My experience with this company was most disappointing. I am a professional recording artist and…read morehave been for over 15 years with a good amount of success at radio. I hired this company to work a pop project at CHR radio. They did a great job at selling their company promotional campaign to me over the phone. We decided to focus on pop radio, small to medium markets. They chose 150 stations to promote to and in Bryan Farrish' own words, "these stations are very responsive, a few will pass but generally we have great success with them". Encouraging I thought. His salesperson insisted on the entire fee up front . This was a bit of a red flag to me as I usually stagger payments so you can call a promotion off after a while if it's not working. Still, this was a new relationship and I wanted to trust them. This was a BIG mistake on my part. I sent out 150 packages using labels they had sent me. This is usual practice. But I noticed that each label was addressed to "Attention CHR promoter". This was my second red flag. Traditionally, a radio promoter is hired because they have individual relationships with each radio station program director, so for a package not to be directed to a specific person made me very nervous. I called him and expressed my concern. "That's not a problem, if we don't know them yet we will get to know them quickly. Besides it's really all about how much they like the promoter, it has nothing to do with how they like the music" he said. Hmmm. very odd. This is a world I have not been in, I thought.... So after 3 weeks and 3 adds at radio stations, I called Farrish to push him to tell me exactly how he was promoting and why so few adds were coming in. Now I should say that there are no guarantees in this game, but being in the business for a while, I have always done due diligence before I release a project and usually know whether something is 'radio ready' ahead of time. In this case we had a very strong song so I expected a pretty good response. So when Farrish started dancing around trying to avoid my questions, I finally got him to admit that they were "on track for 17 adds". Well no, we were clearly far from that, but then he went on to explain that the way they get radio adds is not by selling the song to stations on its own merit, but by offering radio stations promotions and giveaways. These promotions are not to do with the artist but things like "American Express gift cards" etc etc, things the radio stations can offer their listeners as freebies. So in return, they sometimes add a song that that radio promoter is promoting. So when he told me that 'they are limited by their promotional giveaways', I was aghast! And he admitted that they could not get more than 17 adds as they have no more promotions left. Well, I thought about this over the next 2 days and sent an email saying "You explained to me that we had 150 responsive stations, you didn't mention to me that out of all those stations it would be impossible to get more than 17 adds!" I was furious. This was exactly half way through the campaign and I sent an email asking his company to immediately cease promotion and to refund 50% of my money. I received one email from him saying that they were doing what I paid them to do. I sent 3 more very firm, yet reasonable letters explaining that this was not the campaign I set out to do and had I known that this was what I was getting into, I would absolutely not have hired him to promote. Well, I never heard from him again. Nothing. Furthermore, I found out that practically nobody listens to the radio stations he was promoting to. It really was a complete waste of time. The bottom line is, I was way too trusting, and I should have known better. This is the music business after all, but I believe in professionalism. Big disappointment. If a wealthy amateur artist simply wants some vanity airplay, this company will happily take their money. Professional recording artists would do better with a company with strong personal relationships. They are more expensive but trust me, you get what you pay for. Finally, what I was so disgusted about was not that he refused to refund 50% of my money, but that he refused to communicate at all once I expressed disappointment! I am a reasonable man. Had he called me up and said something like, "It's really not our policy to refund, but I see that we clearly did not communicate well at the start, let's see what we can do to step up this promotion for you", I might have been somewhat pacified, but he clearly wasn't interested in keeping the customer happy. This is the number 1 rule in business. And don't tell me the music business shoud be any different!
