Restaurant Week at The Nickel in Hotel Teatro can best be described as The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Between our group of 12, we were able to sample nearly the entire menu. Originally, we were intrigued by the new chef and robust menu for RW (which they inexplicably paired down from 4 courses to 3 a few days before our reservation) - and if you stick to a certain menu combination, you can honestly have a great meal. The entire beverage menu is awesome; from the cocktails to the wine, beer, and spirit selection. Our main server Jameson was great, but the supporting cast of crew left us wanting/needing more from the staff overall. They seemed stressed out and/or unhappy. However, the opposite can be said of the man who greeted us at the entrance of Teatro. Before we dove into the menu, we shared a charcuterie board for ~$50. For context, our favorite charcuterie boards in town are between $20-30, engaging and delicious. This - or something comparable/better - was truly something that could be assembled in the meat and cheese aisle at Whole Foods, probably for the same price. It wasn't terrible, but it simply wasn't worth the a la cart cost. We did not try the farro salad or rebollita soup. Of the appetizers, we had the burrata, lamp pops, salmon crudo, and the beets. Bottom line: the lamb pops were the best appetizer on the table - by far. They were seasoned well and grilled nicely, and the accompanying arancini was delicious. The salmon crudo was refreshing, but the accompanying "citrus-infused" mascarpone lacked citrus infusion and seemed out of place. The beets were good. The burrata was inedible. It was a combination of bland cheese, flavorless mushrooms, and unseasoned lotus chips. It was truly the one plate on the menu that should be completed cut from the menu. Don't rework it. Just get rid of it. Our second course included the scallops, osso bucco, and the boar. The scallops and boar were, by far the best entrees on the table, between execution and value. The venison in the osso bucco itself was fair, but the accompanying risotto was an unseasoned letdown. The entrees were good to great. Bottom line: get the scallops or the boar. Both the scallops and the boar were well-executed and delicious. The osso bucco lacked seasoning all-around, from the venison itself (which was cooked perfectly) to the lackluster risotto. Somehow, no one at our table ordered the bolognese. We managed to sample all four desserts. Bottom line: order the tiramisu, or the chocolate cake - if you're truly craving the chocolate. The pumpkin pie ravioli was fun on the plate and would have been far more intriguing with a house-made whipped cream and pasta that wasn't tougher than the napkin in my lap. The custard creme brûlée was no longer a custard and it was served in a coffee cup, with a lone, unripe strawberry - which served me more as a glass charm than a garnish. The anticipated contrast was lost with an underwhelming sugar crust. The best - and fairly delicious - meal to order at The Nickel: lamp pops or beets, scallops or boar, and tiramisu. 3 out of 5 stars overall. I think we'll be back. There was enough in the good to be excited about, but it really seems as though RW took a toll on a new chef and his staff. read more

Denver restaurant week at the Nickel was definitely worth the hour drive in blizzard like conditions!! Our server, Duncan, advised us about what was outstanding and we could not have been happier with the choices. The red pepper soup, the short ribs, the desserts were delicious. Solid joint, a perfect start to a classy night out on the town. The staff are professional and the drinks are strong and delicious. Food was beautiful and delicious, and generously portioned as well. The chef shows a lot of thoughtful restraint, with dishes being generally balanced and not overseasoned. In our brussel sprouts "small plate", each of the components was good, but a bite with brussels, pecans, and blueberries was truly next level. The "surf and turf" tartare was a play on a classic, which to me was an interesting culinary experiment. A very visually appealing one at that. I'm not sure if the smoked salmon and beef exactly complemented each other, and I think it might have need a few more grains of salt. Personally, I was missing some mustard and capers--maybe I'm just a purist? That being said, we finished the plate anyway. Will definitely be coming back. read more

(Although, I do have to say my server was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.) Maybe this venue is better for dinner, or maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. I had a great lunch here. I tried the squash soup, which is dairy free without the creme topping. It was delicious and not too filling or rich. I had the farro entree with mint and carrots. It was a very light dish, but filling. It was not overly dressed and had a nice lemon vinaigrette to add some flavor. The carrots were a bit tough/dry, but not so much that I didn't eat them all. Throughout the meal I sipped on a couple of Bloody Mary's, which are a tad spicy and have a nice little salad of peppers, blue cheese stuffed olives, pancetta, a tomato and celery. The dessert menu looks good, but I was too full after finishing John V.'s french fries (which are awesome) to order anything. We loved the ambience and had a great server. We will definitely be back! ** This