I recently took my adult son, who was in dire need of a haircut and shave, to Matts's. My son suffers from severe mental illness and was homeless and destitute for over two years on the streets of Tucson and then Phoenix. Having been recently rescued from his plight and now being treated for his mental illness, my son is just now beginning his journey of recovery. I chose to bring him to Matt's after seeing on Yelp* that Matt offers face shaves, has great reviews, and has a really unique looking shop. I am so very glad that I did! We arrived at Matt's unannounced as walk-ins and despite my son's apprehension against doing so I asked for the haircut and shave. I suggested to my son, he could always grow his beard back and that all of the hair would then be "new," just as his life is becoming new again. Matt checked his calendar and remarked that by coincidence he had a cancellation and that if my son was ready he could do the cut and shave right then. Matt explained the prices and informed me that the service was cash only. I was totally cool with that and left my son in Matt's care while I hopped out to the nearby ATM. Upon my return, I took a seat in one of the comfy Victorian style chairs in the waiting area, which as one can see from the photos here on Yelp* is like a mash-up of Steampunk meets Action-Horror, meets Fantasy! My son was reclined in the barber chair with a hot towel covering his face. As I waited, I heard Matt speaking to my son, instructing him in which direction he required my son to do this or that with his head position. Earlier, before walked out to make my ATM run, I gave a look to Matt - I was trying to convey that my son required some degree of special handling. Matt certainly picked up on it because the tone with which he was speaking to my son, was one of genuine caring and patience. I was very grateful for such a compassionate approach by Matt! My son was completely shocked at his new look and I just thanked him for allowing me to have his beard shaven off. I asked him what he thought and he said, it's a nice haircut! I thanked Matt for taking us as walk-ins and Matt thanked us for our business. I would definitely recommend Matt's Barber Parlor for anyone seeking a professionally done, quality haircut or shave. Been awhile since anyone put in a good yelp word for matt, so I'll say he's still great. He's got a successful business now, no one would blame him if he cared a little less about his customers but it's crazy how much he still does. On a slow summer Thursday he texted me right back after I called and he wasn't able to pick up (think he was cutting someone's hair) telling me when he'd be in for the day and giving me his prices, and when we had a miscommunication about what time I'd show up he offered to leave lunch with his mom to come right over to take care of my hair (I told him don't worry, family comes first, and it was my bad for missing his text before i drove over). And i was a first time customer, not a regular. The dude just gives a crap. And that was even before i got sat down in the barber chair. The cut and shave he gave me were great, the time passed quick because he's a great listener and has a sly sense of humor, and honestly 35 bucks for a cut is a fair, customer-first price for the level of service you're getting. I found Matt's Barber Parlor on Yelp. One of the few barber shops open on Sundays. The Yelp reviews and photos painted a fun experience. Upon arrival we signed in and met Bert. He gave my son a new hairdo; a fohawk. He was very welcoming and personable. He did an outstanding job on my son's hair. My son and I (and mom/wife) love it. Well done Bert! $40 for the haircut plus tip. It's worth it. You get what you pay for. Quality work done right. Found Matt's spot on Google search and was glad I did since I was a walk-in. Very relaxing place. Next time I'll make an appointment to catch more of a movie or just relax and close your eyes, he keeps the room dark. On the chair, plenty of mirrors and can still watch the movie. Came here yesterday to get a haircut. The person that cut my hair was Eric. Some new guy that started working here. I was extremely disappointed honestly. I showed him a photo of the hairstyle I wanted but instead was left with a quick half-assed job of a haircut. Was not very detailed oriented conpared to the other barbers that previously cut my hair. For a $40 haircut thats a rip-off. The fact that it wasn't even busy that day and he rushed me off like that is truly disappointing. I've been coming here for a year or 2 and never have I had a bad experienced. Also he was very rough with my head and felt like he was hitting me for some reason. He even left a cut on the back of my neck and applied something on it which tells you that he was very rough with me and careless. He mentioned that he's been cutting hair for 13 years which was hard to believed honestly. Start looking for another place. Was going here for years and paying $20.00 it's now $60.00 for Men's haircut. Okay I get it with the times, but Matt the namesake of the place is never around. I'd pay the $60.00 to him anyday. The rest there forget about it. Went in today and they screwed my cut up. Some guy who looks like he didn't bathe said I got you. No he did not. You can't charge higher prices if your quality has significantly gone down. This is honestly my favorite barbershop to go to in the valley! I have been coming here for the past 6 years because Matt offers a cool experience! Yes there's usually long waits because there's only 1 or 2 barbers cutting hair but I can guarantee that they all provide the best haircuts ever! You'll never sense the feeling of being rushed which is a good thing because the barber takes their time giving you a good quality cut. The only cons is that my favorite barber doesn't work weekends and it's walk ins only. Poor lighting led to unbalanced hair cut which I had to micro manage to get "even" but was rushed out due to "people waiting"... cool vibe , movies playing keeps you not bored, but the actually cut was whatever due to the lighting not allowing the dresser to perceive angles.. Great great barbershop. Matt is the man. The vibe of the place roars man cave. Matt gives out complimentary water and soft drinks. A classic movie is always playing on the LARGE TV. Came in to Matt's exactly two (2) weeks ago because of their late hours and great reviews. To say I got one of the best haircuts ever would perhaps be an understatement. The barber killed it (despite the fact that the shaving cream machine was broken and I got the cut but no clean up). The wife loved the cut so much she encouraged me to drop the guy I have been going to for the past few years. It was with this that I made the 25 minute drive from the house to get another cut. I was happy to see the same barber was working but that quickly passed. Before I was all the way in the door he announced "when I'm done with this guy I'm taking my lunch, I'm overworked and need to eat". I said OK and asked when he would be available to which I got "do you get a lunch at your job". I asked if I could get on the waiting list and come back so I could be first in line? He told me "if you're the fist one here when I get back then you will be first on the list". One things for sure, I will never be back. read more

