons of privilege" and directed me to leave the bar, including while I was standing near the door waiting for my friends. I understand that businesses have seating policies, but in this instance there was no clear signage or staff guidance upon entry. The situation was handled in a way that escalated rather than clarified the issue and detracted from what was intended to be a birthday celebration. Added after response from owner: You are certainly free to report your side of the story. I was greeted by your staff with the line, "Who the hell are you!" I asked, "Do you greet all of your customers that way." She then berated me and told me that she does if they just walk in and skip the line. Like most bars, with no one present at the front I assumed bar seating was open. Upon greeting my friends I took the seat. In regards to threatening remarks, the only threat I made was that I would leave a review. I used no harsh language and proceeded to the front of the restaurant to wait for my friends who decided to cash out. Your staff member proceeded to continue to berate me and tell me I would be trespassed if I didn't leave the restaurant and stand in the rain. I did leave while she continued to scream at me. Since I did not have context for what you described a simple, "Hi, we seat at the bar here and this is someone else's seat" would have been a great way to greet me. Don't assume I had bad intent just because I was trying to patronize the establishment. I highly suggest you read your reviews and quit attacking your patrons. Based on what I have read you have a serious problem with staff behavior. You spend all of your time on here defending bad practices instead of improving your service. I am happy to say that I will never patronize your business. In addition you lost 14 other customers due to your actions. I was told I must have privilege just to walk in to meet my friends at a bar. You have a clear over inflated sense of self worth to assume your bar is so great that treating customers this way will keep you in business. Best of luck, and you are correct, a place where staff greet you by yelling at you is not a great fit for me. It likely isn't for others as well.

She still said it was good overall. I ordered the Scarlet Rosemary (chicken and homemade pasta), and it was really good. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the sauce was fantastic, but the only problem was; there wasn't enough of it (sauce) and when the dish cooled as we ate, you couldn't taste the sauce much. About 7-10 minutes after getting our food, my friend took a bite of my pasta and said "I don't taste any flavor at all" and I realized I was mostly tasting the chicken at this point and I was sliding the pasta in the very small bit of sauce on the plate. She was super nice, our waitress too. The place itself is very cute, super noisy (be mindful if you have hearings aids or are prone to sensory issues because it is CRAZY loud - so much so that they have noise reducing panels all over the ceiling and walls). It's very much a romantic aesthetic but the tiny tables become a nuisance when they bring you a plate per food item (steak and fries come separately, etc). The food itself is where we were kind of... disappointed is too strong a word, but something nearing it? We ordered the bread (which should never be $7 but here we are), the French onion soup, the steak and frites and the scallops. I'm a Spaniard so I'm very used to carne en salsa de pimienta, which I feel is what the steak sauce was meant to be. It was, don't get me wrong, it was just pepper on steroids! It definitely wakes you up!! It was missing some other spice or herb that I couldn't quite place but it wasn't bad at all, just definitely strong. Personally, the steak was well cooked but my husband said it was too dry for medium. The fries were very tasty but we are still team duck fat, and the soup was okay, but we've had tastier. Our main gripe was with the scallops. Keep in mind that the scallops were $47 (the steak was $45). The scallops were served over a bed of lentils and radish slices for some reason. Well, lentils, radishes AND ginger. By ginger, I mean all of the ginger in all the worlds' countries. Horseradish could give this dish a run for its money in the nasal clearing department. We didn't understand the almost Indian flavors in tacoma-french cuisine. It didn't pair well with the scallops and the rest of the menu, honestly. We couldn't eat it so basically we paid $47 for 5 scallops. Lovely that financial journey for us! If you're into sensorial challenges, both auditory and gustation, then Corbeau is the place for you! It's a nice place for a fancy looking dinner, but you won't be able to hold a proper conversation unless you're yelling. Also, don't be surprised - there's a 20% surcharge on every check.