is strickly a bar review ** I saw a bit in Westword on the best beer flights and it happened to mention the Nickel for the COCKTAIL flight! I absolutely loved the idea and put it on my list of spots for a little pre-show drink. The hubby and I popped in before Sweeney Todd one Saturday night and I think we took the last 2 seats at the bar. We ordered a couple cocktail flights and were greated with 3 cute snifters filled with a Manhattan (with house brandied cherry!), Negroni & Pearfection cocktail. It was a wonderful idea because you got the full effect of each drink in a little package. We settled on the Pearfection and enjoyed a full size one after our sampler. I definitely found the cocktails made with care and a little something special in every glass. They have Social Hour every day from 4p-6p, which has special selections on wines and a couple bucks off beers. Plus a lot of the patrons at the bar were doing their charcuterie board. We even sat next to a guy who got what smelled like the best ribs I ever smelled! I've been here a couple of times now and it's been excellent every time. This space occupied a restaurant previously run by Kevin Taylor and all I can say is this is a much better replacement. We were just here recently for brunch and the strawberry cheesecake brioche French toast and brunch burger were delicious. The bottomless bar car looked amazing. I didn't try it but my husband made his own White Russians with cocoa puff milk, lucky charms milk, Cocoa Puffs, chocolate etc. they also have regular milk, almond milk, and a couple of others. So you could make a regular White Russian if you wanted. You can also do mimosas or bloody Mary's as well and the Bloody Mary portion was equally stocked with a variety of items. One of them was a cheese and meat skewer which we did not try but it looked delish. While I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at The Nickel last night, having read all the reviews I guess I was suffering 'anticipointment' -- the condition where the anticipation overwhelms the actual experience. The service was great and our server was very attentive, the cocktail was most excellent. The food was solid, but expected and good comfort food. I had been hoping for something that surprised me a little more. Did I mention the cocktails were excellent? I had a Nickel Negroni, presentation was excellent, and the end result tasted as good as it looked. I'd definitely reccomend dining at The Nickel, pre- or post-show (Nickel is in the Denver theatre district), but if you're used to NYC dining you may not have your palette pushed. I've visited The Nickel several times out of convenience prior to a show at the Performing Art Complex...and each time I give it a new look it disappoints. From the pilled white napkins (manager said they could cut up a black table cloth if I needed...my date and my black dress and suit were speckled with white balls from the cloth napkins) to the miss cues on drinks and perfunctory drop off of food...try anywhere else. BACKGROUND On my last trip to Denver, I stayed at the very charming boutique hotel, Hotel Teatro, in downtown Denver. I had gotten room service most of my stay, but I finally ventured around to check out the hotel, and found the delightful restaurant next to the lobby called The Nickel. THE NICKEL The Nickel restaurant, located in the Hotel Teatro was established in 2014, and the building is rich in Denver history. The building that now houses the hotel and the restaurant was originally built in 1911 and was called the Denver Tramway Building. The 8-story red brick building and adjacent 3-story streetcar barn were designed by prominent architects William E. and Arthur A. Fisher. They were commissioned by the president of the Denver Tramway Company, W.G. Evans, eldest son of Colorado governor John Evans. The building served as headquarters of the DTC. The architects' design incorporated a modern steel skeleton, Chicago-style office space, and a traditional Renaissance Revival-style edifice of glazed red brick and a striking glazed white terra cotta. Inside the lobby they used beautiful Tennessee light pink marble flooring and Vermont green marble base, along with white Arizona marble wainscoting. Great care was taken to preserve the historic detail and this elegant décor is still seen today at the entrance of the Hotel Teatro. The use of streetcars declined after World War II, and eventually ceased altogether, and the building was purchased by the city in 1971 and used by the University of Colorado, Denver, as their downtown campus. The school vacated in the late 1980's and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts purchased the streetcar barn portion of the Denver Tramway Building, but the tower remained unoccupied. In 1997 building restoration began under the direction of Astonbridge Partners and David Owen Tyrba Architects. The Nickel restaurant was named as an homage to the history of the building; a nickel was collected as fare for riding the streetcars. THE STORY & SERVICE EXPERIENCE I came downstairs from my room at Hotel Teatro, and decided to try The Nickel. First Impression: Absolutely GORGEOUS architecture and very well appointed. Then I saw the Bloody Mary self-serve bar AND the do-it-yourself Breakfast White Russian table. OH-MY-GOD PURE HEAVEN! I'm sure most people are aware of what a self-serve Bloody Mary bar is, but I had