I left this place a very happy customer. If you are looking for a intamite barbershop look no further. I called Matt to see if they took appointments, they did not. But I decided to stop in anyways. The vibe from this place was not your normal barber shop, it was very vintage. Matt made me feel right at home when I was here. You can tell he puts a lot of passion into his work. My fiance needed a last minute haircut while we were visiting family in Phoenix. We found this hair salon on Yelp and took a chance based on its good reviews. We are SO glad we did because my fiance got the best haircut from this place. It's been a couple months so the name of the guy is lost on us but he did such a great job! We actually talk about how we miss this place because he hadn't been able to find a place at home that does as great of a job. Highly recommend! The cut started off with a scissor clip of a couple of rows off the top. Then it switched to a clipper cut on the sides. Then he moved to my beard for a bit. Then back to fading the sides, then back to the beard, then he texted someone, then he gave some cash to the other barber to get a muffin for him, then he texted someone again, then he laid into my beard with a vengeance. He took the cheekline way lower than I wanted and lined it up with a straight razor; however he chose to grind his clippers into my neckline to line that up. I got a naked fade on the sides of my head, but he didn't give me a straight razor finish over the ears either. Couldn't see any of the cut as it was happening because of the weird setup with the mirrors and the chair. read more

This place is complete trash. Everywhere online reads they open at 8AM. I have now been here twice and waited until 8:30 both times and no one ever showed up. Keep in mind this is in the Arizona heat getting here early and waiting for nearly an hour. They don't have a voice machine otherwise I would tell me frustrations there. If you don't open at 8AM, maybe you should change your time so you don't have customers waiting outside for nothing. Oh and if you come in on the weekends, it's $40 for a haircut on Sunday. $40? V's barber doesn't even charge that much and they are a rip-off chain barber. I will never go here again and make sure everyone knows how poor this service is. Twice waiting outside and nothing. I've been here twice and have received a great haircut from both Zach and Isaac. The atmosphere has a very old school feel and the barbers all provide a unique experience compared to your typical franchise barber shop. It may be a little more expensive than other barbers in the area but its worth the extra $5-$10 to ensure quality. On top of all that they are open on Sunday which is a tough find in the Phoenix area. Five Stars, highly recommended! read more

Worst haircut I have had in the last decade. I'm very pissed right now. First time customer - read all the YELP reviews and thought that this place would be a winner. Cute retro decor inside. Waited about 10 minutes and the owner popped out to say he was going on lunch break and would leave me in good hands (not). I asked the guy who put me in his chair for a fade. Simple - the #1 most common style of haircut at any shop today - easy pie. I asked him to use his best discretion on how to square up and also to leave the top with a little length as I brush to the right. Sadly, he didn't listen my entire head is shaved down army short to a stubble fuzz - all one length, not a fade to be found. Yep the top is longer - but MAN what a sucky cut. Just because you have a set of clippers these days does NOT mean you can or should cut HAIR. Listen to the client guy. I don't care how cute this place is. I perform for a living and this was such a crap cut - no talent - no skill - not coming back. Run from this mess - if the owner (who may be talented) is going to hire people who cannot or will not listen - and cannot do a fade - then I suggest folks take their business elsewhere. I know what a barber can and should do - my regular guy is on vacation and so I made the mistake of trying the Barber Parlor. I was thinking of getting a shave here too - but after the lousy fuzz-top one size fits all (no scissors or shears) army haircut I wisely decided to leave and make my peace with this truthful YELP review to warn others. The price for a shave here at $35 also seems ridiculously high. When I just got home it was my teen who also just noticed that my right side-burn was sloppily trimmed about 1/2" longer than the left side. Are you kidding me???