never seen a Breakfast White Russian. A Breakfast White Russian is a normal White Russian, but you can add any breakfast cereal you want. They had Captain Crunch, Rice Krispies, Froot Loops, just to name a few cereals you could add. Needless to say, I had at least three Breakfast White Russians, so I could try them all. YUMMY is an understatement. I took a bunch of photos of the amazing Bloody Mary bar, which I posted below. It was definitely one of the highlights of my stay; very, very cool. Breakfast was good, although, I barely noticed because I was so busy at the DIY Bar. My only complaint was the service. The place was pretty empty, yet I sat there waiting for service, and finally had to go up to the bar to get someone's attention on two different occasions. You know me enough by now to know that complaints about service are few and far between. I'll assume the service issue was a one-off. CONCLUSION The Nickel is VERY pretty and worth the trip just to see it, but they also have a DIY Bloody Mary bar that I thought was FANTASTIC! 4/5 RECOMMEND OF NOTE *Parking is drop off/valet. read more

My partner and I shared a cheese and meat platter for happy hour while waiting for the dinner menu, which starts at 5pm. For dinner we ordered the prawns and short-rib and a side of brussel sprouts, WOW! The prawns had a wonderful smokey flavor, the short-rib was so tender that it could be cut with a fork, and the brussel sprouts were delectable!!! This is the ideal place to go to for a pre or post theater drink or snack. I like the atmosphere of the room and the service was friendly. They have build your own charcuterie which you order sushi style. You can pick your meats, cheeses, veggies, etc, and quantities of each. I love me a meat and cheese plate and hate it when its filled with cheaper fillers like jam, bread, etc. On this, get all the meat and cheese you like! I will say, however, that their beef carpaccio was probably better than the charcuterie and gives you the same vibe. This was a bit different with egg on it, almost like carpaccio made with the vibe of a tartare. They don't have a huge selection of mains, but the short rib was legit. Very large, very tender, and filling. That said, I think it's all skippable as it didn't knock my socks off or anything. It's no longer the upper scale restaurant I used to enjoy treating myself to. After being seated it took nearly 10 minutes before we got water. Service from then on was spotty, though the server was congenial when he did show up. The food selection was fair, and what we ordered was good and well-presented, but they no longer offer made-to-order charcuterie or, more importantly, the ash-fried stuffed poblano pepper you could only get at The Nickel. The Nickel is very nice for being a hotel bar. They have a fantastic barrel aged Manhattan, and a fairly creative cocktail list. My girlfriend got a pear cocktail that was tasty as well. We ordered he chartreuse plate which is cool because it's one where you pick what you want, similarly to a sushi menu. They gave us good sized portions and it all paired together nicely. We had a great dinner in this restaurant! The restaurant was very quiet that night (it is a Monday in downtown). I was a bit nervous as this is my first time and I only go there because of the reviews posted here. But I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant! The service is great. The server is super kind and quick to respond to all of our questions. I can't comment of the atmosphere of the restaurant as we were the only table for that time period. We ordered crispy pork belly as a starter. It was unexpectedly good!! The skin is crisp but not too much. The fat melted in your mouth and the seasoning is supreme. The salad that came with it made the whole dish fresh and cut down most of the grease. The server highly recommend their special, the pork chop. We ordered it in medium, it was so tender and juicy and cooked perfectly right. One of the best pork chop that I ever tasted! The short rib is tender and yummy. You can feel/see/taste the impact Chef Thomson has made on this place -- his last stop was in SF at a wonderful restaurant called A16 and he has brought his passion, taste, meats, and menu to the The Nickel. I had the opportunity to stay in the adjoining hotel. The Nickel was fantastic; from the service to the quality of their food. Shout out to the decor, but more important the service from just stopping in for a to go cup of coffee to the White Russia Cereal Milk Bar (and other cocktail choices). Everyone was so kind, but not pushy or fake. The charcuterie, the croissant; every little bit I tried over the few days was fresh and delicious. For entrees I had the lamb shank: way too much condiments and the crust was a little burned, in addition I ask the waiter to replace the black peas with root veggies and he decided to bring it with English peas... I have been to he Nickel a couple of times now and this time today I think was the best. We went to breakfast before the ballet and it was delicious! I had scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, potatoes and a jalapeño biscuit. My friend basically had the same thing but biscuits and gravy, sausage and eggs. Everything tasted wonderful and was quick to come out. Our server though never visited our table to ask if we wanted anything else and presented our check. Let me start by confessing that I LOVE hotel bars and restaurants! I saw The Nickel on Instagram and that's what spurred me to come in for happy hour, and I've been coming back ever since! They do the best charcuterie and cheese board around, where you can choose from a variety of meats and cheeses. Really lovely produce. Their cocktails are original and tasty, and (dangerously) moreish. I have had lunch there and their Tuna Nicoise was delish. I knocked a star off as I went for brunch one time, and the biscuits were so rock-hard I couldn't even cut them. But I've not had any issues with any of their other food, and keep coming back time and time again! read more

I came here for restaurant week on a Monday evening with a friend. She picked the place and I made a reservation ahead of time. When we arrived the place was fairly empty. I normally don't expect restaurants to be at their best during restaurant week because they are so busy. I guess I had high expectations for the meal. We did the restaurant week menu and also shared a bottle of wine. My friend has been here for happy hour many times and said they had killer cocktails. The wine list was diverse and paired well with the food menu. To start we both tried the harvest salad which was fantastic and well dressed. For our entree she had the vegan loaf, I had the scallops, and we split the brussel sprouts. The service was okay. Nothing outstanding. Kind of slow. I tried to get the attention of our waiter multiple times after he dropped off the entrees to get salt and never could. The good: the brussel sprouts! They were cooked perfectly and I would come back just for the brussel sprouts. The harvest salad was also something I would order again. The bad: The scallops were undercooked AND under seasoned which is a very bad combo. My friend did not enjoy her vegan loaf either. The so-so: Dessert was nothing special. I had the chocolate cake and my friend tried the grapefruit tart. Both were pretty meh. Overall this place was really good and somehow really bad at the same time. I probably won't be back for dinner but I may come for happy hour + brussel sprouts. We had a great time until the end of the night. The four of us had dinner and drinks and when we were ready to go we asked the server to split our tab evenly four ways and gave four cards. First off, it pains me to give this restaurant a 2 star rating. For the most part, we had a great meal. I went in last night for dinner with my girlfriend for Valentines Day. We were looking forward to trying this place and excited about the menu. The place is great. It has a very nice atmosphere and we started the meal off with great service. We ordered the brussel sprouts, mussels, lamb, beef carpaccio and the desert special. Everything was fantastic. To further add to the experience, the chef brought us back in the prep area and let us play around with the liquid nitrogen used for the deserts. Very cool and my date was super impressed. When we got back to the table, the chef brought the desert out and, by accident, knocked a mostly full glass of red wine all over me. The glass was shattered and my baby blue and white dress shirt covered in red wine. Now this isn't the reason for the 2 star review. This was an accident and accidents happen. The chef was great and he apologized and obviously felt terrible this had happened. The reason for the 2 star review is that I went in for a really nice and fairly expensive Valentines dinner with my girlfriend. Wine was spill by accident and it wasn't handled appropriately at all. I'm surprised the GM didn't come out and apologize and ask what could be done to make this right. Instead the server came out and cracked a joke about it. When I got the bill, I looked and noticed that I paid for everything on it. For the troubles and price of dry cleaning, you're not going to at least comp an appetizer? Or just the desert? The Nickel has always been on my list of places to dine before a show and it didn't disappoint. The scallops were delicious but they didn't hold a candle to the magic that was in the Brussels sprouts. I have been on a mission to find Denver's best Brussels and I think these are it. They were marinated with jalapeño balsamic vinegar and sea salt. Very delicious. The service was fast and we made it to our show without any hiccups. I'm officially a Nickel super fan. In Denver's ever-changing culinary world, this place stands out to me every time I'm here. From their exceptional charcuterie boards and barrel aged cocktails to their creative brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, this is the spot I suggest to both out of towners and mile high natives. While I suggest dining/imbibing here any time of the day/year, I *extra* suggest you race over and make a point to try their restaurant week deal. $35 for a starter, a main course, a complement dish to share, and dessert? This is honestly such a steal, and the folks at The Nickel certainly don't scrimp on portion sizes or quality. I took advantage of restaurant week last night and started off with the chicken liver mousse. While I've been seeing this dish pop up around town, I've truly never had it like this. The mousse is served in a jar and topped with a layer of whiskey-infused gelatin and pickled mustard seeds. Such a rad texture combo! The jar is served atop a board with two slices of buttery Texas toast--this starter, when served with a jammy Pinot Noir, could be a meal in of itself. But wait! There's (WAY) more! Moving onto the main course, I really had no other option but to order the short rib. I tried The Nickel's short rib a few weeks back at a Yelp event and truly couldn't stop thinking about it. It was just as insanely delicious as I remembered--the flavors are complex, the meat melts in your mouth, and the micro veggies on top are just so dang cute. If you've never been to The Nickel or haven't yet tried the short rib, definitely make a point to try this stunning dish. My fellow diners and I chose to try the ultra trendy brussels sprouts as our complement dish. They were displayed beautifully in a ring around a large white dinner plate, and it was definitely enough to share between two or three people. Served with pickled shallots, peanuts, and anchovies, this dish is equal parts tangy, salty, and creamy. So good! We finished out the night with dessert--a s'mores pot de créme for me and strawberry shortcake for the rest of the table. Both desserts were served in mini mason jars that made me think of my Midwest roots. The s'mores jar featured a layer of thick chocolate mousse, marshmallow fluff, and a sprinkle of homemade graham cracker crumbles. Such a simple, sweet way to end a memorable meal. I really can't say enough good things about the staff at The Nickel. I've been lucky enough to have met and collaborated with both Chef Russell and Sean, and both are some of the kindest, most creative souls I've met in Denver. I love that they infuse bits and pieces of their background into the menu--there's a personal story behind each dish. I've only had incredibly knowledgeable servers--you can tell that The Nickel really takes the time to hire pros, and these pros really take the time to learn about each wine, cocktail, and dish that they serve. read more

Location: Prime area. Easily accessed on foot to and from several other popular locations. Parking: Parking is a total hassle, though there is a metered parking lot behind the building but it usually fills up. Ambiance: Simply delightful natural light during the morning hours which filters beautifully through the sheer curtains which lightly cover grand tall windows from booth to ceiling. Rather dull ambiance in the evening though. Its dimly lit at night which is ok, but its not very warm - just drab. Quality of Service: Impeccable service. I was unfortunately running late for my reservation. Although the Maitre'd did not call me as I was late, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived about 15 minutes after my reserved time and my table was quickly prepared for me. It appeared as though they maybe were not expecting us to arrive after all. However when we did arrive even though we were late, they seemed to conceal any sense of "oh crap - they are late but now they're here" type feeling and simply treated us as if we were right on time. Staff simply made adjustments and we were seated about 3 minutes after checking in. They took note of dietary restrictions and confirmed just to be sure. Quality of Menu: The menu is rather small actually. Not very many items on the menu. Also, it is difficult to decipher what the portion sizes are. The brussles sprouts were very delicious. Probably not as good as at D Bar, but still very good. Suggestions & Feedback: The dining tables are situated in a way where it is very private with only two (2) patrons at one table. The tables are ovaleque and turned so the longer sides are pointing the tables on the side which is perfect for creating more intimate dining settings. Yes, there were parties dining on either side of our party for two (2), but we were at such a "safe" distance that we could not make out any conversation from neighboring tables. Very well done!! :) Now for some issues: I ordered the scallops as my entre. Mind you, I ordered a starter, a plate for sharing AND my entre. When the entre arrived, I noticed there were only three (3) scallops on the plate and that was it... So I paid $10 per scallop ... for...an entre. This portion size was definitely more comparable to a starter, per their own menu standards. The value of the entre did not present itself when comparing the price to the portion size. Now, if the entre were offered with a starch or a carb, that would have increased its value. Instead, the scallops were platted with a "smear" of very light decor which carried an aesthetic purpose and not any sort of sustenance quality. (I could order three (3) sushi rolls at an establishment with rave sushi reviews for $30 and be full.) So, $30 for three (3) regular sized scallops for dinner. Hmmm. I've had better. My dinner partner ordered the same entre and left the establishment with hunger. Suggestion would be to at least offer bread or rice or some other type of side option with the scallops. read more

The Nickel in Denver, CO will be the first place I go when the stay at home orders ease. It is my favorite place and I can't wait to get back to the nice people and great food and drinks there. The ambiance is wonderful... you can have a great conversation but there is always a lively crowd that makes you feel like you are part of something bigger. I love the lamb, every way they prepare it and the squash soup is fab... salads and desserts are wonderful as well!! Oh, and have a cup of their great coffee! You can't go wrong at The Nickel!!! read more
